Quote:"I suppose the effectiveness of their newest toys can only be demonstrated so adequately in a controlled environment." Mimi answered, pushing her glasses back. "Potential clients would want to know how their potentially future tools will hold up in the chaos of a real battle, wouldn't they?""I seriously doubt these little skirmishes were a means of weapons trials between Ms Longstaff and the Corporation...even in the Rogue Isles we still have weapons expo events, you know all the latest and greatest gather to show off their new explosive toys or doomsday devices...infact I distinctly remember the European Villainous Immorality League holding several such expos themselves back before it all went sour..."
She giggled, "so what would be the point in this skirmish if the Corporation and their ilk can readily show off their weapons at such events..."
The avatar ponders for a brief moment before continuing.
"However, I believe Longstaff WarTech have made it clear on their site that Molly's weaponry is for the most part experimental and as such not for sale at this very moment. Excuse me, I'll just find the relevant page."
After a short pause, a small rectangular window pops up in front of her, which splits off into several copies then she flicks it with her finger, one for each person in the room. It's a list of FAQs about the company on its own website, one of the questions and its answer confirming her belief. -
In that case, that's not strictly fantasy. Fantastical, yes, but it's not something I'd expect the heroes of most fantasy works that I'm aware of to be sporting, nor are such haircuts exclusive to Japanese fantasy either. That's not to say I'm against the idea of anime/manga-based hair disasters, mind.
Now, for hairstyles -linked- to the Fantasy genre... I, erm... I've got nothing. Other than that of Jareth. Maybe. -
Quote:"I'm not certain," Mimi Lolcat broke her silence with a voice to match her avatar: one you would associate with a knowledgeable individual like a successful businesswoman or librarian, perhaps, somewhere between her 30s or 40s. "That throwing anybody, even an armoured soldier, from the roof of a tall building outside of the most extreme of circumstances, of which I personally don't consider the situation in the footage shown to us earlier to be, as 'reasonable force'. Holt should, in my opinion, consider himself lucky to be alive if he hasn't already died from any injuries sustained in the fall."... an escaping enemy combatant justifies the use of force, note, he used, reasonable strength, non-lethal and non-fatal, and those cowardly 'heroes' did nothing to help until it was too late.
Just as she finished, mrthrowback blinked and did a doubletake at something unseen before bringing up the banstick again and hammering it a few times against the floor to get everyone's attention.
"Okay, if any of you don't want to be on the receiving end of this baby, you'll listen carefully, because I'm only saying this once. First, drop the little snipes a few of you insist on throwing at each other. Including you, Stephanie. No need to bite someone's head off for a minor mistake. Secondly! Knock off with the 'this debate is stupid' comments. If you disapprove of the topic so much, you're free to leave of your own accord and let us get on with it. Miriage, calm it down a little yourself too, please. Third, I'd like to concur with Morpheus that we should kinda revert to the original topic. Right. Continue. Remember all I said." -
As MrBinky101 flags himself as AFK, mrthrowback points the banstick at Electric Feel again, watching it extend and strike the avatar with the same popping sound as before. This time, the stick applies the opposite effect, removing the silence barrier around him.
"Remember the rules. Keep it clean and avoid triggering an epic flamewar. If the conversation heats up again like it threatened to earlier, I'll do more than silence. Got it?"
With that, the admin casually drops the stick behind him and continues taking in the conversation. -
Quote:Um... that's pointed to the file in your My Documents folder, which none of us obviously have access to.
Can you try copy-pasting the contents instead? -
"Oh, sure." mrthrowback gladly answers as he pushes his glasses back up his nose. "Check your PM, Morpheus!"
The PM, which Morpheus will have been notified of with a gentle jingle on his end, includes what some would consider a quick and dirty guide on how to review a room's logs, available from the first message posted right up to now. Despite the sloppy writing, presumably on throwback's part, it still remains fairly easy to follow.
"And yes, I am aware that some serious editing is in order, thank you. I will get round to it as soon as I can." -
mrthrowback eventually draws his banstick from behind him and points it at the mess of shadows that is Electric Feel. Almost instantaneously, the stick extends to violently prod the player in whatever passes for its head with an audible pop not unlike that from opening a tub of Pringles. This is soon followed by a small blue field surrounding the avatar with the text "SILENCE!" in a big bold red font orbiting along its midpoint.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I think it's safe to say we can leave -that- particular subject alone for a short while. Once we've all cooled down a little, we can -maybe- return to it, okay?" -
Mimi Lolcat calmly snaps her fingers, calling forth a copy of the memo from an unknown source. After donning a pair of rather fashionable reading glasses - something obviously worn by the avatar for show - she takes a moment to absorb the virtual A4. However, rather than passing any opinion she may have, the woman merely looks to Feel with a raised brow.

