Quote:That depends a lot on the situation. If it was a rare phenomenon and about the squad I'm in charge of I wouldn't put up with it because they are under my authority due to the strict rank hierarchy. However, if multiple people complained about not understanding what I was on about the only logical step would be to go back to the source of the stuff they don't understand (me) and evaluate if it might also be the source of confusion. That is why I've taken up the habit of always asking if anything was left unclear so that I might clarify it before it becomes a problem. As an officer I'm sure you wouldn’t put up with people acting like this towards you if they don’t understand something.
Sometimes it can be as simple as ordering people to do something they haven't been trained for yet, having them do something with insufficient equipment, or even ordering something that outright cannot be accomplished. For example, ordering four people to separate into three pairs. I know I'm not infallible, and I do let lower-ranking people correct me because it also lends to a mutual trust based relationship: I know they are up to the task if they spot my mistakes, and they know I'm not some self-righteous idiot who will do things his way even if it is stupid just because it was my idea and I'm of higher rank. It can be a slippery slope, but so far this has worked very well.
If, on the other hand, it was random people outside the rank based hierarchy what do you think I should do? My authority as an officer compels no civilians outside a war, so the only thing I can do is to evaluate my own propositions and see if they are presented unclearly or if they don't even make any sense.
Quote:From my experience in RL, if people don’t understand something, they simply asked. If people said half the stuff to most people like they did on this post, some people probably would have put them in the hospital long time ago. Others probably would have given them the pink slip, while others probably would brush them off and if they approached again, probably would knock them on their butt. Or in my case if they kept pushing the issue after I dismiss it and became aggressive with it, I'd mace the crap out of them then call the police. Online, it's different it seems. Online, people seem to get a lot bolder, hiding behind the screen smug knowing they can’t be touched.
There is a saying I really like for this occasion: "a man is only worth his words, and when he runs out of them, he runs out of his worth". Very badly translated, and please don't get fixated on it being gender specific
Quote:But, I made a decision; I'm not even going to let it bother me anymore. I'm going to continue to post, I’m going to continue to write, and if they get disrespectful, I am not even going to bother even addressing it to them I'm just going to keep track and report them. If they come with some bootleg “help”, ignored and reported. If they keep at it, I will report them going up the chain. First it will be ignore. Then, it will be going to those in charge, then to the people in charge of those people and so and so even if I go as far up as the owners and corporate office etc.
P.S. I edited this so many times it is likely to contain sentences that don't work... -
You know, I think people really are being rather reasonable in this thread. Then again, as an army officer I have seen what abuse really means, and I do have a thick skin, so my perspective may be a bit twisted.
Quote:As for that, you aren't expected to completely understand everyone, but I think the main problem here is that most people can't and don't want to try to understand you because of the excessive amount of work involved, which in turn causes you to react VERY defensively. From my training and experience I know that if I don't bother taking the time to make my orders (or in the case of these boards, my post) clear enough to be understood the first time, I can't expect anyone to take the time to run through them again and again to try and understand. How is it I'm expected to understand everyone but none even bother giving a sliver to time to understand me?
Reading through your own texts helps a lot as does correcting errors you've made. People in general are lazy (I know I am), and don't bother correcting stuff unless it really needs to be fixed. If you pay attention to what you're writing it is easy to tell apart trolls and people who genuinely can't understand you. -
From what I've always understood, constructive criticism never meant that it needed to tell something had good in it, nor does it need to have anything bad in it. What it needs to have in it is a suggestion on how to improve. For example "this and that about your post was bad/good, but it could be better if you did this or that". Bolded the part relevant to being constructive.
Quote:Here online words is words, there is no pace, there is no saying it again as they words will still be there, and if if needs a read over once more it is possible even without the other person needing to repeat.
Quote:See, you say when given the same advice I was being oversensative, yet, when that same advice is passed on from me, to someone else, it's different story.
There is a difference between "a single or a few grammar errors" and "actually really hard to read". It just might be the reason. I have seen even in this thread that you are capable of producing posts that are legible so I can't for the life of me understand why you chose to raise hell about this instead of just fixing the OP... -
I prefer most of the new content because it's shorter than the old stuff. New TFs being ~1 hour long most of the time actually allows me to do them during the week and on the whim instead of including them in a schedule.
That said, I wouldn't mind doing longer TFs if they were varied as long as they weren't longer than 2.5* hours on average. Long end-game raids are the reason I don't really play the traditional MMOs, there is just pretty much no way for me to justify playing 4-5 hours worth of one raid in a row.
*based on no actual evidence or research, but 2.5 hours sounds like a window I could devote to a TF on a weekend -
Check out the thread in my sig for a few builds. I'll PM you my current build later if you want, don't have it posted anywhere I think and it is stored on another computer.
-
I don't know where you buy your books, but I wouldn't consider your OP "standard format literature". I'd like to point out that not everyone on these boards have English as their primary language, so posts that are hard to read for native speakers may be outright impossible to decypher for those who are from other countries.
English is my 2nd language and I spend a lot of time keeping it at a level that allows me to read pretty much anything. Even still I get temporarily confused when people substitute words with something that sounds very similar such as of/have. -
Wouldn't mind having this as a feature.
One thing that popped into my mind, not sure if it was mentioned earlier, but if you don't want to print your builds, what about using screenshots pasted into something like MS Paint? Just cross over the IOs you already have and overwrite the save. -
Personally I think it is very rude from the OP to consider her time more valuable than ours. How else do you explain the time spent by the OP (making the post coherent) being so much more important than the time of many others who have to make the effort to both decypher and read the post just because the OP couldnt bother?
My grammar isn't perfect either and, to be honest, I'm happy if people point out my mistakes so that I can learn. Small errors don't really have an effect on the clarity of the post (which is why I don't bother making a fuss about them), but sometimes the errors cumulate into a pile that just hides the content underneath it. -
Here's something I cooked up in Mid's. It relies on Clarion or team buffs to get up to the soft cap defense + some buffer. The interesting thing is the massive self damage buffing capability, with each power having ~130% enhanced damage and the potential for another ~140% from set bonuses, Assault and perma Soul Drain it gets rather close to the damage cap for Corruptors. And that's not even touching Hybrid, I haven't been around in the game lately so I have no idea how the damage buffs from Hybrid work. There's also perma fast-snipe even without the help of Clarion so you can switch it for another Destiny buff for team content if needed.

