Quote:Best of luck. If you could please, post what step comes next in the sequence after "uninstall your anti-virus"? I was curious, but that was the point where I found a stable set of drivers and my ticket was closed.Still working with the tech support to see what I can do.

So, having spent almost three months of my life (if the in-game numbers are to be believed... I felt pretty lame when I did that calculation!) playing an /EA brute, I was curious as to what would be changed.
Quote:Interesting. This is good because it may open up a slot for me to put somewhere else, which I'll need to slot up Energize.Energy Aura Revamp
The most exciting part of any powers work for me personally is making improvements to existing power sets. So, porting over Energy Aura to Scrappers gave us a really good opportunity to make some changes to the set. The changes we chose to make were intended to make thematic sense and build upon strengths instead of filling intended weak spots. I wont list the lengthy patch notes here, but I will sum them up for you:
[*]Resistance on the sets auto powers were slightly increased and now include endurance drain protection and slow resistance.
Quote:[*]Entropy Shield is now Entropic Aura for Scrappers and Brutes. This power is a taunt aura that grants the user a scaling recharge buff based on the number of foes surrounding the user. The Stalker version of the set doesnt have a taunt aura, but it offers a small Recharge bonus.
One of the things /EA has always done in a unique way is manage aggro, via unsuppressed stealth in Energy Cloak. Solo and in small teams, you can be much more selective in what gets pulled and what doesn't. Being the "stealth brute" is kind of cool.
I don't have any objection to a taunt aura for /EA (is the taunt component being pulled out of Energy Drain, btw?). I'm a little curious about the logic of putting it in the mez protection toggle, though. If I want to be stealthy in the way the set is designed to allow, I have to give up mez protection? That seems like kind of a steep trade-off.
In large teams it won't matter, because everything is going to be aggro'd anyway. But this does create some conflicts in solo/small team play styles that don't exist for /EA brutes currently.
Quote:[*]Energy Drain no longer has a healing component, instead it offers a small defense boost per target hit.
Quote:[*]Conserve Energy was replaced by Energize, a self Heal that offers a moderate regeneration and endurance cost reduction boost for a short while. This power works identically to the Electric Armor version.
I really like the changes. I just hope some consideration will be given to putting the taunt aura in a toggle other than Entropic Shield/Aura, or moving the mez protection to a different toggle. -
11.2 isn't a magic bullet for everyone. Unfortunately, it seems like different systems "like" different versions of the drivers. I'd suggest going back to 11.5 to see if that fixes things for you (making sure to first fully uninstall the 11.6 and 11.2 drivers, of course).
-
Freakin' brilliant is what that is. Major kudos to whomever created that billboard.
-
11.2 finally let me close my support ticket. I've run STFs, LRSF, BAFs, a Keyes trial, and an Eden, plus various smaller-team content with friends. Not a single crash.
I learned a lot from this process.
Like, the importance of desk padding in maintaining good forehead hygeine. -
Is it my imagination/lack of reading comprehension, or are we missing a patchnote?
Because it seemed very much like the "Hide Useful Salvage Warning" setting actually WORKED for me, even after I zoned.
I even squeed a little... -
-
Did you, by any chance, recently upgrade to ATI's 11.6 series video drivers?
-
Haven't run a TF, SF, or trial in weeks without crashing.
Tonight, with 11.5 drivers still installed, I crashed standing on the ship in IP waiting for an invite.
Uninstalled 11.5. Again. Installed 11.2.
Proceeded to run a STF and a LRSF without crashing once.
Or without uninstalling my antivirus software... -
Quote:Actually, cognitive dissonance theory explains this behavior perfectly. People want their attitudes and their behaviors to be consistent with one another, in order to avoid cognitive dissonance. If an attitude is, "I hate this game," then behaviors that demonstrate hatred of the game, creating attitude-behavior consistency, are the most direct way to avoid any dissonance occurring.I realize that cognitive dissonance allows a human brain to pretty much justify anything to themselves, but I seriously do not understand the part of a human brain that makes it think hanging around and posting on an MMO message board for a game that it no longer enjoys.
I, on the other hand, am pleased with the direction the game has taken (in general) and therefore tend to engage in positive behaviors toward it. Dissonance avoided!
Understanding cognitive dissonance also allows wonderful manipulation of other human beings during situations like jury duty, but that's a topic for another day. -
We're now to the point where support wants me to uninstall my antivirus software to see if that helps.
I'm unclear on why the AV program would create issues with one machine but not another (I have the same AV program on my laptop and it never crashes like this, but obviously has a different hardware configuration), and why my wife's computer that has a different AV program on it (but the exact same hardware configuration) would have the same problem with occasional crashes in CoH if it were truly an AV problem.
Guess it's time to try 11.2 drivers... -
The 11.6 drivers weren't better or worse than 11.3 in-game for me, and seemed better than 11.5, but the 11.6 were the only ones that led to my video card ceasing to respond (and then recovering) immediately after I exited the game.

