Quote:I agree with Necro. It is an unpopular view for some reason but most MM attacks are just fine in my book considering the damage my pets are doing. Properly slotted you can do enough damage to draw a boss off of your pets solo (assuming you want to). As a group your pets do more damage but you are much more capable of focusing damage and can use inspirations.
I've never understood the "I don't ever want to resummon my pets" attitude. When you had to buff them individually yes it was a pain, but now it is better a pet should take the Alpha strike instead of a player when necessary.
MM pets are like potato chips. We'll make more.
I used to lament over losing a Pet during a fight. Then I realized that my MM actually ACTIVATES his Primary set less than anyone but a Tank. Blasters, Trollers, heck even FF Defenders have to key their Primary powers more often than I do normally. With that in mind I don't bother to resummon after losing a Minion and if the mission is about done I won't even resummon a T2 right away.
The fact that the pets now zone with me has made a HUGE difference in this notion however. -
Quote:Comicsluvr, your point 1 is not necessarily the case - it may be that no one tried to combine SC with some other more obscure power that creates some kind of Unholy Synergy (Hey, can we get a power called Unholy Synergy please?
) that wasn't seen in test because hey, who the heck would do THAT?!?
Remember, no matter how good the devs are, 100,000 minds are >>> than 10 minds.
I thought this is what Open beta was for?
I understand than things can sometimes be combined to work in ways other than intended. BAB's discovery that Hami Raiders were using Oil Slick as a target for Howling Twilight comes to mind. Poison Trap and Recipe IOs is another good one.
Anything as complex as this game (and yes, it may seem simple to play but balancing it is complex) HAS to be tested, re-tested and then checked again to look for problems. Some will slip through because we're all Human but if the biggest problems are caught then it comes down to tweaks.
This is why the Devs give out Freespecs when they tweak a Power. That tweak might anger a whole bunch of players who LIKED it the way is was but are unhappy now. But if they have to do a wholesale slash and burn on a Power then something should have been caught earlier. If a big problem is missed then the right thing to do is man up, apologize for the mistake, fix it and move on.
Communication has been mentioned in this thread and I think that's important too. I once read that the Devs were unhappy with the way Bases were being utilized by the players. My question is how did they THINK we were going to use them? What was their goal/mindset/vision when they created them and how is their actual use so different? Did any of this disparity show up during Test?
It should also be said that what many players THINK they want and what they ACTUALLY want are sometimes two different things. The playerbase might say 'X Power is underperforming please fix it' when what they really want is for the set that X Power occurs in to be better overall.
You can never please all of the people all of the time. -
A few points I wish to make before I begin:
1) Studies seem to indicate that if a person receives a negative response to an action or effort he/she tells ten people about it. This is negative advertising.
2) Similar studies seem to indicate that if a person receives a positive response to an action or effort he/she tells ten people about it. This is positive advertising.
Now, with all this being said, I would do the following:
1) Hire a fifth person (preferably Arcana). Clearly the City of Hotties team is incapable of even the most basic quality control (my chosen field btw) otherwise they would have seen that SC was grossly overpowered during Test or (gasp!) even initial development. If you FIX the problem before it leaves the design room then it's not a problem and doesn't NEED fixing.
2) Said person begins the same Forum Judo that was mentioned on Page 1...comparing the numbers of Cannon with it's closest power and claiming that in certain circumstances the other power is even better. Issues a challenge to others to prove him wrong (which will send the ultra-competitive twitch players into a feeding frenzy for about a week). Post the real numbers after 5 pages of hotly-contested debate claiming that the team has devoted exhaustive time to balace the power (which is not a lie since this was obviously done before it was released. Just omitting the facts about the timing of the work...).
3) Said person then crafts a modest buff to #3 which might take 4 months to accomplish alone but since it affects a small percentage of the players and they seem happy anyway nothing lost there.
4) The initial team fixes #1 before it becomes a problem that THEN needs to be addressed, making the whole team look stoopid because they do this for a living and yet managed to make such a terrible blunder. Removes a potential negative blowback from players later which, in the long run, is a net positive.
5) Send the lead designer for SC home for a weekend with math homework. It was his responcibility to catch it in the first place. A little scolding is warranted.
6) Raise the jiggle factor if the system can handle it. Since 95% of the players are 15-25 year old men this will please the largest portion of the player base with the least chance of negative feedback. It will distract most from any hiccups in #1, give the folks NOT involved in the debate over #2 something to talk about and likely won't affect the players in #3 at all.
When you run so close to schedule versus man-hours of work needed people hurry and mistakes are made. Having even one extra pair of eyes looking at things can help catch a host of problems before they become REAL problems. The profit margin might suffer on the short term but in the long run players will be happier with the better-quality product, tell their friends about how few bugs there are and so forth. This has the potential of raising the player base and slowing the departure of players devoted to the game but frustrated by the constant mistakes.
