Quote:Disagree, at least with the Witches. Those are, IMO, the worst of the lot. They are way too dry and I'm not really a fan of the characters involved, other than Nanny Ogg.I'd agree with that. IMHO The Witches series and The City Watch series are the better ones in Discworld so starting with them makes sense.
To divide the books up into the various storylines (in order of publication):
Rincewind the Wizzard
The Colour of Magic
The Light Fantastic
Sourcery
Eric
Interesting Times
The Last Continent
The Witches
Equal Rites
Wyrd Sisters
Witches Abroad
Lords and Ladies
Maskerade
Carpe Jugularum
Death
Mort
Reaper Man
Soul Music
Hogfather
Thief of Time
The Watch
Guards! Guards!
Men at Arms
Feet of Clay
Jingo
The Fifth Elephant
Night Watch
Thud!
Moist von Lipwig
Going Postal
Making Money
Miscellaneous/One Shots
Pyramids
Moving Pictures
Small Gods
The Truth
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (goes between Thief of Time and Night Watch)
Monstrous Regiment
Unseen Academicals
Edit ^ 2 - A suggested reading path. -
The first book in the Discworld series is The Colour of Magic (yes, color is intentionally misspelled. Dang Brits can't spell words good no more
).

Quote:One thing people always forget for a long-term survival place...Now put the zombie home on top of this place and we have a nice fortress.
Of course the zombie house needs just a few changes.
1. Get rid of all the sliding doors and windows except for the drawbridge.
2. Where the hell is the concrete moat? Two of them in fact. One around the house itself and another just outside the property walls with another drawbridge.
3. Double the height and thickness of the property walls, and put a third floor on the house. And add some ramparts like Castles have.
4. The roof should have room for Windmills and solar panels for power, a helipad, and greehouse for growing plants.
5. Wherever the place is located it should have an indoor well sunk for a secure fresh water supply.
Salt.
Plain ol' iodized salt. Useful for cooking and preservation of both vegetables and meats as well as being necessary for survival. Also makes a handy currency if needed. Throw in a couple 50 gallon drums of the stuff and you'd be well set. Maybe get one drum of unrefined sea salt for variety and micronutrient need. -
Tonight's ep more than made up for last week's...lackluster...episode.
Between the Little Mushroom People From Nova Scotia, Scott the Dick, and the various traditions involved in a Canadian wedding...just fun. The non-Terrence & Phillip Canadian episodes tend to be pretty funny, IMO. -
Quote:Sticking the food in the stasis pod would preserve it as-is. Namely, no freezer burn or post-defrosting sogginess. It appears to be a perfect preservation, unlike what tends to happen to vegetables when frozen in a method slower than flash-freezing.That makes as much sense as using snow making machines in Antarctica.
Why waste resources on life support keeping a stasis pod active to freeze food in when the same effect can be achieved by turning off life support in a storage room that can hold several hundred times more perishable supplies. -
Quote:Problem with that is that Hulk will eventually hit something or be grabbed up by a gravitational field and he'll jump back to Earth even more honked off.
All that is needed to defeat Hulk is send him flying out of the solar system using telekinesis, wormholes, or brute strength to be able to throw him.
I don't really agree with the notion that the Wulfgar & Drizz't vs Icingdeath was that bad of a fight in terms of twinkdom. It was a simple matter of logic to defeat the foe.
The dragon lives in a cave in it's preferred environment? Namely, an ice cave. Said ice cave will most likely have icicles. Use said environment against the creature. While the dragon will be immune/highly resistant to ice attacks, it is not so much immune to a giant icicle impaling it. They fought smart, which is generally the accepted method of things in D&D. As Jeff said in an episode of American Dad, they always put in a way to win these things.
People expect less deus ex machina in comics and more with the hitting each other in the face. When you have two beings of vastly differing power levels, the usage of said DEMs becomes more apparent, even though they are basically the same. -
Quote:All zombie homes should have a roof access. Along with a retractable ladder that's only accessible from said roof or from a hidden access panel that requires either palm or retinal scan to activate. You could always go up to the roof if you needed sunlight. Once I finished making the escape tunnel I wouldn't be trapped either.
The escape tunnel should exit at least a half-mile from the home's location. Preferably in a wooded area. The exit tunnel should be collapsable and/or have a series of walls that raise from the flooring to maximize time from people following. Gates will open only with combined motion and thermal signatures. Motion without thermal signature will not permit the gate to open.
Quote:Pft. We all know that when the zombies come and the doors come down, there will be one zombie who gets inside before the lumbering doors can close. The people inside will kill it, but not before one of them unwittingly is scraped and infected. -
Well, that is a cliffhanger that they could possibly bring the series back, should they want to try again. Very melancholic though.
Though one thing that apparently escaped mention or even consideration...doubling up in a single pod. Those pods were pretty darn big. Two of the smaller people, I would suggest Wray and Park, could fit into a single capsule. It would be cozy, but possible. It's not like the tubes are doing anything in particular other than freezing them. There's no IVs or gas masks or anything even touching the occupants that would suggest they are only capable of holding a single person. Heck, they probably could've even put those tubs of perishable food in with a person and have them edible on the other side. -

