If you give Azuria new clothes, she'll just misplace them and there will be a whole mission chain devoted to finding those artifacts and returning them to her.
She's so irresponsible. -
-
Considering that Daenerys is only 13 when the first book starts, aging the characters was part of that toning down. There are things HBO can get away with, but probably not something like that.

Quote:While I haven't gotten to book two yet, seeing Dillane get hired by HBO again makes sense. They love to keep actors around in their various series. Getting Mayor Carcetti from "The Wire" to play Littlefinger was brilliant.Season 2 Casting news: Semi spoilerish if you haven't read Book 2. Look at your own risk.
Stannis and Melisandre cast.
Another article with different pics which I think are more suitable for the characters.
I don't know much about her but I loved him as Jefferson in John Adams.
Brienne of Tarth cast. And she's 6'3"!
I really like this casting. If you look around for some pics of her I really think she can pull this off well. Like Tyrion, not "ugly" like the book suggests, but in the right hands it's a great role. -

Quote:While I do have Cryptonomicon sitting there, I haven't read a DiscWorld book in awhile, either...and I have many more to go on that series. Decisions...decisions...The Robert/Cersei scene was great; it spoke volumes to the true nature of their relationship and was a great job by the actors.
For me I took a break between Books 2 and 3 and read something else. The remaining books tend to be a lot more "dense" than GoT. So it might not be a bad idea to mix something else in there that will hopefully avoid burnout. -
Getting closer to the end of the first book. Great stuff despite knowing how things are going to end up.
My only complaint: characters seem to "fight back tears" or "hold back tears" an awful lot in this story. Seems like every other chapter. Kind of grating if I've picked up on it during a casual read.
Otherwise, it's very well written and the book is definitely adding to my enjoyment of the HBO series. HBO did make some changes that I thought were beneficial, like moving Tyrion's story of his "wife" to a later point. It made a bit more sense where HBO dropped it.
Also, one of the scenes I loved from the HBO version was the conversation between Robert and Cersei about their marriage. Great stuff, but not in the book because none of the "main" characters were there to witness it. It was also probably the least gratuitous of the added scenes.
I'm a little torn as to what to read when I finish reading this. Read the next 4 books, or that copy of "Cryptonomicon" I picked up. -
And this was a shame because Ian McShane was phenomenal on "Deadwood." The rest of the cast was rather good, too, (loved Tim Olyphant and Powers Boothe on that show) and they were deserving of some recognition.

Hopefully they'll fix the memory-hogging graphics along with the overhaul.
Never understood why a repel power was in there for a melee defensive set. It's hard to hit things when they're flying across the room away from you.
Basically, ANY improvement to this set will help pull it up from the bottom of the barrel. Will the improvements be enough? We'll have to wait and see. Looking forward to respecing my Stalker (if I ever find time to play again). -
If I'm not mistaken, that's the VALIANT credo as written by Jim Shooter.
I think point #3 was much harder in practice than it was to preach. There was a point where they jumped Magnus, Robot Fighter and Rai ahead by (I think) 15 years, but I don't recall if that was before or after Shooter got the boot.
I miss Archer & Armstrong -- such a fun title. (Armstrong's story about how he got drunk and built Stonehenge to impress his wife one night was hilarious.) -
I'd love to go just so I could get my Thor Omnibus signed, but I'm too far away at this point to make the trip.
-
And I just remembered...it was a yellow construction vehicle, but the point remains the same.
-
Although the yellow weakness did allow one of the greatest character deaths in comic books to occur when the Green Lantern Ch'p (a sentient squirrel with a power ring) got run over by a school bus.