((Not to clash with Mech's thead, but this is intended to follow directly on from Rogue War III, which took place on the Union Server this weekend just gone. While this Open RP takes place in the Unionverse, having a character on that server is by no means a requirement for participation as long as you're aware for the events that transpired over the course of last week. Your character in this thread can be pretty much anyone right down to a random civvy, really.))
((Yes, this is somewhat inspired by/nicked from the Ghost in the Shell episode "Chat! Chat! Chat!", but I couldn't really work out a better way to get this going. And look on the bright side. It's a Unionverse OpenRP without chaos, panic and disorder and several things going boom before most people can contribute. Or lobotomised psychic whales.))
The online game Other Life Online, unlike other MMOs out today, has served as an extreme form of social networking for some years now. Players can create their avatars in their own image, or at least as close to considering the creator's limitations and meet up with other players to engage in various activities available within the extensive gameworld, much of them designed by the players themselves, rather than simply going out and hitting rats with an improbable sword all week. Of course, if you wanted to do that, someone was bound to have developed a working Whack-A-Mole somewhere, but that's about it. On the plus side, it does combine reliable VoIP code with some of the finest lip-synching seen in a virtual world. Why? Well, we shall get to that soon.
The game's world is generally divided up into regions geared toward specific types of content for the sake of making things easier to find if not a complete walk in the park. You know, action activities in one corner of the map, puzzle games crammed into an impossible cranny on the other end. Your attention is now drawn to the region of Blatherston, an area dedicated to masses of 3D chatrooms for all your mass, erm, discussion needs. Within this region, a new room has just been opened, one that will draw attention to most of the people living in the City of Paragon, Rhode Island, USA, Earth and so on.
Once you've figured out how to enter this room, because for some reason all the actual doors in the game world keep answering "It's locked." every time you click on them, you find yourself in what appears to be a large lecture hall, much like the ones in just about every university you've ever been to. The only notable difference, of course, is the complete lack of any wooden finishings or other decor. Instead, everything is plain and angular, plasticky and split between two very bright colours. Red down one side, Blue down the other, with a great big white star in the middle. For some reason the star is cracked right down the middle. Whoever you happen to worship knows why.
Before you, on your highest point, sits a lone man. He appears to be a healthy twentysomething with a mullet directly out of some 1980s cop show and aviator's glasses to match, however, a player's avatar here has never once been a clear indication of the individual behind it. His position at the highest point in the room, along with a small yellow star above his head indicates that this man is the room's admin and prime moderator. His public info identifies him "mrthrowback". Across the hall sits the first standard member to enter, assuming others hadn't entered before her only to suffer the inconvenience of ISP failure. She is an improbably beautiful woman with short black hair that doesn't quite reach her shoulders. She is dressed in grey trouser suit. Further inspection of her public data reveals her username as "Mimi Lolcat", but that's about all you're likely to find out without commiting some kind of breach of the game's EULA.
"Welcome!", the player known as mrthrowback greets you with a slight wave. "Please, take a seat. Now, before I continue, I need to ask just a few teensy little things. First off, I ask that you try to keep it clean here, or I'll be forced to use the banstick here."
The admin then proceeds to pull a large plasticky rod from behind his chair and points it at you before putting it back.
"If at any time you fail to keep your cool and get all shouty and abusive towards another member, see above. Pull any stupid stunt that would serve to disrupt this conversation, see above. Generally talk out of your bunghole incoherently with nothing worthy of a contribution to this discussion... you get the idea, right? Don't worry, I've set that as this room's Message Of The Day so I don't need to kill my throat repeating it."
mrthrowback then proceeds to shuffle a pile of virtual papers about, much in the same manner as a newscaster.
"SO! Today's topic, which shall be played back to all who enter the room... We've seen some pretty nasty events occur over the course of the past week or so that has divided public opinion on Paragon City's heroes. Primarily -one- hero being somewhat allegedly unheroic in his treatment of a surrendering Soldier of Arachnos - I mean, defenestration isn't exactly nice, now - beating down on Rogue Isles residents purely on the basis of passing comments, yadda yadda yadda. Well, allegedly, but that little genius Molly Longstaff seemed to have it in for him, didn't she? While the offending hero ended up leaving the land of the living at the hands of one of The Corporation, I have to wonder if the division of opinion has shifted at all in the days that followed. Discuss, people!" -
Quote:Assuming you are even in a position to go desktop to begin with, that is.Personally, I'd never consider a laptop for gaming. They're just not really designed for that sort of thing, and they ALL lack in some region or another.
