Quote:I've wanted minimal fx for as many sets as possible for a long time. Why can't my Ice Armor tank just have a supercold invisible aura that protects her? Justifications are easy, more options for people are better.I really like this idea. Ice armor, for example, could be kind of an icy aura and the ice armor could appear when hit. Same with some of the others. A fiery aura and flames appearing to block the hits would be an interesting visual.
I run suppressclosefxdist 99 all the time just so I don't have to look at all the power effects. -
Quote:I didn't ask my question very well. Essentially what I was wondering was whether you have to add slots to any of those six passives and toggles to get to 95%. I've leveled my character build in MIDS to 50 (all slots are allocated and most are filled), I have all three SR toggles and all three SR passives, but MIDS still shows my DDR as being 90.9%. Do I need to add slots to the passives (the three passives are single slotted to carry LotG recharges)?Dromio,
Capping DDR is what makes SR what it is. While all the other folks out there layering up the defense can have it negated in an instant, SR gets to laugh defense debuffs off.
The DDR, at least these days, stops the dreaded cascading defense failures that SR once suffered from.
So to answer the question, if you're not sitting at 95% DDR on an SR user at 50, you've done something very mean to your character.
I'll play with it in MIDS and see what I can find out.
EDIT: Yep, looks like I need to add slots to the passives. I have a 50 DB/SR scrapper but I never tried not slotting the passives with her. Looks like I wind up with a little more DEF than I thought I would because of those slots, but that's OK. 95.2% DDR with 47.5 melee and ranged and 46.9 AoE will be plenty for keeping me out of trouble.
EDIT NUMBER TWO: Person34 somehow understood and answered my poorly asked question! Apparently I can't write or read well! Sheesh! Thanks to all of you that answered! -
Quote:How big a deal is it to cap DDR? I think in order to get to the 95% you have to have all six of the DEF powers in SR at least three slotted for DEF, is that correct? I did a build where I got to the softcap without putting extra slots in the passives, but I'm worried about DDR as MIDS only shows the build at 90+%. Although now that I'm typing this I'm thinking that maybe that's because MIDS isn't seeing the character as level 50...Defense debuffs are of little concern to a softcapped SR, especially a Brute (higher base HP and all that). Generally mobs will not be able to stack enough -def in a short enough window to drop your defense a meaningful amount - you're far more likely to die on an SR from a streak of bad luck (i.e. several hard hits in rapid succession while at the softcap) than you are from cascading defense failure.
45.3% is probably not enough cushion to keep you at softcap (a -10% debuff would drop you to 44.8% after DDR is factored in), but 47-48% will generally be enough to keep cascading defense failure from being an issue (would mean you'd be able to take four to six -10% debuffs before you're dropped to the softcap). Again, a softcapped SR is much more likely to die from a series of lucky hits than they are from their defense breaking down. -

Quote:Oddly, the only controller I have is Ice/TA. I think he's around level 40. He works really well, but I suffer from having too many things I can do in battles. Sometimes I wind up favoring TA powers, sometimes I favor Ice. Not a lot of offense in the combo, but you couldn't ask for a better teammate.I have never in 2 years of playing seen an Ice/Trick Arrow Controller. There is one guy on the boards I know of who plays one and says its good, but I've yet to actually see one.
It's a strange combination for sure. I didn't pick it for any weird reason, or because it was rare, or anything. It was just what I came up with at the time of creating the character. I don't think I've ever seen another one but I admit I haven't looked very hard.

Quote:Our family has enjoyed it a lot. We're big Scooby fans though. So, has anyone else been enjoying the new Scooby-Doo series? Not only does it have what is quite possibly the best incarnation of Fred (Dense, and an obsession with Traps that hasn't been seen since Freddie's obsession with Red Herring), but I've also been really digging the references they've snuck in (Such as a teenage Pebbles and Bam-Bam seen in a beach based episode, Daphne humming the classic Scooby-Doo theme, and Shaggy and Scooby watching a Vincent Van Ghoul marathon). And I also like the new art style.
What about you guys?
The Mancrab one where Fred freaks out when Daphne disappears was great! -
I love discussions like this; I sometimes think a good 50% of my enjoyment of MMOG's comes from out-of-game discussion, and I like the conceptual talk the best.
What if the aggro cap for everyone else was lowered (fill in your number here)? Would that make a good distinction between tanks and everyone else? Or would that make everyone else naturally safer?
What if the taunt effectiveness of all the other AT's was adjusted to be less? Would that help?
Stacking is tricky. I sometimes think that stacking might be more situational than anything. If missions were more active, if foes were attacking rather than waiting to be attacked, then tanks would stack better. If you could make a mission where you HAVE to split the party, where you have to defend BOTH ends of a bridge, etc. you'd have reasons to stack tanks.
It's always seemed to me that Defenders and Tankers are similar in a lot of ways, perhaps we could look at why Defenders stack so well and get some ideas to help Tankers do so?
Just thinking out loud... -
Yep, my Ice tank is capped for Smash/Leth and Neg/NRG. Oh well, I was hoping a debuff might lower their chances to hit me (whether AV, Boss, LT, or minion) by even just a little bit more.

