Even scientific surveys by their nature exclude the segment of the population who doesn't like to respond to surveys...
  2. You should see how much memory it chews up when left running, too.

I've had a couple friends complain about the game being really slow / laggy, and when I checked, the NCSoft Launcher was running and eating up over a gig of ram. For one of them, who still had an old machine with 2Gb in it, this was completely killing their ability to run the game.

I always recommend that everyone use the "Exit Launcher after starting game" option because of this.
  3. Did Sentinel show itself as being up to date with the game version? Sometimes after a patch it takes a little while before Sentinel gets updated, but it's usually within a day or so. It'll say that it needs an update but not be able to find one.
  4. Even if that link is missing, there IS a way to navigate to the main page, but it's not very obvious.

Click "Learn More" at the bottom of the splash page, and then the "Community" tab at the top of the Freedom site.

It was most likely an old costume piece. A couple issues ago the "Masks with Hair" category was removed, and all the mask options that were in it were added to the "Standard" category.

So unfortunately, if you have one of those options and go to a tailor, they'll get reset back to the defaults.

If it happened without using the tailor for something else... I don't know, it's not supposed to. The Nemesis staff going missing is downright strange. Do you have any of the other vet powers (Blackwand, Sands of Mu, Ghost Slaying Axe) or did those disappear as well?

  7. A popular fantasy MMO has motorcycles that can be engineered by players and used to ride around on. When you strafe, it just quick-pivots and drives in that direction. IIRC Walk already does something similar when you walk backwards.

Their motorcycles can also jump, some kind of spring loaded contraption. It looks fairly silly, and that's with a much shorter jump height than we have. I would vote for a -100% jump height debuff, similar to when you get hit by a web grenade and break out of the immobilize, but still can't jump.

Still, driving a motorcycle around in a sewer, or in City Hall or an office building does sound a bit ridiculous.

    It's the "Penelope" backpack.

The whole costume is custom for her, not a single piece shared with players. The rest of the Phalanx is jealous.

I had to demorecord and edit it, since Group Fly didn't work on her when I tried it. Would have been funny to see the Phalanx all hovering around in their little pow-wow though.

Most flight packs automatically kick in when the user is flying. See also: Goldbrickers / Sky Raiders Halloween costume.

Now, it's possible that she has a special flight power with a unique effect for it, but it's probably just decorative.

Well, it doesn't light up or anything when she flies, so I don't think it's a rocket pack or flight pack.

Psionic amplifier maybe? She has smaller little red devices on her hands, too.
  11. There's a Lioness in Beast Mastery, and we have a Coyote transform travel now, so it's inevitable that we'll see a cat transform power at some point. Tiger or Cheetah maybe? It'll be a fun day in Virtue Pocket D...

Note to devs: I'm normally not interested in vanity pets in the market, but I would gladly spend 500 points on a Bear cub pet if it helped justify Beast Mastery getting a bear model for its T8.
  12. The root of it is that the animation system is extremely complicated. It tends to be a bit fragile, not because of the system itself, but because of all the years of accumulated work that has been built up on top of it, and each other. Thanks to posts from BAB and few others we've managed to build a fair idea of how it works mechanically, but there may only be one or two people within Paragon who truly have a complete understanding of it.

It's a very complex system with interactions from the powers system, the game engine itself, and a rapidly expanding set of rules. All of that is combined so that it can decide which animation out of over 8,000 to play at any given moment. Really it's more like 24,000 since each body type has different animations, but those share identifiers so that game don't have to consider them when deciding which to use.

So anything that affects something as fundamental as movement is going to need a LOT of work to make sure it doesn't conflict with those 8,000 animations. For something like ninja run and beast run they can cheat a little; since the normal standing animations for powers will work fine. It still takes very carefully setting up of the priorities so that the run animation works at all though.

On a rocket board, however, it's much more problematic. If the wrong animation plays, your board disappears. For a weapon, that's not a huge problem. Though redraw can be annoying, it's not nearly as immersion-breaking as your rocket board going away but you continue to float there until it reappears.

Suppressing toggles might not even be as viable as it sounds. While it's possible to suppress effects of a power, the power itself is still active and asserting its animation state. For most toggles that's only an issue when zoning, but even then it could get the system into the wrong state after a zone transition and might not be able to get back to the right one. It would take a lot of careful work to check each toggle for possible side-effects.

There really should be a corollary to the Standard Code Rant for anything that touches the animation system. It's not a bad system, it's just a very large and complex one, that as a result of the explosion of content in the game has grown some very subtle and difficult to understand interactions.

Made one based on that and added it to the original post. It's slightly modified from the original scheme though. Without another color in the lower half, red boots was just too much IMO.

I've also tried some variations with white boots and/or red on the upper chest / arms, but they just didn't look very good.

