Hello there, Black Scorpion! Always fun to see new devs posting here before they become jaded and cynical ;-)
Good luck!
-D -
Interesting.
I'm generally of the opinion that MMOs and sequels just don't mix; it seems like the most likely outcome is the same playerbase split over two separate games.
But perhaps watching Asheron's Call 2 detonate has jaded me. If NCSoft is serious about this, let's hope they prove me wrong.

He's only evil about 50% of the time. Granted he's crazy pretty much all the time, but I suspect once you've settled into your new responsibilities a large helping of crazy (with the occasional dash of vengeance) will seem much more reasonable!
Oh, and congratulations!
-D -
I only have one above level 4: Shen Kan, the demonic Ninja/Poison MM. His minions are:
Genin: Dai Lee, Nekakami, Shou-jen
Jounin: Clyde, Tanaka
Oni: The Shadow Khan
Might as well borrow from as many sources as possible, I say!

I suppose if you guys are willing to travel all the way to the east coast, I can travel the rest of the way into Boston proper. Unless something unexpected comes up, I'll see ya'll there!
-D -
Congratulations, Sister Twelve! It sounds like an interesting arc, and I'll definitely check it out when I can.
And best of luck on the employment front, too!
-D -
Congratulations and best wishes to everyone on their new jobs, especially War Witch! Try not to mind the fully customizable sword hanging over your chair!
Also, before I forget, a big thank you to Positron. Being Lead Designer effectively makes you responsible for any shortcoming any player feels about any aspect of the game. What with us players being the way we are, we're only to happy to mention that, too. (No pressure, WW...)
But looking back, I'd have to say Positron's tenure was a fantastic success. The gameplay improved immensely, and it also addressed longstanding complaints/requests from Ouroboros to power customization. What's more, it assembled the best dev team I've seen in an MMO, being both highly skilled and highly informative. I figure at least some of the credit for all that has to go to the lead guy.
So seriously, thank you, Posi. Now start spilling the beans on this "end game" system I'm hearing about!
-D -
Major congratulations on the new job, War Witch! I have great respect for the work you've done on the game so far, so I'm excited to see what happens next.
To that end, my question is about your "overall direction" for the game. The game has a new helmswoman, so I'd like to know how you think that change will be felt. Which of Positron's initiatives do you most want to continue, and what new directions do you most want to explore?
Thanks for your upcoming answers, and best of luck!

P.S. While I have you here, how about adding "Mighty" to the list of titles Heroes can choose from? You know you want to! 8-) -
Quote:Bah, your mind control won't work on me, TV! I'm not a vegetable, I'm a free man!Hi,
I'm your friend, the Television, and I'm taking over the CoH Tech Lead position from Dark Watcher. This is my second year working on city of heroes, and I'm having a great time. I'm looking forward to hearing from you and will continue to rely on you to help make this game great...and help us rid the world of books.
-The Television
Ooops. Gotta run now, been away from my MMO too long!

(Seriously, welcome to the forums! Just remember, we're rated N for nuts.) -
Quote:Greetings, Doc! I didn't think you could get a WiFi signal out there in Faultline. :-)Hey Everyone,
I just want to take a moment to say how excited I am to be working with such a dedicated player base and what a privilege it is to be part of the City of Heroes team.
This is going to be an exciting year for City of Heroes. Rest assured that I'll be working closely with the Community Team to support and keep you updated on relevant publishing news.
-Doc Delilah
Anyway, welcome to the boards!

Quote:That's not necessarily true, Arcanaville. AFK farming could easily include automation - just put a self heal on auto-fire.Quote:So afk damage farming is botting? Putting a teammate on follow is botting? Seems a bit too tight for me if everyone here wants to ban bots. Control clicking to auto a power would be considered botting for that matter.
I would tend to think of botting as requiring external control/scripts outside of the default game.
Is the difference between AFK farming with and without a heal a good place to draw the line between botting and macroing? It seems a somewhat vague one to me. That's not to say that I think your definition is bad, just that I think it makes some sacrifices in the name of simplicity.

Quote:Woohoo! That would be awesome! I can't wait to...Coincidentally, Darkanspiteville is the name of the part of Praetoria that Tyrant sequesters all of the angry MMO players in his world.
Hold on. If I think it's awesome and am happy about it, I'll never get sent there. Which means I won't see it. That just ticks me off!
Boo! I hate you, devs! You can keep your stupid expansion, I'm never...

Quote:You're just jealous because you still have that second leg holding you back!I vote BaB adds one-legged archery as a powerset customization option.
(See the left side of the background image of Beckett's site)
Okay, a stiff wind is going to knock her over and cause her to shoot a pigeon out of the air, and the bowstring is probably going to rip half her hair off her head. Still, its one-legged archery. Its so awesome of a combat form, practitioners only carry one arrow.

Quote:Nonsense. Arcanaville's nice and all, but her choreography is far too by the numbers. :-pDo not sully the greatness that is Arcanaville with me. Compared to her, I am the Patron Saint of Mediocrity. (Not to mention she's probably far better looking than I am.)

