A random birthday present on your characters birthday per character is hardly a vet reward program.

[/ QUOTE ]its a reward only unlockable by playing for a pre-set period of time. thats a vet reward.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Heh you're really reaching there on that definition but if it makes you happy knock yourself out

The few mmorpgs that have vet reward programs pretty much call them vet reward programs and have many things that you obtain over time broken into small increments from 1 day to coh's 3 months per. The only thing GW gives you is a random pet on your character's creation date. There are no rewards per month, day, week, year of ownership to reward loyal customers, only the pets. Hardly a veteran reward system.

I played MUDs that didn't have vet rewards but they did have preferred membership where those that paid more each month got access to more in game. I'd rather have vet rewards.

Thanks, when I tested SWG years ago they didn't have such a thing

[/ QUOTE ]you know, i was surprised to find that that one mmo dosent have vet rewards, but apparently it causes some consternation on their forums even, but ultima online, tabula rasa, star wars galaxies, guild wars, and eq2 all have vet rewards. so yeah as i have been saying, it is a thing in the industry.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Guild Wars does not have vet rewards, Neither does UO last time I checked (which was a year ago) and I didn't see any mention of them in EQ2's website. Provide links to the vet programs for these please. I'd like to see what they're doing with them.

I've been playing Guild Wars since early-mid beta and have never seen any sort of vet reward program and seeing as you don't pay monthly fees this isn't surprising in the least.

[/ QUOTE ]guild wars gives you a mini pet every year on your anniversery, i got a necrid horseman, havent claimed my second year yet, hoping i get a factions-style dragon, though back when i played regularly i saw that undead dragons got mad cash. as for the rest, i see kyabasu and creole covered them, just do a yahoo search for veteran rewards, it will take you right there. funny thing is, i didnt know wow didnt have vet rewards, but the funny thin is, when I searched it, i found a bunch of threads on their boards complaining that they didnt, we got a mention in a few of them as an example of vet rewards, Woo. also i noticed we got the most hits for vet rewards, probably due to the number of distinct pages we have dedicated to them.

  3. As far as Stone Melee and Fire/Ice Melee. How about if we got some different weapon shapes that were not color-able so that the set powers still matched each other...no blue flaming sword and red-orange sword blasts.

Firey/Icy: Scimitars, Longswords, Fantasy Sword, Lightsaber-ish, Gladius, Kopesh would all be welcome to the players, perhaps even axe-ish type shape or two.

Stone Melee: More Granite looking hammers/fists, Cooling Lava-ish looking hammers/fists (cracks in the stone with lava showing through, slightly darker stone texture), Different hammer shapes with the current texture such as Mallets, Hercules Clubs (long club with spikes like in mace but bigger), Something kinda mace like (knobby orb on a stone shaft). If I recall the only attacks that have a primary effect on the body are the first three attacks. I don't remember seismic smash/tremor having one and footstomp types don't really need to be changed, nor do the stone particles that explode out when you hit someone.

I'm sure people would enjoy these no matter what.

Energy Melee: I'd be happy with color-able pompoms wouldn't need any splash effect colored to make me happy

I'll have to play around with the hoods... I'm not sure they're quite the look I'm going for, but we don't really have turbans. I'll give the other suggestions a try, too, but I may have to try the Sinbad look. Thanks for the help, but if anyone else can think of something, let me know!

If we can get Sexy J to watch some of the HBO ROME series, he will get all motivated and release IMMEDIATELY!

    [/ QUOTE ]

My hope is with issue 12 which I'm guessing will be on test in a week or two.
  7. What happened was this. Someone hacked some unreleased costumes and bits of npc's for player use and then posted a thread demanding why these were not available. Needless to say they were removed from the forum.

Later some GM powers accidentally slipped to test and people were able to see some outfits, such as the screenshot of backpacks that is roaming about, which I have somewhere. I have yet to see anyone running around with these costumes on test as I can't remember if test was rolled back due to the GM powers, I think it was.

Later SexyJay posted hints to some different costume sets, I was under the impression they would all be released before 2008 but that doesn't seem to be the case. People guessed at the letters and as far as I remember the only one that has not been released yet is the Roman set.

