  1. That's some good tips. I disagree on using more than 3 colors. 2 should be considered the standard, 3 only with the third color used very sparingly, and using more than 3 colors only in very special circumstances where the creator knows exactly what he's doing.

I also notice your "bored" example breaks your "no bleed" rule. I hate bleeding colors too. Looking at Ms. Liberty makes me shake my head.

However all your other tips are just great. The costumes you used as examples are very, very well done and you obviously have a very good eye.

Costume creation in this game is a mini-game unto itself. Now if only I had a dollar for every obviously-color-blind person I encounter in the game, I could retire in comfort.
  2. Thread stretching is a disease. Knock it out!
  3. Castle says "character" not "toon". I knew there was something I liked about that guy!

He kills farmers (and I presume badgers) too. Yep, I definately like him!
  4. So the game's population is up 7% thanks to PvE content. Like PvPers say, PWND.
  5. I'd be very unimpressed if the Epic Villains are Kheldians. Unless they make them substantially different somehow. Otherwise, it's one big "meh!"
  6. *SIGH!*
Well I'm happy for everyone who likes it. It's a bit much if you ask me, I've been seeing Invasions even when the event isn't on, but hey, sometimes you have to get along to go along.

Here's where being on a lower populated server pays off.
  7. The problem with Cobra Strike in this build is MA/SR is a very tight build. I tried it, was impressed with its ability to stun Bosses, but at the end of the day I just didn't need to be stunning Bosses when I could be using my heavy-hitters to simply get rid of them altogether (this is purely just playstyle preference). Also, I was very unimpressed with Cobra Strike in PvP.

For my own build, I took the power pick and slots and put them into getting one more damaging attack out of my primary. If I dropped the Fighting Pool, I could fit CS in. But the Fighting Pool is so absolutely godly on SR it's ridiculous and I know I couldn't play without it. So in the final analysis, for me and my playstyle, Fighting Pool > Cobra Strike.
  8. Stan and *stares at Crawler's avatar* yeah. Hehehe. Yeah.
  9. So barring ToHit buffs (and level differences of +5 and greater), everything is floored with 45% Defense (PvP being its own animal, as usual). And the huge amount of Defense in Elude is pretty much wasted, with the same exceptions as above (ie, in the presence of ToHit buffs, it isn't wasted).

Excellent answer as always Arcanaville! I'm not a numbers person so I'm always struggling to understand these things.
  10. 25 Rikti Bombs at level 7 or less? Wow, that would be like pulling teeth. You do nothing to them at that level.
  11. Isn't it the case that the only thing you floor with 45% Defense is an even con Minion? What if you go up against, say, a +4 Minion (a not uncommon occurance in my gameplay)? Or an Archvillain? If Defense in excess of 45% is wasted in PvE, why does the huge amount of Defense in Elude seem to help so much (even with IOs)? Perhaps the developers know that defense in excess of 45% is not wasted?
  12. You make it sound so cool! I deleted a Fire/Dark but after reading this guide I can see where I made some build mistakes. Might be worth another go at some point. Corruptors are great on paper, I really want to get into them.
  13. Good guide. I love Doms but Ice/Ice is just my least favorite combo so far. The Endurance issues just make me want to pull my hair out. It's a perfectly good Dom though, and I do plan to level an Ice/Ice up to at least 32, but it's the last one on my play schedule.

    So Ice/Ice I'll see you in...2009? lol
  14. It should be required reading. It's that good. It inspired me to do the first leading I've ever done in this game. I'm still a soloer/follower at heart so I don't lead much, but when I do this guide is of great help.
  15. That's one well-formatted guide!

Well I come from a very different school of Domination.

Immobilizes: I see neophyte Dominators get themselves killed all the time with Immobilizes (and I've been the victim back when I took such powers). A level 8 Dominator using Crushing Field on a team is a dead Dominator. Taking the single target Immobilize for PvE is just about worthless. If you really want Immobilizes, let Singularity spam those out for you. You really don't need to do it yourself.

Total Focus vs. Propel: Sure, Propel is a fun power. But with an entire secondary of attacks, what do Dominators need this one for? It's meant for Controllers who need the attack and have Containment to double its damage justifying its long, long activation/animation time. Why take Total Focus instead? Damage: Total Focus: 148 Propel: 71 Yes, more than twice the damage. The two aren't even in the same ballpark. TF = great, Propel = junk (for Doms; fun, but junk) Being in melee isn't really an issue for Doms. Doms are a melee Archetype.

The tone you have towards those with different build and playstyle philosophies really should be addressed. You call anyone with a different viewpoint a "weak player" and imply they don't know what they're doing. This is unnecessary and frankly makes you look a bit petty. Notice how on my notes above I address the facts and not the person? You should do the same.