Quote:I'm going to agree with Durakken on something -- "Emerald Dawn" would have made a terrific movie. Not just a terrific Green Lantern movie, but a terrific movie. There's enough there to give you Hal Jordan's angst, the hint of a love story with Carol Ferris, AND would have put Sinestro (you know, Green Lantern's deadliest foe) front and center as the villain instead of a lousy CGI hackfest.Go look at Emerald dawn or Secret Origins. Both of those stories are well done and both could be made into a movie with almost no problems. The fact that movie studios and directors don't understand this is making people start to wonder.
The abomination currently in theaters is a massively wasted opportunity. -
Quote:I had the same feeling you did. While this isn't the worst comic book movie ever (I'll leave Elektra, The Spirit and Jonah Hex to fight that one out with Howard the Duck), it really wasn't a good movie. For all the glitz that this movie should have had, it really left me completely underwhelmed. It certainly looked to lack polish to me as far as the CGI, directing, and writing were concerned.
Again, the thing about the better comic book movies is that you can walk out of the theater with the satisfactory sense that people who cared about the source material worked on the movie, because it showed. This movie didn't leave me with that, but rather the feeling that everyone was just looking to churn out a superhero movie without putting any pride in their work.
I'm not going to berate folks who actually enjoyed the movie like another poster whose name you can't spell without "Dur," but what I'm saying is that any kind of movie usually entertains by stringing together a series of successful moments that carry you through it. With this movie, I felt there were too many moments strung together where it was obvious they could have done better, and that soured the experience.
At least Captain America looks like it's going to be solid, so I have that to look forward to. -
Even for True Blood, last night was pretty weird. It's also a little disjointed with Sookie missing a year of time, so there's all this stuff that's happened where I was just going, "Wait...what?"
Lots of things we don't have answers to from the end of season 3 (which I'm assuming we'll get in time).
Loved the twist at the end, though. -
Quote:Joffrey Bieber definitely has a good stabbin' coming to him.Ok, I was talking about it with my sis-in-law and she seems to think Joffery knows or suspects about is uhm, unique parentage. I don't think so. I don't want to know before the fact but was wondering if anyone else got that vibe from just watching the show? Oh, and he does not get killed, maimed, destroyed sometime in the future seasons i will burn it all down!
I should remark that the younger actors (Arya, Sansa, Joffrey, Brann) have all done remarkable jobs for this show. I'm amazed that I could loathe a child character as much as I do Joffrey, but that's certainly in part due to the acting. -
It's in Volume 9 from Rhino. Not sure if that's one of the "No longer available" sets, but you can check on Amazon.
-
Which is both kind of a shame and a glory all in one. The series was truly amazing (perhaps the best thing HBO has done to date -- and I don't say that easily as I've loved a number of their shows), so to end on a ton of set up for the next season was kind of a shame. On the other hand, IT GETS BETTER? WOO HOO!

Quote:That one suffers heavily from being one of the first episodes, thus they really hadn't found their footing yet. With a name like "Robot versus Aztec Mummy," you'd think you'd have great comedy, but there was none to be had.Edit: Toss in "Robot versus Aztec Mummy" and see if you can even stay awake for the whole damn thing.
Also, "The Creeping Terror" has a lot of solid riffing throughout, but the movie is bad. Really bad. I mean, bad for even MST3K standards. I would hazard a guess that something horrid happened to their sound recording while filming, and instead of looping the dialogue back in they just had a narrator come in and read all the lines. On top of that, the "Terror" is a bunch of guys under a burlap tarp with a floppy paper mache(sp?) head. (MIKE: "I get the creeping part, but I just don't see the terror.") -
Quote:I am giddy with anticipation. The Gamera episodes are coming to DVD in August. I still have fond memories of those.
Some of my favorites:
Godzilla vs. Megalon -- don't know if Netflix would have this as it was only on sale for about 2 weeks before getting recalled due to rights and permissions errors. (This was the last straw with Rhino and was one of the big reasons Shout! Factory is now handling DVD releases.)
Space Mutiny -- already seen by the OP, but it's glorious.
The Beginning of the End -- if for no other reason than to see Crow's biography of Peter Graves.
The Wild World of Batwoman -- the main feature is okay (and extremely disjointed), but the short "Cheating" that precedes it is comedy gold.
Mitchell -- this is an absolute must see. "Final Judgment" is right up there, too.
Red Zone Cuba -- according to Mike Nelson, the most painful of the movies they actually had to watch. ("YOU shove off!")
Future War -- probably the most recent film release the MST3K crew got hold of. Styrofoam dinosaurs, alleyways littered with empty boxes, inarticulate muscleheads, clumsy fat guys, and a prop TV camera made out of shoeboxes...this movie had it all.
The Shorts Vol. 1 -- "Why Study Industrial Arts" might be one of the funniest 20 minutes MST3K ever put together.
Also worth seeing -- Hercules Unchained, Hercules Against the Moon Men, Master Ninja Vol. 1, Master Ninja Vol. 2 (these are episodes of an old TV show that featured Lee Van Cleef as a ninja -- nope, not making this up). There's probably many others I'm forgetting. -
You mean like when the linesman missed Alex Burrows chomping down on Bergeron's fingers? And Murphy not seeing what everyone else in the world saw?
The refs missed stuff from both sides. Get over it. -
Quote:Actually, in this case it's a "rageful Canadian youth" thing. Yeah, some sports fans have gotten caught up in it, but a friend of mine from that area basically summed it up like this:Yeah, this confuses me.
"We lost! Let's go on a destructive rampage!"
"We won! Let's go on a destructive rampage!"
It must be a 'sports thing'.
"Vancouver is a nice city, or was a nice city, but it's been on a downswing for years. Lots of young kids here with no hope of employment or any real future with the expectation that the world owes them everything, and there's this general rage that brews beneath the surface just looking for an excuse -- any excuse -- to boil over. It was kind of there at the Olympics but police and security had a huge presence to squelch any problems before they got out of hand. Throw in a general anarchist movement that like to rabble rouse, add security not being beefy enough, and you end up with chaos."
Those self-styled "anarchists" made trouble at the G20 in Toronto a couple of years ago. It's part of the same crowd just trying to cause trouble.
Note: there were relatively few arrests a few days ago in Dallas when the Mavericks won, and I haven't heard of any general havoc happening in Boston last night. Certainly, no fires or overturned cars.
