Make no mistake, most people know what their doing and know how to play their characters, but...it just feels much different than Heroside, more loose, more seat of the pants kinda play usually. Quite fun.

Blue: Recruit Fender and all follow Tank interspersed with the rare "hey, let me try something" or "hey guys watch this!".
You know, I play both sides of the fence, and I've seen both behaviors on both sides. Usually when I form redside teams they go pretty smooth. I tend to get one or two Brutes (often, I'm one of the Brutes), 2-4 Corrs, some Doms, and whatnot. As long as the Brutes are intelligent and the Corrs are supporting, there's no crazy nonsense and miscommunication. A good Brute, especially with Corrs backing them, can lead as well as a Tank can.

On the other hand, I've also been on teams blueside where the Tank keeps doing stupid things and getting himself or other people killed. Or there is no Tank. Or heck, maybe there is a Tank but people don't feel the need to follow him.

All because (generalizing again) Heroes = specialists, Villains = generalists.
Usually what I see when I look at ATs is that heroes only do one thing, but do it really well. Villains tend to do more than one thing, and do it good enough. That's basically what you said.

But the thing that draws me to red ATs more is that every red AT deals good damage. Every red AT is designed with damage in mind, and every red AT added to a team is a damage dealer. Only two blue ATs are made with damage in mind.

That being said, my favorite ATs to have on a team are Brutes, Scrappers, Blasters, Controllers, Corruptors, and Dominators.

    Quote:
Brutes especially, I predict, will get a bad rep from some people who don't realize WHY they are in such a hurry. Stalkers...people will be mindlessly following the guy and get mashed by a huge mob (done that myself once, sad to say), MMs will get yelled at (as usual) for blocking doorways and aggroing other spawns too probably.
That may be a fair comparison of what BLUESIDE people will be thinking of the REDSIDE people when they come over. But from the other perspective:

Scrappers will be questioned because who needs a Scrapper when you have a Brute, amirite? Same goes for Tanks. Brute does both jobs, tanking and damage dealing. Don't need those silly blue ATs, eh?

No need for Defenders. We've been doing fine with Corruptors for ages, so there's no need to reduce our damage out put to add in someone who buffs better.

What's a Blaster for? All they do is damage. Hey man, every AT we have already does that. Learn to do other stuff too, newb!

In a nutshell, blueside people will wonder what's up with those redsiders, and redside people will wonder what's up with those bluesiders. Lots of us have already interacted in RWZ, Cim, and Pocket D. This will mesh things together more and give us more of a chance to see what ATs are the nicest to have on a team, and which ones just aren't needed.

I'm excited for the AT-combining stuff. I want to start building teams that have Controllers, Corruptors, Brutes, Scrappers, Doms, and Blasters. I won't turn down the other ATs of course, but those are my favorites and I enjoy watching them work together.

That does sound particularly useless. Even moreso than SD. If you can't move at all AND it's interruptable with a long cast time, what could you possibly use it for?

Interestingly enough, me neither. I won't be "side-switching" my characters because it makes sense for them to side-switch. Rather, I'll be moving them to where I think they should've been all along. It's not really side-switching, but placing them where their original concept has them.

I even have an MM I want to take and do villain -> rogue -> hero -> vigilante just so she'll be the "guyguy who will do whatever it takes to survive and get by" type of character she was upon creation.

Also, that's a one-time thing. It would be awfully abusive to "force" players to respec every time they switched sides. With some work with arcs, that's unlimited respecs. The only way to prevent abuse would be to limit side-switching (which is a bad idea), or not force respecs (which defeats the purpose).

(I don't know if newer MMO's have that or not, but it's on my list of Pointless Stupid MMO Irritations.)

Croatoa storyline has two "defend/survive" missions - "prevent 30 Red Caps from escaping" and ... whatever it's called, where you rescue the mystics and then hold the hill for 15 minutes against waves of oncoming redcaps. The first one is one of the most hated missions in the game while the second is actually quite popular (at least, among the small group of people I know.)

