Obviously there's been an arms race of sorts in these kinds of games in terms of giving the player more tools of destruction from square one. But does that make for a better game or even a better gameplay experience?

Let's say a game starts you off with a parachute, grappling hook, and the standard grenades and guns. You are given a mission to take out X enemy combatant. Instead of it being some big conflict that the game can hinge on, it turns into the simple reflex of throwing your grappling hook at your opponent and then filling his skull with lead as you fling him back.

With great power comes great responsibility, but it seems like open worlds negate that responsibility quite easily. Compared to a solely single player, linear narrative where everything down to ammo, weapon type, and player health can be regulated to make for a more challenging and lasting encounter, does the ability to do street races or blow up random things really make for a better game?
Depends. Some people like those sorts of games better, other people like the other kind better.

Having a variety of things to do is good, and a linear game can give you variety. But, because it is linear, your player is forced into all of that variety, even if they don't like some bits. In a less linear game, the player can seek out the bits that they enjoy and skip over the others. (For example, I don't like street races, so I don't do them. If a linear game has a driving level, I have to do it to get back to doing the bits I do like)

An open world game is worse for telling a story since the player will wander off and forget whats happening, and you lose the sense of pace, but better for the player to make up their own stories: That go kill x people thing, maybe you go in with guns and grenades, maybe you steal a helicopter, use it to winch up a petrol tanker and then drop it on the x enemies. In a linear game, the designer would have to think to add the helicopter and the petrol tanker and it would be one of the limited number of designed solutions.

In terms of fun, is lego better when you are following the instructions to build what the set was designed for, or when you are given those peices and can what you want?

I thought the idea of proliferation was to give the ATs access to more themes of superpowers?

Changing one power isn't a deal breaker for it, otherwise Stalkers would never get any.
  3. Another option (if rage for scrappers would be overpowered) might be to have rage stop scrappers from criticaling when its active, trading the random damage for a more consistant damage boost.

Or, maybe have it so scrapper rage increases critical hit chance when active (with a lower base damage buff)

  5. The Prisoner, for just simply being a better show.

Actually, watch the tv movies, The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler.

    Truly awesome.
  7. 1. The Prisoner

police squad is very good, but The Prisoner is iconic and completely insane

    2. Kolchak: the Night Stalker

    Kolchak takes it.

    3. Dungeons & Dragons

As much as I love Bruce, I enjoyed watching D&D more

    4. Firefly

    I never really liked Dollhouse.

Really? I just assumed The Prisoner would win.

They are allowed under the rule that they had less than 33 episodes.

Harpers Island was a mini-series (albeit a full-season one). It had a story with a beginning and an end. It told the story. Should there be a sequel? Perhaps, but the original story has already been told now.
Allowed because its not counted as a miniseries, as it had 6 or more episodes.

The Prisoner sort of falls into both categories. It was a series (with two seasons) and then a modernized mini-series. I liked both, but wish the mini-series had adhered more to the original story instead of doing a kinda-sorta-related storyline.
The original Prisoner was one 17 episode series.
  10. 1. The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr

Mainly because of Bruce, but also because Lord Bowler rocked.

    2. Crusade
Crusade had the potential to be better than babylon 5 and never got a chance.

    3. Eerie, Indiana
    Good, fun, creepy kids show.

    4. The Prisoner
Very very strange, very very good.

    5. Twin Peaks
Very tough call, but Twin Peaks has had a greater, wider impact than Firefly.

    6. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Going for this because it fits the remit of the draft better.

    7. Kolchak: the Night Stalker

Just for the episode where he had to sew the zombie's mouth shut.

    8. Harper's Island
Slasher flick as a TV series was a great idea.
  11. 1. Pirates of Dark Water

OK, its a kids show, but I liked it, so... yeah.

    2. Freakazoid
Never really got into CB, but Freakazoid was funny

    3. Dungeons & Dragons
Love Spidey, but D&D was a classic

    4. Afro Samurai
Meh, neither one did anything for me, so going for Mr Jackson

    5. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
A true comedy/sci-fi classic, the iconic animations alone should get this through

    6. Police Squad!

It's got an exclimation mark in the title!

    7. The Honeymooners
Archer is ok, but... it doesn't go to the moon, alice.

    8. The Tick

    Spoon! Again!
  12. Hmm, keeping ti relevant to CoX and looking for theme music?

I have been giving this some thought.

I think, personally, the CoH theme tune is Cartoon Heroes by Aqua. Or possibly Avenues and Alleyways

    Breaking it down?

Blue Side, probably I Need A Hero or maybe The Greatest American Hero Theme

Red side? Not sure maybe Bad Guys or The Imperial march or Bad to the Bone

Going forward, from what I've gleaned, I guess

Vigilante: something like Live and let Die

Rogue? I guess, they are more into the money so maybe... Gimme Some Money?

Loyalist? probably some crazy mashup between Don't worry, Be Happy and Every Breath you take

Resistance? Something obvious like We're not goinna to take it or Another Brick in the Wall or maybe If you tolerate this your children will be next or maybe Close every door?

