  1. I'm usually looking for something that's soloable (why does everyone thing putting AVs in the arc makes them good?) and short (same deal - long does not automatically mean good). Some times I'll do an arc of a couple missions, but I generally prefer shorter stuff.

I'll usually start out looking at things that are highly rated, but only if they have a number of votes - the one rating 5 star I figure are generally from their friends they had test them.

I'll also look at the lower rated stuff with few or no votes. Also, I'm partial to funny stuff.
  2. Looks better every time - grats, CH!
  3. That many gift artsies in one fell swoop - congrats! I think that's a new record.
  4. In the $200-ish range, there are a few possibilities, with a lot being in the 19" size.

Here's on from Samsung for $180 at NewEgg. Response time is 2ms and resolution 1920x1080 widescreen, 21.5" screen. I'm quite happy with my Samsung, but haven't seen this one in person.

Here is one from Asus that's a 23" with a 2ms response time and will run 1920x1080.

If you'd prefer 1680x1050 there are more options available.

As for dual monitors, a number of single video cards have more than one DVI connection available, so could run more than one monitor. If you want a dual monitor for gaming on one and info on another there are sites on the Net that will give you some great information on that. If you want to go all out, you can get three monitors for the mega-widescreen acting as one virtual monitor.

    Omg hai!

Welcome back to the fold, FF!
  6. I looked around a bit, and you might see if you can find this HP Pavilion or something along those lines. I believe it's in your price range, and has some upgrade-ability.

I'd definitely see about upgrading the power supply on that, though.
  7. IMO, definitely get Win 7 over Vista, and 4 Gb Ram for sure.

I'd try to get the best motherboard and processor you can with integrated graphics, and then save up some money for a dedicated vid card to install later on. As you go along you can upgrade certain parts at a time without needing a whole new system. That will mean steering clear of the smallest cases, if you can. If not, just do as good as your budget allows, and know you're going to have to keep the game settings down on the lower end of things.
  8. Muon,

I recently got a Samsung XL2370 monitor. It's a 23" and runs 1920x1080 widescreen, and when I bought it at Best Buy it had recently dropped thirty bucks or so. It's still in the upper $200's, so if your budget is less than that for a monitor, let me know - I have been doing a lot of looking lately, so probably stumbled across something in that range.

For inexpensive speakers, try these Altec Lansing ones. Well rated, and around $21.00.
  9. Try going to your options when in-game, and go to the Graphics and Audio tab.

When there, go part way down in the Advanced Graphics Settings section, and look for a setting called Mouse Cursors. Try setting that to Compatibility Mode instead of Color, and see what that does for you.

If it does, then when the patch currently on test goes live, you might try switching back and seeing if that takes care of it.

I see Jeremy already posted this. I saw the post during beta testing for i-17, so it may be in one of those sections of the forums yet. Purportedly, adding that tag to your target line in your shortcut should do something for a SLI setup. Just add it ( -slifbos) at the end, being sure you have a space before it.

I'm using an ATI 5870 on my main gaming system, and nothing else of mine has a SLI setup, so I'm not sure how effective it may be.
  11. XP will only see about 3.25 Gb Ram, but that extra will sure help, and is a relatively inexpensive upgrade.

There is an unofficial tweak to the target path that may help with SLI - I'm running an ATI card, so I'm not sure how well it runs, though. But it was posted by The Television, so if you do decide to SLI it, I'd definitely try that.

As for the 285/295 vs the 400 series, I'd go with the 400's if you can afford it. You could get one card, and plan for a second in SLI to be added later. Just make sure your power supply can handle the things, and you case will be able to fit one in. These latest cards and biiig!

I'm scorching along with the new 5870, and I am not disappointed! Thanks again, everyone!

    Congrats!

I'm loving mine, as well. Everything ultra is maxed, but the AO off, and I'm purring along like nobody's business.

Make sure you have the 10.4 drivers going, and yours should rock.

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=141370

I also got similar errors in Champions Online, and there were a few threads on their boards about it (and Googling just now I found there were a few on the Star Trek Online boards too).

None of the file verification or deleting checksum advice I got did anything, because the files aren't actually corrupt (at least mine weren't). As far as I can tell, this may be a disk read problem, or some kind of hardware conflict I couldn't figure out. One thing I can tell you is that the hard drive I was using eventually crapped out, but it was a long time afterward.

For me, rebooting solved the issue temporarily, although it would always come back eventually. As I said, the only thing that actually worked was formatting the drive and installing Windows 7. You might consider getting a new hard drive and using it as your C drive. Good luck.

That may have worked in your case, but we should probably start with the easiest things first, especially the free easy things. Telling them to upgrade to Win 7 and geting a new hard drive may be overkill at this point.

    ---

First off, delete the coh.checksum file in your City of Heroes game folder, and the updater will check your game files and fix anything that needs fixing.

If that doesn't do it, we can take it from there.
