  1. I think the OP's builds have exactly one problem. While not a big one, it still does bother me from a min/max perspective. Many of the sets you've six slotted provide bonuses that aren't very useful as their final ones. Like the purples, the 5% Toxic Resistance is nothing. When you need it, it won't be enough. When you don't need it, you won't notice it. Just like the last two bonuses of LotG, I don't even remember what they are but I do know they're close to being useless.

Removing those enhancements would free some slots for better purposes.
  2. I'm actually kind of happy they did this. So far I've only had the time and motivation to get an alpha enhancement on three of my characters. It would make me feel I should play more if I could get my very rare as fast as I could get shards, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Can't speak for anyone else, but I like to keep things casual in the sense of time spent gaming.
  3. Because there is no correct answer for marketeering vs. farming or buy it now vs. waiting, I'll just drop in my reasonings...

I don't particularly enjoy marketeering. I don't find it entertaining in the way smashing bad guys is, but, truth be told, I don't really dislike it either. Marketeering is still my number one option, though, because as much as I like smashing bad guys, I can't stand farming or grinding. It's boring going around the exact same map against the exact same bad guys you cherry picked so that they provide next to no resistance. Marketeering gets me around this, 5 to 10 minutes at the start or at the end of my playing session and I get my monies while being able to skip essentially all the "dumb" stuff you have to do in order to earn influence.

Marketeering is also a very nice way of earning inf for lazy people like me. You can check your one and only marketeer every two days and still make a very respectable bunch of influence. I don't even bother trying to flip stuff because crafting is much easier and also gets me absurd profits. Someone wants to pay me 10mil so that I craft their enhancement? Deal!

Waiting for stuff to come by is something I often do. I'm a quite patient person and I also hate "throwing money away", so waiting for bids is my way of doing it. I don't usually bid creep, I just bid around 60-75% of the last five, or put just above the lowest one of them if it has been significantly lower than the others. This usually gets me my stuff in few days or a week at most which I don't think is at all unreasonable. I do just buy stuff, too. If it costs less than ten million and I'm planning on using it myself, I might just as well buy it right now. After all, I'm at most saving a few million which is often very close to nothing when comparing against the price of the full build.

Waiting for bids also has another good effect. I don't have to craft my whole build at once, it does get a bit tedious when you're crafting 50+ different IOs in a row, especially if you have 20 recipes which are lacking that one component because there are so few for sale or you just don't want to spend that much on common salvage.

As for hating crafting, I don't really understand it unless you really have an exorbitant amount of influence stashed away. If you bought your recipe "right nao", surely you can spend a few million or a few hundred thousand to buy your salvage "right nao", too. If you didn't buy it "right nao" then surely you can wait an hour more to get your salvage. It takes all of half a minute to go craft a single IO from places like Steel Canyon WW or Cap BM. That half a minute of crafting could save you an hour of farming. Even if it saved you 15 minutes of farming, multiply that with however many IOs you're using for your build and the time saved becomes quite significant.
  4. Elec/Shield is a great AoE lawnmower, but it's a terrible waste if you're not going to use anything other than SC/LR. I use one of those plus Thunder Strike and Ball Lightning on each spawn, mop it up and move on to next one. That way I always have one of them up and it takes me not too long to clear a spawn of minions/lieutenants.

Most of my characters take around 100 hours to reach 50, my leveling is mostly done by TFs so I try to do a TF every time I have time to play. This also means I rarely bother to play at all if I have less than two hours available. And yes, I think that half an hour to an hour spent crafting is a drop in the bucket compared to those 100 hours. If I was leveling slower, I would mind it even less.

Wrong. I spend maybe 5-7 hours a week playing CoH. That's one to three TFs if I'm lucky, some duoing with a friend if TFs aren't available. This is why I prefer the market: I don't have to spend much time playing the game in order to get powerful characters I enjoy much more than the baseliners.

5 market cycles are very likely >> 5 consecutive real time evenings for most people.
I guess better wording would have been "1 market cycle = empty time between two play sessions". Once you get a grasp of the market you can reliably put bids high enough to get you the items you want in one market cycle but low enough to still save a bunch of inf. Besides, as the quality of the items progresses, you should be ready to wait more to get the bargains.

I usually check the market every day or every two days. That takes me about 10 minutes. As for actually playing the game, that's what I do during weekends when I don't have anything urgent going on. You know, studying does take quite a bit of time especially when you have your final exams approaching.

Could be. I'm no business expert, I have never actually even studied economics, but I do have some logic and a bit of common sense in my head. Those two tell me that if you want top quality stuff, right now, ready to use it's going to cost you more than being happy good stuff, soon or a bit later and assembling it yourself.

