Quote:I believe that's the name of it...I like them exploring the characters and their reactions outside of criminal work... I especially like this episode because Harley's so innocent and it explores the concept of innocence being at the discretion of the perspective of who you are interacting with."Harley's Holiday"? Yeah, that's a fun one.
"What are you doing?!? That's my father!"
"Noooooo... that's your father IN A TANK!!!"
Funny fact: both that ep and the Penguin ep the Critic has on his list have Veronica Vreeland getting involved with one of Batman's rogues trying to turn over a new leaf after being released from prison. -
I've yet to see this entire series...I've seen every other DCAU series... this one just gives me too many problems when I try to watch it, either bad streams or costs waaaay too much.
My favorite episode of what I've seen though is the Harley episode where she tries to reform. -

the reason behind the elements is simply because i want different groups to use different things because the develop with different levels of materials or want different tech... Some tech might favor gold or might favor platinum or they'll essentially do the same thing but might have different weaknesses and getting the other tech is likely going to be a pain or just not worth it.
I suppose I could just make up materials which I'll likely do anyhow, but I want to allow for that variation to stimulate trade...
I'm not sure if I want to do a grid for planetary construction or if i want to start from already having a sartship capable of interstellar travel or have them start at our level of tech...
Once you get to get out of the solar system though you'll be able to travel to other star systems, claim them, colonize, mine, set up star bases, set up defenses, set up communication relays, and interact with other players...
I'm gonna use a fairly big grid that generates as players explore and have new players placed via algorithm around the center... starting out players won't be able to communicate due to a filter that will translate their messages into various cyphers but with higher tech or what not that will be fixed... also players will be able to enter into various governments between them ranging from a democracy totalitarian dictatorship (conquoring your enemies!)
Like i said i suppose i could make up elements, but no reason not to use actual elements too... -
Quote:While Alphas is a good show it is not a "great" show. It hasn't hit it's stride yet and they need to start expanding on the individual characters a bit more exploring their abilities... hopefully it will get a few seasons to grow into itself.I just wish Alphas wasn't so heavy handed with their handlers. Honestly if they had brain one among them they would have realized that treating a bunch of people who have "powers beyond mortal man" like they were something you found on the bottom of your shoe isn't terribly smart or wise.

it's because the animations are rooted and as such gun play almost will always take on a gun-fu look because people think t looks cool and it's really the only way to diferentiate powers like that.

Quote:I am ^.^ so pretty much all the gasses go to that category...Noble gases don't belong to the Life Support Gasses unless you are dealing with alien life support systems.
Quote:I think Argon is used as a construction material. If you want to keep it as realistic as possible, then you have to have some elements in more than one category. Easiest way is type each element into wikipedia and see if you can use it for anything. I would disregard any elements that have a minor influence or no influence like Americium in smoke detectors. Could be used in construction, but not a main feature.
The list above is a quick run down of what i think before any research... What I'm doing now is listing each element and reading the top info and then marking it with numbers 1-7 each one meaning it's used in that field. I also then have to figure out composition of planets and the universe more or less so I can dismiss overly common elements where i can. It just takes a long time and wiki isn't always the best source nor is such a brief scanning of wikipedia ^.^ -
I'm creating a game... similar to a RTS... A space RTS where the player has to get materials from planets to create necessary components... and have different levels of technology, large enough to create those different level but small enough to be comprehensible... so the first step is trying to figure out what elements belong in what categories and then cut that to a reasonable number... so here are the categories...
Fuel
Construction Materials
Electronics Materials
Life Support gasses
Food Materials
Medical Materials
weapons
The elements can be repeated in multiple categories, but preferrably not...
Please make suggestions and comment on what i got so far... I'm guessing on a lot of this stuff as I almsot never think about this stuff and the elements are placed in one category with what i have now...

