  1. Though I appreciate the potential advice, this thread seems to be straying from the original point.

If you're laughing at me because I didn't download and install multiple versions drivers for everything (even components supported by Windows 7) and keep trying until I got it right, you missed the point entirely.

The point is, if I have to spend days downloading drivers and *experimenting* to get Windows 7 to work, maybe go through another install until I get it right, then I can't in good conscience recommend Windows 7 to the average CoH player.

I didn't say it doesn't work at all, just that it didn't work where Vista did, which really should not be the case if Windows 7 *was* ready - it should work at least as good as Vista, possibly better.

I'm not a good sales person. I can't put on a smile after fighting for a week to get Windows 7 working well and tell people that Windows 7 is perfect, and the time to install it is now! Maybe it'll be great, and maybe I'll try to install it and get it to work right again, because I *can* tinker if I have to - but I still won't recommend it until the install procedure is less tinkering and more throw in the CD, have a snack, and start gaming.

We went through this before with Vista - even the devs were telling people to stick with XP a bit longer because of the problems associated with the newer OS hadn't been entirely worked out yet. So I don't see why my claim is any worse.

I don't hate Windows 7 - it has a lot of promise, and some features I still miss after switching back to Vista, particularly the audio settings/behavior and that show desktop button!

    Updater freezes.

First thing you should do is contact CoH support, they likely have some troubleshooting steps for you to try.

Ironically, I ordered that one because it's the most similar chipsets/design to what Apple uses at a decent price (Gigabyte is closer but costs twice as much). Since I know the Mac I have works so well, it made sense to build a PC with similar specs.

I tested it specifically because I have a free upgrade of Windows 7 coming after release, and I wanted to know what to expect. I'm not willing to fight with the release candidate for a couple months only to have it expire so I have to start it all over again.

All of those possibilities were covered and tested during the CoH Mac Beta. It fortunately doesn't present any issues.

It was shipped by Newegg in an official blue Microsoft folio. I meant official as opposed to downloading it from a Torrent site or something.

Uninstall your existing drivers first in the device manager, then use these, assuming you're on 64-bit. That should solve your crashes and low framerates. As for your issues with patching, I can only suggest that you start from scratch rather than keeping an installation leftover from Vista. Make a backup of your CoH files, delete the originals, install Win 7, copy them over to C:\City of Heroes, then run the updater as you would normally do. If this doesn't fix your problem, give me details about your motherboard and I'll investigate further.
As I said above, I was using the 185.85 drivers, and I started the Windows 7 install with a clean format (booted from the disc and formatted the partition). I also mentioned that every piece of hardware I have was supported by Windows 7 - I didn't need to download any drivers. I downloaded the nVidia one, though, because nVidia's official drivers are usually better.

This is the motherboard I have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136055

I should also say the problems I had weren't critical failures. I had a decent system for working around the patching problems (which obviously aren't related to the nVidia drivers), the crashes weren't exactly daily, and I could have probably waited out the nVidia problems until they released better drivers.

But, I realized a few things, which led me to make the declaration that Windows 7 isn't quite ready:

    1. First, it's a pre-release right now, and when it is released, nearly all of us are going to have to go through another complete re-install, both to get a clean system and because the pre-release is "Ultimate", and most people are going to effectively downgrade to "Home Basic" or "Home Premium".

    2. Microsoft could still make some substantial changes before it hits release.

    3. The average CoH player is more likely to install pretty much the same way I did, only probably less cleanly (they may upgrade directly from Vista, XP, etc). If I had problems doing that on all supported hardware, multiply that times a few hundred at least the day Windows 7 ships.

    4. It's quite possible that even though I took precautions to make sure the install would be good, I still could have had a bad install. Windows can be unpredictable that way, especially with a pre-release. But then you have to refer to (3) above again.

In summary, I probably could have got it working - maybe - if I tried reinstalling Windows 7 and everything *again*. Or it's possible I even have to get into upgrading BIOS, video card firmware, etc. But then we get into territory where a normal person who doesn't know that stuff would be unable to do an install like this successfully, and the only answer they'll get here is likely LOL BUY A NEW PC.

My post wasn't to say Windows 7 sucks, just that it's not quite ready unless you're the adventurous type. The final release will probably be different, and I'll re-test it then.

Some of it might be, but that doesn't account for either the patches failing or the background application instability - a few times a week CoH will still be running but the taskbar/desktop will be unreachable until I do a reset.

Like I said, each time I started over from scratch. Clean format, downloaded new Windows 7 drivers, etc. Supposedly Windows 7 should behave at least as well as Vista, since the hardware was the same and the generation of drivers was the same.

I didn't say "don't use Windows 7", just that it's not ready yet.

The manufacturer of the issue drivers may not have created a fix yet.
With the exception of the nVidia drivers, everything else I used came with Windows 7. I used the same rule I did with Vista: Only replace a driver if the included one doesn't work (that usually leaves you with the best tested driver).

Pretty much everything on this PC is supported by both Vista and Windows 7 except the Realtek driver in Vista is terrible, so I replaced it there. The Win 7 Realtek driver works great so I left that alone. So nothing too unusual hardware-wise.

Otherwise, the two installs were functionally identical.

It's a setup that worked great with Vista, so comparatively it should work great with Windows 7 too. Both in the case of the Vista install and the Windows 7 install I started with a clean format.

Nvidia 9800 GT (185.85 official nvidia drivers), Intel Core2Duo 2.8 ghz, 4 gigs of RAM.

The Windows 7 RC disc I got came as an extra with an OEM version of Vista Home Premium, so it was legit - not some version downloaded off the internet. I also fully patched it until there were nothing but languages left in Windows Update.