For those of you keeping score at home, the next recommendation from support (having now escalated from first-line support to someone higher up) is...
*drum roll*
Uninstall Catalyst Control Center
So I'll be trying that some time soon. Once I stress-test with the 11.4 drivers a bit more, of course. -
Quote:Well, the specs are up at the top - as you well know. =) If we were to invest in an upgrade, what would be a good card that would still fit with the system as designed? I can't buy now, because the nature of my job makes it such that I don't get a full paycheck again until September, but knowing what I'm looking for would be good. So, something probably mid-range and not ATI?I'm really starting to hate ATI all over again. Problem is there isn't a similar performance card from nVidia for a similar price, at least for the cheaper build. I've been considering changing out the HD 6950 1GB for a GTX 560Ti.
Now that I've built the systems, I'm much more comfortable with the idea of changing out something as minor as a video card! -

Quote:I don't know. I have a laptop that also has Win7 on it, but it uses a much lower-grade video chipset and I never get freeze-ups on it. I probably just have to keep walking my settings down until it (hopefully) doesn't happen any more.I'm wondering if it's something with windows 7? I'm going to install 64 bit vista, do a coh install without the nc loader and see what happens. I never had issues with XP and COH with the same card.
The upgrade to the 11-6 drivers didn't end up successful. After the two load-out freezes, I had another full freeze-up mid-BAF. In about 3 hours of play I crashed 3 times. On the flip side, my wife's computer, which is built with the exact same specs, was used as a second-account for everything but the BAF, and never froze up at all. However, she *has* gotten the freeze-up crash at other times. It just didn't happen today. -
So far I've frozen up loading out of missions twice since installing the 11.6 drivers (teammates could see me outside the door, but the game stopped responding while I was in the zone load-screen), but haven't frozen up in-mission yet. Going to try more variety in the missions now...

Quote:Thanks for the advice! I'll give 11-4 a spin. 11-3 is such an improvement over 11-5 that I'm kind of gun-shy on trying anything "newer". Worst case, I'll keep 11-3 on the desktop and can always uninstall 11-4 if it gives me problems.Well you can try 11-4. I use 11-3 on two machines with no issues. I have 10-6 on and older XP rig with a 5750 which I have been playing on this week. Since you have a 5000 series card, you could use 10-9 or 10-6.
Edit: Ah, they want me to go to the 11-6 drivers. Awesome. I guess I'm the guinea pig... -
I am almost at my wits' end dealing with tech support on this. After having told them that I started with the most recent drivers and uninstalled to use a previous generation in my initial message, they looked at my game advisor report and advised me to update my drivers.
The crashing was worse with the 11-5 driver set than it is with the 11-3. I told them that. I really did. I even linked them to this thread, which shows the most recent drivers prior to my uninstalling them and installing the older ones.
I'm trying really had to be polite, since I know tech support can be a pretty thankless job, but being treated like a moron is starting to grate on my nerves.
This is beginning to look like a retention issue. -

Quote:I'm currently working through things with NCSoft's tech support. Unfortunately, their first-line suggestion is to run the game in Safe Mode and see if the problem replicates.Exactly what I go through for the last 2-3 months. I had posted about this issue before, thought I had it fixed but it was short lived. I have a gigabyte hd 6850, tri core processor and amd 770 chipset so our systems have some similarities that may hold a clue. I'm at the point where I'm just going to cancel my sub and play the other games I have that work properly. Without any support from Paragon techs we'll never get to the bottom of this
This is unfortunate because the default resolution in Safe Mode is frickin' enormous. The chat box takes up almost 25% of my screen! I know I can minimize it, but the problem only happens for me when I'm in teams, and not being able to see the chat box while I'm teamed is a real issue.
Last night I had a crash (while teamed) in which when the game froze, (a) my attribute monitor window was opened, (b) my "experience to next level" (which I track normally) went to a negative number larger than 2 billion (yes, it could have been -2^32, or whatever the big number that maxes the database is), (c) all my temp powers were greyed out, and (d) even though I wasn't in a TF, my team window was replaced by a SF window with the "Quit Strike Force" button. I suppose those could all be graphical glitches that happened when the game froze, but it seemed very weird to me.
Still, it was only one crash in three hours, which is much better than the six or seven over five hours that I had Monday night. -
After rolling back to the 11-3 version of the drivers, I froze-crashed tonight on a Kahn (first crash since uninstalling the 11-5 and installing the 11-3). The crash corresponded with the release of the first AV in the final fight.
I also crashed exiting a BAF, but that was a different kind of crash, so I'm not sure it's related.
Any insights or thoughts would be appreciated. -
My impression is that many people just like having a different-colored name.
It wouldn't be the first time a player-base used a feature for something other than its intended purpose. =)