Quote:taking into account inflation comics cost less now i think... and they really should cost more. The average pay for each piece based on the amount of time/effort put in is under minimum wage.I can agree with this. I miss the days when you could pick up a comic and it didn't matter what the number on the cover was because you would always get the whole story in that one issue. There could still be references to past issues, but the entire issue was a self contained story. And even when there was an overall story arc, the book itself still managed to tell an entire story. These days any comic you buy is going to be a 4-6 issue commitment.
The other problem of course being that the books have gotten so expensive. Yeah, I'm old. My first comics were 45 cents (I still have some of them). I know those days are gone forever, but I just cannot convince myself to pay 3-4 dollars an issue when I know before hand that I will have to buy 6 issues to get the whole story. -
Quote:there are different versions of the legend of Arthur and the sword...Not a bad list, but isn't it Galatine that young Arthur removes from the stone, while Excalibur is the returned version from the Lady of the Lake?
Good to see Stormbringer (and twin Mournblade) there...no Durendal (Roland's sword) at first glance though.
Excalibur is sometimes referred to as any sword that Arthur wields, sometimes it's specifically the sword from the lady of the lake, and sometimes the sword in the stone is excalibur (from the lady of the lake) and sometimes it isn't.
Excalibur itself is said to have the power to make it's wielder the victor of any battle, duel, whatever it's in... which is kinda scary cuz it simply means that no matter what the end game will always favor the wielder's goals....however sometimes the only way that the wielder can win is by taking fatal attacks.. so >.> it's not really a great sword in my opinion
The real power is Excalibur's Scabbard which has the power of protection. The barer of that scabbard will come to no harm...
I'd personally prefer never to carry the Excalibur as a sword for fighting as there are too many pitfalls with it's power... you, your kingdom, you army, or any number of things could end up dead/destroyed and still remain the "winner" especially if you are in a desperate struggle that you'll likely lose. I'd rather have it as an off sword than the attacking sword.
I'd rather wield the Muramasa for attacking... only if I always kept the Excalibur scabbard on me. Those are supposed to be cursed and the scabbard would counter that. -
Quote:How do you respond to "it looks like WoW in tights"Looks like WoW in Space, but maybe that's all I ever wanted in the first place.
CoH uses different mechanics than WoW and this game seems to lean more towards CoH than WoW
Quote:Best way I've heard it described is as if an MMO, Borderlands and Ratchet and Clank had a really interesting night and this was the resulting offspring.
I see shooting, but it's not an FPS in any way shape or form. Unless the player of the footage just sucks and didn't move while attacking all attacks root you in that game which means it is the same as CoH save for a dodge mechanic. So I don't know how you compare it to Borderlands >.>
Saying it is like Ratchet and Clank cuz of it's platforming (which is nice to finally see in MMOs) is kinda silly. There are a ton of platformers out there. why not name one of them... Like say it's a combination of CoH and crash Bandicoot ^.^ -
The game play is akin to CoH. Rooted powers, but they added a dodge mechanic and made the animations prettier... also there appears to be a double jumper. I'll play beta if i get in and see if i like it but more than likely I won't be buying it due to the limited shelf life it probably has since it seems to not want to move the genre further along or just wants to play it safe with things it knows it can do...and sadly doing that means that other games will likely jump out ahead of it... both older and newer.

Quote:action mmorpg... think Phantasy star Universe and Online. CoH, CO, and DCUO are precursors to large scale usage of a more action oriented game playstyle.I'm not sure what that term means, but if it's "MMO with twitch combat," I'll pass. There are already plenty of multiplayer online platforms out there for that (Borderlands et al.); it doesn't need to completely displace games supporting playstyles in which character attributes matter more than player skill.
At least I hope the hell it doesn't, because I've got zero interest in that kind of gaming experience. If I'm going to suck at a twitch game, I'm going to do it in private.
"twitch" is not the same as "action"... "twitch" refers more to FPS/TPS and fighter where you need to react instantly to very fast events all the time... action includes twitch, but isn't all encompassing... inFAMOUS for example isn't twitch but it has twitch elements in it. -
Quote:you mean action mmo?Hmm, from the cinematic it seems like something that would work better as an action RPG rather than an MMO.
I think action MMORPGs are the future... any mmo game that doesn't follow that trend is likely going to fall in the next 5-10 and then won't exist after that ^.^ rpg's as they are now will exist as social media games and real world games. -
It's not about just being powerful or "awesome" it's about being the unobscure obscure. In other words a "geek top ten" would be generally recognizable by anyone and while generally people don't know the names of the weapons or what not the moment you tell them what they are they'll probably be oh yeah i know what that is or have a chance of that happening.
The weapons in that list are not such weapons. even if you explain them to someon most of them will be like "wha?" or they simply aren't at that level which is where popularity comes in. If a sword isn't popular enough to be cosplayed it likely doesn't meet the requirements of a top ten If it doesn't have instantly recognizable form or story then it probably doesn't belong.
Also, the reason I don't include the "lightsaber" in my list of 10 is cuz it is a type of weapon and not a weapon itself and Luke's lightsaber isn't the same lightsaber throughout...same reason why Leonardo's Ninjato doesn't belong on the list nor Hatori Hanzo swords.
As far as Excalibur being #1... geek culture i'd say it belong low on the list, the form changes so that's hard to say, but if we're going for shear power there is no more powerful sword. The Excalibur Sword is a literal "I win" button. That is its power ^.^ The reason Arthur lost in the end was cuz he didn't have the scabbard with him and he let go of the sword and technically he did win the war.... he just died ^.^ -
Quote:I only read why it was included in the list as that's the important part. The books about Elric and Stormbringer are written by Moorecock, which it says in the article (reading comprehension must not be geeky either) but are referenced in the D&D rule sets because of how cool Stormbringer is.
Were it not for D&D and other pen-and-paper RPGs, CoH would not be here I would wager.
To be a good geek, a ton of reading is required, both fiction and non-fiction. If you think watching movies and youtube makes you a geek, your geek card will not get you far in my world.
Cosplay is has little to do with anything but popularity and just because something is popular, does not mean it is of good quality.
As far as D&D playing a role in the evolution as a key point in RPGs does no mean it's not trash and just because something is trash doesn't mean you don't respect what it did for whatever. And like you said about popularity... being a key point doesn't make it quality either. -
Quote:Reading is not geeky. Geeks do it, but that in itself is not geeky. To not have heard of Stormbringer, to me, is like saying you never heard of Bilbo or King Arthur.
The only sword in that list that would have even considered ranking higher than Stormbringer is Excalibur.
Literature not geeky? Kid, you have no clue how foolish you are for posting that.
I must really be getting old.
Also from what is said Stormbringer is a D&D thing so considering D&D sucks in my opinion why would i or anyone who doesn't care about D&D know about it...also when's the last time you've seen a cosplay of it ^.^ -
Quote:Not about literature or not... those swords just aren't that geeky.I prefer my geek swords to come from literature rather than video games. Nice to see the Swords of the Cross on there.
And don't dis Stormbringer in all it's forms or it'll feed on your soul.
And the comment about stormbringer... the reason it was put on the list they think they character is cool, not the sword. Notice that the murasame isn't a game geeky sword but a sword geek sword as even though it in most games it almost never has any importance...
Caladbolg is another sword that is in a lot of games but is almost always used as the weakest special sword.
My list ism ore about geek recognizability and pure geekiness...
Literary swords i don't consider really geeky cuz literature isn't really geeky... -
Crap list.
The only sword i really didn't know much about was the #4 slot Stormbringer and their excuse is "the character is cool"
Sorry but that list should be more like...
Zangetsu
Buster Sword (movie and regular version)
Sword of Omens
Excalibur
Masamune (Chrono Trigger)
Murasame (if you're a geek you should know this is the opposite of the masamune)
Masamune (Sephiroth's Sword)
Squall's Gunblade
Dragon Dagger (and Sword of Darkness combo or alone ^.^)