Get yourself a good desktop instead if you want to game seriously. -
I once managed to hook a spring into my middle finger once back when I was twelve. Picked it up from the floor with the intent to chuck it in the bin once the teacher had finally shut up and it somehow broke skin and got stuck while I waited.
And then, back before my 20th, I ended up passing out at work. On my feet. Apparently I smacked my head off a desk as I fell so when I came to, I was pretty much numb down one side and shaking for several minutes. Cue back issues for several months (Still got them, just on a minor scale now) and suddenly going numb down one side AGAIN in bed a week or two later. The nightlong stay in hospital wasn't fun.
A nurse smegging up the art of taking one's blood even less so. -
Take all the time you think you need, man. If things are starting to drag you down, it's not worth pushing yourself on to the point of clawing your own eyes out.

Heard on The Marc Maxxis Morning, Rescuer Radio, January 20th 2009:
"And that was 'Planet Earth' from Duran Duran.
As all you lovely guys and gals in the Birthplace of Tomorrow may well be aware - and if you aren't, welcome to Earth because... this is some fairly large-scale stuff from where I'm standing... sitting, sitting - the media's gone just a -little- bit crazy over the antics of Pious *adopts faux-deep voice* 'The Priest' *returns to normal* Hunter.
Well, yesterday, it looks like he finally got the comeuppance many thought was coming to him when one of the Corporation's goons decided to pick a bone with him, killing a Longbow Agent in order to summon The Priest to Warburg for a mano-a-mano fight. Judging from the photos released, though, I think it's safe to say he picked more than just -a- bone, you know what I'm saying? In any case, we at Rescuer wish Mr. Hunter a speedy recovery and our thoughts go out to the family of Longbow Rifleman Simon Wills, who was cruelly used as the bait in this incident.
In spite of Hunter's current condition, Molly Longstaff has issued a statement regarding her part in the incident. Whoa boy, does she have a grudge! After giving her own condolences to and offering financial support to Wills' family, she went on to slam Hunter's alleged antics over the past week, branding him 'a cancer on Paragon's hero community' and promising to take 'further action against him if he continues his current behaviour'. You can find a copy of the full statement on the Rescuer website.
Well, seeing as Paragon's heroes seem to be going through quite the car crash this week, next up on the playlist is... *adopts deep creepy voice* KAVINSKY!" -
Uh...
Crazy Dragon is joined by his sister, DJ Stacker, and his mum StreetLight. Due to a magical mishap, he ended up with a female clone of himself now operating as Sting Star once the initial mess was dealt with. He's also on good terms with the teenage cross between Tony Stark and Motoko Kusanagi that is Molly.EXE, often meeting up for scheduled bouts of Dance Dance Revolution. Currently dating Trick. Second Shot blames Crazy Dragon for her death and is currently hellbent on wiping the entire Stacker family from the genepool.
Molly.EXE has several agents in her employ. Crash Leadfoot was hired after her previous employers collapsed in on themselves, along with 777. Crash often operates with Mashup and almost ended up destroying the alien robot Star Splitter during their first encounter. Erica the Butler was initially built my Molly as a personal project, but has since become a vital asset to the teen genius' organisation, and Sky Stormer tends to be found in the nearest Longstaff WarTech lab ranting his head off over his powersuit. Justine Sampson has yet to actually socialise proper with the rest of them. The whole team is currently targeted by the former human Digital Curse and disgraced scientist Constructed Curse.
DJ Stacker owns a record label and radio station, all by amazing coincidence staffed by metahumans. DJ Marc Maxxis presents a decent-sized chunk of the radio station, while White Noiz and Another Visitor produce their own music. Reactor Party is also on hand whenever a songwriter is needed. Being one of the Stacker family also sees her targeted by Second Shot.

Stop posting your robot porn, Tech,
*de-stresses, grinds stress balls, throws his plush Jigglypuff against the nearest wall repeatedly, and gets a decent dose of caffeine!*
Okay, I'd like to apologise for being a ratty b'stard there. I have no excuse. I'm a *****. I'm sorry.*begbeg*
I'll try and clarify a few things though.