You come more from a Controller (emphasis on primary, secondary mostly used soloing) school of Dominator technique and I respect that. For myself I am much more scrappy with my Doms (emphasis on balance between primary and secondary, solo or teamed) and I feel as designed the Archetype is more at home with that approach (the secondary builds Domination much faster than the primary for example).

But these are all just playstyle differences at the end of the day. The guide is a good guide for those who want a more Controllery approach to Dominators. It's very well formatted and your numbers are accurate. I may write a Grav/Ener guide myself after I get my G/E Dom to 50 to clarify my own views on the combo. This guide certainly sets a very good standard.
  16. Love 'em! Using the one with a black border as my background right now and it looks great!
  17. Approval? Someone has to approve these things? And what was the latest flap over City Scoop? I'm so clueless! *cries and runs away*

Your link goes to an antiques page. Fixed it.
  19. Energy Aura is lots of fun. I even take it into PvP on occaision. At Siren's Call level, the Accuracy of your opponents isn't completely out of hand like in the 40+ game and it's surprising how many of your opponents won't see you coming since many builds haven't gotten a +Perception yet (though many do, but you're not a Stalker so it doesn't really matter).

Good guide. I disagree on the attack slotting a bit. It's more efficient to have 3 Damage and 1 Recharge from a Damage-per-Endurance perspective, something Brutes need to keep in mind (even Energy Brutes). 3 Damage 2 Endurance would be even better, but Energy Brutes are filthy rich with Endurance compared to most other Brutes so I myself went with 3 Damage 1 Recharge 1 Endurance (dropping the Endurace to have a second Accuracy if I'm building for PvP).

My Energy Brute has an Energy Melee primary but I will roll an Electric/Energy someday as it's thematically appropriate and allows you to play like a support sapper class when the drains of the attacks are added to the drain of Energy Aura.

In PvE Energy based attacks against you are nearly futile. The Rikti will quickly become one of your favorite enemy groups to face because of this (they use tons of Energy attacks).

    Keep on Brutin' Energy Brutes.
  20. Fascinating! Just 7% would do it. I guess that's why people see such a dramatic improvement when they pick up Weave and/or Maneuvers on a SR or EA, because those "solve" the "problem" of the Defense sets.

It might be a good course of action for SR and EA to get a buff of at least half of that to help it out. Oh heck, the whole 7%, why not? Regen can pick useful things like Tough up too (and it doesn't even "need" it) to become even more uber.

    Thanks for the info!

BTW, do you think Regen is in need of further nerfing, or is it more a matter of buffing the underperforming sets to bring them into line with it?
  21. How much Defense would SR need to provide so that SR performs above the 3 minion mortality line? How much would it need to be equal to Regeneration?
  22. *Tongue hangs out looking at those numbers*

Maybe I'm not crazy after all. I don't think I'll be able to fit CJ and Maneuvers in though (but that's only what, 6% Defense between them?)
  23. Yeah, like the original post says Weave tends to get buried underneath all the mitigation the heals in regen provide. But builds are a very personal thing, and if concept calls for something, or you have something you truly feel helps, well who is anyone to argue? So long as you're having fun.

Oh, did I mention I'm putting Tough and Weave on a Dominator? Oh, yeah! I should end up with a nice mini Energy Aura for my Dom when combined with Black Scorpion's Patron Shield. Sheesh! What is it with me and Defense?
  24. Wether EA was designed specifically that way or not, I give the devs the benefit of the doubt, even if it is "accidental genious".

I find I'm really drawn to the "pure" sets, as you put it. Or "gimpy". A rose by any other name... PvE side I don't miss a heal in SR (I'm undecided on EA, but with its bigger hole, it might be a good course to follow). And I find the set to have a very natural feel to it compared to the others (great for natural concepts). If it underperforms in PvP, I really don't care much. Makes any wins for a SR there all the sweeter. Even if they're few.

PvE side, I find myself, 9 times out of 10 surving team wipes with SR. Prior to level 35 or so however, that very much wasn't the case. SR is one painful level up through those very faceplanty times. Post 35 it's been cake. Faceplants have fast become a rarity. The one thing I have trouble with anymore is Toxic. But then who doesn't (well, Regen I guess lol).

Anyway I look forward to much more from Starsman and Arcanaville. You two are increasing my understanding of this game all the time. In fact just yesterday I was able to give someone SR and Regen advice based on this very thread (don't take Weave on Regen, do take Weave on SR, take Tough on both).

I look forward to all future developments.
