  1. No, I hadn't tried the brightness bit. I'll see how that works out.

Looking up my old monitor, it was a 45ms response time. Refresh seems to be limited to 60 and 75Hz, same as the old one. Screen size is about 1.5" wider, but it's also a widescreen model, more like a newer TV vs the old one's more squareish appearance. The old monitor is a MAG Innovision LT765S.
  2. My old LCD gave up the ghost today, it was about 8 years old, so no surprise there. However, the new one I got, an Acer P186H, is giving me fits. I can only stand to use it for about 10-15 minutes at a time, tops, before my eyeballs feel like they are going to explode.

Is there anything that I can do, such as refresh rates to somehow counter this? It was the cheapest monitor at the store and if I can't get something done, I'm going to need to take it back and try the HP model that's $20 more.
  3. Serenity...how many screens was it on? I know it wasn't in my local theater (along with a boatload of other movies, but damn if they can't get the latest formulaic chick flick).

Scott Pilgrim. It had the downer of a main "star". My word, I've seen toast that has more personality and charisma than that kid.

Think I saw that method of folding the sauce in after the rice is already cooked, on Good Eats.

I like it because it gives the rice a nice tang during the eatings. I tried using a bit of chicken stock powder during the cooking (so that it would absorb, sorta like doing couscous), but found it didn't really add anything worth mentioning to the flavor.

This mirin/vinegar folding makes the rice slightly sweeter. I use a sticky-type rice that has been washed two or three times. It's quite good.
  5. The Spectre is, arguably, the most powerful being in the DCU. He operates as the literal Wrath of God and performs vengence accordingly (or at least he did before going mad-sickhouse).

Superman is not god. He is a powerful being, but that entire universe is filled with powerful beings. Darkseid could be one, as well as possibly all the things stuck on the Source Wall.

If you're smart wit yo moneys, enjoy the luxuries of immediate gratification
The other day I found myself cheering when I realized those whippersnappers would be going back to school, rather than feeling sorry for the little buggers.

I know I'm the last person that should be telling anyone what to do with their monies, given my rather...unique...situation, but still.

As another poster said, I don't view this as a need, but a simple want. I can think of many things I can use it for, so if I'm willing to pay for the privilege, why not?
I know I said this before, but you might consider putting the money that the phone would cost into your retirement fund. I'm guessing you're somewhere in your 20's, maybe early 30's. That money, IMO, would do you far more good prepping for the future than in the immediate gratification of the now.

    Cripes...I'm an adult now aren't I?
  10. I use the kind of headphones that wrap around the back of the head and are an over-the-ear rather than in it. There's a small tab that rests on the top of the ear.

    Something to read re: earbuds.
  11. I tried it yesterday and got the badge no problem. 8 people in a 10 minute, Swiss Draw marked match. A variety of levels and ATs, both hero and villain. Waited until the FIGHT! disappeared for the other people to quit the match. It was either 3 or 4 rounds, can't recall, and on exiting the last one, the badge popped.
  12. Cheap Plug of the Month? Ah yes, the hair replacement plan on installments...

Eh, I've got some shoes from 8th grade (about 18 years ago...cripes...that's a whole person who can vote...) that I still wear when I know I'm going to get dirty, like doing drywall or painting.

There is something to be said for disconnecting out of the hive mind that seems to follow the "need" for constant connection. I think we're reaching the point where we are navel-gazing too much and ignoring the world around us.

Hundreds of dollars a year? I've got 2 pairs of shoes that I've had for at least 3 years.

    Combined, they cost around $25.

One can be just as organized with sticky notes and a computer. I survived 8 years of college just fine without a gadget keeping track of things for me. I'm sure you could too.
  18. New Bleach(es?) tonight on Adult Swim. Airs right after Kekkashi. All I can say is it's about time.
  19. Do you want an honest opinion about cell/smart phones?

Unless that phone is necessary to your business, then I would suggest not getting either. Go get a simple prepaid phone and about a year's worth of service for something like $120. In my case, we simply don't use our cell phones (not smartphones) enough to justify spending $70 a month on them. That prepaid business will allow us to save (probably) around $700 a year.

Take the money you save and put it into your retirement account.

To me, things like smartphones and all that jazz is just an extravagance that isn't really necessary. An extravagance that costs quite a bit of money. Ask yourself, if the cost of that phone + service is something that is necessary to you or is it something that you've been told is necessary to you.

Just free advice, so naturally, it's worth what you paid for it. *shrug*
  20. That soup I made earlier? It's great on sushi-ish rice.

Make up a batch of sticky-type rice. Not that quick cooking stuff, but the real deal. Once it's done cooking, put in 1 tablespoon of mirin (sweetened rice cooking wine), 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, 1 teaspoon of sea salt, and just a little bit of sugar (dissolve the dry stuff in the wet stuff first). Pour that into the rice and fold/cut the rice around to make sure it's all covered.

Take out a few scoops and put the soup on top of it. Really good. And the rice is good just by itself. Slightly sweet and just a little bit tart (like I like my women ).

Well, if a villainside run slowing down to a slideshow reminiscent of the 100+ man Hamidon raids is considered "fine".

Srsly...that was horrible. I was getting close to 1 frame per second at times on that on a Radeon HD 5750. Can't even imagine trying it with anything lesser. And yes, settings were cranked down to pretty low.

If the MoCoP were based on solely YOUR team not using temps and not being defeated, possibly. But relying on 24 people to not be defeated, with no nukes and no shivans on a broken AV? That dog won't hunt monseuir.

Ya, my villain got Master Thief tonight on Protector. You have to make sure to select the IoP reward that gives out less merits. I'm fairly certain that if you take the merit-only reward, you won't get it. The one for me listed "True Furnace" as the temp power.

Which, I'm glad the devs put that in. It means that people can now get that badge the "right" way, rather than through a broken mechanic.
  24. Presumably, Power Liberator is also awarding if Master Thief is. Knock two more off of the list of things that can't be obtained anymore.
  25. Protector succeeded on villains tonight.

Edit - You can also get the Master Thief (and presumably Power Liberator) badges as well. You need to choose the option that grants the Item of Power option + merits, as opposed to the Merit only reward. No longer, apparently, are those badges off-limits to anyone who didn't do the bugged base raids.
