To help stave off writing ruts, I occasionally undertake a writing exercise known as a drabble challenge. A drabble, for those not familiar with the term, is a 100-word story. No more, no less. They are little vignettes in response to a prompt.
So, earlier today on Twitter, I put out a call for COH-related drabble prompts. I got a few. You guys are WEIRD. To make it easier for the requesting parties to find (though I name no names), and so that others might enjoy (or maybe take a crack at doing one themselves), here are the drabbles and the prompts that inspired them.

Quote:*****"God, I hate Clockwork. They spew smoke and grease everywhere, there’s that damnable racket everywhere they go, and those bolts of electricity… Christ, they just wear you down. But this is the last of the Clockwork Princes, and I’m not going down now! No, SIR! I’m gonna clear this warehouse out if it’s the last thing I do. I will rise to this challenge! I am unstoppable! I am a god damned force of nature! And DOWN YOU GO, buddy! Thank God… I don’t think I’ve got anything left. I am empty. Wait… is that a gear? Oh s- *THUD*"
Prompt: the most inconvenient time for one's toggles to drop
Quote:Red and white and awkward… the outfit looked almost as repulsive as those damnable Longbow uniforms.
“You are asking a great deal, Mr. Phipps, but I fail to see the gain.”
“Sir, can you imagine the effect it will have on those… poor unfortunates of Haven House and in the sewers of Grandville? To see such a cherished icon of hope and joy. It will raise their spirits… which you can then destroy when and how you please.”
“This had better be worth it.”
“I guarantee it.”
“Very well. But no cameras.”
“I wouldn’t even dream of it, Lord Recluse.”
Prompt: Lord Recluse finds it necessary to pose as Santa.
Quote:Synapse came reeling in the front door, barely remembering to open it first. “Oooooookay,” he slurred. “Take a memo. When DJ Zero says the bar’s got something for everyone, he ain’t kidding.”
He tried to sit down on the couch, but missed and landed on the floor.
“Oops.”
He leaned his head back against the couch. “I’ll just sit here and enjoy the buzz… yeahhh. I could get used to thi-"
For a second, it felt like his brain was exploding and he wanted to vomit.
“Owowowowowow…”
Then he sighed. “So much for that. At least the hangover’s over fast.”
Prompt: Steve gets drunk

Quote:The psychic Clockwork are encountered, I believe, as part of Unai Kemen's arc "To Click a Thousand Glowies".I have a character concept that involves the storylines for Seers and Clockwork. Basically I got to puzzling over what would happen if the Praetorians tried to use Clockwork warehouses to generate Seer Cyborgs instead of recruiting all the human young women. Since that seems to go so bad for them. I then realized that could go even worse if they were unaware of how the Clockwork King controlled everyone.
My personal plotline for this is the IDF tried to do an endrun around the current Seer network with a synthetic seer network. They used clockwork factories to develop the robots needed, but the entire thing just went to crap as soon as the first robots created were booted up. Some went crazy (just not dealable with in any fashion), some started working for THe Clockwork King 100%, some decided they WERE the Clockwork King (they could be reasoned with, sortof) and some just went Rogue.
These Clockwork have Electrical and Mental powers, and I am running one of the Rogues with a Blaster setup (Electrical/Mind). I saw a Wiki entry on Psychic Clockwork. Have I ever encountered these in game and did not realize it?

UNDERWATER ZONE!
No wonder we had to gear up to be Incarnates... forget Arachnos, we're slugging it out with DEEP ONES!

My first REAL experience with Lovecraft was playing the original ALONE IN THE DARK. (Ahhhhh, how many hours lost to playing that game...) Of course, I didn't KNOW it was Lovecraft at the time (or even years later).
Then I marry Bloodspeaker, who is a huge Lovecraft fan. And as he hears me talking about "this humongous multicolored molecule-looking thing that chases you through the house going WHOMMMWHOMMWHOMM," he knew EXACTLY who I was talking about. I then proceed to tell him about the game, and he nods the entire time, going, "Yep... yep... you did what? How fast did you die?"

1) Form a BAF... But ONLY allow melee characters to join it...
2) Instruct your League that they are only allowed to use single-target melee attacks during the "Keep the Mindwashed Inmates from Escaping" phase and that they are only allowed to use Sprint, Ninja Run and Beast Run as travel powers and should avoid jumping if at all possible...
3) They are also not allowed to use any power/temp that holds, immobs, etc
4) Film them chasing the inmates all over the place since they can only hit them once then chase again to catch up...
5) Edit the film and set the whole thing to the Benny Hill theme music Yakkity Sacks...
6) ?
7) Profit!Quote:*bssst*

I'm not sure who the moron in the back was over on Talos Island, but I'd SWEAR that the Arachnos yutz snickering in the back had to be Jenkins.
And I now foresee a ton of AE missions featuring the rescue, abduction, or outright massacre of Woofers the Freedom Phalanx dog.