Quote:No problem from my side. I'd just like to see those sets able to differentiate themselves from each other. They've been sharing animations for a very long time.A unilateral change to existing animations would probably just upset people, who may not WANT a different look.
Now, a new OPTION of how to look... say, a "Finesse" animation set for Broadsword (Stabbing/Swashbuckling style), "Berserk" for the Battle Axe (More aggressive appearance, bigger windup with faster blows), and... something else for the Mace (Some sort of combination of the two? The mace/club could be used with both finesse and precision, or wildly aggressive, so I'm not sure which to go for...) and people would be happy without anyone getting upset over something changing they didn't want to. -
Quote:How would Darkest Night affect those numbers?About this, it's a non-issue. Yes, AVs have a final chance to hit of 75%, which use to be a problem without overkill defense levels. However since the defense changes a while back they have 50% chance to hit, and a 1.5 Acc modifier instead of a 75% to-hit with 1.0 acc modifier. If your at the soft cap (45% defense) the AV only has a 7.5% chance to hit you.
-
Agreed about Broadsword. I just don't think alternates should be really considered until all sets have unique animations.
-
Quote:Do Axe and Mace still have the same animations as each other? If so, one should get different animations before unique sets get more options. Way back it was decided that Broadsword and Katana shouldn't be animation clones, that same decision should apply to Axe and Mace. One of the projects we are working on is to create more alternate animations for various powers. The animators asked me which powers I wanted to have this applied to and rather than simply come up with a list myself, I thought it would be interesting to open the discussion to you the fans.
Caveat:
Powers with Alternate Animations will still have nearly the exact same Animation Lengths, so this thread is not about creating shorter animations for various powers.
So, let's hear it! Tired of doing Backflips with Eviscerate? Sick of beating your chest like Tarzan? Eyebeams not your cup of tea? Tell us about it! -
It'll be interesting to see how the costuming works in John Carter. If I remember correctly them red martians don't wear much as a matter of course. Dejah Thoris isn't dressed that way in that picture because she's a damsel in distress, she's "dressed" that way because that's the everyday outfit in Helium.
I love the John Carter books, I really hope the movie is good. -
Quote:For my part I'm 99% happy with Axe the way it is. I recognize that I was happy before I read anything about comparisons, and that comparisons shouldn't reduce that. Would I like to see positive changes to Axe (and Mace)? Abosolutely. But I'd be lieing if I said I was upset with Axe, or with Mace as some kind of competitor.lol
Really if you want to push Battle Axe for some type of buff you're selling yourself short by trying to make it an exact statistical copy of War Mace, a set it's already virtually the equivalent of.
What your argument should be directed at is Stone Melee which has a higher ST and AoE score compared to both Axe and Mace while it gets a complete pass on the weapon redraw animation that lowers dps on both of those sets.
Heavy Mallet does 101. damage with a 75% chance for knockdown while it's equivalent in Axe has roughly the same end cost but does 87. damage with a 50% knockdown chance, and it suffers from the weapon redraw on top of that, like WM, BS etc.
I'm not opposed to Axe getting some type of buff though I don't think it underperforms at all, but making War Mace out to be the boogyman to that end is just beyond silly because Mace has had a stigma for such a long time as a terrible power set that even after it's buff it's seldom seen on new Tanks and rarely comes up for build advice in these forums.
If someone were going to push for anything, it should be to have Axe and Mace statistically closer to Stone in damage, and all weapon sets should have the redraw hitch removed with its dps penalty, just like Stone Melee already has (well never had, an issue Castle and BaBs have tackled in the past with only a 'maybe someday').
I admit I sure do wish that 10 max targets was on Pendulum though. That's one thing that bugs me when I'm buried in a mass of mooks and would really like to Pendulum and let the Zig sort them out. That nice big cone and that low target limit! Argh!
I'd be happy to lend my support to any movements to get Axe and Mace brought up toward Stone. -
Quote:I agree. I would also throw in that presenting Axe as having KD is a little misleading, as not one of the powers in Axe has 100% chance for KD. There's mitigation there certainly, but it's unpredictable. The only difference between the tier 1 and tier 2 attacks in Mace and Axe is stun/KD, and chance to stun/KD. Everything else is identical.
Even though the stuns in Bash and Pulverize are pretty useless, given that most players only take one of the two anyway, and Jawbreaker is available at level 8, IMO those attacks are hardly a distinguishing feature between the sets. As a matter of fact, I'd describe that point of comparison as trivial compared to Clobber's damage and the differences between the tier 8 and 9 cones.
As you mention it's in the 8 and 9 powers that Mace really separates itself from Axe. Cone sizes are a huge difference at 8 (a 10 degree cone is a cone in name only) and the max targets is massive at tier 9. Mace already has an advantage from those stats. Add on though that Mace (not Axe which is supposedly the KD set) gets 100% KD on the tier 8 and 9 and Mace's pretty clearly better than Axe.
I actually think the max targets on Cleave and Pendulum got swapped. Why make a 10 degree cone with a max targets of 10? I doubt it's even possible to hit 5, much less 10 with that narrow of a cone. In the meantime the 180 degree cone gets a max targets of 5. I gotta think those things got transposed. -
Quote:Nuts, I'll be out of the country. I'd really like to do a Tanker Tuesday at least once with my Ice/Axe. Maybe next time around on Virtue.Hi all,
Our next reload will be to Virtue on the 22nd of this month! We'll meet in the usual place at the usual time (see sig for details). If you don't already have a Tank, now is the time to get one started, if you already have one, bring them to the event!
Anyone have a preference on a TF or Trial?
See you all in a week!
*as always, all levels and power set are welcome, as long as you're a Tank!*

