If you ask me, anyone who has spent that much time and energy on ONE character deserves to have an advantage when playing that character. The balancing point here is that purple sets and PvP sets are EXTREMELY hard to come by (by any allowed means anyway). Since they are so difficult to acquire, it follows that not everyone has them. True, those who DO have them have an advantage, but they went to a lot of effort to get them.
Even without the scale-down ability, there are inherent advantages to purple and PvP sets. Even if all sets allowed their bonuses at all levels, people would still strive for PvP and purple sets because of the other advantages they offer.

I think all sets should scale down, if for no other reason than we have far too many rules that aren't explained anywhere in the game that people are still supposed to know. Which becomes a deterrent for some new players. And it becomes complicated trying to explain the various ways that IOs will and won't work (like how procs work at all levels but sets don't).

It would probably highlight all the low-level useless sets though. Even though I feel that's a good thing since it could lead to those sets being improved instead of just being piles of junk like they are now.

As far as PvP balance goes, we already have PvP IOs, purple sets, and HOs interfering with low level zones. But now we have the SSK system where someone in a level 20 PvP zone would have powers up to level 24. I don't think anything at this point would make the PvP system any better or balanced than it is. Low level zones are already just an exercise in legitimate in-range toons being ganked by well-prepared high level toons. Undoing the scaling on purples and PvP sets wouldn't change that. It's a mistake with the zones themselves, not the enhancements.
  3. I'll be making:

DP/Traps Corruptor, named Riley Tiranis (already reserved name and outfit). To play in a 4-person group with my friends. It's going to be 2x DP/Traps and 2x DP/Devices. Four blasty types with lots of DEF and guns with pets and explosions. It should be a rioting good time.

DP/MM Blaster, name unknown. She's going to be a psychic gunslinger, and someone for me to play DP with when my friends for the other toon above aren't around. I also wanted to have something to play MM with since I have only done it with Psi primary and that sucked. Should be AoE heavy and fairly survivable.

DS/?? MM. I'm thinking either Pain or Dark, even though I already did Dark a lot. I don't want to do Thermal because I have a high level Thermal and I hate buffbotting. I've never done Pain to a high level though so I want to give that a shot. Though it depends some on what the pets are like.

You can group with other people, you just have to be invited to their team and not the other way around.

Unfortunately, trial accounts are very limited on what they can do because of problems we've had in the past with people abusing them. There are however still ways you can team with people.

    1) Pull up your chat window (C) and click "team." You'll see a box here that says "You are not looking for a group" and a search comment below. Change the dropdown box to "Looking for any," which is a white circle. In your search comment, put something along the lines of "Trial account, please blind invite," or "Invite me, I'm on a trial account."

    2) You have access to the help channel. Although a lot of people don't use this channel, you may get lucky this way. On your chat window (C) press the tab labeled help at the top. You can then type in the channel by typing /hc. For instance, "/hc Hello, I'm on a trial account and I'd like an invite to a team if anyone can oblige," or "/hc Can anyone invite me to a team? I'm on a trial account and I can't form my own." You may have to switch tabs between Global and Help to pick up other communications.

    3) You can still chat in local, so you may be able to find some people in places like Atlas Park, around the Wentworth's buildings, or in Architect Entertainment buildings (the latter two can be found on the map, by pressing M). You can approach some players and type in local to let them know you're looking for a team, and are on a trial account. You may also just ask if someone can help you find a team because you can't chat using broadcast or tells. You may find some helpful players willing to find a team for you.

Hopefully those will help. I know it can be annoying to not be able to chat using the normal channels. But good luck to you!

I'm trying to figure out if that's a clever way of saying the set is good for people who want more of a challenge, which also means it's fine how it is because it's supposed to suck.

Yup, I didn't factor in recharge times, so even those values are higher than they probably ought to be.

  11. AI can use up a lot of server effort having to calculate intelligent reactions for all those units. Imagine the ITF lag if all the enemies were processing AI reactions.

Also, GW had "intelligent" AI but really it was just annoying/frustrating as hell. I think our AI is fine as it is.

Oh I know he USED to do nice stuff. But I'm speaking currently. He left us to make a rival game while claiming our playerbase is blind and that the game (which he made) sucks. He's definitely worthless NOW.

