Since I bumped into that wall a couple times in my 50 years playing the game, I should probably point out to my fellow Europeans and all the Brits around here that particular terms aren't the only thing this covers. It's a whole slew of concepts.

It's a bit hard to sum up in a few words, but I for one have never figured out what exactly 'PG-13' is. I get the general idea of not using 'bad words' and keeping down on the sexual references (while, to make the cultural link, on German TV you can tune in to bare breasts at noon on the TV and one of the most successful prime time crime shows 'starred' literally constant swearing). Then I'll say something that I consider 'safe' and promptly get smacked on the head cause apparently... oh wait, I'm not supposed to discuss that thing on the forums anymore.

I also didn't think much of having a buttplug for an avatar once upon a time (an obscure reference to certain people getting 'shafted' by a particular game change) seeing as you can find these things in sex shop windows just walking past. Apparently not so in America it turns out.

I'm not actually trying to brag here, just saying that disseminating words by itself might not be all the cultural differences are about.

Counterargument would be that you can theoretically just do a word search for uncensored words that routinely come up in an offensive context, such as schoolyard level insults. Unless everyone posting a potentially offensive (and I myself really don't worry about offensive per se, I'm rather dulled thanks to the internet) picture names it 'offensive_picture_of_genitalia.jpg' or so.

A picture requires you to wait until a player reports it unless you stumble across it in the pursuit of your regular reading.

Another issue might be that, as they say, you can't unsee things. Descriptions of offensive things unfold and you have the option of not continuing to read unless you're as curious as I am. But stumbling across tubgirl is just that and it's done. Which some can shrug off, while others might have a less robust stomach.

I know this because it has happened over and over and OVER in the past. People would rather have SOMEONE ELSE do the work for them rather than let them resolve the problem for themselves.

I swear, I'm surrounded by...... ummm... very nice people.
Really, I just don't want to see the crap people with no taste thing looks good in a signature. It will be cause for extra policing too if it stays in, but if I was offended by viewing genitalia I'd have a bigger problem I think.

I just really don't need to see electric blue and shocking orange genitalia blinking at the speed of sound.
  5. Bill, IIRC vBulletin actually saves the Sig with the post. If you edit your Sig later on, pre-edit posts will retain the old Sig and post-edit ones will receive the new Sig. Unless you do what you did. I actually like this feature because often signatures also represent their times.

Not a joke at all. I could probably explain myself, but this is about the forums.

Where I still strongly believe that a sizable percentage of people will abuse any form of image linking. And while it can certainly be policed, it's frankly not worth the effort. Some may have some artistical merit (Beefcake's animated one does look rather sleek), though there's little practical value in graphically repeating your handle which is already given with every post.

There is really no palpable value to signature images. They are an added means of expression, which will require added policing. And some are bound to be shockingly hideous, whether intentionally or unintentionally so.

Truthfully? I tend to know better than most people. Not all of the time, not on more specific topics such as, say, quantum physics, mind you. But the bottom line is that empirically I'm right more often than I'm wrong.

Which pretty much marks the odds in my favour.

Most everyone had two stars unless they only posted to Forum Games. Which rendered the entire system pointless. Same thing will happen here, so it's really a non-issue. Though I've considered asking people to bomb my Rep to the depths before I even say anything controversial. There is no such thing as a bad Rep.

Check the top right corner of your forums page. If you have an _NA it's hardwritten into your handle and visible there. Obviously too late for you, but other people might wonder.

Much love and all, Obsidius, but that's pretty damn atrocious based on your choice of colours alone already. Unless they add the City of Clowns in Going Rogue. Seriously, it's pretty much lending weight to the anti-image side.

One more and we can form a lynch mob. Shame it's 1 AM over here and I have no idea where to get a pitchfork from at this time of night. Come to think of it I wouldn't know where to get one during the day either.

Maybe they already went and turned it off like they should. You don't want people running astray with screen-sized grainy images or seizure-inducing animated gifs. It's something you can do in a small, easily controllable community of a few hundred people.

Freedom of expression still means painting the walls of their cave with their own fecal matter to too many people.
  13. The naming thing kills any excitement for me. The colour scheme doesn't help, but that bleeding suffix I got stuck with makes me not want to see my board handle.

Yeah, so apparently another guy over on the Euro servers apparently was just as uncreative as myself and referenced the same meteorological phenomenon for their board handle. Someone with zero posts to their name, I should add. Which now leaves me stuck with that bleeding _NA at the end of my handle. Which I am very much not happy with for a variety of reasons.