    Jester
    Boxing
    Exoproto
    Stealth
    Enforcer?
    Roman

    So now we wait
  8. well supposedly it's done. SexyJay mentioned 6 new sets of costumes for people and hinted at them with 2 letters and the only one we've not gotten yet is RO iirc and that's Roman
  9. You could always wait for THIS to be released.

I use this for my Roman based tanker

Justitania and will be switching to the above if and when we get it

Okay, so out of 8 pets, why are there only 2 different buffs?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Originally, there were 2 pets: The Faeries. Then someone (may even have been me, I don't remember) brought up the fact that Faeries won't match everyones concepts and so, the Wisps were born. Then, someone suggested the Drones for Tech types and at the last minute the Oscillators were tossed in. All told, a more classic example of Feature Creep you will never find!

So, since there were only two pets originally, there were only 2 powers made. I didn't have time to make 6 more powers to match the new entities.

As for why they are so fragile, let's just say if they were at all "tough" I could exploit them horrendously. So, they are fragile. They CAN be kept alive if you are a ranged AT, but melee types will have a hard time of it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'd much rather have 2 buffs spread across 8 pets that work for most every Origin / AT type then 8 different buffs potentially attached to a pet skin you don't like / want but is too good to pass up.

Cool thanks for the link. As I mentioned I didn't see it last time I was there and have not played UO since about half a year into it's inception due to all the issues it had...mainly the gankers (Cor Por ), which really sucked because I loved the other Ultima world adventures.

Chase, first impressions count for a lot. Unless you're actively opposed to having the mission doors for level 1 and 2 characters moved out of the red zones, I'm not sure what your point is. If you think things are fine the way they are now, just say so. I think moving a few of the mission doors would be a nice QoL feature for new players. If you disagree, so be it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

To be fair, my preferred solution would be revamp the whole leveling system to function more like it does with giant monsters & rikti. I'd like the game a whole lot more if the foes didn't grey out so fast and if some encounters always held some risk. Even wolverine found the occasional common thug a good brawling challenge on occasion...

Do that and there wouldn't be the huge difficulty difference in the redzones, just a reasonably more challenging one.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think I'd actually prefer this. They could just up the experience you get for mobs that have more powers / are tougher but still con the same color. Yellow Hellion is worth X, Yellow Carnie X+some so fighting the carnies is worth more, but then they're more dangerous then the Hellions.

Some of the SWG vet rewards were REALLY GOOD too. Back when being a weaponsmith was it's own skill, getting a big chunk of the best ore ever to spawn on your server was huge...

But I have to agree with the points on the early CoH game. When I think back to my experiences on my first hero (and I played with about 3 other friends, and thought that getting to the Frostfire mission was the only thing there was to do), and then compare them to how much simpler things are in CoV...

I could reiterate the list, but I would have to second the suggestion that new players should make villains. Even though most of my friends would want to make heroes first because they want to be 'heroic'.

Sure, there are things that individuals new to the game can do to be better, but the reality is that if people who would have continued to play CoH end up quitting due to frustration at low levels, it's really NCSoft who's losing out.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I completely agree. The earlier atlas/galaxy missions need to be reworked so they are more new player friendly, rather like CoV is. More people are attracted to playing heroes the villains, if judging by the different population on each side is any indication.

It's bad to drive away early players due to frustration. I can't tell you how many betas I've been in where the game design of the early levels was very frustrating and the developers answer was "tough thats how it is"...needless to say these games have not done well.

Sorry but that is unacceptable to just tell people to suck it up.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, "suck it up" is rather harsh-sounding, but the thought is valid.

Long-term customers are rewarded for their patronage. Common COMMON practice. Widely accepted and generally very popular with the customers. Does it make everyone happy? No, of course not. Nothing makes everyone happy.

    [/ QUOTE ]

CoX is the only game I know of that gives out veteran rewards in an mmorpg. I've played quite a few of these games for many many years, way back when UO first came out and up to now. I can't recall another vet reward program, but then I've not played every single mmorpg on the market by a long shot

Common practice in some businesses to reward customer loyalty in some way, yes. Common practice to entice new customers with perks that long time customers also get, yes. The crux is customer retention and attraction. After all you catch more flies with honey then vinegar.

Sorry but that is unacceptable to just tell people to suck it up. This solution keeps most of the general populace happy, gives the vets something slightly more special then everyone else, yet not enough for the regular playerbase, outside of people who can only whine, something to whine about. It also doesn't deter new players like the current system can do.