Otherwise, a crazy mix of anything, really. Mashups and weird stuff like Into Introspection, weird al, they might be giants, crazy songs about flying saucers, random German covers, songs with post modern lyrics, strangely upbeat emo kids theme songs, ending themes to japanese tv shows and stuff thats on the radio, too.

I concur, this wasn't so much a trailer, as a preview for comic con. as I recall, for Iron-Man, we originally got a more story centric preview, followed by a shorter, actual trailer.

In any case, if you have seen Frankenstein then you know that Branagh can do awesome superpowered stuff. I am soooo loooking forward to this movie
  14. Its a shame about Storyteller, since that really is a great little high quality series that just kinda disapeared. And also about Profit, since that was a show way ahead of its time. But still, if anyone was going to take out Jim profit, I'm glad it was Karl Kolchak.
  15. I still think that The Coming Storm isn't one thing. The Menders are ordered not to mention 'it' by its true name, nor talk about the details. They also seem to set you contradictory tasks in order to prevent it.

Either, The Storm is actually a combination of threats or... The Menders are being tricked into thinking that their own personal 'Event' is the Storm and that they are all working against one thing.
  16. I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next one. Very well done mix of the original characters in the modern world. They even use some dialogue verbatim from the original scripts.

The characters were all great. Holmes and Watson are fantastic, loved Mrs. Hudson ("I'm not your houskeeper"), Lestrade was great and I liked Gatiss' character once it was revealed to be who I hoped it was.

    SPOILERS

The badguy being a mix of Saw and the princess bride was interesting (and a good re-mix of the original culprit), but I think the overal mystery was the major flaw in this episode (and the real danger for the rest of the series). The audience shouldn't be that far ahead of Holmes.
  17. 1. Firefly
Tough call, since I really like American Gothic. But, having rewatched it recently, it did have some pretty weak episodes, so going with Firefly

    2. Profit
Kolchak is great, but the series really didn't build on the awesomeness of of the fils the way it should have and just became monster of the week (though had some truly great single episodes)

    3. Happy Town
Haven't seen happy town, but didn't like the fugitive

    4. Warehouse 13
    Warehouse 13 is pretty fun

    5. Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks is a classic for a reason

    6. Harper's Island
    I quite enjoyed HI.

    7. Jim Henson's The Storyteller
Terminator was a good show, but had its chance and didn't really go anywhere with it.

    8. Nowhere Man
    Had a nice premise
  18. 1. Space: Above and Beyond
    Almost picked this one myself

    2. Crusade
This is my pick, and one of the true great losses for Sci-Fi. It had sooo much potential.

    3. The Prisoner
No question for this one, its one of the greats.

    4. Eerie, Indiana
Very fun, very creepy kids show, with a great cast

    5. Misfits of Science
Have only ever seen the pilot of this one, but it was awesomly fun, and the electric rock n roll guy was one of my favourite characters as a kid.

    6. Threshold
Saw a few episodes and thought it was pretty fun.

    7. The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr
Great premise + weirdness + Bruce = teh win

    8. Harsh Realm!!
Didn't like Dollhouse that much, whereas Harsh Realm had a quite interesting idea.

Plenty of things, but the existance of this film will set many of them to rights!
  20. 1. Pushing Daisies
Daises was pretty fun,and haven't seen the other one

    2. The Honeymooners
Haven't seen either, but only one went onto be The Flintstones

    3. Archer
Archer is pretty funny, haven't seen the other.

    4. Police Squad!
Dead like me was good... but surely, you can't be serious?

    5. Clerks the Animated Series
Haven't seen either, but I'll assume Clerks is good.

    6. The Tick
    Spoon!

    7. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
This is mine, but even if it weren't I'd still want to vote for it 42 times.

    8. Freaks and Geeks
Haven't seen either, butI heard Freaks and Geeks was good.
  21. 1. Pirates of Dark Water

Mainly because I watched PoDW as a kid, but never really got into Trigun

    2. Invader Zim

Because its very funny and awesome

    3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

NGE was pretty good, whereas haven't seen the other one.

    4. Outlaw Star

Oooh, very tough choice here. Freakavoid is fantastic, but... Outlaw Star is probably one of my favourite Anime series, so going with that

    5. Dungeons & Dragons
Haven't seen the other but D&D was awesome and big part of my childhood

    6. Inhumanoids.
Inhumanoids had some great characters and was a lot of fun.

    7. Spider-Man: The New Animated Series aka MTV's Spider-Man
Didn't like Big Guy that much, whereas Spider-Man is Spider-Man.

    8. The Spectacular Spiderman
Haven't seen any CB (), so gonna go with Spidey again.
  22. bascially, use say 2-3 defence insps, 1 yellow and the rest red. dodge his silly schtick attack and you should take him before (or just after) they run out.

If money is really that tight, you might want to check out Freedom Force and its sequel. Its an offline Superhero game, which has some multiplayer modes and tons of fan made mods and content. Its quite old now, so most pcs should run it, and is available for a few $ from Steam.
