  1. Good movie. Good Pay off. No plot holes.

Worst part of the movie is the over used line from the original that annoys the crap out of me. Do the people that write these things not realize the only reason it was ok for it to be in the original is because Heston said it?

Also rewatched the 2001 movie... I think it's a PANCAKEPANCAKEPANCAKEPANCAKE deal that everyone says t's so bad. Its not. It's actually fairly decent. The only real problem is the twist at the end... It doesn't work with time travel shenanigans... Also 10 years later I think everyone would have called it an Shyamalan ending. (which btw, recently watched A:tLAB and it's not bad either.. not as good as the cartoon, but not as bad as say... Green Lantern)

It would be like getting food poisoning from a drive thru, and suing my car maker because it was the car that took me through the drive trough. They have nothing to do with one another
So the license is only for viewing content via those sources? what about if I have a photographic memory? Can I watch the movies in my head legally?

It's more important than most of the news the news organizations report on as Spider-Man is part of the American mythos and as such is important.

An ape who's parents have been killed takes up the mantle of the bat and becomes Batape?

You're the one talking about copying from netflix, not me. I'm talking about having a separate copy from whatever source and watching that instead of watching it via netflix.

No, physicists say it "may" go out the window. They don't know for certain what types of time travel actually work and whether or not the universe does it automatically or what...

The type of time travel you are talking about that they are thinking of isn't really time travel, it's dimensional travel. When you go back in time you don't go back in time but rather go to another dimension that is identical to ho our dimension is and then when you kill your grandfather you don't effect your existence cuz that's not really your grandfather. The causality chain is not broken.

Firstly, I'd probably not do anything far reaching. I'd probably do a bit of body modifications, go have fun, and then accomplish some dreams using the powers to make up for some downfall that keeps me from doing them without it.

Once I've lived a decent life like that I'd probably do a bit of political philosophic study bring several people back from the dead to help figure out how to run a new government, working out the details of a system that I've already got in my head. Next I'd call a meeting of all the heads of state and demand they work with me to help advance humanity or be isolated and left behind... and then i'd start working on expanding out into space and exploring space.

There is something important you are missing

A more accurate analogy would be you own a pizzeria and you say I can eat all the pizza I want and you set up a delivery method but instead of taking a pizza from this method of delivery I ask one of your employees to get me a pizza that came from the exact same spot the other pizzas were coming from.

As pointed out though modern law, if I understand correctly, has it that you don't OWN a copy of the data, you own a LICENSE. Now if this is true then any license within the library of a digital distribution system that you have an account and access to you should then have a license for all that material. It doesn't matter whether it is a copy or anything like that.
  11. Plant of the Apes lore happens this way...

roughly 1-2000 years ago (i think) a disease plagued the pets of mankind killing off Cats and Dogs. Humans turn to "apes" as pets and then as time goes on they begin using them as more slaves and educating them more. They develop the ability to speak and eventually Caesar arises and starts to lead a revolt against humans.

From this point mankind attacked the apes and each other with a few humans taking refuge underground in a closed off protected city. Humans above ground either die out or are enslaved as apes rise and subdue the various pockets of mankind above ground left and over the long run this causes humans to stop gathering in communities as much and they lose language.

This all fits together because Caesar being from a more advanced lineage would be smarter and thus more able to advance such ideas as a revolution would entail.

The point that doesn't fit is that the two apes come to the past and are all over the news and tell what happens. This being the case man wouldn't let those events to take place and as such it makes the idea that it still does happen pretty ludicrous.

i love how people don't understand that Macs aren't more "hack"/virus resistent but rather 95% of people don't use Macs so viruses aren't developed for them... Now that Mac and apple OSs are becoming more popular that means more people will create viruses and such for them and thus make them as bad as Windows with viruses and various other malware, if not worse since the protection software for macs aren't up to par with the Windows protection stuff.

A few people get it - Spotify are one of the better ones on the whole - but they're usually hamstrung by the licensing agreements they have to sign with the content providers in order to be able to offer their material for streaming/download.
lol yeah... I mean isn't it now in the law that when you buy a dvd you don't "own" a copy but rather own a license to access that data. If that is true and is true of all these different types of media then by that logic by having a netflix and spotify account i own a license to access any data that is in their library... how I access it or in what form should not make a difference...

This is a scary thing to a degree because like I mentioned, brains to me are more or less just databases. Imagine a company trying to argue that you don't have the licensing rights to a song, movie, or whatever any more and them trying to petition the government to have it removed from a person's brain. Further, with people trying to figure out how the brain works and people being patent happy imagine them patenting the visual cortex or another part of the brain trying to charge you for it's usage... That's a scary thought.

This rental fee does not actually give you ownership rights to any of that material. If you want the video/song permanently on your computer then you need to buy it. Depending on who you buy it from the price can be very reasonable.

Now to get technical Netflix and Spotify pay licensing fees to the studios for any media that they stream to you, thus the monthly fee they inturn charge you. That fee must cover the streaming costs, the storage and network connection costs, staff costs, and a decent profit to pocket.

Now if you are talking about a DVD or CD that you own then yes you can digitize and use it yourself as much as you want so long as you don't make money off of that use, or let the physical version out of your hands.
Access is access to my mind.
It seems like the laws make no sense when you think about data as data. Access is essentially one database reading another and to varying degrees copying it. With this viewpoint I don't see how getting it from one source or another makes any substantial difference. Especially if I have granted access to whatever data. To me it's akin to owning a dvd, and instead of watching that dvd you watch your friend's who lives in the same house as you.
  15. So.. I got to thinking, now that I have access to millions of songs, movies, shows, etc free and legal is it illegal to have a ripped mp3/avi of the same song/show on my pc that I could watch/listen to via those services freely and legally? Is it immoral? and why?