I'm not quite sure about the "archers on the roof" - everything in this game is designed to be accessible to melee characters with no specific travel power, or almost everything. I mean, do the Longbow patrols around ships in CoV count? Teleporting Gunslingers? Snipers in Founders?
There ARE a few of the elements I noted in the game, but they're few and far between. There's the Croatoa mission where you have to defend the hill. There's also the "defend the reactor" which we all know to be slow and repetitive.

We also occasionally get gadgets to use. Ostres Rifle for Liberty or other clicky type powers. The latest Reichsman TF has a few things to fiddle with.

Generally though, in addition to being ultra-rare, they're usually sloppily implemented. No offense to our devs. But the waves in the reactor have been putting people to sleep for ages, and we rarely get any good objects to interact with.

From GW, the ascention mission Prophecy-side where you have to hold down a fort while waves of enemies swarm in. And you get large crossbow weapons to destroy some groups if you have people manning them. GW also sometimes has you carry heavy objects from one location to another. You can put them down whenever, but carrying them makes you unable to use abilities. And they have places with archers, although it's always possible to reach them (even if not immediately). And things like opening/closing gates, or blowing up walls. I recall a mission where you have to carry powder kegs to locations to open up new areas. And a mission escorting giant turtles across a battlefield and trying to keep a certain number alive. Those types of elements are more interesting and fun than the basic mix of my "classic 3" above.

On the other hand, GW is more heavily based on the succeed/fail concept than CoH is. In CoH, most missions are unfailable, and those that are rarely hold significant consequences. In CoH a teamwipe just means you jog back and try again, while in GW it can often mean game over. So that's one heavy consideration when trying to implement new concepts like protecting an object or escorting killable hostages.
  8. My thoughts on power pool customization:

There are only ten pools, with four powers each. Some of those are autos or have pretty minimal FX. But overall it's not much different than 3-4 sets. Now, 3-4 sets doesn't sound like a lot of work and by appearances could've been something they did at launch of PC. But...

Power Pools, unlike regular sets, appear way more often and can be used by everyone. Even something as common as Fire Control or Willpower is only used by 2-4 ATs at best. Hasten, Flight, and Aid Self are usable by everyone. While it's no big deal to add color tint to Energy Melee and call it a day, I doubt most people would be happy if the only thing done to Hasten is a color swap.

I expect the devs to pull a rabbit out of the hat and give us a lot more customization options for pools than they did for regular sets. I see epics getting the same kind of treatment that regular sets got, but I expect/hope that they'll look into giving us alternate animations and graphics for various power pool powers such as Hasten, Super Speed, Teleport, Tough/Weave, Aid Other/Aid Self, and some other options. The devs should be able to pick up on what powers are taken the most and devote some extra time to those. I doubt they need to worry about providing a dozen different options for Invoke Panic, but Hasten would probably be at the top of their list.
  9. WoW's outdoor glowies are one thing I kind of like. Really though it'd just be like putting the glowies we have... outdoors! Really, I think what I want to see is more stuff that happens outside of instanced missions. More raids and zone events would be spiffy. But the important thing is to make it be things that people can't interfere with, screw up, and ruin. So far that hasn't happened, but adding rare enemies with rare drops and things would cause problems. I think our staff is smart enough to avoid that though.

I think of the MMOs I've played, Guild Wars has the most interesting missions. Most MMOs have the classic 3:
    1) Kill X number of enemies (including to get X number of drops)
    2) Find X number of objects
    3) Talk to so-and-so

Guild Wars has cooler stuff though. You get environmental effects, interactable objects, and more interesting defend/survive scenarios that CoH really just doesn't have. There's never a turret you can fire, or doors you can shut. There's never archers on the roof you have to take down, or a point you have to hold against invasions. And you only get very occasional environment effects like lava or Circle crystals. I'd love to see a whole lot more of stuff like that.

Is there a way to view older rep? I had some other good ones before.

Pretty much all my negative rep (which I don't have much of) is uncommented. When I leave stuff with someone I sign it as "-Dispari" as a courtesy. The one that actually left a message mistook my admittedly not-that-hilarious joking comment as a derail somehow. Even the person I quoted played along so I'm not sure how the repper found malacious derailing between the lines.

