Finally downloaded and installed. I'll be F2Ping to see what it's all about the next few days. Seems pretty cool from what I've read and watched on trailers.
-
That's cool. I find it surprising though that considering how much GW2 product they've moved that their stock isn't going up. What do you think explains the decline?
-
Their stock is still dropping. It spiked right after GW2 release, but even 2 million sales can't stop the bleeding. Not sure if the decline is related to the bad press they've been getting from Paragon Studios' closing, but if it hits July's low I can see more cuts in NCSoft's future.

You need to run that response through your Universal Translator:
Dear Former Customer:
We don't care. We'll stall and deflect your questions for two months. At which time good luck even finding our website.
LOL
NCSoft
P.S. Feel free to purchase one of our other soon to close MMOs. -
I think I'll go out in the zone where I have the most vivid memories when I first started playing in '04.
Perez Park
That place scared me. No kidding. It was scary.
All dark and narrow paths that led from one horde of CoT to vahzilok. All because someone in broadcast shouted something about a 'hydra' being sighted in the middle of the map.
I think I was lvl 8. Dark/dark defender. Teaming with a friend of mine that was an nrg/nrg blaster.
I mighta died like 6x just getting lost in the woods. Getting rezzed by drive by empaths. The place was packed with all kinds of noobs. Me being one of them.
Good times. -
Quote:Thanks for sharing. Now gtfo.Obviously a majority of the posters here are very mad COH is closing for good and rightfully so. Me on the either hand am not upset at all.
The games in game server population was pretty average even on freedom and virtue (and this was after the game went F2P!). To make matters worse a majority of people that played on my server (freedom) just farmed and a majority of the toons were lvl 50 meaning less teaming during the lower levels which was a huge PIA. The people that did play lower level toons were either complete noobs and didn't know how to play or snobbish vets who were playing an alt and felt superior thanks to their vet status. Thats a terrible player balance.
I first played this game back in 05 or 06 (dont recall) and have played off and on since. Everytime I returned however the game just felt more dated compared to other mmos. The powersets and combat are pretty much the same from back in 05 and it just felt meh. The game has not aged well for me. Going rogue was nice but its novelty wore off rather quickly for me.
This is a minority opinion on this forum but does anyone else feel the same? When I heard the news it really didnt bother me at all. It was nice to play this at first but it went downhill from there IMO -
Dear OP,
NCSoft does NOT want your money anymore. That's why they're shutting down the game. They made that decision clear on Aug 31, 2012. -
It's not about a knockout blow. It's about persistently haunting every place they look. Be a constant itch that they'll never forget.

They have to respond to you for these if they want to maintain good status. -
This may just be wishful thinking, but I'd think that as part of any severance package the devs got there would be a non-compete clause. And if that's the case, there would be a timeframe during which they couldn't take employment with a competitor or work on competing material.
If that's the case, mayhaps there's more time to reacquire the dev team than people are assuming? I don't know. Can they just start getting hired right away? -
Quote:If you're on the negotiating team for the IP, then yes.So... you're saying we should exchange business cards with the execs at NCSoft?
But look at the other info in light of the current situation.
Their business etiquette is to get to know you first. To not expect a deal the first time. To have prolonged negotiations. Maybe that explains this 2+ weeks of silence. We haven't heard any updates because business negotiations take longer in the Korean business world than the American world many of us work in.
Also, their first proposal is likely to be exorbitantly high. That gives them negotiating room. They're not just going to offer a 'fair' price and be done with it. Maybe that explains why the other IPs they shutdown weren't sold. The people negotiating with them got frightened away by the first offer. -
Quote:The 'spike' seems to be confirmed by this stock report (the 1Month tab is revealing as is the 1Year):This is grand and puts a huge black eye on NcSoft. Both Carbine and Arenanet are probably looking at the "out" clauses in their contracts "with" their products because they can certainly claim intentional corporate sabotage. Another burden of proof, that they knew they were going to do this, the NcSoft Game cards stopped promoting CoH and showcased only two games; Lineage 2 and Aion. NcSoft planned this and waited for the big Guild Wars 2 launch to carry it out so the NA market would look good for investors, but it was only a momentary spike.