First, I wasn't saying that I -wanted- vehicles in the game. Well, not that badly anyway. Would be nice, but at the same time, it's not the end of the world for me. No biggie there. Really. I'm fine with fudge. Mmm... fudge... >.>
I understand that adding vehicles may never happen, even so, I still personally disagree with a few things. Not necessarily out of the desire to see the impossible happen, but a couple of things didn't quite make sense to me at the time, but I'm more than willing to accept that I'm wrong to fail to see sense in them:
The "How do you fit a car into a cave?" questions, I still don't really agree with, from a logical PoV. I mean, I personally just don't see the need to even consider trying to jump that hurdle. Why would anyone -try- to cram a car into an office (Short of making a dramatic entrance)? Logic would dictate, for example, that one would park, lock up and walk into said office, right? Remember this is me trying to make sense of such questions now, I'm not going to try arguing my point any further. o.O
Quote:It was how I'd interpreted the following:Who said "No one should have a travel power"?
Quote:If I can fly, why would I go somewhere in my car?
And again, I'm sorry for my attitude earlier.
Quote:You want a car? Go play Grand Theft Auto -
*sneaks in*
*plops big cake on table with stonking great candle that reads "LIE?"*
*sneaks out* -
Quote:Yes. Yes I have, but for the time being I'm setting that issue aside because, quite frankly "I can fly, I don't need a car, ergo nobody else should be entitled to the the option regardless even if the chances of it being doable is possible or not" is ignorance and selfishness beyond ignorance and selfishness.I did read it. Have you read any of the responses to the suugestion not only in this thread but the numerous others (to which even the Devs responded with "No") that have suggested vehicles before or are you "selectively reading"?
And don't get me started on "How do you fit a car into a cave?". Quite why your asking such blatantly obvious questions that are barely worth dignifying with an answer just beggars belief. -
Quote:Never said it was. Kindly stop putting words into my fingers. Not taking any kind of travel power is your choice, not anything wrong or broken with the game.
Care to actually read the rest of that post? Or are you happy just selectively reading all the time? -
-
Quote:Quite simply... they don't. A little thing called the Pros and Cons, which already applies to the existing travel powers in some minor way or another, like Fly's slowness, for example. How does your car/plane/motorcycle/motorboat/helicoptor work indoors? In caves? How does your car/motorcylce travel over water? How will it navigate the Shadowshard? How does your car fit through a door? Go up an elevator?
You wouldn't, but you're kind of bypassing the point here. You can fly. Good for you, but what about, for example... this guy? *collars very-little-known hero Captain DudeGuy!*
So, what superpowers do you bring to the fray, then?
Superpowers? SUPERpowers? Buh. Haven't got squat other than Mr. Stabbity here?
Mr... Stabbity?
My sword, man, my sword. Other than that, I'm just a regular bog-standard human.
So no fancy supertech to back you up?
Nah. Ain't got the funds.
So how do you get about the city then?
Well, obviously my own two feet at my usual snail's pace. Not like those showoff super-speedsters or those fancy leapfrogs hopping about the town.
Doesn't that kind of suck, taking an age to get from A to B?
Yes, actually, it does sometimes. I need to look into some wheels, I know.
SO! Captain DudeGuy possesses the following issues:
1) Being a 'Nat' with no extranormal abilities, he can neither fly, leap great distances, teleport nor stand any chance of outrunning a car going at National Speed Limit with those pathetic mundane legs of his.
2) Being a bit short on cash, overpriced supertechnology is out of his reach.
Now how could he possibly overcome this hurdle of bog-standard humanity? Of course, get together a few hundred notes and get himself a set of wheels!
See where I'm getting at here?
You can fly? Good for you. You don't need a car. So, you know... don't pick it and let those without your fancy-schmancy powers pick it?
A little bit of logic helps, you know? -
That's because it got fixed minutes after I posted. Take a look at the bottom of his/her/its/spacechicken's post, where you'll find "Last edited by:"...
Quote:As for the Vehicles thing, not going to happen and not really needed for a game where you can fly, jump, teleport and run at super speed. Let's spend the Dev time on new content, furthering powerset customization etc.
Additionally, this may be considered a bit nitpicky, but doesn't this also fall under new content and additional customisation in a manner of speaking? -
Quote:That might have actually worked... if you'd actually linked it properly (*cough*YouPutTwo"http://"Prefixes*cough*).I now direct you to Failblog.org.
