I remember why FA and other attacks and taunt have target caps.

    [/ QUOTE ]
What I got from this thread was they wanted FA's target cap to be 16, not unlimited.

You don't get recipes or common invention salvage. This becomes an issue at around level 32, when simple IOs become as good as even level SOs. It's fairly easy to keep your SOs updated with tickets, but you won't be replacing them with simple IOs, and thus spend money or tickets on their upkeep longer.

You are not getting badge missions or defeat badges in MA. This puts important accolades like Atlas Medallion harder to achieve. I recommend that you take time out around 23-28 to run the Moonfire task force a couple times, which usually helps a lot in getting your Slayer and Silver Bullet badges.

I think I've gotten maybe two accolades on two of my characters in all my years playing this game.

    Accolades aren't all that.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Maybe you should get more. +20% HP or temporary +RES/DEF powers are really great and very useful. +20% HP helps way more than most people realize.

One of the reasons I stick to redside is that Portal Jockey, Task Force Commander, and Eye of the Magus are so annoying to obtain.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Inventions pretty much do the same thing in terms of performance.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Yes, they do. Get as many +HP and +DEF inventions as you like, until you're totally maxed out and can't get any more. Now add ANOTHER +20% HP ON TOP of that, plus a click for +30% RES to all damage types.

I've been called 'Fun Police' 'XP Nazis' and 'Kontent Korps' for trying to point out that powerlevelling isn't the way the game was meant to be played. Don't think that the pro-farming side is any less self-righteous.

That said, ALL enemies in the game -- thorns, council, hellions, freakshow, doesn't matter -- all of them have a ranged attack of some kind.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Specifically, all units who are "melee oriented" have at least one ranged attack but its damage scale is always minor or moderate. Trolls pull out pistols, Freaks throw saws. They don't pull out weapons that do more damage than tier 9s and are capable of killing squishies in just a couple hits. They aren't HELPLESS from range, but they're limited mostly to minor-moderate damage.

It's entirely possible that the devs looked at our options and thought about how normal groups tend to have both ranged and melee units and realized that we could make groups that are ALL melee, thus making easier enemies than usual, even if they have a mandatory ranged attack. And for that reason made them do really high damage. But that's really the wrong approach. There are all-melee gangs like Trolls and Warriors that don't have to do outrageous damage from range to remain a challenge.

It's a problem when the custom units' mandatory ranged attacks do high-extreme damage.
  10. 5th Weekly Redside CC Results:

Very large turnout tonight. I can never tell if it gets bigger each time or what, but we had a lot.

    Lots of peeps.

Lithium Haze (Black Helix, @The Godchild) helped judge again today. We had a lot of nice and cooperative people. They formed two rows by themselves, and were pretty patient about waiting on everything. Took us a while to judge. We started with male winners this time.

    PRIZES:
First: 10m (one male, one female)
    Second: 5m
    Third: 2.5m
Runner up: 1m (two of each)

    Male runner ups:
    Stitch'
    Daddy Lars

    Third place:
    Void Machinist

    Second place:
    New Amendment

    First place:
    Ubermensch Prime

    Female runner ups:
    Snow Quartz
    Ky'lee

    Third place:
    Recently Deceased - Level 3!

    Second place:
    E Bathory

    First place:
    Green Hawk

We had 11m in donations this week, which is a good run. Abyss Empire (who didn't manage to get us this week) will probably be sponsoring next week. Hopefully we'll get some good donations. I have enough money to fund the next 4 CCs at the current prize amounts, but if it starts to dip down I may have to lower prizes. So now is a good time to remind everyone that if you'd like to donate as an individual or on behalf of a VG in order to get publicity and recruit, contact me here or in-game at @Dispari. Next week will be sponsored by the Coalition of Destruction courtesy of Dr. Matthew Ryan.

Next week's CC is for now planned for 9:00 PM CST on Saturday the 23rd. If plans change I'll announce them here.
  11. You should try a widow. Claw speed with bonus DoT = NICE!
  12. As a reminder, CC starts in an hour and a half. Redside, on steps of Cap au Diable university. Prizes for both male and female costumes. First prize is looks like will be 10m for both.

Take, for instance, you have 200 glasses of water and they're supposed to be equal at 50% capacity. One of the glasses is a little over, at about 60%. Does it make more sense to just pour some out, or to add more water to every single other glass? And if you're taking the no-pour approach, what happens when you accidentally overfill one to 65%?

    [ QUOTE ]
I dream of a nerfless game, where when one set outperforms the others, instead of slightly reducing the power of that set, you simply buff EVERY OTHER SET. Then when you introduce a new set (Willpower) that turns out to be stronger, you simply buff FIFTEEN OTHER SETS. And you keep doing this until all sets are capable of soloing Hamidon, and you have to adjust the power of every single enemy in the entire game just so that they can keep up, and we end up with enemies that deal damage in the thousands with regular hits just so all the numbers balance out.

That would be way better than having to suffer "nerfs" !!!