Quote:No. As implied by the statement "almost nothing." The subtitling is a joke and unwatchable if you actually want to watch the show and take it all in, at least the all the way up to wear they introduce the female hero.if you're not seeing the subtitles, likely it detoggled (its an occaisional flash glitch on Hulu) the fix is in the lower right sight side of the UI, hit the CC button and activate the subtitles.
Like the first line is "Breaking News" And that is the sub title for THREE sentences. Then there is like 5 sentences not subbed at all. None of the intro to the heroes are subbed and it's just garbage. The people who subbed that should be ashamed of themselves and be fired. if you aren't going to do your job there are plenty of people that will do it for free and would appreciate the work.
It's hard to fault people who will only watch fan-subbed anime when they present trash like this to people. -
Quote:Their target audience is the majority of people in a certain range... the majority of people are in the 1-2k range of monthly earnings... and the certain range of ages the majority of those make in the 1k range..it's just how it is.Stereotype much?
No one buys every issue of every title DC has now. Why would they do it when the numbers start over?
My local store is running a special for all of the #1s. 25% off if you get all of them. It's still a bunch of money, but for the people that place importance in having the first of a series, it's a good deal. Would be surprised if other shops didn't do something similar.
I'm not gonna do it because I don't get very many titles. Green Lanterns, the Flash, and Green Arrow for now. I might dabble in some Batman if I can narrow it down to a title or two.
Not to mention that these companies are multi-dipping with games, comics, movies, and whatever else they can do for each thing and it just becomes unsustainable for anyone that falls into their target demographic (not their actual demographics or all the people who read them) And you put that together with the annual event that crosses over everything and you have to make decision...spend waaaay too much money to keep up, pirate, or just don't keep up, eventually lose interest from missing out and stop reading.
The first of the 3 options is impossible for most everyone
The second of the 3 is illegal and could cost you more than the 1st eventually
The third of the 3 hurts everyone cuz you miss out and they don't sell anything. -
You know what really sucks... is they aren't cancelling DCUO-Legends. It is by far one of the worst piece of garbage comics that I've read of all the comics I've read in the last 2 years or so. Every issue that this Bedard guy writes is frought with horrible mischaracterizations, general bad writing, bad sequential art 9which i have to think is Bedard's fault at this point) and bad mythos. The guy literally doesn't know tons of the mythos and when he uses it he messes it up within the next page or two.
Also it's dumb on DC's part to have The Flashpoint universe shown and then have it not matter at all in the new 52 all you are doing is causing people to get interested in characters and plot points and then not finishing them... like Frankenstein... I would never have thought i'd like that, but I do and if it was that Frankenstein I'd continue reading probably, but with the reboot... probably not. -
Quote:Routh did not nail "the" role. He nailed what the directors wanted. In Superman Returns, I liked the design of the suit even less, but I forgot about that because the actor nailed the role. The only problem was, the story SUCKED and there was too little action, so the movie was a failure in my opinion. People will be fine with the suit design if theres a good story and good acting.
Routh doesn't look enough like Christopher Reeve nor is the way that it was played anywhere near what Reeve's superman evolved into nor the Superma of comics evolved into...
However I think Routh did a good job and is a good actor and would have done an awesome job if he was allowed to play "THE" role. -
oh yeah... the last issue of Birds of Prey pissed me off. Manhunter thinks oracle is dead...what's worse is she is completely unneeded and just randomly introduced in that issue. One could assume they brought her in off panel and told her that oracle was alive but those are some big things to be leaving off the page.