Quote:I also think that when you jump into a group the first tic of the damage aura is one that might trigger the proc, which means that it has a commensurately larger chance of hitting at least one foe. It also means that you can front load a good chunk of damage based on the number of procs. This is true ... until you hit the ED cap. Once you've reached the ED cap, you get better returns by adding the damage proc on top of everything else instead of merely more damage SO/IO stacking.
You're also neglecting to consider the value of damage spikes in reducing not only the amount of damage you need to do, but the number of attacks required to deliver that damage. Every time a damage proc takes effect is the equivalent to 16 seconds worth of damage aura duration. This can dramatically hasten the defeat of hostiles. It's effectively a 20% chance for a "critical hit" every 10 seconds ... which is nothing to sneeze at when your enhanced damage is already in ED cap range (particularly on a Tanker).
I would add that out of thousands of signatures on the many boards I frequent "Verbogeny is one of many pleasurettes afforded a creatific thinkerizer" is the first one I have ever commented positively on in a post. Spectacularifically done.

Quote:Augh! I swear I even looked at the tooltip and it said ACC. I'm heading up to Virtue right now to see if I can work that thing in somewhere.Even though it's called the "Kismet +Acc", but it's actually 6% ToHit. Confusing, I know, and I have no idea why the devs decided to name it that way.
I have no APP's on my Ice/Axe, mostly because I couldn't get to Ice Storm, and that was all I really wanted.
Maybe this weekend I'll sit down and try and get her all entered into MIDS and post her for you guys to take apart.
-
Is the Kismet +Acc or +ToHit? I thought it was +Acc so I didn't worry too much about getting it. But if it's +ToHit I really need to find a spot for it.
I'd be scared to post my Ice/Axe build, I think it'd get laughed at. I've gone way out of my way to try and boost Ranged defense to help with the Fire/Psi holes so I think it's a little strange. Works well though. I keep thinking I should respec to move slots out of Tough since I never use it. -
Quote:You could do both, if you have the funds (or you might do one and then work toward the other). Remember you get two builds now.In my haste I forgot to add an explanation lol.
In each of these builds, I took what I feel are the best components and meshed them with my build. I changed the IO's to smashing haymaker (I only crushing impact because I already had these IO's on him) and I changed up some slotting and IO choices for better enhancements and bonuses without giving up too much on the power's stats themselves.
The first altered build gives me defense in the 40's with E/NE in the 45's with the use of APP's.
The Second build chooses weave instead and doesn't get Icicles and Hasten until 47 and 49 respectively. This build gets my defenses in the 50's. It doesn't afford an APP but I don't mind that.
I think im gonna with the the build with the fighting pool, however it's still open to critique! Thanks again!

Quote:I always thought this was because you were set to Hidden. If you do /hide is anything selected in there?First question: Since i17 I have been getting this [AUTO-REPLY-Chat Hidden] prompt every time someone sends me a tell. This prompt always follows their original tell message and I am not sure how to turn it off or on so this doesn't keep popping up? I went to the Options Menu under the Chat section but couldn't find anything that relates to this.
Thanks!
I reserve the right to be wrong, I don't pretend to know even half of what more active question answerers know. -
Quote:Nice demon names! Maybe "Lost Hope" could be "Despair"? That way they'd all be one word names.
Hope it's OK to make a suggestion.

Quote:Ice Armor has Chilling Embrace which, among other nice things, is an excellent taunt aura. You can also choose to take the damage aura Icicles which will grab you some nice PBAoE aggro as well. Thanks Blood! I understand now why DB probably wouldn't be the best. I haven't ever read up on or tried the powerset, same with ice armor, so I thought it'd be cool to combine the two. But I haven't tried Ice Melee either, so I achieve the same effect either way.
I assume that Ice/Ice is also less tight of a build that will allow me to take the power pools I need? Is Frozen aura also a "taunt aura"? I thought pretty much everything tanks could do offered some sort of taunt.