Quite the opposite actually. Especially when it's as broad-reaching as claiming ALL of the devs are worthless. If you really believe that, there's an exit stage left. I trust you can find it.

Naw, let's give them the benefit of the doubt and run GR on its own server. You know, GR, the expansion that requires CoH to run, while CoH is on another server. It's foolproof! d->

Resistance would still be not as good, because defense also provides mezz and debuff avoidance; but if it were possible to go from 0 to 50% resistance on set bonuses alone, you might want to give that a try.
Ideally they'd want to double the power of RES bonuses to make them about equal to DEF ones. But the problem is it's exceptionally hard to even build RES bonuses. Even if you did double it, you'd have to go out of your way to slot really obscure things just to get like 5% RES to one damage type. Whereas with DEF you can take lots of fairly common and useful sets and get 30% or more to most incoming damage. So it's a mix of the values being too low, and nearly inaccessible through normal sets.
  20. Of course Ninja Run is killing travel powers. It sneaks up on those old, visually uninteresting travels and stabs them in the back before speeding away into the shadows! Let's see super speed do that!
  21. I'm offering the OP freebie +rep so that he may learn from this experience and take care when making posts in the future. After all, we were all new once.

But after today I break out the -rep viciously! So don't let it go to waste!

I agree that an example of one slightly unpredictable thing is proof that all possible things will happen. Because we got NR, we'll also get Clown Summoning, and the devs will ship fruit baskets to people who subscribe for over 3 months. Also the team will work to make a real-life Kronos Titan to rampage through the streets of New York for that authentic game experience. Don't believe that will happen? But we got Ninja Run! vv

This pretty much sums up my feelings. I don't mind not buffing someone after they've asked me not to, but expecting other people to just "know" not to buff you, and yelling at them if they do, is just unreasonable. It's a team-oriented game where you play with other players. If you don't like that, there are plenty of other places you can be, in-game and out, where you don't have to deal with getting 4 minutes of buff sometimes to interfere with your 5 hours of playtime.

    LOL just LOL.
Are you saying purples would be overpowered if we didn't have ED? Because unless I'm missing something, you'd only have around 145% damage using a purple without ED. Why do that when you could use standard IOs and get 212% (in 5 slots)? Especially since you'd be able to permahasten again without effort and not need huge recharge bonuses and stuff either.
  25. Here's the post I made in another identical thread!

Pretty much any class can work as a mage if you use the right powers. But in my opinion, a mage is a squishy type person who uses abilities from far away (or can but doesn't always) and has a variety of spells to use. So I'd recommend:

    1) Dominator - Doms do pretty high damage; some of the best in the game actually. But they're really squishy and easy to kill if they don't handle their control. Their sets are control/assault, which means their primary is devoted to mezzes and control while their secondary is a mix of melee and ranged attacks. They're redside (villains) and almost always have pets.

    2) Controller - Controllers do very little damage until high levels, but they do have all sorts of neat abilities. You can play Controller as a sort of support mage who exists to help out friends rather than directly destroy things. Controllers are blueside (heroes) and have control/buff, meaning their primary job is to control enemies by locking them down and preventing them from attacking, and their secondary role is to buff and debuff to support a team and themselves. Controllers almost always have pets.

    3) Defender/Corruptor - These two are a lot alike. Defenders are blueside, Corruptors redside. Both have ranged attacks and buffs/debuffs, just Defenders are more buff/debuff oriented and Corruptors are more damage oriented. You get blast attacks with some secondary debuff effects built in as well as a set of buffs and debuffs to support your friends and teammates.

    4) Blaster - Blueside toon. Blasters are pure damage. They have ranged and melee attacks, as well as some self-buff powers. Blasters are pretty much the best flat-out damage dealers in the game and tend to get a variety of different attack types. Blasters will often also have debuffs and other secondary effects in their powers, and some even have other special abilities like Sonic's mass sleep or Ice's ice patch. As a mage, Blasters are much more straight-forward and mostly focused on dealing damage with less emphasis on the side-stuff that the others listed above have.

Hopefully some of that helps. And welcome to the game!