Seriously, DR, your videos have always been a joy to watch, and they've improved over time to boot. Don't let yourself think otherwise!

Still more congratulations!

Quote:I approve of the idea, but I'd rather they left all the rewards* in a single pool. It's simpler and, since having all of the rewards at once isn't a balance concern, I see no real reason to segregate the options.I still think my solution to this problem is the best one. Its I suppose a variant of your fourth option, and I've been suggesting it for about as long as the veteran reward system has existed. Make veteran rewards (at least all the ones besides the generic ones, like earning merits or a costume token) into choice tokens where you can choose a reward from a specific pool of rewards. Then add tokens at regular intervals, and add additional choices to the pools at the same time.
* That is, all the non-cyclical, non-badge rewards.

It really depends a lot on what you want to be able to do, and how much time/money you're willing to spend on a build. First up, in case you haven't found them yet, there's nice list of what the various sets do here, and the legendary Mids' Hero Designer will make organizing a build much easier.
Anyway, I believe the most powerful options are generally focused on positional defenses (Melee/Ranged/AoE) and Recharge. But most of the sets that can add those are expensive to obtain. Just remember that you can only benefit from a maximum of 5 copies of a given bonus (so 6 +1% Damage boni is a a waste, but 5 +1% and a single +3% would work just fine).
Personally, I settled for cheaper IOs and focused on +Recovery because I tend to solo a lot (so no help from Vigilence, even by its usual standards). I also added a bunch of Energy Defense, since it felt thematic (and also grants second rate Ranged Defense now, which is actually helpful). I would recommend getting a -Knockback enhancement, though: it's nice not to be bounced around all the time. You can get one from Steadfast Protection (Resistence, also has a very nice +3% Defense IO) or Karma IOs and slot them in Shadowfall, or you can get the Blessing of the Zephyr one and slot it in a (non-Sprint type) travel power, but that's generally a lot more expensive to obtain. You can even slot multiple copies of them for more Knockback protection, but I found a single IO prevent enough knockdowns for my tastes.
Also, bear in mind that you may be able to achieve more by combining IOs from multiple sets in a given power than you could by slotting all of 1 set. For example, I combined 3 Thunderstrike, 2 Stupify and a Dam/Mez Hami-O to get a lot of recharge and damage into Cosmic Burst, while also increasing its Stun duration and getting nice Recovery and Energy Defense set bonuses too.

Quote:Well, since my arc somehow failed to be selected the last time you offered feedback, I'll try again! The arc is "Aeon's Nemesis" - #161865.Ah...do you all hear that? It's the holidays, one of my favorite times of year. I always make it a habit to get those that are near and dear to me a special little present. Why, last year, I bought Marshal Brass a nice gift basket, though he refused to take anything from it. I was insulted, but I took it like the gentleman that I am.
I figured I would give a gift to one of you all! And that would be the gift of my feedback! Aren't I generous and not self-centered?
Feeling nostalgic? You should! We did this earlier before. Here's how it works for anyone who might not remember...
Starting...NOW...until 5pm PST time, you can post one of your own arcs that you would like me to play. Please do not post arcs that you intend to submit for Dr. Aeon's Challenge. After 5pm, I will assign each arc a number and then put it through Aeon Corps' patented Random Number Generator (the new guy thanks all of you for the compliments on his machine) to choose one arc to play. I'll then play that arc and my feedback on it will be posted on a later date. I would give you all a specific date, but I have a ton of shopping to do for the holidays and I really need to get it done before the crowds start rushing in. This year I'll finally get something good so Marshal Brass is finally off my back.
Rest assured, completing the arc will definately make Marshal Brass happy with you! So what's not to love?
You, uhh, might want to use a disguise when you run it, though. No reason.

Wow, AmazingMOO is amazing! He has presented almost all of the suggestions I would have given. Definitely implement those changes, devs!
My only remaining suggestion is something BackFire mentioned: explain the backstory to this event. I understand why you needed to re-use existing mobs as adversaries, and I don't really mind that per se. But there were so many different mobs involved that it became very hard to determine any themes to them: it just became a rumble with a bunch of random mobs. This is especially true of the GMs, since their forms (ie. existing GMs) seemed unrelated to the event, and they simply appear without much explanation.
I definitely enjoyed the event, but I think it can be even better if you have some time to tweak it for next year.