I would guess each proc would have its own proc chance depending on the power it is slotted it.

Quote:Most sets maybe have one to three bonuses people actively shoot for (generally a combination of recharge, defense and whatever else your build can benefit from (regen, recovery, damage), but that doesn't make the rest of the bonuses automatically insignificant. Take for example Decimation, the set bonus most people want is the 6.25% recharge, but the +hp and +end are really nice as well. I won't be bothered to dig up other examples because it would most likely be a futile attempt to try and make you see other bonuses can also be useful even if you just pick them up as a by-product.eh. bonus for 5 slotting and sometimes 6 slotting are the only ones that matter.
And that's not even touching the subject of how being able to slot powers you normally can't frees up other options for slotting powers. If I can finally toss a few slots into Combat Jumping, I might be able to pick up not only the set bonuses of the IO set in CJ, but also change an IO set in another power to include a bonus I didn't previously have, such as additional global recharge from a set that has a weaker +Def bonus. -

Here's something I posted in another thread.
-Soft capped defense versus all positions provided you refresh Defensive Sweep. Cloak of Fear provides a small buffer against -Def with the -ToHit from it
-Decent global recharge
-Very high damage resistance (capped S/L/N/Psi as far as I recall) with no Resistance lower than 60% in combat. The superior tanker ATO will constantly be double stacked in combat so add 6.7% to what Mids' is showing, plus an additional 10% from Sky Splitter if you use Form of the Body
-Endurance should be manageable

Quote:1: My Illu/Cold has all of those. Agility alpha helps a lot (+def and +rech) as well as picking up Ice APP (or Mace, but Ice has the better single target blast). As a sidenote, it's not S/L or ranged defense "cap", it is the defense soft cap for most non-incarnate content.A friend of me started playing lately and is nearly 50. She was asking me about a good build for her toon but I'm struggling with Controllers must-have.
1- Should she aim for perma PA? S/L Cap? Ranged def Cap? S/L/R Cap? Is it even remotely possible to achieve everything?
2- Is Fantasme skippable? It seems to die a lot (well of course running with S0s on my brute's lvl 50 +4*8 doesnt really help), knocks stuff back and deal very unimpressive damage.
3- Whats the lingering def value on group invis and imp invis? Mids only gives the hidden value.
4- If anyone has a build I'd be glad, the only limitation is that the character must have Ice Shield and Glacia Shield, its not meant for solo.
2: I wouldn't skip it. It's damage that doesn't cost you animation time or endurance. Others already mentioned the benefits of the decoy.
3: No idea, my build doesn't use either (Arctic Fog + Stealth IO instead).
4: Will be a while until I can post my current build, the computer which houses all of my builds is currently at the shop for maintenance... -
Here's something I came up with. Won't be that great when exemplaring, but should be really nice at level 50. Tanker ATO proc will always be double stacked so add another 6.7% Res(All) and whatever you get from Form of the Body + Sky Splitter. I'd likely use Ageless as Destiny because the build seems a bit heavy on the endurance side and could use a bit more global recharge.

