Grav/Elec plays best at range because...
You have only 3 melee attacks: charged brawl, havoc punch and TS with TS coming late in the build
You have 7 ranged attacks: lift, crush, grav distort, propel, crushing field, charged bolts, lightning bolt, static discharge with the majority of those available before 20
Your 2 pets work at range: singy and VS
Your main AoE controls also work at range: WH, GDF
Based on that, your strength lies in taking mostly ranged attacks and keeping everything controlled at a distance where you'll just blast away. Beware taking on large numbers of foes because of your lack of AoE (so avoid x4 and higher). Stick with smaller numbers although you can bump up the lvl (+2 and higher) with the difficulty slider to maximize xp.
However, if you want to make a mix melee/range, then I'd take all 3 melee powers. I'd also take static discharge because it's your only ranged AoE available until epics unless you commit to slotting CF with dmg procs. In fact, I took both and use them in combo with Ball Lightning from the Mu PPP to get some respectable ranged AoE dmg. I'd recommend Lift over Propel in this scenario because it'll give you a fast animating pseudo melee knockup. You can skip crush and propel, and rely on charged bolt, lightning bolt, lift and GD for your ranged attacks. -
Quote:I'm going to weigh in on this point because I disagree with this concept that supply and demand is driving up costs.I've highlighted the important bit there... it's important for 2 reasons.
1. It's a want, not a need. You can play the game without it and have just as much fun.
2. You want it, dave over there wants it, steve on Union wants it, heck, everyone wants it but there is limited supply. So prices go up as demand goes up and supply drops.
The easiest way to combat it would be to increase supply, but the point is some stuff is MEANT to be rare. Mean I know, but so's life.
While there is a limited supply, demand is easily 10x what it should be. And that's simply because any single player can have dozens of characters across nearly a dozen servers each with at least a dozen bid slots that can stack nearly a dozen high.
So ONE PERSON can place hundreds of bids for a single item, buy ALL of them and then list for whatever they want. I'm not saying that's easy or even fun, but it is possible and it is being done. I wouldn't call that 'demand'. It's control.
There a plenty of examples of salvage for which there are hundreds of them in stock and there are ZERO bids, yet the minimum price is thousands of inf. There's no way you can convince me that there are 1000 sellers out there all wanting at least 10,000 infamy for an alchemical gold. No, instead there are more like 10 sellers with 100 alchemical golds each that control that market and buy up any of the 'under priced' supply with the dozens of standing orders they have placed.
The problem is that any single player has access to way too many bid slots. Stacks of 10 are too many. I'd start there, cutting that number in half, to begin to curb the inflation. I'd also make it so replaced IOs can be resold. And I'd even make the crafting tables allow you to dismantle an IO to get back the salvage and recipe. -
Nothing special about them. Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard.
To further explore the issue, I entered the keybinds settings and changed my follow key from F to K. Press F and everything is fine. Press K now and it crashes.
I also used the right click drop down to Follow. Select that and it also crashes. So it's definitely related to the follow command for me.
A friend of mine tested this in game and had no problem.
Any ideas? -
Since the last patch, I've discovered a couple new crash bugs. The first involves using the F key to 'follow' a target. I tested this with 2 characters on 2 different servers, one blueside, one redside, while flying or on the ground, targeting ally or enemy. Every time I hit the F key, the game crashes to the crash report window.
Today I found another way to crash to the same window - the camera button that's keyed to the Pg Up or Middle mouse button. My son asked to see the face of my character. I tried to lock the camera and swivel = crash. I reset my key binds thinking that was the problem and it happened anyway.
Anyone else noticing this? It's something that's been happening to me in just the last few days. So far, no other keys like the movement or numbers are affected. Just the 2 mentioned. -
Here's what you do in melee range with /earth assault.
-
A lot of good stuff will happen for doms.