Btw in my several years on these forums this is one of the best threads I've seen. Praise to the OP. -
U have seen them placed in altars and desks before. With care you may even be able to submerge it completely since the click has a short range as opposed to an actual surface. This needs to be confirmed though.

Quote:Another data point on the subject of participation-based reward tables.
Something is going on. What is going on I'm not sure. But I'm prepared to state that the probability is essentially zero that the thread/common/uncommon/rare/VR table selection is completely random. Worth noting I have yet to see anything but the middle three, and uncommon is *overwhelmingly* the highest frequency table for me so far.
I would like to point out for those new to the Assembly that Arcanaville is the player who has, on more than one occasion, been able to PROVE to the Devs that their numbers were wrong. Not to be biased but if SHE says something is wrong with the RNG then that's good enough for me when placed with all of these other reports.
For myself I have not run enough of either Trial to be able to say one way or the other. However I DO believe that IXP is severely weighted on damage since my Controllers typically gets 15-20% of her slots open per BAF run and my Fire/Fire Blaster unlocked his in 2 runs with roon to spare.
If the IXP is weighted on damage or some other factor then I'm not at all surprised that drops are as well. However I think this is wrong. Tankers use most of their Primary all the time because they're toggles and a few clicks. They Taunt and attack but their main contribution is getting whooped on. Trollers, Doms and others might use their Primary/Secondary more 50/50 while every time a MM pet attacks he IS using his Primary.
Is there any data to suggest that TAKING damage or being Sequestered is a factor? My Tanks, Brutes and Scrappers get beat down a lot and though I've never seen a VR I've never seen 10 Threads either. My Trollers and Doms never even SEE damage really but they're firing powers like mad. My Blasters are constantly getting 1-2 Warnings and even attacked as the bounce around shooting things.
As I said before, all of these numbers, especially with Arcanaville posting with some certainty, can't just be dismissed. -
I have dashed headlong into battle thinking the team was behind me only to be left alone way too often. One friend commented 'Oh no! They pulled Comicsluvr!'
It's a common joke with us. -
Believe it or not part of it might be theme. I simply don't build characters I can't form a solid theme for. Now an Ice/Dark I can figure out (lord of the frozen underworld?) but some folks may shy away from not being able to put the theme together.
Or they're so busy with the other uber builds they haven't gotten around to it yet -
Quote:I think I actually agree with the OP. What I liked most about this game was the separation of the ATs, the uniqueness of every AT. Let me explain. I'd roll builds that, when I played them on a team, I felt unique like I was doing something that everyone would notice and appreciate my presence on the team. I.E. having a ridiculously survivable tank, a kin/sonic to best maximize damage, a plant dom to best control groups, or a fire/fire blaster to be a true glass howitzer. Every AT had its weaknesses and strengths. In a team, others would appreciate my unique strengths and would help cover my weaknesses. The whole experience could be summed up in compliments from others such as, "great buffing" or "your tank can take quite a beating".
I agree with this to an extent. I recently decided to try a 'classic' team with one of each hero-side AT for a tight-knit team of 5 characters, each with well-defined roles. As it turns out my schedule is shot and the idea received lackluster response so I shelved it.
I'm not going to scream Doom and say that the new content will kill the game. I LIKE the Alpha Slot stuff because you only get one (life is about tough choices) and you can use it to fill gaps in your character (I HATE End issues so most of mine go with Cardiac).
I've been here since I9 and I remember when a team with no Blaster or Scrapper wasn't going to do 'enough damage' to defeat some of the tough AVs and EBs. A team with no Tank could survive but the players had to be smarter and keep their wits about them. A team with no buffs might do okay but then the Rad or Kin suddenly raised everything a notch or two. Inventions made everyone better...maybe by too much. Incarnates does that even more and then gives toons Power choices they never had available solo before.
ED was put in place because most characters were built the same way all the time. There was no reason NOT to have perma-Hasten and 6-slotted Stamina. Most people dropped in 1 Acc and 5 Damage in their powers and went to town. How boring is that? Now we can have everyone on a team (or most at least) go '1-2-3 JUDGEMENT!' and the target is pretty much gone. Everyone can do that...not just Blasters firing their nuke. The buff powers are the same way.
So after all the screaming about ED and characters being diversified we're drifting back towards all being the same or at least very similar again.
I like the Incarnate theme and Inventions but I think we're going too far down the road of common Powers. -
Quote:I ran the Mender Ramiel arc on one of my level 50 characters and finished the last mission to get my Alpha Slot . . . and just as I was finishing, some buddies of mine announced that they were running an STF . . . Oh, goodie! I need Shards!
