    In theory, Tyrant can conquer a whole world by himself. He's Tyrant. He's invincible and insanely strong. Think Superman.

    Rikti are strong, but they aren't that strong. Their strength comes by swarming in force. Any given hero can handle numerous rikti at once. So to invade a strong world they'd need millions, even billions of rikti. So unless their teleporters are REALLY large, a ship that can land and let everyone off is the most cost-effective way.

    I've never seen it happen, ever. Not even once. Not even "that one time that stupid guy spent 30 minutes asking for a Stone Brute and all of his team quit." Not even for speedrun teams. Not when IOs were new, not during AE babies, not yesterday. Which server do you play on? Freedom? Virtue here.

    GR bit.

    Well considering Praetoria is in another dimension... The buildings all look different and have been explained to us as being built and designed that way for a reason... I'd say the odds are about 100% that we'll be getting new maps.

    Shadow Shard would be my first choice, as it's potentially 40-50 content. They could dial it back to 35-50 to match Cim and RWZ. It's also a big zone with a lot of unexplored lore (read the wiki sometime, there's a lot of stuff they talk about but isn't in the game), and something that would easy to be make into a co-op zone. Not only is it in an alternate dimension of its own, but villains do go there in a few missions.

    My second choice would be Croatoa. This would give villains 2 new GMs and a task force, which they desperately need. It could also be something like 20-35 for level, letting it bump right up against the existing co-op zones so that you can have a better range if you're running co-op content. It's also somewhat removed from Paragon City, and you could even have villainous missions where you work for the Red Caps.

    Sounds like a mix of my C and D. Not only do you get to pick your rewards, but over time the choices available would increase for lower-time veterans. Instead of a new reward only being available to someone who's played for 72 months, the new reward is tossed somewhere into the 6 or 12 month pool.

    So while someone who's played for 72 months would have more extra stuff than someone who's only played for 12, if a "new" vet reward, like say City Traveler or the inspiration bonus, comes out, someone can get that as their 12 month reward and not have to wait another 5 years.

    A lot of games do have this sort of thing. One of my past games, Ragnarok Online, was really bad about this. Your build was a small part of what you could do, but builds were pretty much all cookie-cutter in nature. Past that, your gear was a HUGE impact on your performance. And it would all be low droprate stuff that costs millions and millions. There were even god items that only a small handful of people on the entire server would have. And of course WoW is all about grinding raids so you can get random drops.

    CoH of course is not about that. We got along with just SOs forever. Now that we have IOs, people can shore up their weaknesses or exploit their strengths to the point that they're really cool -- but they don't have to. Of my 26 toons or so, I only have about three that I bothered to start getting a bunch of IOs for.

    When I got my first few 50s, I felt this way too. Every 50 I saw who wasn't me would have a huge page of buffs and I'd always consider them way better than me and wonder why I didn't have those. Over time I've drifted from that mindset. I don't need IOs unless I'm going to be PvPing (which I don't do), farming (which I only do on two toons), or doing some crazy stuff like RWZ Challenge or soloing AVs (which I've yet to do). I have one toon that has several hundred million on her just because she has all her IOs and now I don't have anything to spend the money on.

    Quote:
    I even told her I'd be happy to start up any TF she wanted, invite good and friendly players and would gladly take her Rad defender. She demurred stating that she'd feel terrible if she "dragged down" the team, and that she'd only join once she was convinced that she could pull her own weight.
    Speaking as someone who used to do 2+ TFs per day, even of a speedrun nature, I never stopped to look at anyone's set bonuses. Once you start running a team of 8 and stacking up buffs and debuffs, it really doesn't matter if the Blaster is soft-capped to range or if the Rad Defender can heal 25% more often. I'd care more about inviting a Rad Defender because I wanted Rad Debuffs. I care a whole heck of a lot more about inviting someone for their AT and sometimes sets than I do about their IOs.

    Besides, set bonuses don't tell me anything anyway. All I see is a giant wall of text telling me about how many bonuses someone has. I can't easily discern what kind of bonuses they have, or even if they're useful. One of my toons has a decent paragraph but she's frankenslotted so it's mostly the lame 2-3 slot bonuses like +2.2% resist to immobilize or some other dumb stuff. Then my main IOed out toon (widow) has a gigantic page of bonuses, but looking at her you can't tell anything about what I built for or why. Maybe I built her for +accuracy and -debt because I hate to miss and die. You don't know.

    So basically, if I invite a Blaster I know he's going to blast. There's a 100% (okay maybe like 99.99% in case I run into Poolman or something) chance he's going to be attacking and doing damage. If I look at his powers, I know what powers he has and will be using. I have a pretty good idea from that what he's going to be contributing. Let's say 80% because tactics vary and someone might have BU but not know how to use it very well or just forget to. Then if I look at their set bonuses, I have maybe a 10% understanding of what that's contributing to them and the team. I don't even know that it's contributing anything at all.

