Quote:no I've said that if the goal is just to decimate the entire country it would be easy...we're not talking about "most Americans"...I've heard enough from family to know that map mistakes in the marines get you thoroughly chewed out
and mortars don't require any of that...nor do claymores...or sniper rifles...or humvees
the fact is you have to keep piling on limits for the Romans to even have a chance
If the goal is to conquer and hold it's an entirely different game.
Also as far as range and ammunition...
IT's been stated that the ammunition is roughly 2 bullets per roman in their millitary. That may seem reasonable at first but the more bullets you waste the more you don't kill. The longer you stay the more you lose the tech advantage because power drains and once the power drains you have to rely on the same thing the Romans are. If you're on the run or hope to maintain things you're going have to explain concepts and those will get out and you'll have to deal with rebellions and such depending on how you conquer...
Quite Frankly the best strategy would be to fly into the capital and send one Marine to land in front of the Emperor and a sniper get a good bead on him and then put on a show pretending that the Marine meeting face to face blows the emperor's head off magically...
that's probably the best way to do it, but i doubt the marines would do it. -
You guys are forgetting that a lot of modern tech does rely on modern telecommunications and electronics...
And not to mention that even if they had a goal of doing x they'd still be a bit lost considering most americans don't have a clue about maps and history. -
Ok would the marines establish the nearest city as a base or would they go directly to rome?
We're going to say, as was common practice there was a messenger that left from where ever the legion was to Rome and when the legion was getting it's butt kicked they'd send a messenger out to say what happened
I would guess that a second legion would start marching almost immediately as soon as the messenger got to Rome... And several messengers would be sent to gather the other legions which would all likely converge on either the 2nd or Rome.
also we're taking it from the position that the marines are just randomly hostile and not play any sort of game? They just intend to conquer and hold right? -
Roman swordmanship teaches stabbing around armor rather than through it as well as using the pommel as a striking instrument
-
Let's try to settle this with a little bit of "role play"
Helicopter is likely the largest vehicle going through right? so how much clearance would a helicopter need and how low to the ground could it be... that gives us a "portal size"
Does the portal make noise? where is it located? is it visible?
I would say that even if the portal doesn't make noise any machine coming through will make noise...
I would say if they could place the portal it would be slightly north of Medolanum on this map http://resourcesforhistoryteachers.w...ire_1_A.d..jpg
So... the portal opens the Marines start coming through... What happens?
Well the first this is likely some people would see what's going on and within a little bit of time a messenger would be sent to the closest Legion. That legion would like react and meet at Medolanum...
If i remember a legion can march like 30 miles in a day...
So at this point is a legion close enough to set up by the time the Marines are ready to do anything
How would the Romans and Marines act? Also would the Marines start off with the goal of taking over an holding or would they be peaceful at first and who would act first? -
Quote:just an aside... when I was taught that and because of the general slowness of certain aspect of that technology RPG and the system it's generally used with AS-400 is used pretty much every where in almost all businesses... And knowing that pretty much guarantees you a pretty good pay check... especially now adays as it isn't a popular thing to learn or be taught ^.^ unfortunately I suck at finding jobs so meh.Which required me to learn this language called RPG (RPG-II, in fact). Five years later I was working at a job that needed someone to help support a very old inventory system written in, that's right, RPG. Which forced me to learn inventory systems. Which would not become useful to me again for a decade.