[/ QUOTE ]i hate to have to ask this, but this is an mmo forum, so...this was intentionally ironic, right?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Yes, it was completely sarcastic. It's totally unreasonable to expect a game to never nerf anything. The alternatives would be to A) have things that are clearly overpowered that you can't do anything about, or B) continually buff EVERYTHING except the overpowered stuff which would take a thousand times more work and effort.

For both players and NPCs, the game actually forces an attack to auto-hit occasionally. That means true 95% damage mitigation isn't really possible

    [/ QUOTE ]
Yes it is. Streakbreaker isn't just random, it has a system.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thank you for pointing me to that nice little article. After a couple years absence and being lured back only by Architect, I had been having a really hard time finding some of my old data sources. It definitely looks like I don't have to worry about the actual Streakbreaker code. Just the soft and hard caps. So 90% damage mitigation from defense alone is at least possible. (5% low-end capped to-hit * up to 1.5 accuracy mod for purple targets * 1.3 accuracy for boss types = 9.75% to hit. Or maybe just 9% if those accuracy mods add instead of multiply.)

That's not quite convincing me to drop Radiant Aura from my build just yet, though. Getting that level of defense is going to be tricky for anybody but a force-field defender, multiple defenders, or a defender buffing a tanker or scrapper (or substitute corrupter, mastermind, controller, or brute as appropriate if you prefer.) Even then, having 1 out of 10 attacks hit can still hurt.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I wouldn't drop Radiant Aura, or any heal for that matter.

Heals, as I see them, are the last line of defense. They're the last resort. Relying on them as the primary means of mitigation is a really bad idea. They aren't designed for that. They have long recharges (compared to other games where they recharge in 1-2 seconds).

The most DEF can do for you is 95%. The most RES can do for you is 90% (though usually more like 75%). Both of those can and will fail occasionally. Buffs drop, people wander too far, Unstoppable crashes, AV hits a squishy. That's when heals patch you up.

I like having some heals on the team. I don't like having to rely on the heals as a primary means of mitigation, though. A team can run with nice buffs/debuffs and no heals. It's just a little smoother if there's a heal or two.

    Is there no middleground anymore?

    [/ QUOTE ]
there's plenty of middle ground, although none of it resides under the feet of the person I was addressing.

    [/ QUOTE ]
...you say as you accuse them of being a mindless conformist and only following rules for the sake of following rules.
  18. Well, it's "balanced" in a way (meaning all ATs basically do the same thing which is "do damage"), but it's also exceedingly complicated. Everything works way different in PvP than it does in PvE, even the way powers work and the roles of ATs. It's like an entirely different game.

that sounds infinitely more entertaining than your brand of conformity, preaching the "right" way to play from your soapbox and mindlessly following Daddy's rules because, uh, well, he's DADDY.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Is there no middleground anymore? Either nobody should powerlevel for any reason no matter what, or all bets should be off and everyone should have the ability to powerlevel so hard that someone who just installed the game can go from 1-50 in 30 minutes by accident? All people who follow rules are mindless sheep and doing so just because they're conformists? And the only alternative is to be a rebel who disobeys all rules because it's cool and those people in charge don't know what they're doing anyway?

    Yeesh.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
This is only a problem with all-boss farms featuring dual-blades custom mobs, imo.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Um, no it isn't. In addition to all bosses now having tier 9s on standard difficulty and being capable of doing 950 damage with a single attack, they now also have ranged attacks that in some cases do MORE damage than the insanely powerful tier 9s they're forced to have. If the completely outrageous damage MA bosses do isn't enough, some of the ranged power choices are limiting and out of character for the units people have made and cause frustrations of that nature.

The only people who think the Forum Cartel is important is... themselves.

    [/ QUOTE ]
That's not true. People use it as an excuse to invalidate other people's opinions all the time.

During i14 open beta we had lots of discussions on Dev's Choice. We had people throwing around the idea that people with a lot of forum exposure were basically guaranteed a DC slot. I made a post showing that only a small percentage, like about 9%, of the DCed arcs are by really well-known forumgoers, and that there were other big name people who didn't have DCed arcs.

Someone else made a similar post but expanded the concept of "forum cartel" to anyone with more than 1000 posts (basically, anyone with anything but the default forum title), which of course engulfed a good percentage of the users with DCed arcs. Other people jumped on that to say "See?! Forum cartel owns DC!"

Apparently I was cartel all along and didn't know it.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Yes it is. Streakbreaker isn't just random, it has a system. If you have 95% hit rate on something you can't miss more than once. But if you have 5% hit rate on something, you'd have to miss literally a hundred times before streakbreaker picks up and forces a hit -- at which point they're actually doing BETTER than 95% mitigation because 95% would mean every 20 attacks lands.

Streakbreaker only interferes in really abnormal situations, like when you have 95% hit rate on something but dice hate you and you'd miss 3 times in a row. Normally that kind of stuff is really obnoxious and annoying. Thus, streakbreaker.