So off I go to run the STF . . . and I noticed that I wasn't getting any Shards about half way through. I asked everyone else if they were getting Shards . . . everyone (who was level 50 and had the Alpha Slot) said yes . . . I just assumed I was being unlucky.
Last mission in, I decided to check in case I had missed any shards that had dropped . . . and I didn't have the Alpha Slot. "What the . . ." Then I realized that in my hurry to join the TF, I had forgotten to do the last little chat with the Mender where you actually GET the Alpha Slot. . . . My buddies on Ventrilo suddenly heard a string of invictives which are not my usual language . . .
Yeah I had just inducted a new villain of mine into my SG and then we ran a TF and several missions. I realized that I hadn't hit SG Mode before setting out and missed out on like 25k Prestige! -
Please don't try to bring the real world into the game. Otherwise my AR Blaster will cry when he shoots targets closer than 600 yds...

One thing to realize is that your teammates might notice your playstyle as well as the uber build.
I've been on PUGs where one player, not the most powerful or most aggressive, stood out to me. Not the character, but the player. He's the one who always says GJ when someone levels or lets others get the glowie or says 'Hey I found a badge! Anyone else want it?' etc. He contributes to the team through his play style, not his toon.
Someone like that can add to ANY team no matter what they play. If their build is uber too then all the better.
I used to help fledgling MM players when I first started Redside. I started an all-MM event called MasterMind Mondays and even had a Dev show up once. I helped other MM players who were having trouble and I felt great doing it. I still team with some of them on occasion and we still chat about those days.
Having an uber character is only part of being recognized and remembered. The greater share come from how you play, not what you play. -
Years ago my friends and I played a variety of RPGs. We were a pretty tight group and whenever one game closed another would open and, schedules allowing, we all knew who would be involved.
One of my more astute friends realized that we were becoming too cut off from outsiders. We didn't know a lot of other gamers but we knew a few and they were good people. He started this grand scheme of running three games at a time with three different GMs all on the same night in the same place. The three GMs would confer and interweave their plot lines and even swap players from time to time. We all met a wider group of people and had more friends because of it.
I'm not saying that your friend is wrong to prefer playing only with established friends but as you said he met YOU through one of his rare PUGs years ago didn't he? If it can happen once it can happen again.
I don't love the various TFs and Trials because I've been on some teams in the past where I was derided for being the new guy and not knowing what was going on. I know how this sort of attitude can sour a game fast and I left for over a year because of it.
But for every jerk out there you can find many good players and even a few real gems. The people you invite to your SG and chat with during the game.
Perhaps the sheer size of the Trial Leagues is too much of a shock. My first MS raid was a bit intimidating and Leagues can be the same. Perhaps what you should try to do is bring in ONE new player...someone one of your circle knows and trusts to not be rude. Play with him (boy that sounds wrong...) for a while and let everyone get used to the idea. If it works out then add another. Only bring in people you reccomend or are reccomended by people you know and respect.
There's nothing wrong with only wanting to play with good friends. But there's also nothing wrong with making your circle of good friends bigger. I cannot imagine having a whole league made up of friends of mine but I bet it would be a great feeling if it all went well. -
I have too many of these to recount them all but one stands out:
I was on my Brute Warmaster Mars. I was a relatively new player and was asked to join a RP SG with a very rich background and theme. So I'm the new guy running an arc with the founders of the SG and we're getting creamed. I stood over the bodies of the fallen, refusing to run despite them telling me to do so. I fought like a demon, used every Insp I had and won the day with about 25 HP left. Praise was lauded on me by my peers for my courage and skill.
Then as I hit Rest I realized that I'd accidentally dragged it over Self-Destruct instead in the fighting.
I survived the most hellish fighting in front of a great crew only to blow myself up.
Yeah, I lock my control bars now lol! -
Thanks very much everyone. It sounds like a nice set with some different mechanics. Now if I can just come up with a good theme lol.
-
In the midst of all the Incarnate hype I've decided to try a Kinetic Melee Brute. I was looking at Mids and the Power Siphon ability in the KM set has me a bit confused. As described the power "...modifies your other Kinetic Attack Powers so they are now capable of draining the strength of your enemies and adding that strength to you. This effect can stack up to five times."
Firstly, the Recharge/Duration cycle prevents PS from stacking at all so I'm a bit lost there.
Secondly, how exactly does the 'draining the strength of your enemies' thing work?
I like the look of the set and I'll be coupling it with SR because I have few SR toons and they seem to fit well. Just trying to understand the new stuff.
Thanks in advance for the help. -
Ever since I started seeing the softer crashes of some of the other T9s (like WP) I've hoped for an Invul upgrade. It's fine for the last few percent of an AV...but if I've survived that long why do I suddenly need it?
