Is that an all-inclusive list of what's in that Complete Collection thing? Or is it going to include the various booster packs as well?
-
Ordered the Vapor-X model.
Let's hope the result is more like the old Maxell commercials and less of the 'computer goes boom' variety...
Thanks to all. -
Well, they're both the same price.
I'll probably try the Vapor-X.
I think I can reasonably hide $150 in the monthly batarang budget... -
I don't plan on overclocking. Though, in your estimation, FX, given my situation, which should I try? The vanilla or the Vapor-X?
-
Just in case my edit wasn't seen, how about this? It's the same as the 5750 card I linked to earlier, but it's got an extra/different cooler mechanism. Same price, but I'm wondering if the that extra cooler would be too much in terms of power draw.
-
That's the first time I've been called 'classy'. Usually, I hear the term 'classless' a lot.
-
Yes, I got the Steve Martin reference. Loved him in the old SNL skits. The Jerk was a pretty good movie too.
Well, you know how stuff moves in the computer world. Six months is as good as a lifetime in any other field.
I'll give it a try soon. With any luck, it'll mean I can eek out another couple of years with this box. Considering I've got a Tandy 1000SX (or is it EX? Can never remember) that still works quite well, six years on one system (more or less, a couple of parts have changed but it's still the 'same') is pretty piddly.
Thank you all for your help. Now, FX, just keep that $600 rig updated on a weekly basis for the next few years, just in case I need to build an entire one.
Edit - Oh, one other thing.
I saw this. It's the same as the other 5750 I linked, except it has (apparently) a better cooling mechanism. It's the same price. Would that extra cooling push it over the edge in terms of power draw? -
Ok, model # for existing PSU: N350N-00
Combined +12v: 28A
Combined +5v & +3.3v output: 150W
+5v: 22A
+3.3v: 17A
+12vA: 18A
+12vB: 18A
+5vsB: 2A
Edit - Would I be able to salvage the RAM from the existing box for usage in a new one? Also, both my harddrives are SATA-capable, as is my DVD-RW drive, so I'm guessing I could salvage those.
Edit ^2 - How good would that resultant computer be, MB? Would it have a potential shot at running Ultra Mode decently when GR comes out? I'm not really one that understands specs or whatnot, but so far in my life, I've been fairly competent at putting stuff together. Granted, that's been limited to installing software, plugging in new cards, RAM, and harddrives. I've never put in a new PSU, motherboard, or CPU before. Also, would I have a fair shot at it lasting at least as long as the current rig? I got it in 04 and it's still chugging away. -
Quote:I believe it was 2 separate 12v ratings. Both at 16A each. I'll check again tomorrow just to be sure. Need to take a second look at my slot usage as well.Yea, well video card manufacturers first tend to err on the conservative side with their minimum PSU requirements because they are guessing that gamers may only know the total power output and that until recently PSU manufacturers didn't list the max power output at 12 volts, just the limits on each +12V rail, so even if they did list it confused the average Joe. The assumption is that a 450 watt power supply, even an older one from years ago, will have enough power at 12V. They are just covering their backsides.
That said, the HD 5750 uses at most 100 watts in torture test conditions, normally 75 or so in games. That's roughly 9 amps at 12 volts. Your current PSU, is 350 watts. That 400 Watt PSU I linked to earlier which is sold as an upgrade for the Dell 8400, has 29A at 12 volts which is 348 watts at 12 volts. It'll work fine as long as the manufacturer is being truthful.
BTW do you remember what the amp rating at 12 volts on the sticker with your current PSU? It's tough to find any info online about it, the only one I saw was 13A which is scary low if they are also providing a 6-pin PCIe connector. -
I may have to just go with a build-it-yourself model comp. Something that I can hide in the monthly batarang budget. Buy a part or two at a time.
I looked at FatherXmas' $600 model, but that's six months old, so maybe something better has come out for a similar price. I wouldn't need new hard drives or opticals, so that would save some there.
But that would be the first that I've ever built from the ground up and well...it's intimidating... >.< -
Oh sorry Kosmos. I was referring to the one that FatherXmas linked for me. Wasn't talking about yours. :/
-
That PSU still wouldn't be good enough for a vid card that's worth upgrading from the 7600GT. Most of the ones I've seen list 450W as the minimum, but they don't list the 12v requirement.