The point, though, is that if I managed to have problems with a by-the-book install (thankfully I was able to *play* CoH at least) on a computer designed to run Vista, there will be a hundred times as many at the Windows 7 launch.
  12. I make my home on Triumph. It's a small population server, so it depends if you like a large population or less lag.
  13. On XP I believe you have to copy cohupdater.exe to the desktop and double-click it.
  14. I tested the Windows 7 Release Candidate with City of Heroes over the past month and made the following observations:

    - I only got one CoH patch to complete successfully. The rest failed, and got stuck in a loop where it would keep "Fixing Files" forever. I had to solve the problem by copying the files over from my Mac CoH client. Running the Updater as Administrator didn't help, nor did messing with the permissions.

    - Very low framerates and very high lag with an nVidia 9800 GT, which shouldn't happen. On a medium sized team, even the simplest visual effects would slow the game down to a slideshow. Yes, I was using the official nVidia driver and not Microsoft's.

    - Instability, the game would crash or freeze several times a week so that the entire system would no longer respond (requiring a hard reset).

    - Switching back to Vista miraculously solved all the above problems.

It looks like Windows 7 is not yet ready for CoH.
  15. Let me try and clear up some misinformation spread by this thread:

    - The memory leak/crash problem *is* being worked on. It just hasn't been solved yet.

    - You *can* run CoH in as little as 1 gig of RAM, but 4 gig is strongly recommended. This is for pretty much the same reason as with the Windows client - the less RAM you have, the more likely leaks will cause crashes.

    - More RAM is especially important if you play red size, as there are more textures in a smaller amount of space than hero side. The buildings and structures red side are more densely packed, while they're more spread out hero side.

    - The /reloadgfx and /unloadgfx are functionally identical, and are named differently for the same reason there are /e lotus and /e yoga emotes.

    - The /reloadgfx and /unloadgfx commands dump textures out of video RAM and memory, and reload them from disk (as advertised). The reason it works so well reducing crashes is because it seems to simply release all the memory and then reallocate it, which accidentally fixes any leaks that are already in progress.

    - Apple designs its own logic boards, heat sinks, cases, and power supplies. It has to, so it can patent them. Otherwise, all the other parts including processor, chipset, video, memory, hard drives, dvd drives, and even displays are OEM parts. OEM means you might not be able to buy them in a store, but you can mail order them as well as Apple can. The exception is Apple laptops, which also have custom order speaker systems, fans, and keyboards/trackpads.

    - City of Heroes is *not* ready for Windows 7. I tested it for nearly a month, and had problems ranging from patches failing to high lag, low framerate, and general instability that can't be blamed on the beta nVidia driver alone. I've since switched back to Vista until the problems can be solved (I'll make a post to the Tech forums later on this). CoH is, however, reportedly ready for Snow Leopard.

I hope that clears everything up.

  16. There will be Network Maintenance tomorrow morning. Hopefully it'll solve some of the connection and lost packets issues. *crosses fingers*

  17. I've verified this problem...on the Windows client. So it's not unique to Mac.

Keep using /bug and they'll catch it eventually.

  18. That doesn't quite make sense, since they do have software for the G series keyboards that works quite nicely. If possible, I'd like to know if it's: a) a policy with only mice, b) maybe the mouse is too new and will eventually get Mac software, or c) if Logitech has changed its policy on Mac support.

  19. Since you're a Logitech customer, would you be willing to write their support and ask what their position is on Mac support for mice? (they won't answer me since I don't own any of their mice)

  20. You're in luck. Most of the Logitech mice support Macs out of the box - but to add special features, you have to download the Mac software for it from Logitech's web site.

  21. It reloads the data periodically. If you have a very slow connection it's going to impact the game performance a lot. Meanwhile, try /bugging it, as it might be the refresh rate was turned too high to be feasible.

    Snow Leopard

I wish I could test it! Sadly I'm not a registered "deluxe" Apple developer.

  23. Opening any window that accesses information outside your own player account (like the SG window) may cause lots of lag on a busy server. It's always been that way.

    Demoplay?

To be included in the upcoming v2 Mac Guide:

Playing Back Demorecords on a Mac

To play back Demorecord files, you will first need to learn the name of the file you wish to play back. This can be accomplished with the steps shown in the Retrieving Screenshots and Demorecords section above.

Once you have done that, you will get a crash course in using the MacOS X command line:

    1. Open Terminal located in Applications > Utilities.
    2. Type one of the two following commands:

If your City of Heroes data files are located in City Of Heroes.app > Contents > Resources > transgaming > Program Files > City of Heroes:

    /Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cohupdater.exe -demoplay c:/Program\ Files/City\ of\ Heroes/client_demos/*demofile*.cohdemo -disable2d

If your City of Heroes data files are located in City Of Heroes.app > Contents > Resources > transgaming > coh:

    /Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cohupdater.exe -demoplay c:/coh/client_demos/*demofile*.cohdemo -disable2d

NOTE: Make sure to replace *demofile* with the actual name of the Demorecord file you wish to play back.

You will see the Updater open, and then City of Heroes on top of it. It will seem like it's loading for a while, and then your Demorecord should play back. If you see a screen with night time clouds, that means City of Heroes wasn't able to find the file you specified.

NOTE: If your City of Heroes application is located somewhere other than Applications, replace that part of the command line appropriately.

NOTE: The -disable2d command line option turns off heal/damage text and chat text. It was added because there's a bug currently where all log text (like "You are flying!") is spoken on-screen. If you choose to have text display, you will have to edit the Demorecord file. Do so carefully, and back up first!