One, 'NA' makes me think of 'not available'. I'd like to however assure the ladies of the CoH forums that I am very much available and up for pretty much anything.

On a less serious note (which is probably item two), while I play on the North American servers, I'm still German and living in Germany, which makes me think the NA label is wholly inappropriate to me. Yes, I realize it's only meant to indicate server clusters of origin. But it's not how it parses in my mind.

Most importantly, item three, it's plain not the name I chose. If I wanted a suffix of any sort, I'd have added one when I signed up 25 years ago. It's a text-based environment, handles are the only unique identifiers and first indicators of personality available to us.

I'm not gonna bother with being humble. Even if it's not the greatest handle in the world, it's mine, I'm pretty sure I've had it since the bleeding CoH Beta boards and I'm not gonna share with a guy who doesn't need any handle cause he doesn't post or maybe isn't even around anymore.

Please hurry up with that promised fix, cause typing through gritted teeth appears to be harmful to my fingers.

Don't want to dissuade you from making the character but are you planning to roleplay with this character? If so it might be really rough to do so just for getting others to Rp with the character.

OK. Question 3. Picard or Shatner? If you say Archer or Janeway you get minus points towards intelligence.

  16. [ QUOTE ]
Does a Xenophobic(Racist against everything that isn't white, including aliens, demons, and especially catgirls) Anarchist, Neo-Nazi superhero, make sense at all?

And yes I realize this is incredibly racist and might be controversial, but I'm not any of these things in real life, and just think it'd be an interesting concept?

(Mainly 'superhero' because he has a powerset I want, and plan to move him vill side once Going Rogue comes out.)

    [/ QUOTE ]

On a more serious note, I'm not sure if xenophobia still is 'in'. During the Bush years, xenophobia seemed to be a very American pastime. Even among the usually somewhat more enlightened people on these boards it would crop up here and there.

However, you can't be an Anarchist and a Neo-Nazi at the same time. Fascism in all its forms revolves around a strong 'law and order' perspective, warped as it may be.

Also, I doubt you'd get such a character banned. There's a ton of Nazi villains running around out there. Most of them so silly they make me want to cry, mind.

You're insinuating most people out there in binaryland are intelligent, if only by virtue of having been designed that way. Empiric evidence does not support that claim.
  18. <QR>

Here I come to ruin your day.

You just called your character 'rich maiden'. There's a reason Reichsman (still a terrible name with the amalgamation of languages there, but oh well) has that S in there. Reichs- is contracted from the Genitive 'des Reichs', 'of the realm'. Reich just means rich.*

The extra S defines the relation between the other parts of the composite. Compare English helmsman. Helmman would render an entirely different image and a different type of helm. Woodsman and woodman, same story, forrester or statue.

In other words, it's all for naught anyhow.

    * As to why those words are so damned similar, well, they have a common Germanic root which is also the base of the -ric/-rik/-rich suffix in Germanic names. The root equates to being rich (in), powerful (in), and also indicative of rulership (over). As such, it also appears in the German word for kingdom, Königreich. That which is ruled by a king. Later generalized and shortened to Reich since there wasn't always a king in charge. And that is the Reich the name Reichsman references.

Don't think I've been in this particular situation, but my characters tend to get attached to people who leave. When someone asks where they went, my main's usual reply is to state that he ate them. That usually shuts people up for one reason or another.

Thread title says it all. Getting rid of obscene content is one thing, but what about spelling errors? Or information about one of your own characters that's inaccurate? Where do you folks draw the line when it comes to editing other people's work?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Getting rid of obscene content? There is no obscene content on the Wiki. That's merely in your head. Which is to say, unless it's a breaking any laws or rules, content per se is not a reason to edit an entry. Editing another person's entry merely because it offends your sensibilities is however reason to get yelled at.

Editing spelling errors is certainly fine, though be mindful when it comes to that. If someone went through and Americanised my British spelling or edited some pseudo-witty play on words, I'd be rather cross with them to say the least.

Information on other character is iffy, to say the least. I'd generally always suggest to run anything given as factual information on another character or an event involving another character be run past that character's player first. I once sincerely congratulated a player on how well they portray a mentally handicapped character without making it seem like they're begging for pity or being silly. The player pretty much exploded in my face as they had no intention of portraying a mentally handicapped character and went on to tell me how smart and lovely their character was.

Of course, my opinion of said player kind of took a nosedive afterwards, but the point I'm trying to make is clear.

That said, just plain editing over information about your characters or other characters doesn't always work either. When in doubt, just leave the player a message or bring it up in the Discussion section of the page in question. Ideally both.