Most of my positive rep is from joke posts or larger, analytical ones. Though I haven't had as much forum presence lately so I haven't gotten as much rep.

I'm not saying that nobody in the game does any of those things on the list. In fact I'm saying there ARE people that do ALL those things on the list, but the percent is so small that it's not worth doomsaying about and saying we shouldn't implement X because that's all anyone will do anymore.

Of course, if there were drones there, people would stop gathering there.

Yes, all of those happened for a brief time while people tested out the new shiny, just like they did with everything else which wasn't mentioned as the next thing that's supposed to take over the game. No, people didn't continue to do it and life returned to normal.

Yes, people would try out and play with motorcycles when it's new, just like they'll play with Dual Pistols (OMG City of Equilibrium) and Demon Summoning when it comes out. No, not everyone will stay that way and once the shiny aspect has passed and they've gotten bored, 95% of them will resume their normal activities.

Yes, someone brings up this argument with every possible change that could ever be made or considered in the game. No, it never has been and never will be a valid excuse for not implementing something.

I don't remember many people saying that we'd never get side-switching or power customization. Unlike "total respec/reroll" which people are quite certain will never happen. There may have been a lot of people saying it'll be "a long time" or be "a lot of work" to get side-switching and power customization. It wouldn't be a lot of work (standard code rant here) to do a total respec, but it would cause a ton of other issues and invalidate a big portion of the game. We'll never get it. Not for technical reasons, but because it's a bad idea.

    True.

Non-patron epics for all! We can fill in patron-epics somewhere later down the line. But non-patron epics are universal and can go to people no matter what their alignment.

    That's what I would do.

Make patrons heroside, for villainous ATs who are coming blueside, even if they START blueside. Allow heroic ATs to keep the epics they currently have, even if they start red.

Later down the road, make "non-patron" epics for red ATs, that they can just have at 41. This allows everyone to have something at 41, whether they did arcs or not. You'll also have to add patron pools for blue ATs, who are redside.

Doubles the number of available epics, more or less. And would probably be the best solution overall, especially with side-switching and crossovers going on.

I'm still wondering about this. I imagine that if you're a Brute and you get up to 41 and grab Mu Mastery, then go to Paragon, you still keep it.

However, if you're a Brute, and you switch to rogue at 39, do you still get to have a patron?

And worst of all, if you start as a Brute in Praetoria and decide to be a hero, and never touch redside, do you get patrons? How's that work?

    Mud Pots

I have a question about this power. Does it autohit? I ask because it doesn't report hit rolls in the combat window. Just damage. Everything else shows hit roll, but with Mud Pots all I get is:

Mud Pots deal 25.23 points of fire damage to Luddite Friar.
Mud Pots deal 25.23 points of fire damage to Luddite Friar.
Mud Pots deal 25.23 points of fire damage to Luddite Friar.

Mud Pots deal 25.23 points of fire damage to Luddite Friar.

My Dom's a Plant/Earth. The tiny radius on it kind of sucks (especially when Hot Feet is so large), but I'm also curious what I need to do to slot it at the moment.
  24. I thought of posting this in archetypes, or even in Virtue since I know most of the people who will be caring about this sort of stuff are on Virtue. So I thought I'd ask, where do you plan to park your characters for morality once GR hits? My characters:

Victoria Noir, my widow, is definitely a rogue. She's a widow but she also does other jobs. She has a vast need (ICly and OOCly) to visit Paragon. She's not a vigilante, because her work is all assassination to the highest bidder and she's not working for the greater good but rather to make money. But that also means she's for hire from goodguys who need to assassinate badguys. Also, she's my main badger and needs badges...! She will divide her time between both zones.

Luna Desani, my snow bunny Controller. She's a goodguy. A snow bunny spirit. Kind of wistful and childlike. She wouldn't do bad things, but she MIGHT do stuff if someone can convince her that what she's doing is a good thing or something. I would lean toward keeping her as a hero, but she could become a vigilante with the right influence. I have a Dominator friend she'll be leveling with, so it depends on the influence of that character where she'll end up.