Here's an adaptation of what I use on my Kat/Inv. Only change was Gambler's Cut to Hack. I never felt F/C defense was that important so I skipped it in favour of more recharge (=damage). As for Destiny, pick Rebirth.

Right off the top of my head I can't think of any build that couldn't solo an even level AV without Lore pets. With a good build pretty much any build should be capable of soloing one without insps, temps or incarnate powers. When AV soloing was still hot stuff I used to run a FM/SR Scrapper with a very moderately priced build (around 150mil) who could solo most AVs under the no insps/temps rule before we had access to incarnate stuff.
As an aside, Ill/Rad is one of the big old names for AV/GM hunting, but it is not as powerful as some other high-end builds are at that. -

Quote:Not trying to be witty at all, but the only case in which there is a significant barrier is a top-end IO build, and even then most of that barrier is the knowledge needed to plan it. There really isn't that much of a difference, in my opinion, to what it was back then. Pre-ED you needed to know which were the top-end powerset combinations, get one of those to 50, and spend enough time to fill each of your carefully placed slots with HOs. Now the powerset combination holds less of an importance while carefully placing and filling your slots is the more important factor. I'd bet getting those HOs is no less of a barrier than it is to get IOs for this "most people" you speak of. At least I find it much more feasible getting IOs, because I can get them on my own schedule, not on the Hami raid schedule.I thinnk its rather funny how many people think they are so witty to find something funny. Because when the conversation is about what is/was POSSIBLE you're talking about the limits, not the run of the mill and not the suboptimal.
Getting a good IO build doesn't even require that much know-how or risk taking if you have patience, I finished my first top-end builds by getting 10-20mil daily profits playing the market with very low-risk items (uncommon IOs I bought for a few hundred thousand and sold for a few mil). Anyone can do that, it's not really that hard looking at the buy recipe -> sell finished product conversion*. Of course, without the patience needed to learn this thing in the first place, it'll be very unlikely the person has the patience to actually reach the goal of an IO build later as opposed to right now...
*I'll even give you an example: if a recipe sells for an average of 1mil (if you wait a day or two), salvage costs a few hundred thousand, crafting fee another few hundred thousand and the actual enhancement sells for 5mil, it is obvious profit if you're willing to do the "work" to find out all of this. I do agree it's a bit tedious crafting enhancements, but it is far less tedious than farming for hours on end and that tediousness rewards me with giving me powerful builds to do fun stuff with. Notice the quotation marks around the word work, I really can't consider it work spending a couple of minutes typing a few words into a search engine and doing some first grade maths. -
For the ED vs. IOs conversation, I really prefer it with IOs. They opened many alternative build strategies in addition to leveling the playing field for powerset combinations. Most of my characters are now way more powerful, due to bug fixes, buffs to powersets and most of all, improved knowledge of the game mechanics. I do miss AoEs with no target caps, though
As for the second conversation in this thread:
I think it's rather funny that people assume you are talking about a totally min/maxed super expensive build when all you did was mention the phrase "IO build". If getting an IO build made up of uncommon sets is too much of an obstacle, all that tells to me is that you aren't willing to put the slightest bit of effort in getting IOs. Just doing missions has uncommons raining on you.
Claiming that IOs are difficult to get is just ridiculous, claiming that it is difficult to maximize the benefits of the various IO set bonuses is a whole other thing. And, to be honest, there is nothing that difficult about the market that a little bit of effort and thinking wouldn't get you through. That effort might very well require you to - *gasp* - ask someone for help or actually find out about it on the internet on your own if getting help is too much for you.
As Nethergoat said, I don't think there should be any sympathy for those who claim it's too hard to get stuff in this game. For the past year I've been playing on a very limited time schedule (military service, woop) and still have managed to get billions worth of stuff just playing the game and not even touching the market for anything else but selling drops or buying stuff I'm actually intending to use. It might require some knowledge on the game, but it really isn't that hard to come by if you want to find out.
In any other environment people wouldn't have any qualms about people telling you to do something if you wanted to reach a goal, but in MMOs it seems many think it's the goal that should move to reach you. -
I'm also running a Kat/Inv who happens to be my main. I find Invuln a really nice set, good Defense with decent Resistance against most stuff (amazing S/L res) to buffer you up against (un)lucky streaks. Dull Pain combined with Rebirth takes care of all the damage recovery you might need, so the only thing I sometimes find wanting more of is exotic status protection and damage.
My live build is soft capped against S/L/E/N with one enemy in melee range, has capped S/L Resistance and runs perma DP along with the GC>GD>GC>SD attack chain that is sustainable indefinitely. Melee soft cap is reachable with one application of DA, but I pretty much only use it against F/C or -Def heavy melee foes if I don't happen to have a purple at hand.
Here's the build:

I'm 99% certain that the tanker ATO proc doesn't check whether it is placed in an AoE or not because it can proc only once per power activation, not for each target hit. As a sidenote, I don't think damage auras should be able to get it past double stacked because its duration is 20 seconds (IIRC) and it can only proc twice within that time.

Depends a bit on what I'm planning to do, really. I use level 30 common IOs as soon as they become available, but I do use lower level set IOs or uniques that will also be in my final build, such as Eradications, Steadfasts, Miracle and Numina uniques, etc., which I will slot as soon as I can. Attacks usually get 4 to 5 slots because that is well enough to frankenslot them to have decent stats while still having slots to spare for other things.
If I'm going to use Kinetic Combats in the build, all single target attacks will get 5 slots: the 4 pieces of KC that give enhancement values plus a triple from a random set that gives me acc and dam, end or rech. If I'm going to use a high level set or one that requires 6 slots to give the bonus I want (Mako, Touch of Death, etc.), the attack usually gets four slots that will be filled with four triples.
I follow the same philosophy with all my slotting while leveling. If I can't slot the set that I have planned for my final build, whether it is due to level or slot constraints, I'll just give the power fewer slots and frankenslot to get the best out of it. At lower levels it seems having two attacks well slotted gives me better returns than having 3.75% more Defense and only one well slotted attack. -
Quote:Well, to know what 10% +regen equates to in terms of HP/sec you'd need to know your regen value before adding it as well as your HP. 100% Regen means you regenerate from 0 health to full health in 240 seconds, 200% means 120 seconds, etc. Basically the function to calculate time to full hp from zero is 240/(1+RegenBuffs), where Regen Buffs are converted into decimals (10% = 0.1, 100% = 1, etc.).Okay, dropping in LOTG +7.5% is one of the best I/O decisions behind dropping in +3% def globals or theft of essence proc in Dark Regen.
What I am trying to figure out is how much more effective (if it is more effective) going for thing Like Numina Global is over using that slot in a different way elsewhere. Also, I know adding set bonuses +10% regen is good, but really what does it mean mathematically, survivability wise. That kind of stuff, what do these numbers mean.
To actually see how much HP/sec that does, means you need to divide your Health (including any Health Buffs) by the time it takes to regenerate that much, so, BaseHealth(1+HPBuffs)/(240/(1+RegenBuffs)) = BaseHealth(1+HPBuffs)*(1+Regen Buffs)/240. Where BaseHealth is the base HP for your AT and HPBuffs are health buffs converted to decimals. The BaseHealth(1+HPBuffs) part can be converted to your HP when all of your HP buffs are active. If you have nothing but set bonuses and/or passive accolades modifying your health, simply login and see how much health you have and replace the forementioned part with your HP as a number.
To see how much your +10% Regen adds up to, compare the regeneration values with it and without. Be sure to use the correct regeneration values, because this is not a linear function, meaning the difference in HP/sec is not the same between 90%/100% and 290%/300%, for example.
Recovery works exactly the same, just that some of the numbers are different. The 240 is now 60 (it takes 60 seconds to recover all your endurance with base recovery), BaseHealth and all related buffs are now BaseEnd, RegenBuffs are now RecoveryBuffs.
Or alternatively, if you don't want to do all the math yourself, just mouse over the regen and recovery percentages in Mid's to see how much you're actually getting. -
Maybe I'm just tired or something, but I can't follow your logic. If slotting Brawl and Boxing is the best solution to achieve a goal (in this case, S/L Def), why change slotting just because "slotting boxing and brawl is madness"? What I mean is that if those slots aren't direly needed elsewhere, and this is where they fulfill a purpose most efficiently, why do anything about it?