Quote:No... but one of their common strategies was to have shields up with pole arms on one side stick out and then when the other side charged they ran right into the polearms...The Marines would have guerilla tactics for one. Didn't the Roman armies kinda line up and moce foward untill the two sides where face to face?
The whole march forward till your face to face thing was the western version of Samurai honor. Basically, instead of being "barbaric" they constructed all these rules of war and it got to a point that is more about the show and rules than it was about winning.
Back in Roman times they marched in lines and such but it was only to a point and when the phalanx strategy was likely to fail they adapted.
Quote:Next, range. Marines have it. Romans won't even come close to that with their Javelins and their arrows aren't going to match it either.
Never mind the Marine Sniper that comes with the group to pick off Romans one by one before they know what's happening.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...7175754AAJQ2v4
M16 has an effective firing range of 500-800 meters.
So Romans have half to 1/8 the effective range.
Roman Ballistas had much higher range but was most effective at 500 yards
The fact is that snipers and guns have limited ammo and even if you hit all the targets with your spread fire you're not going to being able to pick off 50,000 men before they reach their effective range which will surely kill you or severely damage your gear/vehicles... and even if you do you're not going to do it 50+ times even if you are perfect shots.
Quote:Never we have the Humvees. 100mph! 100 points for every Roman! That's right! Why even waste the ammo? You can plow right through them! Nevermind the Bulldozers that also have.
Quote:Then lets add in modern weaponry! Grenades/rocket launchers! AOE \o/
Could the Marines win in an extended fight? Possibly. It's a matter of how well they adapt, how quickly they could establish a base, could they get food, could they resupply, would they pick up on the Roman warfare... and can they do it before their numbers are such that they could do it and before marines start giving up or finding an easier way out.
Also it is a matter of what their goals are... if it's just to kill all roman soldiers then they aren't going to win. If it's to destroy the country... that'd be a quick afternoon... if it were to take over the country and maintain control THAT would be where it gets interesting. -
I was trying to stay away from giving examples in my original post but Shigeru Miyamoto would likely be considered a Renaissance man...
And, not to sound arrogant, but the idea needing to know a lot of things about a lot of things has always struck me as the best and natural way to be if you are going to look at being a writer, game designer, whatever (unfortunately I'm on the few people that hold that that i have met in those areas)... and if I was further in the educational system I'd be considered a polymath/Renaissance man. Though in my current situation one might say I'm an aborted polymath ^.^
the reason I say that they are more likely to be called a loser and be on the streets or in their mom's house...it's because our society doesn't reward people like that often. It rewards specialization and the ability to be a drone for the most part. Because of that and because that type of personality is usually so stubborn they are more likely to falter and fail than they are to get anywhere. -
Quote:I never said that plates didn't exist but rather that they are not widely used.So crazy wrong.
Weapon ranges of thousands of yards - the Romans would never even close to combat.
And the comments on the armor... a plate that can deflect or reduce the impact of modern alloy rounds woudn't stop a man shoved piece of low tech metal?
The romans could easily close the distance and had a lot of weapons that they generally didn't use because they didn't need to or it wasn't effective in that era.
Also you're arguing that close range combat would never take place... Sorry but if you are the attacking force and are a ground unit you pretty much have to close the range... otherwise you are looking at small forces going sneaking in and trying to do something which would result in them being out numbered and again be completely open to most if not all the weapons of the Romans, even if Plates for armor. -
You do realize that modern military is set to fight against modern military...
Body armor isn't really "body" armor it's more like chest armor and head protection... and it's almost all ranged fighting.
And oh yeah, I don't think modern military uses anything that can stop arrows usually... we have the tech but pretty sure we don't generally use it.
I'd say a small tactical team that goes and takes out the emperor to take over the empire could easily do it if they did it fast and such...
If you put the two groups against each other on a field of battle the Roman Empire would win as the Marines have like no defense against the Roman Legions...even though the could probably kill a good chunk of the Roman Army. -
What is the victory condition of the combat? Is it...
Roman Empire = Win if they kill the Marine Unit?
Marine Unit = Win if they take over the Empire? or kill the Empire military?
If it's simply to take over the empire... the Marine unit could do it pretty damn quickly and easily... If it was to take out the entire military, they could do it over an extended amount of time but it would take a looooong time. -
Quote:I actually thought that line was a poke at The Doctor has gotten younger every time he regens.Dunno anything about "Dave," but there were some very quick lines of dialogue that can be missed. Like River deciding she would age backward just to mess with people, which conveniently explains away the actress being younger when we first met her in Tennant's Library episode, even though she's supposed to be "older" when she first meets the younger Doctor.
Speaking of... Merlin is said to "age backwards" could it be that Merlin is a Time Lord in Doctor Who continuity? -
I think Ultimate Bishop would be an awesome char to get a series for...
-
Alex is immune to Scott's powers which are solar energy based or "fusion based" which i think gives off more energy than fission, but not positive so maybe...also it might be that both Scott and Alex would be immune to Superman's Heat vision as it is solar powered.

The sad truth is that what would once be called a Renaissance man is what is now called a loser today...
People who have multiple interests in multiple fields and pull them together in different ways to make brilliant things happens... it's not that they don't exist any more it's that they are considered unable to be of value because they aren't consistent about any one thing and their interest is all over the place... and as quick as our world is going they are often said to be looking too much at the future, thinking it is closer than it really is...
In other words...if you want to look for the Leonardo of today the best place to look is on the streets or in basements, still living with their parents. -
Quote:But it would have been funny to see him go...I believe one of the other reasons was narrative. Having him go from Metropolis to Africa to save Lois by hopping there would have been quite a ways into the realm of the absurd in a 10 minute short.

Power Girl I don't know what they are doing with her but she'll likely get a comic back or become part of the JL...
JSA has been kicked out of cannon and put into "Earth-2" they will get their own book that is outside of the cannon of the other series...
The 52 that are relaunching are not the only series that will be back as they've already confirmed a few others will be back like JSA it's just not gonna be this month and we have no date for them -
3700 issues i have of DCU New Earth...yeeeah I'm sad...
So JL starts with 5 years in the past and Batman is hated? i can't wait to here how they fit 20+ years of comic history into 5-8 years. -
The entire over arching plot and the universe if it had nothing to do with the main DCU would have been cool and would have been a great way to set up a new universe...unfortunately that's not what happened.