I looked up that PC Silencer model PSU and it lists the same 12v amperage as the one that I linked to on eBay. What is the problem with the one I linked? -
Ok, I found this combined with this power supply. One thing I noticed on the PSU is that the 12v amperage is kinda...low (lower than my existing PSU at any rate).
Is the 12v output not that important anymore? I base it on the vid card only saying <x> wattage required with the PCI express connector.
Ya, I know it's $200 +/-, but I'd like to eke out another couple of years on this box. -
Hmm...ok, after inhaling a bunch of fumes from the compressed air that I had to use to clean out the case (dang dustbunnies and their hippie dust commune), hitting my head on the underside of the desk, scraping my arm on the carpet, and other assorted travails, I got at the PSU.
Whichever genius thought that putting the specs sticker on the underside of the unit needs to be fired...out of a cannon...into the sun.
Anywho...it's 350W. Ya, kinda wimpy. But I don't know if I'll be able to actually get anything better in there. It's a Dell Dimension 8400 box. It's got a section of wires heading into this tesseract looking alternate universe thing with pipes and gnomes and other monsters. It does have, what I assume to be, a 6-pin PCI power connector? It's black, gotta clip on it, has two rows of three pins. Plus, the unit has these pin holes that match up to the case and an attachment clip to the side.
So ya... -
Thank you as well FatherXmas.
See, it's stuff like this that drives people to the consoles for gaming. Can't really blame them I guess. Even I'm starting to get to the point (aside from the draconian DRM schemes) that PC gaming just isn't worth it for more than MMOs. :/ -
*head asplodes*
Seriously though, thank you for that. It gives me some good info. I just wish these dinks that are making them would have some form of standardized nomenclature for models. -
Would it be possible to list the types (like the 9800 series, 200, etc) in order of which is better? I don't need exact specs, but where they would rank compared to each other, with my 7600GT at the bottom.
Is that a reasonable thing to ask? Obviously, omit the ones that $200+. Say, a limit of maybe $150ish (ish giving some wiggle room there). -
See...this is why I don't like shopping for components. A 4850 is better than a 9800.
*head hurts* -
DirectX 11 isn't really that big of an issue. There's not really a whole lot of PC games coming out anymore that interest me, given the absurd DRM schemes prevalent nowadays. The only possible one that I know of ATM, is Fallout: New Vegas
-
'lo again.
This time, I'm looking to upgrade from an nVidia GeForce 7600GT to something a bit better. I'd like to keep price under $100, if at all possible. It needs to be PCI-X though.
I'm looking for something that can run, say, Fallout 3 on pretty high settings.
Other stats: 3GHz P4 w/HT, 3gig RAM, XP (no, I'm not upgrading to Vista or Win7).
Thoughts? -

Ok, yeah, that does sound creepy actually >_>
Think I'll leave the humour to people like Steelclaw, who are actually good at it ^^;
Putting a branch on your head and going 'tweet tweet tweet I'm just a bird' does not count as "Hide". -
Quote:I believe the correct term is "stalker".
At some point, we've all stood outside of War Witch's apartment and played the role of Secret Admirer.
Or at least that's what the last set of charges said...

Quote:I'm going to disagree with you. Last I checked, we were allowed to suggest removal of something. Whether or not you think it's 'selfish' is irrelevant to the conversation. The thing is, you say you want it gone because you're tired of it. Others aren't. Nobody should be asking for content to be removed just because they are personally burnt out on it, it's limiting other peoples' options, and that is selfish. By the same logic that you're using, Frostfire should just be pulled from the game. I mean everyone's done that until they can memorize the map, and he actually is overpowered, unlike Snaptooth, who, even in the Valentine mission can be easily beaten solo by anyone from their teens on with just a little tactical thought.
And your comparison to Frostfire fails. You can easily avoid Hollows content or use the drop mission feature to bypass him entirely. Snaptooth, for the Valentine's Event is, for all intents and purposes, the majority of the event.
I have had more problems with Snaptooth, even on 50's, then I ever had with Frostfire, regardless of the character type. The only one I didn't was my Blaster that could Hold him. I also love that you are basically saying that anyone who doesn't easily solo him is a noob without an ounce of tactical planning.
