Another player directed me to something that helped tweak my high-speed connection somewhat. Here's the link:

SpeedGuide

The TCP/IP optmizer (on the left side - shortcuts) program tests the connection and can help tweak it for better performance. It will also handle whatever registry changes may be warranted by itself, taking the 'oops' factor out of the equation.

1680x1050 is the next step down in widescreen (I think) to keep the ratio correct... but anything close would still be nice when enlarged to the screen.
