So, I have a Fire/Earth sitting at ~L40 that I'm thinking of dusting off. I'd be interested in turning him into a solo monster (which it should be fairly easy since damage output is not an issue).

I've been surfing through the domi forums and there aren't many recent builds regarding this combo, so I thought I'd ask someone with Domi XPerience for a few suggestions.
Money isn't really an issue, but I'd like to stay away from PvP sets.

I was thinking of going Ice mastery, just because sleet is that good. As for incarnates, that's something I haven't even STARTED reading/exploring about - so I'm completely clueless here.
I'm going to give a shout out for Primal Forces Mastery. Fire/Earth will be in melee range almost exclusively. PFM has ET - single best melee attack for doms. You can also get two ranged AoE blasts, which you'll have little of from your assault set, so it gives you the option when you can't close to melee. Fire Cages has -kb, so no need to worry about mobs flying away even if you use the AoE blasts in melee range. The shield is SL only, but you could supplement with Tough and some IO set bonuses to really be an anti-SL build.

For incarnate, I think you'll have endurance problems even if you're a permadom. So look at Cardiac. End/Res/Range would be a good benefit to you. I know one of the newer incarnate alphas also brings endurance redux to the table, but I don't remember it off-hand.

For Judgement, Void would fit the melee well. Pyronic and Ionic are excellent choices also because you can use in melee or at range without a problem.

Interface has a few good choices and will require you analyzing your needs by the time you hit 50. If you want pure damage, then look at Reactive. If you need some more defense, then you have things like Gravitic.

Lore pets are all over the place for flavor and utility. Again, if you want more dmg then something like Warworks would be solid. If you want some heals/defense, then check out the various buff pet options. I think you'll want to avoid the Storm Elementals as they have hurricane and would knock your melee targets away from you.

Impact for Dominators is not only trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist, but doesn't even fix the problem...
And 'fixing' it for controllers only, which are now a premium AT, rather than taking dominators (F2P AT) into greater consideration is even worse.

I pray they're doing something about that waste of code called Dimension Shift.

Please blow that cottage to hell and back.
  4. There's a pun there if you're wondering...

Anyway, there's a lot of talk regarding the Coyote Travel power being an indication of a new MM pet set, but I'm following a different flow of logic on this.

    a) I agree that the german shepherd pet and coyote travel power are indications of more 4-legged things to come

    b) I'm not sold on Darkness Control being the something 'special' doms were promised when proliferation was skipped with I21

    c) First Ward (combined with Demon Summoning and the Hellion succubi) introduced some new whip animations with the new version of Carnies.

    d) Whips and Chains are control/assault sets that have been requested numerous times for dominators.

Putting this all together, I'm saying that we'll be getting an Animal (Beast) Control and Whip Assault sets as the 'special' plan for dominators.

Animal would be a good anti-pairing to match Plant Control.

Animal (beast) control could use whips as the control animations for holds, immobilizes, knockdowns, fear (whip crack), etc.

Whip assault would fit the theme and the animations now exist.

There are plenty of 'wild man' or 'lion tamer' heroes/villains in comics as inspiration.

Lvl 32 pet is some 4-legged beast that they are developing the tech for.

Not saying that MMs won't get animal summoning (I think they will as well at some point), but a full set of multi level animal pets would be some monumental animation work for a premium class. Whereas these controls would fit doms (F2P) and controllers (premium), as well as have potential for blaster or melee toon carryover.

    Discuss.

Apparently you haven't listened to the Arachnos motivational speech in GV.

    Lord Recluse ftw!

Maybe this means redside will finally get some new unique content and full complement of strikeforces.
  6. The 11.12 drivers had no problems. Mostly spent time logging in a couple dozen different characters and making some costume changes. I did run a couple solo missions as well without any issues. I should be doing some more playing tonight and teamed so I,ll let you know.
  7. I'm downloading and installing the 11.12 drivers today to test with my Radeon HD 6700 card. The game has been running just fine with the 11.9 drivers the last few months. I'll let you know what happens with the updated version.
  8. Are some of you actually excited about these tweaks? Did I miss something cuz they sure sound lame to me. How about addressing some of the real issues with gravity as a set? What about considering the player suggestions for making gravity better?