It's the power in my Invul builds that I skip which, as was said above, is sad for a T9. Maybe after we get some more Incarnate content the Devs can take another pass at it. Unlike a whole new set it can't be THAT hard to rebalance an existing power. -
The whole Thread/Shard thing is designed as an alternative path to Incarnate content. Mostly for solo players or people that for whatever reason don't like TFs.
The time span is slow for sure but not unreachable. But soloists should know that the Incarnate road is a long one. -
I have LOTS of toons, some Resist, some Def, some both like Invul and WP. I know that being soft capped on Def is the end-all be-all for Def (like Elude) and Granite is pretty much the pinnacle of Resist.
I also know that there's LOTS of -Def in the game. How about -Resist? I actually prefer Resist toons to Def ones for some reason but I wonder how much -Resist is out there and in what form?
Thanks in advance. -
I've been on a few Superteams and even a few PUGs where the sheer pile of debuffs made the team roll.
However now I'm running an Ice/Cold Defender with Snow Storm and as I team and solo my way up I can't help thinking if I'm not wasting my time on some of the big targets.
My question is what's the top-end for debuffs, either toggle or click, for Bosses, EBs, AV,s and GMs? Will a single debuff do any good or will it take 3-4 (or more). Is it even worth using them against the biggest targets like Romi, States and Recluse? I know that most of them are AoE so they help against flunkies near the target but as for the big honcho are they doing any good or are they too resistant? -
Quote:I watched a Devices Blaster get seriously pwnt by his own pile of Trip Mines because he was still right there (planting another mine) when the escapees came through the door.
I knew about the confuse, and was kind of wondering why I wasn't seeing it more on my own character. Then I realized... Tactics give protection and resistance to it.
This would be hilarious to see a capture of. I only have a few toons with Trip Mine but I can just see setting one as the escapees run by and thinking 'Uh oh...why are the mines blink...?' -
Quote:But you see a lot of players are already saying - I am not a hamster and I won't run on your wheel.
I refuse to grind the same nonsense and farm, farm, farm. You see people doing 6-10 trials a DAY - how long will they do that?
You think I am going to farm for all of my level 50's? I think the new style of "reward" will be the thing that makes me walk away from this game after so long. I am ignoring it for now but if this direction continues - I will not.
It has already been stated that there will be more Trials after I20. However there will always be players with more time than others and the patience to do the same thing over and over. The fact that both of the new Trials are timed and will last no longer than an hour, compared to 90 minutes or more for some of the others, makes this easier. Personally I like the BAF (now that I know how it works) and I ran it 4 times this past Saturday.
As for how long this will continue, until these same players have all of their alts stacked to the gills with components, Threads and so forth. Some players had their Alpha Slot done before I20 just to make the jump-start faster. Whatever...it's their game too if they want to play it that way. -
-
Quote:My only complaint about the new trials so far (I've done a mere one Lamba and zero BAF) is the lack of information. You have not even the slightest guess of what's going on short of having teammates that have already run several and feel like informing the team. Gigantic red letters "War Walker powers up it's Orbital Lance!"... OK? So what? What does that mean to me? (To that end.. I still have no idea. Same goes for Marauders Nova Fist or whatever it's called. I just know it one-shots my tank...)
Just a little help and extra information would go a mile towards overall team entertainment and success.
I used to grouse about the lack of information too, especially for the casual players. But then I realized I was trying to be one step above casual (below the elite 15 billion build guys though) but doing it the hard way. So I looked up Paragon Wikki and did some homework.
When the phrase 'Powering up' anything is coupled with a big red glowing circle on the ground common sense tells me not to be there. Sorry, got me on that one.
I still don't understand Lamda (done one, badly led, didn't learn much) but after half a dozen or so BAFs I feel like I could almost run one. Last time I was helping the leader give advice to new players.
Anyone who just jumps into ANY TF and tries to lead it without following someone at least once in in for trouble. I don't see the vitriol you've experienced but then I haven't seen a league built with the Queue either. Mostly built up of friends and people the leader has teamed with before.
Good luck on finding better teams. -
Quote:What I'm stuggling to understand is why the system works like this at all, actually. What is the purpose of "exotically named" salvage except to make me puzzle over the screen, when it all had to do was be "small, medium, large, and huge 'orbs'" or something? Not hating on the whole system, but spending 15 minutes trying to figure out which special piece I need to slot where seems like a waste. Unless later they plan to let us sell and auction this stuff or something, which would appear to go against the whole point.
I try to plot my path and write down what I need so I don't have to guess. Done this ever since I built the wrong kind of Cardio earlier. -
I want a /Rad MM.
And a /Sonic MM.
All I'm gonna say.