Quote:Okay, I'll give it a try. I've only skimmed the thread, but I'll try to avoid guns other people have already covered.Hey gang...I'm looking for suggestions for potential (notice how that word is italicized? Pay attention to it!)new custom weapons for Dual Pistols. But before everyone goes bonkers, lemme lay out a few ground rules.
- They must fire bullets. No ray guys or crossbows.
- They must be able to fire a lot of bullets and use different ammo types...so flintlocks and their ilk are out.
- I'm looking for suggestions that potentially open character concepts. I don't want suggestions for seven different models of Glocks or a half dozen black, composite material, dual action only, semi-autos that all look the same from more than 6 inches away.
- Include links to pictures if possible.
- Post suggestions only. Don't debate, argue, flame, QFE, /jranger, or any of that.
- Not a peep about other weapon powersets
- Not a peep about anything else in the game
- Not a peep about anything else not in the game.
- Not a peep about these rules!
* The mandatory Luger Parabellum. So what if Castle already mentioned it? It needs to be added, mach schnell! (5th Column bagde unlock is optional, however)
* Since flintlocks are out, how about a Pepperbox pistol for old timers? (alternative image here, though this one is a bit danty)
* Speaking for danty, there's always the sleek, scoped .44 Magnum. Just the thing for those Pfho... err, Rikti invasions.
* For more of that futuristic look, maybe a modified version of Gene Starwind's Caster from Outlaw Star. Admittedly, that was more of a single shot energy weapon, but it would still look kick-*** firing bullets.
Those are my suggestions, at least for the moment.

Quote:They probably just didn't want to alarm you. But haven't you wondered why the free donut selection has been cut back to only powered sugar covered?Wow...are the comments there always so brutal?
I had no idea so much was at stake with Going Rogue, you think someone here would have said something about the future of the entire NCWest division riding on our expansion pack.
But seriously, the original article is nonsensical. Yes, if Going Rogue fails to bring in much money it will certainly have a negative effect on Co*'s funding in the future. But that's still a far cry from having its existence hanging by a thread. The likely worst case scenario would be to see Co* return to the lower staffing it had before NCSoft bought it out. It's not clear to me that simply failing to bring in lots of subscribers is automatically enough to trigger that worst case scenario, either. I think it would take a sizeable decrease in subscriptions to do that.
Massively seems to be ignoring just how hard it is to kill off established MMOs. Anarchy Online survived its disastrous launch and is still going: does anyone think The Old Republic (or as I like to call it, MMOtOR) is going to finish it off? The failure of Legions probably sealed Asheron's Call 2's fate, but that game was far weaker than Co* seems to be. Meanwhile, four years after the original AC failed to bring in lots of new subscribers with Throne of Destiny, it's still alive. In a much more crowded genre.
If City of Heroes were really on the brink of elimination, NCSoft would not have hired and trained so many new staffers to work on it: the expansion would have been made by the existing development team with as little extra support as possible. Going Rogue is obviously important to the future of Co*, but it's not a last-ditch effort to save the game.

Congratulations, Cheshire! I've heard good things about the arc; hopefully I'll have time to try it sometime soon.

Quote:Oooh, pick me! Pick me! The arc is "Aeon's Nemesis" - #161865.Sorry, tangent. The point being, I'll only be able to play and give feedback on one arc.
So, what arc will be chosen to play? Here's how we'll do it.
Starting...NOW...until 5pm PST time, you can post one of your own arcs that you would like me to play. After 5pm, I will assign each arc a number and then put it through Aeon Corps' patented Random Number Generator (a new guy made it, bless his heart) to choose one arc to play. I'll then play that arc and my feedback on it will be posted on a later date. I would give you all a specific date, but you wouldn't believe how difficult it is for these Arachnos goons to stop random super-powered villains from kidnapping me, all to write some stupid paper for the Television.
Like Obsidius, I submitted my arc to the Architect Awards contest, so in theory it's "final." But I'm always willing to tweak things based on feedback, and good feedback is worth a lot of tickets. So I'll ask for a review anyway; if you feel my submission disqualifies the arc, well, I'll forgive you.
But come on: I called my arc Aeon's Nemesis. How can I not ask for Aeon's Feedback?
-D
P.S. Don't worry about people suspecting you of bias if you choose an Aeon themed arc for feedback. Everyone knows that Dr. Aeon's Random Number Generator technology is beyond reproach! -
Quote:That's a really cool model, but how do you handle the all Tanker (or equivilent) team? If an enemy only has so much attention to go around, wouldn't the extra damage from un-countered Tankers trump anything a Blaster could bring to the table?I've always thought that the way this should be managed is to assume that you can only focus your attention on a limited number of things, and things you aren't paying attention to are by definition a more serious threat (because you can't see what they are doing).
In such a model, the heavily armored thing standing next to you is only doing 74 because you are actively trying to make sure he doesn't squish you, while the guy in the robe far away is doing 134 because you're willing to ignore him for the time being. If you elect to ignore the heavily armored guy and try to shoot at the guy farther away, the heavily armored guy would then squish you for 200.
In CoH terms, tankers would only do less damage than blasters *because* foes paid them proper respect and treated them as the biggest threat, not because they *intrinsicly* did lower damage. They would intrinsicly do similar damage, but that intrinsic damage would never actually land unless they were ignored.
-D -
I expect I'll pre-order GR. I've been very pleased with what I've seen out of Paragon Studios recently, and I'd like to encourage more. Still, if I really dislike what I learn about the expansion before the opportunity to pre-order comes up, I can always change my mind.
