Quote:The corporate philosophy of short-term profiteering vs long-term sustainability is also a large part of the reason we are in the middle of a global economic crisis. It's sickening.
EDIT: When I was in business school, we were taught something that has always bothered me, but it is true. A public company's managers are not necessarily interested in profits. They are interested in maximizing shareholder value through stock price. Think about that line. The goal isn't to be a strong successful company. The goal is to get people to pay the maximum amount for a share of your company's stock.
Normally, that's through making a profit. But that's only part of the equation, and not necessarily the most important part. Dropping small, low ROE (return on equity) business lines is often rewarded by the markets. It leads to short-term thinking that is a plague on businesses. But it's not going away.
I don't know what happened to our beloved CoH, but I suspect that's part of it. -
C'mon people. Don't allow your threads to be hijacked like this. Angry_Citizen is obviously a troll, or someone with a personality disorder, or both.
For the sake of everything you are trying to accomplish here, let your only response be "Angry_Citizen: Troll: Ignored." And then move on! -
* Add nice Shader fx to Auras and/or powers. Easiest example would be powers that cause a toon or area to burst into flame; it would be awesome to have heat distortion effects applied - at least as a power customization option. Of course this would be extra eye candy for Ultra Mode users, but wouldn't ruin already-existing visuals for those who don't run in Ultra Mode.
* I'd also love the option to apply shaders to toons in the costume creator/tailor. I think the mirror effect with metallic skin is great but it would be fantastic to see a watery shader, a wet surface shader, a slightly translucent shader, etc, etc. Even better would be if such shader effects could be applied over costume pieces/textures just as patterns can currently be applied.
* Basically, shader fx rock. More shaders! -
Quote:Best post in the whole thread, IMO. In fact, this perfectly describes the root cause of half the interpersonal conflicts you'll ever have in RL, too. Well, maybe not the bit about jumping up on a table and dancing in front of a group of total strangers, but...then again...They have the right to ask. You have the right to decline.
How that request and response is delivered is what determines which party is making an *** of itself (often its both)... and sometimes its unintentional.
SCENARIO: A group of roleplayers wants to have a social gathering in the Tiki lounge. They can't stop people from popping in via the VIP pass. A player drops in, sees people milling about, doesn't know what they're doing, and starts hopping over and dancing on the table in front of them.
- A Roleplayer may say: "Go away. This is a private gathering."
- The Roleplayer feels like he said: "I'm sorry, we're trying to have a private gathering, and the tone of the event really doesn't fit well with people dancing on the table in front of us. Could you take it elsewhere?"
- The Intruder feels like he's been told: "Get lost, *******. You're not wanted."
- So he replies: "I have every right to be here, too, y'know."
- He feels like he's said: "Look, I used the power to get here. I paid for access to this area, and I didn't have any reason to expect that I wasn't wanted here. Why are you being so damn rude? You could have asked nicely."
- The roleplayer, having experienced this many times before, blends all the previous fights into this statement and hears, "There's no designated RP server or RP zones. I'm allowed to be anywhere you are, and I'm going to prove it by GOING anywhere you go and interfering with ANYTHING you try to do. You'll just have to figure out how to have your somber little gathering with me making 'humping" emotes behind you the whole time."
- Things go downhill quickly from there.
- Eventually, both will go back to their own subgroups, ranting about the idiots they just encountered... and giving such divergent accounts of what happened that most people would never even believe they could be talking about the same encounter.
- Next week: lather. rinse. repeat.
- (Occasionally throw in a REAL griefer or a REAL arrogant roleplayer to add enough truth to make the bias especially difficult to break.)
- A Roleplayer may say: "Go away. This is a private gathering."

Quote:I can't argue for or against that point because honestly I haven't experienced any such lag. But let's not forget that this whole thread started with one person suggesting that other people find somewhere else to go besides Pocket D - to relocate rather than just be mindful of powerspamming the server to death. There's a big difference there and I think any reasonable person could see how that request, regardless of its phrasing, was GOING to ruffle some feathers.Causing lag and potential DC's for those with rigs that can't handle that stuff is a hassle for them. If those with toggles and suchnot are then asked politely to turn them off, and refuse, that then isn't minding their own business, thats causing a problem for someone else by refusal.

Quote:But that isn't what we're talking about. We're talking about a drunk guy and several of his friends hanging out on the other side of the bar who you just don't like. They don't have to be *intentionally* bothering you. You just don't like the way they look, or maybe you don't like how loudly they laugh, or the language they speak or the color of their skin. You're in a bar having a pleasant evening with good friends, when a drunk walks in.
The drunk is loud and obnoxious. Said drunk stands right in front of you, between you and your friends, and starts yelling, using the flash on his cameraphone, pees in your beer, and generally making it impossible to ignore him.
You move to another part of the bar but he follows you and does exactly the same.
You leave the bar and try one down the steet. Another drunk turns up in THAT bar, and does the same thing
Do you:
A) Ask the drunk nicely to leave you alone and go away?
B) Give up and go home, bringing your entire evening to an end?
C) Punch him in the face?
D) Speak to the bar staff and get the drunk thrown out?
They aren't pissing in your beer or even talking trash about you. They're probably oblivious to you, to be honest, and don't even have a clue that their boisterous behavior is interrupting the deeply philosophical discussion you and your friends are trying to have...in a bar.
Griefing isn't griefing without intent. When people are on the other side of the room, having fun and minding their own business...that ain't griefing.
I spend a lot of time hanging out in bars, buddy. No bartender I know would kick out a bunch of paying customers unless their behavior was a LOT worse than anything that is actually going on the majority of the time with the new population in Pocket D. -
Quote:In other words, you feel more entitled to be in Pocket D - especially more than someone not playing CoH the way *you* prefer to play it...regardless if they are a paying subscriber with no more or less right to be there than you. OK.When a bunch of people are in one place, doing an activity, and have been doing so for a long time, for a second bunch of people to show up with no consideration for the others who were there is what is actually rude.
Now, frankly, them being there isnt an issue. I use PD myself on Union, as do many others.
But telling the first bunch to 'get over themselves' just because they are RPers, or 'stop being special snowflakes' is just as rude and hypocritical as anything said to the contrary.
I guess expecting people to have an adult, live-and-let-live attitude in this game is just too much to hope for. -
Quote:Suggesting someone should "go elsewhere" is rude, no matter how politely it is phrased. Period. Only someone with an extraordinary sense of entitlement would think otherwise.Correct. However, thats not what was stated in the OP.
So, the asker realised it might be taken as being a tad assinine, but was respectful enough to word it nicely and say thank you.
I can pretty much guarentee the same would not be the true if situations were reveresed.
So, sure, it might not be 'right' for someone to ask that. But nor is it right for others to then slag them off because of a civil request.
Two wrongs don't make a right, after all. -
People need to act like adults about this sort of thing. Everyone who pays a sub is entitled to gather in any zone they wish to play the game. Pocket D is no exception. Either deal with the fact that other people play this game - not always in a way that you care to participate in - or find somewhere else to go and/or something else to do. This applies to RPers and non-RPers alike.
Sorry, but if there's one pet peeve I have it's seeing people take an attitude of 'exclusive' rather than 'inclusive' entitlement. Everyone has the NCSoft-given right to gather in Pocket D. NO player has the right to dictate to any other player what they are 'allowed' to do there.