Does anyone honestly think they're going to create new APPs just for dominators (2nd least played villain AT) who MIGHT crossover BEFORE they've run their own patron arcs?
That's one hell of a dream you're having. -
Quote:This is a pay to play game, so no, it's not acceptable that any server should be consistently and repeatedly crashing.accept that things happen...
when your car breaks down...
do you start complaining and demanding compensation from the dealer?
And yes, if my car breaks down due to a defect on their end (Toyota anyone?), then I would demand compensation.
This problem has been ongoing for weeks since I17 and its patches. Enough is enough. -

City Zones
- Midnighter Club - Fixed a bug that sometimes caused characters to get stuck in the ground when moving between the Midnighter Club and Cimerora.
This isn't fixed. I just went to Cimerora and was still stuck in the floor. I have tried this with multiple toons and have had the same problem. -
Ice/Psi is pretty good... at later levels (with PSW, patron AoE and dmg procs slotted in AA).
If you can't stomach around 30 lvls of average to below average, I'd avoid the combo.
Ice control is the real problem. It's not that great from start to finish. Ice Slick is perhaps its crowning glory at lvl 12. And that's situational when facing things that fly like freak stunners and wyvern, or are immune to slows like council wolves and nemesis jaegers. It also it highly terrain dependent.
That leaves glacier as your other real control and the recharge on that is the suck. AA gets you some mileage, but you have to charge into melee for that to work. Jack is a good pet, but he has a glass jaw and dies like 10x a mission. -
You're avoiding melee, but you're taking 5 melee powers (hot feet, incinerate, combustion, consume and cinders). Doesn't make sense. If you want to play at range, don't choose fire control.
Smoke and ring of fire are optional. Taking one of them on a whim I could see, but both? Same could be said for the snipe, but for ranged build it makes sense. Of course returning to the choice of fire control being a melee-centric set would rear its ugly head again.
Lastly, not taking Hasten is the real head scratcher. Recharge is the name of the game for dominators. Especially fire control where you have 2 AoE controls that are worth a damn - cinders and flashfire, both of which have medium to long recharge times.
TBH, I'm not surprised you've had troubles with dominators. The power selections you're listing are all over the place and don't mesh the primary and secondary together well. -

I have a fitness-free ice/psi. To do so, I've found the Mu mastery is a must for the Power Sink power. I noticed you didn't list that one. I'd take it over the healing pet any day as he'll spend more time healing jack then you.

Necroing this thread for the obvious reasons.
Something like the whip attacks MMs are getting would make a killer assault set for doms and lead into a natural control set like chains.
Do eet nao, devs! -
Quote:I've refrained from posting to leave room for the massive influx of new dominators we've seen since the revamp.Figured I would post because I can and the Dom boards are definitely bland these days.
So?You all rockin with all these NEW doms? What's your favorite combo so far? Why have somany vet's quit posting altogether? Are dom's better off , the same, worse?
Your mileage does vary but all opinions are relevant.
Discuss the great new world of being a dominator in a super hero game!!

