I've "sucked it up and dealt" with games becoming more and more focused on "challenge" (as well as "realism" and "shooting") for the past twenty years.

And frankly, I'm sick of having to bow to extroverts and challenge seekers. There's worlds and worlds of things out there for extroverts and challenge seekers already. One of the main points (not the main point, not the only main point, but one of a handful) that draws me to this game and keeps me with this game is the fact that it was unlike the rest, that it actually catered to ease and solo-play (solo play doesn't have to be easy, and easy doesn't have to be solo; these are separate things). I've seen franchises, companies, and genres I love morph, "evolve", and die many, many times, and of late the trend in the video game world has been towards conformity, towards making everything the same.

City of isn't there yet, but the steps they've taken in development of the Incarnate system have, thus far, seemed quite clearly to be steps towards that. I'm open to being pleasantly surprised by i20 content, and I'll be the first to praise Paragon if I'm wrong about it, but what I've heard and seen so far has not given me cause for hope.

I do not want to see this game's end-game be like every other game's end-game, where the idea is "tactics", "challenge", and "teams/raids". City of has, thus far, avoided that path, and I will not "suck it up and deal with" yet another game I love going down that same old path everyone else has trod before.

I've had quite enough of having to "suck it up and deal with it", thank you.
In seriousness, why not try something like Ultima Offline? That would allow for an MMO feel but with only you on the server, plus you could customize gameplay pretty much the way you'd like. Seems like for an introvert something like that would be the best solution.

I disagree about the Incarnate system. I don't know how they could have made it much more solo friendly without simply handing out shards. Perhaps the shards could drop more often when solo, but I don't think the rate is bad now. I have an uncommon on one character and a common on another, that's it, and that's been fine for me. I can run tip missions to get hero points to make my characters much stronger with IO's I couldn't get before (what a crazy great boon for solo characters, or at least mine, that has been) and while I'm running tips I get shards. No biggie.

Just because this one step wasn't a step too far for you doesn't mean they're not still headed in a direction that won't be acceptable to you in the future. They've taken steps towards making this game's "end game" very much like the end game of other MMOs (in particular, the granddaddy of them all and the 800-pound gorilla); while they're not there yet, do you want to encourage the development of this game to ultimately end up there?
I'm not sure why I would worry about the Incarnate stuff becoming team only. Is there some reason I should believe that having established Incarnate content as not requiring a team they are all of a sudden going to turn around and make it team only? I've got plenty of more important stuff going on in my life, I don't need to worry about things that MIGHT happen in the online game that I like.

I'm a casual player. It's just a game. If I were going to get all hopped up about it then I'm not sure I would be a casual player.

Telling people that want casual stuff "You've had that for six years, now it's our turn" is completely missing the point. The point we casuals are making is "You have every other MMO in the world, leave ours alone."

Casuals are not the ones being selfish here. Folks wanting this MMO to be like all the others are, because apparently they're not satisfied with the hundreds of other choices they have and want to take away the one choice we have too.

I wish I could use the words that truly describe my feelings about this. It's hard to express such outrage I feel with polite and politic words.
    <shrug>

I'm casual. I started in the open beta and have played ever since. In that time I've been in no more than five PuG's. I'm in a very small SG, where only if everyone is on can we field an eight man team, so I solo well over 95% of the time. I have two kids in elementary school, a 50 hour a week job, and responsibilities in two households since my dad passed away. I'm apparently not one of your "we casuals" though because I've enjoyed the Incarnate content and other high level additions to the game.

  5. One thing I like about Permafrost is that it allows me, with the Winter's Gift IO, to get to 100% slow resist. I think about taking Permafrost out every once in a while, but it's great as a home for the 3% DEF and I just love that slow resist.

I'm not sure I follow. If you're at perma-dom as long as you keep up on clicking Domination when it becomes available you're not only in Domination at the more strategic times but at the less strategic times as well.

Mine too. By far my favorite tip mission and last night I was sitting waiting for the ambushes wondering what was taking so long. On x7. I sure hope they can find some sort of good middle ground; I loved the frenetic stacked up ambushes.

It was nice to have something a bit different.

I was able to run an ITF last night and besides the reward piece at the end, I got 9 shards that dropped from foes during the missions.

so now up to 2 components and 10 shards that I haven't combined yet and everything has come from the original mender mission and the ITF. not 1 shard in several hours and a couple dozen solo missions. with those missions set on at least +1/x3
Ugh, the RNG is just not liking you at all. There's got to be something else going on maybe? I ran three tip missions at x7 on my tank yesterday and even without going out of my way to clear the maps got a shard. It sure seems like in the 15 tip missions (at least) you should have gotten something! If you're getting shards in the ITF though I can't think of any reason other than RNG hate that you wouldn't be getting shards.