I think you and I have a very different definition of taking advantage of someone/something, at least when we come to where we cross the border to It's Morally Wrong.

In my opinion, taking advantage of someone is only wrong when they're in a position where they don't have any other options. Here we do have those, people can wait just like I did and get a bargain, but they choose not to. The only thing I'm taking advantage of is people's willingness to pay me in order that I wait so that they don't have to, making me an opportunist rather than a Bad Person. In my opinion.

I read things like this and can only wonder. Do people really think that five market cycles, which often equates to five nights, is too much to kit out their favourite character with items more powerful than they will ever need? In any other game, you're lucky if you can get one upgrade every few days once you reach the top level. Once you start reaching the top gear, you're very lucky if you can get an upgrade every week.

If people really have to have everything right now, I don't think they have the right to complain that it costs a lot. Typically, even in real life, to get stuff express delivered costs more than waiting for a bit longer.

    Quote:
Its also no surprise people pay the prices they have to for crafted any other choice is incredibly inefficient.
Not all people find it inefficient. Compared to just about any other MMORPG I find it extremely efficient. Besides, salvage is rarely a problem. If the recipe costs 20 million, what does it matter if you throw a few hundred thousand away to get the salvage for it right now? We are talking of a few hundred thousand at most when dealing with salvage savings, which is not enough to bother, in my opinion. Someone might be even more patient than I am, though.

What is a surprise is people still stick with a game that sticks such a cowpie in their faces.
Huh? Compared to any other game we have it easy here. Characters easily powerful enough to solo most content, including stuff designed for teams? Check. Highest level "gear" available without having to commit to raiding? Check. Fast leveling? Check.

We have it so easy, they could only make the game easier by giving a bot along with each account to play for you.

So, let me get this straight...

You have observed and identified the problem which is you hating crafting and being willing to pay people absurd sums of influence to do crafting for you. And this is somehow the fault of Greedy Bad People?
  9. I still don't see the how greed only applies to "desire for excessive wealth" and not to "desire for excessive power".

I fully admit to being greedy in the sense that I want better performance and more wealth than what is needed to get by in this game, but really I don't understand how someone who is only after one of those things is not greedy. Less greedy than me, though? Possible, even likely.

Oh yeah, when do we get the announcements revealing the weekly strike task?
  11. I went out of my way to procure a dictionary definition for greed, from www.thesaurus.com

    greed (ɡriːd)

    — n
    1. excessive consumption of or desire for food; gluttony
    2. excessive desire, as for wealth or power

Bold mine. Desire for high level IOs represent excessive desire for power, the game is balanced around SOs so anything past that is excessive. Marketeering activities represent desire for wealth.

Now, eryq, because I was so kind as to produce this piece of information, maybe you could produce the next bit. What exactly is the difference in the greed attribute of wanting to 1) have a lot of inf and 2) have expensive set IOs? Is it just that you don't like people who have a lot of inf through any other means than "honest work" like farming?

I'm not really interested in what you think, I'm more interested in why you think what you think, so I'll repeat my question. How is wanting anything special (= better than SOs) to make your character better than others or what the game requires you to be not greedy? What's the great distinction between having a lot of inf and expensive sets?

It's a bit funny when you actively skip awkward questions, as well as rationalizing buying items not being greedy because they're for use. Uh, it's not greedy because that's how you'd like the world to work? Well, welcome to reality, it doesn't always work like you'd like it to do.
  13. Achilles' Heel proc. As close to 95% Rech as you can get, some Accuracy (50% seems fine). Getting useful set bonuses on top of that is gravy.
  14. Heh, I kinda know what you mean. My SD/DM Tank is definitely awesome.

Then again, a lot of characters can be awesome in a different way. My Elec/SD Scrapper, for example, can put out insane AoE, something the SD/DM can't.
  15. Got my Earth/Fire Domi up to 28, not quite my goal but didn't really have too much time to play. Also got my Inv/Kin tank from level 1 to 22 which got me SOs.

    Quote:
I confess this is after accepting that no character I make will compare to my DM/Shield
Really? I'd say my Illu/Cold would be much more ridiculous for most content. Perma PA and soft capped S/L/E/Ranged enable me to do... A lot of stuff.
  16. I'd like to ask one thing, eryq. If I only need one Item, but I buy two at a moderate price, then sell the other one to a Random Person at a markup because Random Person has to have it exactly this darn moment, it makes me greedy but not the other person?

I still don't understand how "I want(/need) that right now!" is not greed in a game where nothing is needed.