    So today, she contacted me and asked me how to farm with her new level 50 and asked me for tips on how to leverage the market to get influence quickly. She told me that she had started an electric/shield scrapper, not because she enjoyed playing scrappers, but because they were good farmers. Somehow, this left me a little sad.
    Well, if she finds it fun and wants to do it, she can. Some people enjoy farming and getting IOs and shooting for the next best thing. I don't mind some farming occasionally, and I've thrown IOs at some toons. But if she's doing it because she feels she has to, she's doing it wrong! Though anything she does because she finds it fun, that's just fine.
  14. Incidentally, from the title alone I thought this was going to be about things like "We don't have any melee attacks that do -RES as a secondary effect." I was thinking about power combinations that we don't currently have on things. And I don't just mean single powers in a set like Stunning Shot or Tenebrous Tentacles, I mean like how every Radiation power does -DEF. So here are some we lack:

    Melee attacks:
    * -RES

    Ranged attacks:
    * Sleep
    * Stun

    We also don't have any attacks with the standard secondary effect of:
    * Hold
    * Fear
    * Confuse
    * Immobilize
    * -DMG
    * -Accuracy (-ToHit only)
    * -Range
    * -Max HP
    * -Regen (okay we do but they're rare; mostly just widows)

    So in summary, we need:
    * Sonic Melee
    * A ranged blast set that stuns
    * An attack set that causes random, short-duration confuses
    * An attack set that reduces the damage of enemies hit
    * A set that can debuff range with a rapid enough attack chain

    I for one want psi melee that fears and confuses enemies left and right.

    Dodgeball with our current "hit is determined at time of cast" system would be really amusing. Someone with superspeed running across the city, leaping over a wall, and hiding behind a building would still be pegged with a heat-seeking ball and have to sit out.

    As long as people still get character slots, respecs, and costume tokens it can't be all bad. I don't even have an issue with free merits, or heck other free consumables like inspirations or something. What I don't like is the powers and other advantages like City Traveler that separates new players from veterans. I still have a bit over 3 months to go for my team recall, which I've been wanting ever since I started doing serious TFs like a year ago.

    Really, if I had designed the system, I would've done one of a few things:

    A) Rewards stop at 5 years. Everyone gets 5 years worth of rewards to work toward and then it ends.
    B) Rewards taper off after a certain point (5 years max) and just enter a cycle where you get the basics like costume and character slot tokens, but nothing new like powers.
    C) Frontload and update older rewards, so that new players hit good rewards faster. Over time, continually add new bonuses to the first 12 months or so. Like instead of making the +10% bonus on inspirations the 72 month reward, add it to the 12 month reward.
    D) Let people pick rewards when they hit milestones, so people who care about team recall but don't care about the useless pet can get things they want when they want.

    The problem being is that corpses tend to fade out relatively quickly. Plus it would be that by the time your power effects come into play, you don't need them: they're already dead. Also, what happens when you come up against a single hard foe (GM/EB/AV/Some Bosses)? With no corpses to fuel yourself, you're at a disadvantage.
    Actually, Guild Wars does a pretty good job with corpse exploitation skills. That's one of the only things I miss from that game. However, due to the cast times and the one-use-per-corpse rule, it would sometimes be exceedingly frustrating. For instance, if you're playing a toon that relies on exploiting corpses so that you can make zombie minions, but are fighting enemies that blow them up, there's a 0% chance that you'll get to use the corpses before they do.

    Of course, there are a lot of ways to avoid that. For one, allow corpses to be used by anyone and everyone, even multiple times. Just balance out the recharge times so you can't do it to one corpse over and over.

    Anyway, some good ones in GW:

    * Animate (blank) - There are a handful of zombie summon powers that work through exploiting corpses. You can summon little amalgamations of flesh and bone to make a temporary pet. Used to be you could keep as many pets going as you were able to (normal players, around 20, though with some superbuilds you could have virtually infinite), but it's now limited to 10.

    * Putrid Explosion - The corpse explodes and does damage, much like Fallout. You could make a far weaker version that works on enemy corpses. While you would be partially right about how it only works after you already killed something, think of all the times you killed some minions and there were still plenty of enemies left.

    * Soul Feast - Heal yourself, kinda like Stygian Circle. Potentially could be like a powerful Siphon Life, only off corpses. The downside of course would be that you can't use it in extended fights.

    * Well of (blank) - A targeted ground effect appears which effects all foes or allies in the area for a while. Some examples are Well of Blood which causes +regen in an area, or Well of Darkness which makes it harder for foes to attack. This could be an effect that has a reasonable refire rate so that you can usually have it around, provided there are corpses. Of course, like before, it may not be available for extended fights. However, if you're fighting an AV, there's always going to be extra guys around beforehand, and once THEY fall you get at least one duration's length of the boost.

    I was glad to see the new bonuses this time around. They're small enough that they're still "a nice bonus" without being something that I look forward to with a frustrated angry-face for the next two and a half years. I hope they remain this way and not go back to being as powerful/desirable as things like City Traveler.

    Yup, this is very likely. Of course, I hope they do this with hair too and give us animated hair. You couldn't have animated hair with wings, cape, or animated tails, but you could at least have them sometimes.