One must know the enemy before trying to figure out his actions.
Read the part about how South Koreans do business.
And here is some more information. You'll see that they don't think like 'us'. -
Just wanted to publicly apologize to any devs still lurking these forums. I have been critical of your time and effort in producing powersets and tweaks to the dominator AT many times in the last 6 yrs.
However, having glimpsed your plan for I24 and beyond, I realize I was off-base. For I now know, you all were working on:
- Martial Assault (which implies Martial Control)
- Wind Control
- Radiation Melee (which with Radiation Blast and Rad Armor would've provided the tools to make Radiation Assault and likely a Radiation Control... would've paired for controllers and blasters as well)
Also, your willingness to bring Martial Assault implied you'd strongly consider other melee sets such as SS, Swords, Staffs, and more for the AT I love.
I can also only assume some sort of Water Assault and Water Control would've been on the horizon as well. And Savage Assault would've been AWESOME if you put some throwing spears in there.
Hell, you guys were probably even going to port Illusion some day and maybe even buff Ice Control.
So I want to let you know that I am sorry for being critical of the speed with which you developed the dom AT. You clearly had big plans for doms and it saddens me to think those plans will never see the light of day. -
Sharpening pitchfork and oiling up the torch.

A lot of people are playing on Test to enjoy the Issue that Wasn't.
-
People need to play up the economic impact of this as well.
80 American workers lost their jobs because some Korean company made a whack decision in some boardroom 1000s miles away.
The money the players were spending on the game was going to someone here in the US as well (the 3rd party store folks).
And what about the folks working the servers in TX?
The economy is big national news.
There's your in. -
Profitability doesn't seem to be any part of the equation here. As you allude to they could have a) cut costs without ending the game, b) increased profits by reorganizing, or c) ended it with much fanfare and to do.
a) lay off half the staff for instance and keep the game going. It would slow the dev cycle, but we've been there before and many would still keep playing. If the salaries are as much as you're suggesting that would save big bucks and not lose them much revenue.
b) more revenue... they could've bumped subs a couple bucks a month. Given our current situation, I'm certain the vast majority of players would have agreed to an increase. They could have consolidated servers. Cut the server numbers in half. Less operating and maintenance costs. Or they could've just sold the IP. Make millions on the that and wash their hands of the expense to develop and operate. Afterall, CoH doesn't fit their plans anymore and is such a small market share it's no threat to their other enterprises.
c) fanfare... hey thanks CoH team and players. Unfortunately we need to move in another direction. I know this sucks, but we want you all to enjoy as much as you can before the doors close. We're planning lots of fun activities, give-aways, and events to reward your 8 yrs of loyalty. Afterward, we hope you stick with us to enjoy one of our other fantastic NCSoft games.
Instead we got d)... a big **** you and see ya later. If you stick around for our other games great. If you don't, oh well. Doesn't really matter what you did for us the last 8 years. We're moving on. -
To be clear, I'm not saying we all should just bail. I'm still playing and having as much fun as I can.
I'm just not deluding myself to think that NCSoft gives a rip whether I do or don't. They made that more than apparent a week ago. -
Rift has mages with dominator-like powers. They even have a subclass called Dominator (powers seem like mind control). There are fire, dark, elec, earth, etc.
I've dabbled with them the last few days, so I can't say it's the same or not.
Overall, the game there isn't anything like here. Despite it being newer, CoH is faster, better gfx and art, more customizable, and superior combat. -
I think what the OP is getting at is the MA reward nerfs in response to farming contributed to the death of the game.
There's some truth there I suppose. MA was touted as an alternate path to 50 and the future of the game. That reality never manifested in part due to the anti-farming changes. -
NCSoft is done with this game. Get that clear in your mind. So sticking around to show them anything is pointless.
The only hope that remains is they sell the IP. And that sale won't be affected by current player activity that has been determined by the closure announcement.
If the IP gets picked up by someone else, people will come back in droves. -
Would it be possible to start overloading servers on a rotating basis and crash them one after another? Keep the NCSoft server monkies working hard for their money.
As Thulsa Doom would say, "That is strength, boy. That is power!"