  15. Here's some artist's conceptions of several different alternative outfits. Some of them are Zombie Man's designs with the seam contrast I think we would see if the colors were applied to the real costume, some I've seen suggested in the thread, and some I just made up to try it out (the reconstructed zipper).

I'm curious to see which ones people like the best.

Keep in mind though, that she's already been featured in promotional art, so it's unlikely the costume will change at this point. This is just for fun.

I do like that one as well, as it ties together the top and the bottom and makes it look like a single piece, just broken up with some belts.

Judging from the zippers, it may have even been designed that way and then later modified. Otherwise the short little zipper on the bottom doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

It also keeps the white, and for some reason the black tights on the bottom just doesn't look very good to me.

At least she's wearing pants. A running joke with the group I play with is that Icon sells sewage-proof spandex. Advanced technology and/or magic makes it repel the stench, and everything else. I feel sorry for the poor saps who have exposed skin below the waist.
  18. Thermal gets an AV-killer as well. It's otherwise outclassed in buff territory by Cold, but it just about as effective against AVs.
  19. Basically, it's slightly modified D&D rules.

On a 20-sided die, if you roll a 20, you get a "critical success", and score a lucky hit no matter how much the odds were stacked against you.

If you roll a 1, you get a "critical miss" or "critical failure", and swing your sword wildly, completely missing the stone giant who's right in front of you. Consider yourself lucky that you didn't stab your own foot.

A 1 out of 20 chance corresponds exactly to 5%.

While CoH uses floating point numbers and is effectively an almost-infinite-sided die, ALL hit rolls are capped a minimum of 5%, and a maximum of 95% chance to hit. This goes for rolls done by players and NPCs alike. The defense soft cap is when you get so much defense, that base NPC rolls are always 5% or lower. To-hit debuffs can get you there as well, but are less reliable due to combat modifiers and debuff resistance.

(I'm sure someone will step in and explain how it's actually capped TWICE, once before Accuracy is applied, and once after. But this post is long enough as it is. )

Yeah, did the people saying that look at the picture taken from the back? I can't imagine anyone wearing actual underwear that looks anything like that. It just looks uncomfortable, if not impossible for it to stay in place.

The red on the top doesn't really look like a bra, either. More of a half-corset. I guess patterns on tights aren't allowed to follow actual body curves without being somehow sexual.

One thing most characters like Penny have in common is their reliance on their natural abilities rather than armor.
Very true. Penny isn't the type to go hand-to-hand with bad guys, and if they were close enough to touch her, I bet they would regret trying.

Against the types of threats that the Phalanx faces, I seriously doubt that any part of that outfit would provide significantly more protection than a bare midriff. It's not body armor, it's just a costume.

    Quote:
The exposed belly aspect of her costume can just be simple to explain as just her own personal style.

Basically, Penny's outfit is about looking good.
I took the liberty of rearranging your quotes a little, I agree that people seem to be forgetting about context. In game, in character, this is a costume that was supposedly picked out by a teenage girl. OF COURSE she wants to look good in it. From what we've seen of her personality, she also likely wanted something that would look "cool", hence all the excess straps and belts that are definitely not 'sexy' in any way.

Call it fanservice, call it what you will, but the fact is that many young women in real life enjoy dressing much more provocatively than Penelope is. When it comes to one that is now very likely above the legal age and has a scary amount of power at her disposal, who's going to tell her no?
  21. You walk up to Arbiter Rein, who is standing just outside the main building in Grandville (right by the doors), and talk to him. He'll have you run a brief intro mission to read some plaques and then ask which Patron you want to be introduced to.

Which one you pick only affects the missions you run and the badge that you get. Once you complete the arc, you get a respec token and unlock access to all 4 patron pools.

Note that the patrons all have 4 arcs (2 lower level, 2 higher level). You only have to complete the first to get patron pool access. You have to do all 4 to unlock the ability to start the Lord Recluse Strike Force...

For the record, you were completely right.

    Long story short: MySQL SUCKS!

Due to MySQL not liking spaces after commas in "set" columns, and also due to it silently ignoring data it considers invalid rather than actually, you know, printing an error message, City of Data was not showing affected entities other than the first.

So Entropic Aura does actually have Caster listed as an affected entity, which is how it's able to provide mez protection when no enemies are in range. It was that line of thinking that made me question if the power was working correctly and double check. It is also the reason for the explicit test on the debuffs.

So thanks for making me think about this one, the issue might have gone unnoticed otherwise. 382 powers were just fixed to display correctly.

Right, I meant that as a response to the OP's "can this be done question?" as far as having a list of people you know who are online. Presumably opt-in.

Maybe it was a "Why can't Paragon Studios do this?" question in disguise, I dunno.