In fact, I don't understand how wanting to have anything special in this game (badges, set IOs, multiple 50s, etc.) is nothing else but greed. It's like little girls decorating their dolls, only that the goal here is to have the best doll/most dolls around. What's that if it's not greed, because dolls, as far as I know, are not needed for any real purpose but to make you feel good?
  17. But how would that really change anything? Items would still have their perceived worth and anyone aware of that wouldn't sell it to a merchant for under that price, or buy it for much more than that.

People would just safekeep items until it was worth selling them making the vendor pretty much the same as our current market.

I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort to create a vendor like that.
  18. Asking this just out of curiosity (concerning the store idea): because market prices chosen by players isn't good, it would logically follow that devs set the prices of a store like this. How would it differ from the current A-merit and R-merit stores?

Had to? No you didn't. Had you waited, you would've got it for the "going rate", but because you "had" to have it right now, you had to pay more.
  20. I still think my proposal to balance the market is the best one: find a cure for gottahaveitrightnowitis. It's the disease that makes marketeers rich and everyone else poor, it's the disease that forces people to pay high prices and it's the disease that causes cries of despair which lure Bad People to the market.

I pretty much build all of my characters on rares. Very, very few gets purples and even then they're the cheap purple sets like confuse. I don't really use purples because often they aren't the optimal choice for a certain goal or they don't offer enough of an increase in any stat to be worth the 10x cost of a rare set.

    Quote:
Im in the 10s of billions and still fuss about spending 500mil or more for 1 recipe.
Same, that's why I get my Glad Armor uniques through A merits. It's also why I don't use purples. So why do I want to have billions? Because having that much inf enables me to complete just about any build with rares, and also get those elusive purples the very few times I want them. There's also the thing that influence is so easy to come by, I might as well get it. All I need to do is place my bucket next to WW and empty it every day.

I do it every time I need to get sales badges on an alt.
And exactly what does that prove? Yep, people are lazy. If they bothered to take a look at the prices, saw there was a flipper at work, they could've got their stuff for whatever the flipper paid + 1 inf. If everyone was not lazy this wouldn't be possible. Already two marketeers competing on an item lowers prices.

    Quote:
Seeing as we are talking about faith here, where is your proof that flipping stabilizes prices ?
Read my post again. Oh wait, you won't so I'll just say it again in short sentences this time. We have flipper A. We also have flipper B. Flipper A buys stuff for 1000 inf and puts them for sale at 4500 inf. Lazy people buy his stuff for 5k. Flipper B notices A's niche. Flipper B starts buying stuff for 1100 inf and puts them for sale at 4200 inf. People still buy his stuff for 5000. Flipper A notices someone intruding his niche. He starts buying stuff for 1500 inf and putting them up for sale at 3.9k. People now start buying stuff for 4000 inf because it's a nice and easy number.

This goes on and on for a while. Buy price approaches sell price. If continued ad infinitum, buy price = sell price making profit flipping impossible. Because flippers A and B have both set their minimum bet at close to their sell price, people always make at least that much when selling their item. Because flippers A and B produce demand, supply is increased: people no longer delete that stuff because it's worth something. Because flippers A and B compete for the lowest listing price, people never have to pay more than that much to get it.

Understand or do I need to make it even more simple?

    Quote:
Just how much does it stabilize prices ?
I can't give you a number here, but with most items, prices will continue stabilizing for as long as more than one people try to work the same niche. They'll often stop when it's no longer profitable, but come back when it is again. The bottom line is that the difference between minimum and maximum prices for that item becomes smaller, i.e. price spikes are reduced.

    Quote:
You have no proof of this. Its an article of faith for you. I doubt you could even define what constitutes a more stable price or the long run let alone that flipping makes it happen.
I don't know if you've ever heard of the burden of proof, but it was you who claimed marketeering does not stabilize prices, so it's actually up to you to prove it. As for what constitutes a stable price, I'd say that's a price range where the difference between maximum and minimum price is not too big. I don't know how much "not too big" is, but I'd say maximum is not more than 1/3 more than the minimum for medium priced items.

    Quote:
You have managed to go from flipping be able to create short term price spikes to it preventing them. Well done. What are you going for next ? Defining anything that causes prices to be more volatile as not being flipping ?
Read again. Flipping raises prices slightly (not wildly = not a spike) but also lowers the maximum price, effectively reducing the range of prices making the item more stable.

    Quote:
Its pretty obvious that what irks you is when people challenge your tenets of faith.
No. What irks me is when people challenge what I call logic with tenets of faith. Give me something more than "this works like this done, you wrong" and I might consider you actually don't work on tenets of faith. You know, logical reasoning might be in order.

P.S. I'm not impervious to logic, if you can convince me with logic that flippers do not stabilize prices, I'll admit to being wrong.
