BTW, CaptHitGuy, there is a thread about the Champions community abuse over in the Comics forum, which is about as off-topic as we get around here. I'm sure your unique perspective will be both appreciated and shared over there, too.
As for GR being free... GR will not be free. However, Paragon Studios has a lengthy history of free updates that will not be changing any time soon, and the content for GR doesn't appear to have been completely finalized yet. (At least, to us outsiders.) Yes, there was some talk about one or two GR features (IE Ultra Mode) being freely released in an update...but don't sweat that--we don't know anything yet. Could be some news this week, though.

Once you get the Accolade, you have to log out for a while and let it charge up. With the dayjobs, you can earn "charges" before and after the badge awards--the Accolades are only after. (This is a simplified answer, but I think it may be what you are experiencing.)

Dur, I worked so hard to get that post right and still ended up Cut-n-Pasting the wrong line. In any case, my crab uses backpack-only powers. Web Grenade is a gun power. What I was getting at, mostly, was eliminating redraw.

Nope. You could summon your HVAS and craft a new core for backup, but you can never have more than one core on you.

How many Ballista?
I like to solo on my VEAT, he's tough. But after sighting my eighth Ballista, I O-portaled out and dropped the mission. They were almost all +1, and the spawns were so close to each other that their bubbles overlapped.
I was really looking forward to this arc, but how many of these are necessary?