Im literally just accessing the same content in a different way, content that I have free and/or legal access too as much as i want...to me it doesn't make any sense for it to be illegal to have a ripped mp3 when that same song is available to free on free service...

    Am I just crazy?

    The Talk

So I just had an awkward talk with my uncle... or at least awkward for me.

2 days ago my bro tells me my grandpa's PC is messed up (again) and that he'd like me to fix it for him today. So today I go over there and my grandpa starts describing the problem... by mid sentence I know what caused it and who to blame for the problem. It's the stuff the net was made for that caused the problem... So I ask if my uncle has been using the PC and the answer is yes and I tell him what happened and then go about trying to fix the problem (new that hadn't seen before all the .exe extensions were changed) so I figure out how to fix the problem and run the software to clean the system...

Well near the end My uncle comes down and is like "Oh the Pc is up" And I ask him if he's been looking at what the internet is for ^.^ and he says yeah. So I try to explain to him for the second or third time that if you are going to look at that stuff don't use internet explorer, use chrome, use incognito, scan for problems, etc... and I notice myself using the word protection a lot. Which when i realized that this is like the talk in reverse kinda made feel awkward.

So have you guys had to have a similar talk with others...concerning PC usage and how to keep safe? And did it feel awkward to you guys?

But it just didn't click together in the end. I don't mind the fantasy within a fantasy concept, but it didn't feel right to only include the real world at the very beginning and the very end. I never cared for... I don't even remember her name, but the one who survives at the end. She wasn't that strong of a character, which is ironic considering that's what the movie tells us she is.

And then the first fantasy just didn't gel for me. I would have been much more interested in the goings on of an insane asylum than the goings on of some weird bordello with dancing. And the second fantasy... where she is the hero and saving the day... is supposed to represent her doing a strip dance in the first fantasy, and I assume it's suppose to represent her psychiatry sessions in the real world. But that just doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't know, I'll have to check out those animated shorts sometime, they sound quite interesting.
AS I pointed you are lead to believe it's a fantasy within a fantasy, but it's actually a Fantasy within a Fantasy within a Fantasy... the asylum isn't reality. The audience or real world is supposed to be the focus, not the characters or the movie. It's a meta-story within a meta-story. You have to digest it and try to look at what is being presented in a meta-format rather than take everything at face value.

Like I said before, I think everything was done well and right, just something didn't click as entertained or all that interesting... perhaps it's because of the self delusion of grandeur that the director/author exudes from the film. i don't really like faux intellectual engagement and that's probably what we all feel from the movie and not anything actually wrong with any part of the movie.
  19. The correct answer is the writers, artists, and editors...
  20. Spoilers...

The movies starts with a girl about to be labotomized in an insane asylum...

We enter her fantasy world or memories or mind... and we watch a story about the characters from the insane asylum acting as ***** house operators.

We then enter a fantasy within her mind (level 2 of the fantasies) where she finds that everything she needs she has and she can fight to escape using her abilities

The story switches from these two worlds, both in the characters mind. One world she has absolute trust, loyalty, bravery, and all the power she needs to meet whatever task she is put up against. There is no need for trickery or facade, only brutal action. On the other hand these worlds are also very flashy and over the top indicating to the audience that this is a lie, false face put on by the character.

The other world is dull and lifeless. she's trapped. She's weak. She has to rely on trickery and the aid of friends that are also weak not completely loyal to her. She can't fight back here by doing anything other than submitting and hoping others will help her. This world emphasizes weakness, hopelessness, and reliance on others.

In other words this is the writer talking about the lobotomized mind... or more accurately in this case the divide in our culture...

The fact that these are both fantasy worlds and that the real world is her about to get lobotomized is the author talking about how we need a balanced view of the world...

However, we then switch to the scene where the escaped girl sees the man from the fantasy world speak as if he knew about the fantasy worlds. This is key. As far as we know that girl isn't from the real world and neither is that guy, but it is presented as part of world one and indicates that the girl that is the focus is not the focus of the story and is just part of another fantasy world and we are left asking "who's story is it" and if I am accurately understanding the views of the 2 deeper fantasies correctly I'd say that the author is saying

There are 2 ways that you can look at the world and these are both seen through a lens that is as much fantasy as the fantasies themselves, and are often focused on the wrong point.

That's the meaning behind the film as far as I can figure it out to be. Now even though I understand all that and think all the beats are hit there is just something about it that doesn't work. I'm not sure what it is and thats not too often that I can say that. This is my type of movie and it just didn't feel like it hit the mark. I liked a lot of the scenes and see how they fit together, but maybe they went on too long or they didn't quite fit or maybe something got cut and without that little thing it make it not work, i dunno. Everything was dead on, but failed to deliver in my opinion.

    Alphas

I'm not sure whether I like this show or dislike it on principles...

The story is stealing from X-Men too heavily I feel

We have a professor that runs an "institute" that is there to help "Alphas" to learn to control their abilities that has now been made to be a tactical squad to deal with other "Alphas" and a second group that feels that if "Alphas" are exposed they'd be hated and there'd be a war. And these two groups that have disagreements about how to deal with things, but generally agree that there is a problem.