I want one...
Of course, it would also double for alien invasions, meteor strikes, rogue herds of ferrets, and the tax man. -
It was at least four years ago, probably longer, but I'm not sure. Finding single charges in years of statement pages is not something I'd rather do. And since I'm not sure what card it was, I'd have to go through them all.

Quote:I'd just like to log in to see my Station account and actually find out what credit card I used on it. >.<Yes. Things are worse. And no word from Sony on why.
If I could access my account, I'd have canceled it by now. (I was planning on doing that before the downtime, but I had been giving them a chance to amaze me with information on new updates. They amazed me, but not in the good way.) -

Quote:So, clearly I have something wrong with me, when one of my first thoughts is:
"Ears down = relaxed? But in the cat world ears down = scared/angry/upset."
Depends on which "down" you are talking. Folded back and down? Ya, that's scared/mad/whatever.
Limp and down but still facing front? For my cats, that's pretty relaxed.
Haven't actually watched the video so dunno if they are talking the back and down or the limp & front facing. -
Quote:By putting the power supply at the bottom, I have all the cabling, including the remainder of the a) keyboard cable, b) monitor cable, c) ethernet cable, d) speaker cord, e) power strip with all the power cords hooking in, and all the other miscellaneous cords that drape down would be covering the vent hole. Plus, since heat goes up, I would rather the PSU vent above the video card than below it. As well as the tendency of dust and other outside objects to settle downward rather than upward. Not following you here. The PSU should be venting out the back of the case. The only cable within 6" of my PSU fan is the power cord which is TO THE SIDE of the fan and therefore not blocking it in any way.
Seriously, having the power supply at the bottom of the case is a better design. That's why it's steadily becoming more common.
Look, I'm not arguing about it. Top mounted supplies are the only things that will work for me based upon my situation and placement. All of my towers have been top mounted and have worked just fine (still have a full tower Pentium Pro 200 that works just fine). I see no real reason to change and would have to alter my current setup to accomodate a bottom mounted one. -
Quote:Sorry, but hair that curly on an adult female is too, well...childish...looking to me. Astrid was always kinda just...there. Didn't really pay that much attention to her as she was pretty much just Walter's foil/patsy/gopher/etc. I just happen to prefer straighter hair or only slightly curled (never could stand perms either).Astrid with curly hair is very attractive.
Great finale. Loved how they wrapped things up. The sheer contempt that the two Walters have for each other was just palpable. Amazing how John Noble pulled that off.
And I agree, Fringe is quite underappreciated. Its one of the few shows out there with some balls, that actually takes some risks, and is constantly monkeying with its status quo. I can't wait for next season. -
Neat episode and really good cliffhanger.
Thoughts...
Astrid with straight hair is very attractive.
John Noble is a damn good actor. Goes from playing an apparent stroke victim to an amoral sociopath.
Piter de Vries as a nutball terrorist.
Ella(?) caught me by surprise. Thought it was someone impersonating Olivia at first.
Olivia as an out-and-out teke. At first, thought it was someone wearing some form of optical camoflauge.
And finally, we get the classic paradox in sending something back in time. No one actually "made" it. It just always was. -
In roughly 10+ years of comps sitting on the floor, static electricity has never been an issue. Besides, I'd rather the PSU fan be venting to open air than having it vent under all the cabling and such.
-
Case sits on carpet. No real desire to build a shelf system. It's a basement level room though, so less heat that way.