Mender Sissolie, my kitsune Dominator, would be a vigilante. She would want to be a hero by all appearances, but be a hero that does whatever it takes. Time travel is risky business and the menders are already a gray area. But even though she wants to seem heroic, she's actually working for chaos and disorder under Nemesis. She will spend equal time on both sides.

Kigi Kidate, my Plant/Earth Dom. She's like Luna. She's an earth spirit kitsune, so she sort of just floats about. She'd be heroic, but could be convinced to do other things. She'll spend most of her time in Paragon if possible.

Gemelle Sable, who is a mystic. Interestingly enough, her character design means she's one half of the remnants of one person who split into two halves. She's the darker and more "evil" half. As such she's still a hero, but more inclined to be a vigilante. What makes it interesting is that the other half would be a pure hero. She'd spend most of her time in Paragon.

Tesla Jin, my archery/elec Blaster, is a hero. That's about all there is to that. She's a heroic character who fights for justice and peace. She's a mage + archer who wears spandex and tights, and stops criminals who are stealing purses.

Tanya Atta, my Troll Brute, is a rogue. She's a villain and stuff, and doesn't care for order. She breaks and steals things so she can get superadine. But she doesn't work for anyone, and would have reason to be in Paragon (cause there are lots of Trolls and dealers there). She'd also be willing to take any job as long as the payment is superadine. She will spend most of her time in Paragon.

Tomatre, whom I have 5 (yes 5) different variations of, would be a vigilante. She's a heroic character who fights crime and stops villains. However, she also associates with a lot of people in the Rogue Isles and lets some of her friends slide on minor things, as long as it's not bank robbery or murder. She has, however, tossed some friends in jail (knowing full well they'll just escape). All 5 would technically be vigilante, but rogue is also acceptable, assuming that there are SG/VG conflicts, based on the angle that she does heroic things for money (which is also true). Toma tends to spend most of her time in the Isles.

Sudona Forte, my necromancer, is pure evil and a villain. She could be classified as a rogue simply so she can cross over and do bad in Paragon. However, she doesn't really have much need to. I could probably leave her as a villain, but a rogue would suit her just as well. Either way, she'll be in the Isles.

Riley Tiranis, my thug/trap MM. Her backstory involves her starting out as a hero, being a government spy and assassin. But then the government turned on her and she had to flee to the Isles. Now she scrapes by doing anything she can to survive, including theft and even murder. She's a Punisher type character who would be a perfect vigilante, but spend all her time in the Isles trying to right the wrong.

Dispari Scuro, my (boring) FF/Elec Defender. She's a hero throughout, and is at odds with Sudona Forte above. She believes in right and wrong and is on the good side always.

Xanthos Theta, my fire/kin Controller. She's someone who was previously taken in by the government and experimented on to use as a tool to fight the Rikti. She's now confined to a suit to prevent her powers from harming others. She uses them to fight crime. Because of the way she was mistreated by the goodguys, she believes very firmly in adhering to strict rules and guidelines, like "don't kidnap innocent people and experiment on them for the greater good." She's a pure hero.

Ardent Black, my crab spider. She's an Arachnos agent through-and-through, unlike Vicky above who does other work. She's motivated by and devoted to Arachnos ideals. She's likes the militaristic sense of order and control. She's a badguy, even though a somewhat laid-back badguy. She wouldn't fit in very well in Paragon, so is a villain.

Mitsu, of whom I have two versions (one Scrapper, one Brute). You can tell from the versions I already have that she can go anywhere. Both versions will end up being either rogues or vigilantes. She's a valkyrie who fights for the sake of fighting. It doesn't matter to her really whether it's right or wrong, who started it, or whose side she's on. She's a warrior-woman and wants to bash heads. She'll spend equal time in both worlds.

Kaimana Keahilani, my earth/fire Dom. She's a goodguy. She hails from an island in Hawaii where she and her sister bound a volcano spirit to prevent destruction of their friends and family. She and her sister already have a somewhat self-destructive nature, but still try to do good. They would fit in as heroes. Will spend most of their time in Paragon.

Looking at the list I notice almost all my characters are shades of gray, with very few dedicated heroes/villains. What does your list look like?
