  1. Wow, that's a cool piece. It's just screaming to be colored.

...Wonder Woman could use a bigger bust...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, after some lengthy analysis of Wonder Woman's bust (gotta love my job), I've decided you're correct. I've given her chest area an overhaul that will be reflected in the next render I use her in.

Maybe Black Canary needs some analysis next...

yeah I noticed something *off* about the legs also...but didn't feel it was my place to say anything...

I posted these test pieces to generate critique, so any feedback (both postitive and negative) is welcome. While I might not agree with the feedback or act on some suggestions, critique gives me things to consider.

...you'd never purposely DRAW figures this way, so why would you take such shortcuts now?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Short answer is, these renders are before any sort of postworking. They're raw models which I would never place into a final image. Photoshopping to make corrections would defeat the purpose of a model render test.

A note regarding exaggeration; I'm trying to achieve a more realistic look in their physiques, so I don't want to overextend their chests and busts. Alex Ross' pieces are so incredibly successful because they look like real people. I'd like to present a similar mythos. However, just wait'll you see Power Girl... =)

As far as using the same physique; they're actually all different. While I accept that Green Lantern might not have reason to be as ripped as Batman since he's all about the Power Ring, the truth is he's drawn every bit as shapely as Batman is. However, I will consider the critique and might make the differences in the models more apparent.

Thank you for the critique. That's the kind of feedback that's needed to help me get to a more 'perfect' set of models.

Looking good, but should'nt Superman put on a bit more muscles and Batman a little bit less shinely?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I tried to keep him reasonable in the muscle area since he's often drawn bulky, but not overly ripped. I think in the comics, his tights soften his muscle definition some.

As for the shine; that's been a topic of debate between myself and my brother. It's been my perception that matting out his costume has the negative side effect of making his definition not show up quite as well - the shine helps highlight his abs and ribs. I tried to keep it to a minimum, though.
  6. From what I hear, he only lives about 20 minutes from me. I just sent him a note and (maybe) we can finally meet. I'd love to paw through his sketchbooks!

Amazing work, Doug, you said you struggled with WW, but she turned out one of the best looking heroes in the lot!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wonder Woman presented a wierd set of challenges that I've finally figured out. Basically, her outfit is a mix of two different textures. I'd never had to tackle that issue before, but one texture (red and blue) needed to look matte, while the other (gold) needed to look metallic... both on the same clothing model. I figured out how to apply masks to get the two to 'play nice' together.

Beyond the texture, there was an infinite amount of tweaking her musculature, her face (to get attractive AND mature out of her), her bracers, and even her boots.

But hey... it was a labor of love and completely worth it. I can't wait to get these models into some close-ups and beauty shots.

    Warface by Celtic Bolt

    Warface by Guildhelper

    Warface by Warface

    Warface in game

    [/ QUOTE ]

A couple of textures and some parented props and he's done. If you want home modelled up hard-core, you could actually make his ribs and plating in 3D... but I'd recommend a texture for speed. But if he were in a movie, I could see all those plates being segmented and stuff.

Do you make your own costume pieces or is there a pack? BTW although all are incredible.......... Hawkgirl is freaking awesomeness.

    [/ QUOTE ]

No packs. In fact, I think my reliance on pre-made pieces is coming to an end. In the case of Hawkgirl, I modelled her helmet completely from scratch, and that's the peice that really brings her together.

[/ QUOTE ]When my brother finally brings my Poser back to me, I will probably beg, pay, provide my first born to try and get a Warface body parts pack from you. That way I can endlessly pose him and have him chase around naked models in a comic strip

    [/ QUOTE ]

Depending on his design, it might be possible to model the peices and just parent them to his limbs. If his outfit is soft or conforming, then you'd need someone with more skillz that I have.

Got a screenshot? Ot some other piece of art that you consider 'canon'? I can give a better assessment that way.
  10. Nice work, Juggs.

I love calling you juggs - it lets me talk dirty without getting banned =)

Where's Aqua Man, Shazam, and Hawkman?

Just kidding, I love these... any chance of a Mr. Terrific?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm just working on the current lineup at the moment, and those 3 aren't currently on the roster.

I already made an Aquaman, though. And a Flash. And about a dozen members of the Legion of Superheroes. You'll probably see those eventually.
  13. Ok, this isn't really COH fan art, but I'm happy enough with this recent piece that I wanted to show it anyway.

In short, I've wanted to get into making 3D heroes for Marvel and DC for a long time now, and I've been building their heroes for years. After doing that LoneSTAR poster last month that featured 41 heroes, I decided I wanted to try a full team of known heroes to see how close I could get them... and a team of 10 is a LOT easier in scope =)

This is the first full TEST version of the Justice League of America. The image is just a test lineup for analysis and comparison... but it was still fun and I wanted to show what I've been working on.

    Thanks for looking.

    Two questions.

BTW DJedi, I was telling my wife how good your stuff was with 3D art. She was very impressed. Great info, I will try and put it to work on my next four pieces I have to do.

    Very cool. Thank you =)

    Two questions.

    I think you're referring to the technique of 'cuts and flats'. Here are a couple of quick resources. Check out the third in particular;

    Tutorial 1

    Tutorial 2

Tutorial 3 - the best of the lot, imo
  16. Alex, you are SO underpricing yourself.

DarkJedi: btw someone confused your lightspeed character for Turbo-ski and thought I did the giant Lonestar piece. I don't know how someone can confuse the two with the significant color difference in their costumes...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sheesh... their only similarity is the ponytail, and maybe their smaller builds. Although, I guess that would make Turbo pretty easy to create in 3D since I've made about a dozen different Light-Speeds.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
I'm very diligent in linking and giving credit to the artists but for some reason I keep having to explain to people in-game that I'm not the artist...any other collectors have this problem?

  22. I'll be re-opening for commissions soon. My prices listed on my website will be going up a little, but that's a necessary evil considering the time I spend on my works.

Links to both my website and my DeviantArt are in my sig, below =)
  23. Inking has several purposes beyond making a drawing dark enough to scan.

Firstly, inking a drawing solidifies the drawing by chosing which lines wil appear and which lines won't. Since most pencillers will draw things several times to get it right, ghost images can remain. The inker choses which lines to keep and erases the rest.

Secondly, inks can give a drawing a wonderfully organic feel through varied line weight. Pencils don't vary their lines very much, but an ink brush can become really thick or hairline thin with just a small variance on pressure. This leads to the ability to add shadows though line weight that can really make a drawing come to life.

I'm mostly a digital artist and I defer to digital techniques most of the time, but I've seen hand-inked pages that can make me melt with envy.