Clear skies and safe landings to you, Ryu. Sending you all the luck I can spare that your situation improves.

I'd have preferred to see Pendragon wielding his sword, but I can live with this.
(My first thought regarding Marauder's face was that he was obviously thinking, "Dang, even with the shades on, that light is BRIGHT!")

Since Mako and all his finned friends are taking over the streets (and ponds and whatnot), all players automatically have their travel powers changed to Super Leap.

Love the post, SlickRiptide.
It reminds me a lot of my reactions when I watch the earliest trailers for the game versus what they have now.
(Like finding out War Witch was a villain.)

I *LIKE*!
Especially the whole Prison Break thing. I've always found it entertaining that the Prisoners have broken out, and what do they do? Stand around the place shouting about how glad they are to get out, and no way no how are they going back in...

Oh, wow...
I remember when the little private school I attended through fifth grade got an Apple 2e, and oh how we would fight over who was allowed to play on it! Games I remember are Sherwood Forest, Escape from Rungistan, Lode Runner (woo!)...
Sixth grade meant transfer to a public school and the Commodore 64... not nearly as much fun for me, because I was way fixated by then on my Atari 2600. I am STILL the only person I know who can haul a** through Tunnel Runner at maximum speeds and not get sick. Oh, the hours and hours and hours I spent playing on that thing. *sighs, then grins* Which is why I own one now.
My brother scrimped and saved to buy himself a Vectrex when they first came out, and I learned how to do the most rudimentary animations and drawings on it. And Spike! Who remembers playing that? ("Eek! Spike!" "MOLLY!")
Next up, the NES, the Sega Master System, and then the Sega Genesis (there, my heart belongs to the Phantasy Star series, thank you very much).
Back to computers, we had a PC by the time I was in junior high or high school, and I was a wizard on DOS. My brother ran one of the first BBSes in NJ, and I became an ace at Yankee Trader. I resisted Windows until I got to college, and FINALLY caved and put Windows 3.1 on my first computer (as in, not sharing one with brother).
Freshman year of college: Hello, Civilization... goodbye, social life.
Sophomore year of college: Hello, D&D Unlimited Adventures... goodbye, free time.
Junior year of college: Hello, Master of Orion 2... goodbye, insecure male friends who hated being outsmarted by a woman.
Senior year of college: What's this thing called IRC...?
It went downhill from there. I joke that I remember when Yahoo was a text only search engine (the big three were Yahoo, AltaVista, and Lycos).

Am I the only one who finds it hilariously ironic that with all the graphics and processor improvements we've made over the last 30 years, what's one of the first things people love to do? Put a mod on their computer or phone or whatever that lets them play games like Adventure, Pong, Warlords...
Ah, nostalgia.

Quote:If that's what you can do with words, I shudder to think what you could do if you started making videos. All of a sudden I have this mental image of you doing a SHOGUN-length miniseries about the Rikti War or something. You're absolutely right. I'm embarrassed I didn't consider this earlier.
I forgot to estimate the time I've spent on the forums.
Estimated time spent on forums: ~3200 hours; 1.1 hours per day
Also, it occurs to me that all my saved threads over the years contain my post count at various moments in time. And that data can be plotted:
There's actually some interesting information encoded in that graph. For example, I can see the pseudo "break" I took between the middle of '08 and the beginning of '09 pretty clearly. I can see Hamidon (version 1.0) and City of Heroes Freedom as well.

I think that's enough beta testing. Arcanaville 1.0 should be ready for go-live now.

I take that flag, and use it as the emblem/macro symbol for the new Pirate Summoning power, after which I click it and watch as my swarm of pirates beat you to death with a plank rather than making you walk it and risk your potential survival.
I give to the next person a videocamera.

Y'know, Freitag, you're kinda messing with my zen here.
I had a plan for a Captain Mako video done to "Beast" by KMFDM. But apparently that is just way too grim and dark for him. Maybe I should plan to use "Under the Sea" instead.

I'm already working on a particular project for Steelclaw. With luck, you guys will see the trailer for it as a 'preview' attached to CoVIDEOHELL by the end of the summer.
(And I knew I was living up to his expectations when I made *HIM* spew Coke all over his monitor with my first pass at the trailer.)

PS - Steelclaw, don't ever disappear that long again. I was absolutely convinced you'd left and I was now the sole voice for entertainment weirdness on the forums... a very daunting legacy to uphold, let me tell you. -
My thread has taken on a life of its own. I'm so proud. *sniffle*