    Hang in there!

EDIT: Are you running all the tips in the same zone? Maybe they don't drop in the RWZ or something? Maybe it's a zone thing? Weird.

More importantly, resistance debuffs are resisted naturally by resistance: If you have 90% resistance, you also have 90% resistance to resistance debuffs. This gives tanks a very strong advantage against resistance debuffs, as their cap is much higher and their base resistance values are larger. A scrapper at his cap of 75% resistance will feel 2.5 times as much debuff as a tanker at his cap of 90%.

These incremental factors -- higher health, layered defense and resistance, much better debuff resistance -- all combine to make tanks much more hardy than other ATs.
As I mentioned above, at least in the case of Ice vs. SR, SR has almost twice the defense debuff resistance as the Ice Armor set.

It's kind of funny really, because in a lot of ways Ice doesn't fit in at all with what you're saying. It's mitigation is really only barely layered (a little bit of mitigation from recharge debuffs, a little bit from damage debuffs, resist to cold, and defense based to S&L and N& NE, essentially nothing to handle fire or psi) and its debuff resistance to its primary form of mitigation (defense) is half of what it is on scrappers or brutes.

This also applies to most pool powers; Weave, CJ, Hover and Stealth give Brutes and Scrappers 75% the defense that Tanks get. (Maneuvers is an anomoly; scraps, brutes and tanks all get the same defense value from it and Defenders and some other ATs get a higher value.) But please note that defense *set bonuses* are the same for every AT.

Since the soft-cap is the same for every AT, this obviously gives tanks a big advantage in reaching the soft-cap, especially for defense-based armor sets. (Though the pool power difference helps a bit even for armor sets without defense powers.)

The same difference applies in resistance armor sets that are shared between the ATs; scrap and brute armors have 75% of the resistance value of the tanker versions. One difference between resistance and defense is that not all ATs have the same resistance caps; scraps cap out at 75% for each resist type, where tanks and brutes cap out at 90%. So although brutes can reach the same resist caps that tanks do, they need more outside buffing to do so.

I won't rehash the reasons why resist bonuses are so much harder to get and therefore less desirable than defense bonuses, but there's no question it's true and likely to remain so. However, since having *both* defense and resistance is as desirable (if not more so) than having one or the other, though it may seem counter-intuitive, this actually gives resistance based sets an advantage. Resistance sets can, and do, get significant amount of defense from set bonuses and pool powers, but there's no equivalent option for defense sets to build resistance to useful levels.
Absolutely correct in the last part; I think it's a problem with the system that hurts defense tanks quite a bit.

Regarding the start of your post I think it's worth pointing out that while an Ice tank may start at higher defense values it's also very difficult, if not impossible to completely cap his defenses because they're type based and not positional. An SR scrapper is going to have a much easier time capping because they only have to worry about three positions, all of which are common in set bonuses. The Ice tank will probably only cap to S&L and E&NE but have very little going on against Fire and Psi, and only resists for Cold. That same SR scrapper is also going to come out at 50 with almost twice the defense debuff resist as the Ice Tank, despite the Icer being a Tank and depending very heavily on DEF.

There was a predownload, I think it's been two or three weeks now. It probably snuck in on your's when you weren't looking.
  12. Hello!

I've been playing CoH for a long time, but I've never played one of what I would call the "crowd control" AT's: Controllers and Dominators. But recently I started a Mind/Fire and I'm really enjoying the character quite a bit. I've been ultra conservative though, and I've been running missions at pretty low difficulty up to level 42. I can tackle a 3 mob spawn pretty well by now of course, but every time I try to take myself out of that comfort zone I get beat down. I have questions, most are probably pretty basic to Dominator vets, but I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Currently I'm level 42, with Fireball out of the APP. I have some IO slotting, and hope to do a couple purple sets (which I've never done on any other character), but I'm not sure I'll have the cash when I get to 50. I've got the cash to do some good IO stuff though, I can post my build (though it might be embarassing) if people think it would help.

    - How do you handle a mob that can't be held/confused in one shot, or even two it seems? I know about the stacking, but confuse especially never seems to stack the way I think it should. Domination raises the mag, is that correct (I looked at Domination in the game and I didn't see anything talking about raised mag)? How much? I got into it with Silent Blade and she killed me over and over.

    - How do you handle large groups of mobs? I have Total Domination, Mass Hypno, Terrorize, and Mass Confuse, but I always seem to have a horrible time when I get larger numbers of mobs. One or two get missed and then as I'm dealing with them I have that timer in my head shrieking that all the others are about to wake up and whack me. This could be a panic issue as much as anything else. A perhaps extreme example is the "Gunslinger Action Figure" tip mission with all its ambushes. I love that mission on most of my other characters but it just eats this character up!