Quote:Most people in here that are blase about this event are saying that it's because there's nothing new to do. That's not a specific complaint about what there is to do being bad, just that it is the same thing again. I actually find both to be interesting missions in their own rights. Both use unique maps, have something to do other than just find target and make it dead, and feature a Boss that doesn't rely on abundant status effects or the dreaded purple triangles to constitute a challenge.
Scratch & Ganymede? Ya, those are decent missions making use of the otherwise not that common teaming of Hero & Villain. I would like to see more of them, as it would get more people playing on Redside (potentially), at least for a bit.
Snaptooth relies on a) lots and lots of henchmen that build up and can easily overwhelm the not-as-durable characters; b) fighting him 3 times; and c) lots and lots of damage combined with perception debuffs.
Quote:There's room for improvement through addition here. The Pyrrhic choice of just getting rid of something because some don't like it or are bored with it would be both an overreaction and a mistake.
I'm not going to respond to you futher on this. I've stated how I feel and my reasoning for such feeling. Feel free to have the 'last word' if that is important to you.
Peace.
Edit - Oh ya, content has also been removed in the past, as part of storyline advancement. Calvin Scott Task Force, which I doubt any new player will ever see in Ouroborus. Possible, but unlikely. Snaptooth could be removed, or at least modified greatly, as part of ongoing story. Have DJ Zero say we finally got the best of him and he left to go sulk in a toadstool patch or something. But look! There's the guy who gave Snappie the inspiration for his shenanigans! Go get him! -
Quote:I gave you my reasons. And IMPO, I don't think they are out of touch. If you don't like them, tough. I'm voicing how I feel about the event. After how many years now, of dealing with the same freakin' overpowered enemy, it's getting old. If someone doesn't like doing something, then it's an indication that it needs to be looked at. If people don't like doing say, the Quarterfield TF, then that's an indication that it needs to be looked at, rather than ignored with statements such as yours.I could finish that BNY mission in about 10 minutes. I did the thing a couple hundred times this year and he only got hung up about a half-dozen times. I also did it mainly on level 14ish characters, who really don't have 25x50-75kx4 for all of the items from that mission to throw around, and certainly can't reasonably make that much in the hour it took to get the missions done.
In the end, though, "Because I don't like doing it" is not a valid reason to remove anything, especially if they give you an alternative method to get those rewards. It ends up sounding like you imposing your will on everyone else.
And they aren't giving an alternative, at least for the Valentine's Event, it's Snaptooth or nothing. IF there were an alternative, his continuing presence would be marginally acceptable.
If your character can't make the money with that character, have a higher level character with more inf buy them for you, use an intermediary (or SG base) to transfer it to the lower level character, buy as necessary.
The Winter Event & Halloween Event have at least gotten updates. What real update has Valentine's Event gotten, because I can't recall anything ATM.
Edit - People should be looking forward to events, not saying, "Him again? Call me after it's over". Sure, for people who've never dealt with him before, it's something, but lets face it. Until GR comes out, we've got an aging, relatively stable playerbase. The majority of which, I'm guessing, have seen Snappie at least once before. And if we saw Going Rogue actually Going Live before the end of summer, I would be O.O suprised. -
Quote:Because a) they're too repetitive; b) Snaptooth is stupidly overpowered in his EB form in the V-Day mission (moreso when you consider his flood of henchmen). At the very least put in missions, beyond the one-shot arcs from Ganymede/Scratch, that have absolutely no Snaptooth in them. He's just an annoyance. Bring back the Gamester. Heck write some themed radio-type missions. Maybe 5 or so, just for some variety. As I mentioned in the post that you quoted. Even with that, why discard the existing missions, then? If they give you an alternative to obtain those things, that answers your problem without taking content away. I just ran all of my remaining characters that hadn't done it already through the Baby New Year Missions during the last Winter Event specifically to avoid having to spend my canes on things that are quicker and easier to get by running a short mission. I doubt that I'm the only one.
I don't know about you, but I did not find escorting that dwarf through the various obstacles to be very quick. He'd always get hung up, either in the cave or on that ridge or trees near the exit. I found it much quicker to go bid 50k per cane for the 500+ canes (each side) I needed for my characters. Heck, I even managed to turn a profit on some them when I flipped 'em right before the event ended.
The adding of Canes to the Frostlings for New Years event was a pretty good move, as it reduced the need to do the mission.