Quote:I would avoid ice control for a first-timer. It's very weak at controlling, especially at range. Gravity is weak early, so if you can't stomach 20+ lvls of single target juggling, avoid that, too. Fire control is a bit of a weak starter, too.First let me thank you in advance for any advice and/or suggestions you give. But now to the main point of my post: I am considering making my first redside toon, and Doms (and possibly Corrs) seem to fit my blaster/controller/scrapper personality well, so which primaries and secondaries are good ones and which are bad ones? By good, I mean ones that can be played solo, and are team-friendly, as well as playable/fun from levels 1-50. And by bad, I mean... well, bad. I like damage, and Doms seem to do quite a bit, but since I don't have a concept for the character yet, any combination of primary and secondary are acceptable.
So I'd look at plant, earth, or mind control. They're solid sets from start to finish.
For assaults, your choice will depend more on your primary choice. If you go with a melee control set like fire or ice, then I'd pick up a melee assault set such as earth, ice, or late game /psi.
If you have a ranged control set, then you can go with most anything, although sets like early /psi, electric, and fire would fit better.
Last, think ahead to your patron set. Mu and Soul are nice in melee with powersink and soul drain, while Mace and Leviathan are better for ranged builds. -
I can't comment too much on mind/ice as I haven't ever played one. I will say mind has ranged control in spades, and /ice is a better melee set than ranged with the 2 swords and ICS. /Ice has some endurance issues as well.
Ice/Psi I have played to 50. This was back in the day before the PSW nerf and all that. But from what I've experienced, ice/psi is a slow starter even with the dom revamp. It's not til you get psi scream at 16 you have any AoE dmg to speak of. It's then a LONG way still to 38 when you get your other AoE, PSW. And then another few levels until you can get a patron AoE.
As for control, ice is still the weakest imho. Ice slick is good, but not great and glacier is great, but long recharge. Therefore, you're whole strategy is ice slick, then charge with AA on and hit drain psyche, hoping you confuse enough and regen fast enough to survive.
Now I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that and my ice/psi was a great 'farm' build, but that took slotting 4 dmg procs in AA to get close to hot feet dmg. -
Quote:If you're wanting to focus on SFs, then I'd go with /earth assault for the extra hold mag from seismic smash. With 3 doms using that, their ST hold and AoE hold, PToD EBs and AVs will go down without being able to fight back. Exceptions are Statesman and Lord Recluse, both of whom cannot be held in any of my game experience.Hey all, me and 2 friends are wanting to make 3 Doms to team together all the time. We would like to try some SF's if its possible with just the 3 of us. My question is does anyone have any opinions on what kind of Doms may be able to accomplish this or is it even possible for 3 Doms to do most of the SF's. I know this is prbably asking a bunch of u guys but I figured this would be the best place to ask. Thanks in advance for any advice.
For primary, I'd take fire or ice so you can stay in melee to maximize controls, although patch type controls found in earth and plant would serve well. -
Listen to this guy. Flashfreeze is a great opener for Ice when you're talking about just charging in to melee. Better than Ice Slick in that scenario. It helps to then have mitigation help from your secondary like /earth's knockdown.
-
I'm voting Mu. I assume being fire/earth you're in melee the whole time. Ball Lightning and Power Sink work better there than Bile Spray and Water Spout. The Mu armor is better, too, and the pet is WAY better. That leaves hibernoob vs surge... one let's you fight while the other let's you rest. I know which I'd pick.
-
What's your assault set? To me, that'll determine what powers to take from ice control. As you mentioned, it's an A or B control set (which imo makes it the weakest of the bunch).
So if you're going with a melee secondary, I'd definitely take AA, Ice Slick and Glacier. If you're going with a range secondary, I'd take Shiver, Frostbite and Flash Freeze instead.
And teaming is definitely a factor. The former group of powers would have more team benefit, whereas the latter is probably better for solo. But again, it'll depend more on your secondary. -
Quote:Ice is faster maturing (lvl 12 - 22), but doesn't do anything special. Arctic Air and Glacier mean you'll be fighting in melee. It has a lot of soft control in the form of slows.I've been thinking about making a new alt recently, and thought about going back to the archetype which I've barely touched - the Dominator.
So far, I have concepts for either a Gravity/Earth or Ice/Earth. Is there any significant pros and cons with the two?
Gravity is slower maturing (lvl 26 - 32), but has more tricks and uniqueness. The grav pet is better than the ice pet overall, although Jack does more dmg (he's squishy as hell).
Ice would pair better with /earth from the melee synergy (I'd recommend getting Tough). However, grav/earth probably would stack the most amount of hold possible for a dominator between the ST, AoE, pet and Seismic Smash combos. -
I've never seen Statesman held AT ALL... perma or not. That was with 8 dominators stacking dominated holds on him, too.
He's the only reason an all-dom LRSF is a challenge (impossibility?) without temps. Although I haven't tried one in a year and a half, so who knows now.