Quote:And I say anyone who talks like him in what you quoted doesn't know history or understand the creative process...The site Save Star Wars has brought up some powerful testimony against Lucas's 2011 project, from George Lucas in 1988, when he appeared before Congress to decry the colorization of classic black-and-white movies by Turner Entertainment.
It's a well-reasoned, impassioned, but lengthy speech, so here's the first portion:
Lucas probably feels that since he's both the creator and copyright holder, he doesn't have to worry about holding the Star Wars films "in trust". Since his testimony failed to move Congress back then, he now doesn't have to worry about any US copyright laws on the books regarding moral rights, so he doesn't have to worry about what his collaborators on those movies may think. So, James Earl Jones can't have any say, figuratively, in what Darth Vader now does: "NOOOOOOOO!!!!"
Every time someone suggests that it's not worth getting worked up about the things geeks love - comics, sci-fi, cartoons - I try to remind that whatever the aesthetic value of them, they have cultural significance that will make an impact beyond the their niche pop appeal. -
I just read it and I am completely and totally mind blown at just how bad that was...
Ok so lets try to work it out... Why did the DCU change just because of Barry Allen's Mother
At moment that Flash went into the past to save his mother, pulled the entire speed force into himself.
The speed force was gathered by Bart Allen who was shot into the time effected future with Hot streak. Him trying to get back to the past caused him magically to be sent through time to gather the Speed force from those who had it in the DCU continuity and giving it to Flash to be able to run faster to restore time?
This in effect caused all speedsters based on the speed force to be drained of their powers and thus made it so Max never went to the future and Jay never got his powers. meaning that Max altered something in the past that somehow spread across the world to change cosmic history. So an irrelevant person who jumped through time to remain irrelevant was somehow relevant?
That also doesn't explain how Earth was rotating faster/slower so as to make Superman fall on metropolis rather than Smallville and Doom to arrive 10+ year earlier. Nor does it explain how that changed cosmic history to have the black lanterns be around since the reason Black Lanterns came about is because of Superman...
Of course if you backwards engineer the whole thing and realize that Flash didn't exist during the Crisis on Infinite Earths and thus didn't stop Anti-Monitor and thus the Earth should exist to begin with...
So the whole thing makes no sense...at all.
I'd prefer they'd have just had a mini comic where the 2 page spread where they ae like "3 universes a becoming 1" and then have the monitors do a quick explanation that the universe was originally 1 but was torn into 3 and then all those other things happened and now they need to reunify it for whatever reason.... make it like a 10 page comic and just release it along side the #1s for free.
It's a far better explanation than Flashpoint could ever hope to be and it doesn't make all these comics go out with a whimper...in fact it would have been better had they not even mentioned anything before now and it would have been much better done and received. -
Quote:you know usually I would be like right on and be all up with the philosophizing... but in the case of Star Wars...Lucas has sadly become the quintessential example of what happens when an artist forgets the meaning of the word "done".
The sad thing about continually tweaking his past works is that sooner or later he's going to die and the question's going to be was his last "re-tweaking" really the final version of what he intended to last for eternity or would he have just redone it again assuming he lived a bit longer. Were I him I'd prefer to have absolute control over what I considered to be the definitive "finished" version rather than to let the world wonder if he wouldn't have just kept re-mixing it forever.
I laugh and point at all the idiots rebuying the same damn movie over and over again and being pissed that it was changed just a little fraction of a bit again and then having the nerve to complain that Lucas edits and edits and edits the damn thing and sells a new version every 6 months.
At some point it becomes less a commentary on artistry and more a commentary on just how ludicrously stupid humans actually are. -
I just remembered how they killed Wolverine in the Ultimate universe... Someone drowned him. Basically, the idea is as long as you don't destroy the part of the brain that causes the regen and it has enough time to regen Wolverine, Sabertooth, X-23, and Dakin? (Wolverine's Son) will all regen from anything... So Assumedly as long his brain is attached to a lung or his regen is fast enough (ie within several minutes) he will survive.
Not quite sure how nuclear bombs kill exactly (i think there are several causes isn't there?) he'd range from easily survive to no way he'd survive...
Hypothetically, if Wolverine burnt down to all but the basic "living" part of his brain and someone found him soon after this happened and kept the brain tissue alive he could in theory completely regenerate from that...He could probably even regen from a single cell if that single cell lived long enough to start the regen process...
And that's pretty much guaranteed considering that his bones and spinal cord are encased in nearly indestructible metal...
The problem with kill Wolverine is that it assumes that death is an instant, but we've seen time and again that it isn't... Even if you drowned wolverine and eradicated everything you could, based on the rules that are put forth for his regen and what we know of human biology and what we know of his biology nothing short of destroying his adamantium lace skeleton would kill him permanently... it would take time for him to regen, but he'd still regen. -
personally i won't be buying any comics less i can actually read them...which means a friggin zoom function on whatever app they sell them on. I can't believe marvel and DC and any app for reading comics are too stupid to put zoom functions in and I'm not supporting stupid people ^.^

they probably should have talked more about this but i'm pretty sure all the DCnU books are sold on http://www.comixology.com/ not positive, but pretty sure.