Quote:If it could be hooked up to the nerves in the ear, might make a good prosthetic for those who are deaf through ear damage.Agreed. I'd also note that if it works I could imagine some potential usages in the medical field (potentially as a communication tool for people with disabilities) so making it as an entertainment device may provide the funding for other useful applications.
Plus they are cool.

Quote:Working on the assumption that one can have the choice between 2 and 3D. I didn't.Good, not great. The 3D adds virtually nothing; save a few bucks and see it 2D. Special effects: very good. Destroyer: very cool. Loki: good. Hemsworth was very good as was Hopkins (as always). Idris Elba is always supercool and awesome. Portman's character and story didn't really do it for me nor did the chemistry between her character and Thor. The Asgard stuff was much better than the Earth portions, but it is a nice set up for future Marvel stuff.
7-ish.
Found the 3D to be really distracting. Not just the glasses, but the 3D itself. It's not bad 3D, just...I don't know. Didn't help that the 3D centric scenes were pretty visually dark.
Kept thinking that was Hawkeye up in the crane, but don't know enough about archers in the Marvelverse to know for sure.
Liked the semi-running joke about Thor getting KO'd. Especially his reactions.
I knew Sif, Heimdal, the Rainbow Bridge, Frigg(a) (dunno why, but kept thinking that was Hild for some reason) from the myths, but could not place the Cary Elwes-lookalike and the oddly placed Asian dude. Kinda disappointed I didn't see a Freya anywhere.
Liked how they showed what the Asgardians consider to be Yggdrasil in the credits. That was neat. -
Quote:That was the second time they killed off Osama.Think they already killed off Osama. Almost put down Obama. Their names are too close together. Osama saved America from an invasion of New Jerseyians or however you call them and some soldiers kill Osama after the threat has been taken care of.
The first was the episode the boys went to Afghanistan. Cartman is pulling Bugs Bunny-esque pranks on him when a stick of dynamite goes off. He gets that classic blackened, teeth-falling out expression. A trooper comes up and pops him in the head saying, "I got him! I got him!".
So ya, they've killed him twice. -
High end program? Nah. I don't do anything like that. Like I said, the most I'd probably do is buy a copy of Poser and just play around with it, if that.
I'm also looking at cases. I want something that looks neat. LEDs, lotsa fans, the whole bit. Looking at the Smilodon cases in particular. The only requirement, really, is that it have a top-mounted power supply, since my comp sits on the floor and don't want the heat to build up there. -
Quote:People need to consider the "We're looking into it..." in the same vein as when your parents told you, "We'll see..." when you were a kid. When, *if* solo/small group Incarnate content gets here, then I'll be happy. Thrilled. Delighted even. Until then, well, if you hold what's "being considered for implementation" in one hand, and rummage in the litter box with the other, guess which one fills up first?
In the meantime, solo and small group players are graciously permitted to farm Moss Snakes or learn to change their playstyle to City of Farmville.
Sometimes you got what you wanted, most of the time, they were waiting for you to forget about whatever it was.

I expected a bin Laden death episode this week. Announced on Sunday night? Iirc, that's enough time for them to get an ep ready.