    - I'm assuming that when you get to perma-dom (and I'd like to) you run with Hasten on auto-fire and manually fire Domination? Any tricks to that?

    - I have trouble when I'm not the aggressor, again like with ambushes or unexpected things. Where I don't get to initiate and set things up the way I want. Any thoughts? On my other characters, mostly melee, it's probable that I just smash my way through.

This is a new playstyle for me. I do have multiple 50's of all flavors except Controller, Defender, and Dominator. I'm really enjoying this character, despite the issues, and that makes me think that if I can get past some of these issues this could be a memorable character for me.

    Thanks!

I'm going with fire for those reasons plus the slow and AoE from RoF and that it continues the fire theme for the character. Really though Embrace is enough of a reason for me, no reason not to take advantage of such a great power.

Personally, however, I think you could save yourself the money for enhancing a dual build and just burn a few purple inspirations when the triangles appear, easily softcap defense, and have a strong all around damage build. You have the advantage of doing all the preparation you need before starting up that AV fight, so I don't think this is unreasonable to do.

To Dromio - My build is posted in post 7. Also, I have a thread that discusses my disappointment with the alpha slot using my dominator as a reference.

Arg, and I even scrolled back before I posted. It's been that kind of day.

I was planning on doing essentially what you say: getting fireball, RoF, and firebreath. We'll see how it goes, I've never played a Dominator in a lot of years of playing CoH.

I'll check out that link after I get the kids to bed, thanks!
  15. Wow, good stuff here!

I'm only at 24 with my Mind/Fire but I really think this might be a character I do some investing in. Right now she's not the fastest soloer in the world, but she does pretty well. I can definitely see though that as I level the things I'll be doing in battle will be different.

Smoothjedi, if you get a chance and could post or PM me a build that would be great. I really feel like it should be possible to get a build that's set up well for both ST and AoE damage depending on what's being fought. But I'd like to see how your build looks compared to the builds already posted.

When I kind of planned I found myself taking a bunch of stuff to hold LotG recharges. Is that common? Or maybe it'll be more common now that Fitness is inherent?

Has anyone figured out the effects of the Incarnate slot on getting to perma-dom?

    Thanks!
  16. Excellent! Thanks you two! I never noticed the slider, I'll look when I get a chance!
  17. Hello!

When I spend Hero points at the place in Atlas to get recipes how can I get them to be a level other than what I am? I'd like to get recipes of a level so that I can make a mentoring build with my character, so I don't want level 50 recipes, more like level 30.

Maybe be mentored down when I get them? Is this possible to do?

    Thanks!

    Any help would be appreciated!
I'm leveling a Mind/Fire too, and would love to hear some advice. I'm really thinking this is a character I want to work with and spend some INF on. I'm only level 15, so I'm not very high yet.
  19. Dang, why did I fall so far behind I wonder. I'm going to have to take almost two levels of missions from a different arc (or street hunt) to get to 15. Oh well, at least I'm already almost halfway there.

    Thanks!
  20. Hello!

I'm working my way through the Loyalist Power arc but I've hit a dead end after Praetor Sinclair. I was level 13.3 at the time and have since worked to 14 by doing a Responsibility arc, but I still don't seem to have anyone to talk to to continue my Power arc.

Am I too low? Do I need to go to a different zone?

    Thanks for any help!

  21. Not yet. It is a requested feature, but hasn't made it into the game yet.

  23. I moved a level 50 hero to the villain side but I can't seem to get the Patron arc(s). Who do I talk to? I don't see it in Ouro either. I'm sure this is something silly, but could someone let me know how to get the patron arc when I've possibly outleveled it?

  24. Already pre-ordered! I'm really looking forward to it. It sounds like it's darker than the previous Tiffany Aching books.

I saw that it had been released overseas so much earlier. I wonder why?

By customizing the powers with pastel or dark colors (which depends on the exact power set) you can get minimal effects on most sets.

Has the OP gone through this exercise with the powerset he wants minimal FX on?

Admittedly I can't make some of the powers as translucent as I'd like: Burn, for example, is hard to get right. I want to see what's going on around my character when I use Burn -- the default coloring obscures too much of the action.
I've done that on my Ice Armor tanker, but I still run suppressclosefxdist 99 (and have for years). The ice armors, even colored dark, still aren't something I like to see. Heck, I don't like to see the goofy ringy windy effect of Combat Jumping, much less blocky Ice Armor. I want to see my costume and that's it.

Suppressclosefxdist works for what I'm seeing, but it doesn't keep other people from seeing my character without the blocky ice, so it's not the perfect solution.