Appreciate the feedback / discussion though

[/ QUOTE ]well, yes and no, if new players are upset that they cant have something shiney like the vets have, then some of them will still be put off by the fact that vets have a better looking version of their item than they do. they still are going to have to "suck it up", and you now add the fact that if the vet version isnt sufficiently impressive, then you ticked a portion of the vets off too, because they feel they werent given their entitlement. and thats what the problem comes down to, an inflated sense of entitlement, some people, either through luck, higher skill, a bigger support network or simply more time will have more than other players, and some of those players will be jealous, nothing is going to fix that because the system itsself is bad, but because people have the natural inclination to want it all, now, and all the proposed ideas wont really fix that. you sometimes just have to acknowlege that some people are going to be unhappy because of their own unrealistic expetations, and do your best to keep those people happy that can be reasonably dealt with.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree the system itself is bad and remembering the old axiom "You can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time" then the best thing to do, as they're not going to remove the vet program any time soon, is to please as many people as possible in some way.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
I'd rather see the vet rewards eliminated than watered down. They're not that great to start with.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Except the original ones for the vets wouldn't be watered down. A lesser version is what becomes available to everyone. Vets still keep something special but with less whining and negative feelings from the rest of the playerbase.
  20. Sorry but that is unacceptable to just tell people to suck it up. 21. I've posted this before in other areas of the board and am posting it here because it seems fitting

    Vet Reward Solution

The vet rewards seem to really rub many people the wrong way and do discourage some new players and frustrate other mid-length players, especially in the costume department where specific ideas can't quite be realized until you've gotten said rewards. This is a visually appealing game and people put great stock into how their Characters look.

The Solution is to have a variation on every vet reward that is given to every player, with the fancier version being given to the vet.

<ul type="square">[*] 3 Month Trenchcoats: All Players Normal Tail / Vets get Split tail and Ragged Tail.[*] 6 Month Greek Alphabet: All Players lowercase / Vets get upper &amp; lowercase[*] 9 Month Belly Shirt &amp; Kilt: All players belly shirt &amp; formal kilt / Vets get an alternate pattern belly shirt &amp; formal/war kilt.[*] 12 Month Prestige Sprints / Melee weapon / Base Items: All Players 1 sprint, weaker axe/sands (3 hits for sands instead of 5 etc), 1 sci fi, magic, tech, enemy weapon display / Vets get all 4 sprints, full str attacks, all base items.[*] 15 Month Wings: All Players angelic &amp; demon wings / Vets get Alternate Pattern Angelic Wings &amp; Demon Wings (torn, spiky feathers, glow or fire on them, something slightly fancier)[*] 18 Month Samurai Armor: All Players 1 style of armor / Vets get all 3 styles.[*] 21 Month Shoulder Capes: All Players Should capes / Vets get some extra shoulder cape patterns.[*] 24 Month Base Transporter &amp; base posters: All Players base transporter &amp; 2 posters/ Vets get Base Transporter on faster refresh &amp; all posters &amp; titles.[*] 27 Month Anime Style Armor: All Players anime armor / Vets get anime armor &amp; fancier pattern anime armor.[*] 30 Month Signature Group Logos &amp; Signature Items: All Players 2 good 2 bad of each/ / Vets get All items.[*] 33 Month Ranged Weapon: All Players weaker &amp; smaller ranged items Nemesis Rod &amp; Blackwand wand. / Vets get Full powered version also.[*] 36 Month Non Combat Pet: All Players a specific pet (like cherub) / Vets get additional Choice of pets[*] 39 Month Boxing Outfit: All Players boxing outfit / Vets get Alternate pattern outfits + neck towel.[*] 42 Month Assemble the Team: All Players assemble team power longer recharge / Vets get same power faster recharge &amp; quicker activation.[*] 45 Month Respec: All Players freespec / Vets get respec &amp; costume tokens.[*] 48 Month Buff Pet: All Players a specific buff pet (target drones) / Vets get choice of 4 different types in addition to the target drone. Pets mutually exclusive can't have more then one out of any type of buff pet.[/list]
You basically give a basic version of the same thing to the playerbase and fancier versions for the vets with a few more perks but not total exclusivity to them. This lets the vets get something a bit fancier then the normal player but still lets the normal player get something too and not felt left out, then when they get to that time they get the fancier versions.
