My point there is that the rush you get from getting a rare or very rare collectible item from a game is different from, say, the rush you get from winning $1,000.

With these there is nothing really there to pull me into that kind of behavior. They are fun, but the costumes are easy to get, and the ATIOs are easy to com by too. I have all I need of each, so I have no real reason the continue to buy these packs.
I have nothing to say about this, as it's your decision afterall. I intend to get some of these boosters because I think it's a neat idea. I'm just saying that people who are calling this gambling are being quite silly. Go put down your entire paycheck double 0* and then come back and tell me if you think these cute little boosters are anything like gambling.

*(Actually, I never played Roulette, lol)

Oh my gods, are we teaching our children to gamble? Moral panic and outrage!

I've played CCGs for fun, and I've played Poker, Blackjack and slot machines in casinos for money. It is not the same experience.

I once played a game of Poker with a bunch of friends where the ante was all Uncommon and Rare Magic cards. Then we made decks out of those cards and played a game of Magic. That was... interesting!
  4. If you ever played Magic, maybe you'd remember that feeling of anticipation while opening a whole bunch of booster packs you just purchased. Maybe you were lucky enough to feel the rush of excitement when you finally got that Black Lotus or Mox Jet after opening so many and just finding a lousy Island. This is just like that.

And no, that's not gambling. I don't know why so many people are saying that it is. They are simply wrong. If it was gambling, then these Super Packs would give you a chance of winning 100 store points, or 1,000, or the grand prize of 1,000,000. Or maybe you'd have a chance of winning extra hours, days or months of VIP access. If it was really gambling, then it'd give you a chance of winning actual money, credited to your PayPal account or whatever.

    ATIOs up

Well frak. I probably won't be able to log into the game for another 9 hours yet. Darn you kids who can play all day and don't have to work! lol
  6. Well, go ahead and judge me...

    Robots/Traps MasterMind

    Emp/Rad Defender

Robots/Force Field MasterMind (no pulse laser gun powers)

    Mind Control/Psionic Assault Dominator

    Invulnerability/Super Strength Tank

Well see, it was powered by lightning and fireworks at first, but he went a bit ahead into the future before he stopped to pick up Lincoln, and used some future steam tech to improve his time machine. That's why it can fly now!

I think I'm going to single out this one paragraph. It posits the notion that, in a world where all myths are true, then how can anyone be an atheist in that kind of world? Surely, in a universe with magic, there must be gods, right?

I'd argue that isn't necessarily so. Just because someone or something is more powerful than you are doesn't automatically mean that they deserve all your worship and prayer. In the CoH universe in particular, there seems to be this ancient pantheon of gods who created the universe and the magic within it, but it appears that even they are not all powerful. They seem to diminish when they are forgotten and not worshiped, and hang on by a celestial thread thanks to a small cult that still believes in their power.

Indeed, the Rikti are "atheists" in the sense that they destroyed all of their gods in their universe by deliberately ceasing to worship any of them, presumably disappearing in giant puffs of logic. Their gods are all dead, and so is all the magic in their world. Though it seems that magic from other worlds can be introduced there.

It might very well be a more rational point of view that, while there are clearly more powerful beings out there in a world like that of Primal Earth, and some of them even go so far as to call themselves gods, that doesn't mean that any one of them actually deserves that title, nor deserves to be so worshiped. Perhaps they are merely more powerful because they are much older and advanced than us, and they have managed to ascend to a higher plane of existence. Sound like any two TV shows that you know?
  11. I'd say the main reasons most of the responses have been so negative here is that you put this in the general discussions forum instead of the role playing forum, and linked to that, you speak of your role-playing in absolutes as if it's official canon.

No one's really caring about what you're deciding to role play (well ok, most people), it's just that your method of delivery was kind of... off. It just got worse when you dug your heels in and got defensive.

    UPDATE: Ungh, way defensive...
  12. If this movie doesn't end with Ben Franklin emerging from a temporal vortex inside his steam powered time machine and urging Lincoln to "go back" with him to fight off the legions of undead British regulars, then I'll be sorely disappointed.
  13. Well, I'm gonna have to do this too, when I get home. Prepare to get a bunch of posts about my characters on Virtue.

Now I can't wait to get back home, lol.
  14. BTW I play a demon character on Virtue that has no ties to Infernal or the CoT or whatever. She was summoned in a botched ritual (yeah yeah, this was way before this year's v-day event) and is therefore pretty much free to do whatever she wants for as long as she wants.

    So there.

  16. Maybe they could give Premiums and freebies access to VIP content over a double XP weekend, to give them a taste of what they're missing?
  17. I was gonna say something about people who would not team with stalkers so out of hand, but those pugs are just way too cute. You win this thread!

It turns out you can figure out useful physical properties of surface material by figuring out how it polarizes reflected light. The light needed to be oscillating so we could ignore the light from the projectile impact, sunlight, etc., and oscillating fast enough to keep from introducing aliasing in the signal for the high-speed physical changes introduced by the impact.
Oh that's awesome. I'm not sure, but don't astronomers do something similar sometimes to figure out the physical properties of certain celestial objects? Or I might be confusing it with something else.

We did fun stuff at that company. We had lasers that could melt bricks. You should see what they do to plastic army men. Warning: do not inhale the resulting fumes...

    (Sorry for the threadjack.)
I tended to inhale solder smoke a bit too often, back when solder still had lead in its composition. I'm pretty sure I'm fine. But... you know... talking about botched rituals and all. There, that's putting it back on track, isn't it???

That was the kind of stuff I used to work on.)
Now you got me curious as to what that material was that you were shining a laser on!

And you got me way way beat. My only claims to fame were building an 8-bit audio ADC with transistors and op-amps for my Amiga, and learning FORTH just to make silly things in MUCK code. All my EE learnin' led me absolutely nowhere! (I just got bored with it is all, heh.)

The forum is filled with a bunch of crotchety old players. As soon they read the words "herding" and "bring back", they stopped reading anything else and went straight into rant mode.

Excuse me for actually taking my character's concept seriously.

Oh yeah, and I actually got this debuff on the very first failed attempt, the very first time I tried this last night. After I got some help on the Virtue United channel and learned the debuff lasted for 20 hours*, that pretty much killed my mood to continue playing for the rest of the evening and so I just quit the game for the night.

I'm just going to ignore this arc entirely, the next time I log in to play.

*(That, and the fact that the Carnies in the very next mission were level 40, where my already debuffed emp/rad defender was level 31...)