Did they make Lift an AoE? No.

Is Propel turning into a cone? No.

Is Wormhole getting its AoE increased? No.

Is Wormhole being moved to lvl 12? No.

Is Wormhole's stun going to hit before its aggro? No.

Is Dimension Shift being deleted from the game code? No.

Are the animations being made more visible? No.

So what's there to even talk about here? A couple powers are going to have more damage POTENTIAL... maybe. Whoopdee Doo! I'm a fan of gravity, but none of the stuff that's being proposed is remotely interesting and barely qualifies as improvement in my book. Somebody please explain why this should get me excited.

As someone who's pvpd a lot with grav doms let me say thAt dim shift is as meh as any other control after all the durations were standardized back with i13. Phasing a few targets for 4 seconds isn't doing anything other than tossing a possum in front of a tractor trailer. You go "hey what was that?" and keep on trucking. And it prevents teammates from attacking multiple targets. And you have no control over who actually gets hit by it.

So if the best reason to keep dim shift as is is pvp, then the good arbiter is clueless and there's no hope the set will ever get the love it really needs.

    Grav/thorn

    Earth/thorn debuffs like nobody's business.
  13. If you want any grav changes, you'll have to hope for it to be ported to scrappers or blasters. That seems to be the key to getting sets buffed.
  14. Now there's something I'd pay extra for. Have you seen some of the whip fx with the Carnival of Light?
  15. DarkCurrent

    Grav/thorn

For Grav, skip dimension shift. You can also skip one or two of the following: crush, lift, or propel. With thorns you'll be in close range most of the time, so that may affect your decision on which to keep.

Everything else from Grav I'd pick. GD, GDF, WH, CF, Sing. There's your bread and butter control package. With CF, it's a useful proc mule. You can get 3 dmg procs in there iirc, making it a serviceable AoE dmg power.

For /thorns, the skippable power is trops. It has uses though, so it's not a no-brainer skip. The rest of the set is worth getting. Considering grav gives you a few skippable powers and that fitness is free, you can easily take the other 8 powers. You could probably skip Aim as the thorns attacks each pack a hefty -def so once the first hits the rest will too. You could get enough extra accuracy from set bonuses or go with leadership and tactics to skip Aim without missing it. Also, I'm not a huge fan of Impale. The animation time on that is somewhere between forever and eternity. The immobilize and -fly are nice side effects though and will stack nicely with your controls.

Might be a good idea grabbing leadership for assault anyway. Majority of thorns damage is lethal and highly resisted throughout the game. The amount of toxic is laughable, so don't count on that. The dmg boost with assault will help.

  17. Ok, so we're getting Dark Control and that's supposedly not in place of Illusion. It's also supposedly the 'special' set doms were getting that prevented anything new from being released to them with I21.

If that's the case, then why hasn't Illusion Control been proliferated to dominators yet?

If it's going to be, then isn't it time already?

If it's going to be changed, then shouldn't the devs say so?

If it's not going to be ported, then shouldn't the devs say so?

What's the holdup? What's the secret? Why isn't Illusion Control a dominator primary already?

This is a 2 stage build in my opinion.

    Stage 1: ranged
    Lvl 1-24

You have minimal ranged attacks and controls, and the ones you do have are underslotted. Go with a ranged chain of gravity distortion, lift, psi dart, mental blast, psychic scream, crushing field proc'd for dmg.

If you like the feel of this, you can stay ranged the rest of your career and pick up crush, subdue, and psi lance, plus whatever APP/PPP ranged attacks there are.

    Stage 2: melee
    Lvl 25-50

Melee starts in the mid-20s because that's when you first get Drain Psyche and have it 5 slotted. Until then, stay out of melee because all you have is mind probe. At 26, you get worm hole. This will allow you to telestun mobs into a corner where you'll then hit them with crushing field and drain psyche repeatedly. Back out to fire psy scream occasionally. Just keep layering the ST stuff on top of that.

Melee really starts when you get PSW at 38. However, please note that the tier 1/2 of the APP/PPP are now available at lvl 35. Fire mastery gives you Rain of Fire and Fireball to choose from. Ice Mastery gives you Sleet. I recommend either. You'll get some much needed AoE and the rains work quite nicely in melee on mobs that are stunned from wormhole and immob'd from crushing field. Alternatively, primal forces mastery provides Energy Transfer for a massive ST melee shot. It does self-damage, but DP regen should moderate that. Also, you could get Leviathan as it has Water Spout and Bile Spray at the 35 position. This PPP would be best for your ranged build though.

In summary, ranged attacks and controls are picked first:

    gravity distortion
    lift
    psi dart
    mental blast
    crushing field
    gravity distortion field
    psi scream

Melee attacks and additional controls come later:
    drain psyche
    worm hole
    singularity
    mind probe
    psi shockwave
    subdue

Add a APP/PPP for additional AoE:
Fire and Ice would be tops
Primal is nice, as would be Leviathan
The others are good in their own ways, but they don't bring the early aoe attack the above sets do.

i think im just dissapointed, not because its not autumnal, but because i can see this dark set as being a mix and port set and we really are only getting it because controllers are aswell, well in some form, dark affinity.
well i wont make assumptions lol ive made too many of them, i will wait and see how this set fairs.
I agree about getting these sets not because dominators were due something, but because controllers were getting yet another set so they might as well toss a bone doms way.

I'm reserving judgement on whether or not this is the 'special' set we were told to be patient for until I see specific powers' numbers and animations.

Don't get me wrong, I'll take another new set and play it. But don't expect me to swallow the party line that we had to wait for dark control and dark assault because they required extra 'special' effort and time. We'll see if I'm wrong in the next couple months.

The set seems to pair a CONE Fear and CONE Immob with a PBAOE stun?? That makes no sense. And the problem with Fear for locking things down is that things get at least 1-shot off at the first fear and any subsequent damage. I'm just not convinced the set has anything awesome to offer.

Maybe the "ZOMG!" T9 will turn things around.

As far as dark assault, I see it being a sucktastic mish-mash of what Blasters got plus mabe 1-2 other things. No way it will compete with Fire for ST/AOE damage.

    /meh
    So you're not feeling 'special'?

And in all honesty I DONT want Illusion control on Doms..I want them to make something for DOMS.. period...
I'll agree with you to the extent I'm not convinced dark control is the something 'special' for doms. New animations should be cool, but the concept isn't anything OMG at this point. That's not to say I'm expecting something else will be announced, because I'm not. I think in the Devs mind, this is the special treat. I disagree.

I'm also still miffed that it took this long to get dark assault proliferated. All it is is a cobbled set, so what was the hold up?

Plus, there's no Illusion port AGAIN. If there's a plan to revamp illusion or whatever, then say so and people will quit asking about it.

If whips and chains is released, then I'd be ecstatic. But dark... most folks are looking at that like 'yeah, should've been in the game already' and not as something 'special' that you had to wait for it.

Sad thing is both sets could be 'fixed' with a couple minor tweaks.

For ice, they could put some -dmg debuff in the controls like Shiver. Take the dmg out of flash freeze, so it doesn't interrupt any other sleep effect and prevent you from stacking. Put -kb in flash freeze so you can sleep mobs and not wake them up by them falling down on ice slick. Remove the -kb from the immobs so ice slick starts them flopping and the immobs keep them there. Jack could stand to be tougher. Maybe increase his defense numbers, or give him an ice patch power like blasters get.
  23. More fear please! Seriously. I'd like for this set to be truly unique. Focusing on the fear factor would be fabulous for my fellow control freaks.
