Am I the only one that plays the game to have fun anymore?
Or did I miss the memo saying that it's all about how fast you can get your shinies?
The quoted statement (not meant as an attack btw, Uberguy) is one of the major problems I have with the game these days. Everyone is concerned with how much DPS they do, or how fast they can run this TF to get the most reward possible in the shortest amount of time. The game has gone from a fun pastime to an exercise in efficiency.
"Oh, I'm not going to run that Task Force because I can get more stuff for running this other one twice with 2 different characters."
It shouldn't be about getting more stuff, it should be about having fun doing it. When people start YELLING at their teammates for not being fast enough with something, the point of doing it in the first place has been completely lost. -
Question for you:
If the power Aim didn't exist at all, if it were never in any of the other blast sets, would you be saying "This powerset needs an accuracy and damage boosting power on a long recharge that lasts for 10 seconds" ?
Or are you saying it needs Aim simply because other powersets have it?
Oedipous Tex has a point, looking at powersets as nothing but a collection of numbers doesn't say everything about them. You even said yourself that Dual Pistols has some good points.
A powerset does not have to be mathmatically superior in order to be fun to play. If that were the case, everyone would be playing whichever set was determined to be numerically the best.
Personally, I kind of LIKE the fact that Dual Pistols doesn't have Aim. I skipped both Aim and Build Up on my fire/fire and ice/elec blasters and actually have more fun with the characters without them than I ever did with them. I didn't like waiting to attack because Aim and Build Up weren't recharged yet, and basically having my entire play session revolving around 2 powers that I was told I'd be gimping myself if I didn't have them and use them every time they are up. Maybe I wasn't putting out the best DPS I possibly could....but I didn't really care.
I'm not an authority on how to play the game, hell I'm not really much of an authority on anything. But I do know that your average player just wants to play the game and have fun doing it, and doesn't really care that they could be putting out more DPS by doing this instead of that, or that Dual Pistols not having Aim is apparently a problem.
When I decide what powersets I want to play I consider a few things.
Is it visually appealing?
If not, can I customize it to be visually appealing?
Are the animations cool?
Can I come up with an interesting character with this set?
Does it have any cool/unique mechanics in it?
Does this set flow well in combat?
All those things add up into "fun to play"
I have NEVER asked "Does this set have Aim?" in deciding what set to play. And I can't imagine that all that many people do asked that question.
I'm getting the feeling that the devs are trying to get away from every set relying on the crutch of Aim and/or Build Up. Look at some of the sets that have come out recently: Dual Blades has the same mechanic as Claws for damage boosting, Kinetic Melee has Power Siphon, Dual Pistols doesn't have Aim. They gutted Blaster Psi Blast in order to cram Aim into it (still widely regarded as a bad move from what I see, only PvPers really seem to like it) Not a whole lot of the more recent powersets have Aim or Build Up (with the exception of stalker melee sets, those will probably always have Build Up)
Really, putting Aim into a set seems kind of like a cop out:
"I can't think of a 9th power for this set!"
"Is it a blast set?"
"Yeah!"
"Just put Aim in it and the players will never know we couldn't think of anything else to add!"
So, in short, I disagree that Dual Pistols not having Aim is a problem. -
Quote:Blasters, Corruptors, Defenders, and Masterminds all have archery sets. (Masterminds have the attacks as part of the Ninjas primary)
One more thing...I love archers in most games and saw in a CoH photo that there's someone with a bow. So I take it you can be an archer in this game? If so, I'm gonna have to make me a Hawkeye.
One thing of note though: Yuo can make an archer that is similar to Hawkeye, but he can't actually BE Hawkeye. We're not allowed to make copyrighted/trademarked characters. If you make Hawkeye (Or Iron Man, Batman, Superman, Wolverine, etc.) the character will have it's name and costume stripped (they give you the opportunity to rename it for free though) Long story short, Marvel sued NCSoft because people were making their characters in the game, which was indirectly causing NCSoft to earn money from Marvel's intellectual property. The suit was settled (no, no one here knows the result of that suit) and since then they have cracked down quite a bit on copyrighted characters.
Not trying to scare you off, just giving you a friendly warning so you don't go to log in and see "GenericHero 3424088" with a plain costume
Welcome to the city, hope you have a good stay! -
Quote:THANK you for explaining basic cone mechanics to me. <sarcasm off> I SAID it was a matter of me convincing MYSELF. If I don't do it right, it doesn't FEEL like AoE. MY problem. MAYBE an issue for others. Not everyone is a CoH god like you.
Gee, someone's cranky today.
I was just trying to be helpful and you come back with a boatload of snark.
Guess I'll just go back to being a dick, at least then I'd DESERVE responses like this.
How about you spend a couple seconds trying to figure out someone's intentions before biting their head off next time?
For all I knew you had never fired off Ripper in a crowd and didn't realize it hit more than one target. You'd be surprised what some longtime players don't know, I learn new stuff all the time. And I don't get insulting when people try to help me with something they didn't realize I already knew. -
Quote:Umm, no, that argument just plain makes sense. Theres no "Until" involved. And that argument makes sense. Until you realize that there's no reason for the set to not have Aim, that is.
If you don't like it, don't play it. Play something you DO like instead of complaining on the forums about a set you probably still won't play anyway. -
Quote:Ripper will hit 5, reliably so if you get them packed in tight, which is the same as every other melee cone (Flashing Steel, Slice, Eviscerate, Sweeping Strike, Jacob's Ladder, Shadow Maul, Crowd Control, Pendulum, though I think the last 2 might hit more targets)I've never been able to "convince" myself that Ripper was an AoE. As far as I can tell, Quills and the wide arc of Throw Spines are the only things that make it all that AoE-ie.
50 Spines/Dark
50 Spines/Fire
45 Spines/Regen
12 Spines/Electric
Hitting more than one target makes things AoEs by definition, so Ripper is an AoE by those standards. It also takes PBAoE damage sets. Technically, Head Splitter and Golden Dragonfly are AoEs as well, but they are a lot harder to hit more than one target with because their cone is so narrow. -
Quote:Umm....you should make sure you know what you're talking about before you laugh at people.seriously, is that a joke build?
All of those Panacea Sets, lol!!! The plus recharge is only in PVE not PVP, so if you want +recharge don't go with Panacea for that purpose.
See, I bolded the relevant part in the thread title.Quote:Fire/Regen Build for PVP
Seeing as how the build is intended for PvP, the Panaceas are a perfectly reasonable set to slot. You clearly don't understand how the PvP sets work. They have one set of bonuses in PvE, and BOTH sets of bonuses in PvP. So, you will still get the recharge bonus in PvP plus whatever the PvP bonuses are. (that's a big part of why the PvP sets are so sought after by the PvP crowd, because they give you twice the bonuses when you're in PvP)
(this is of course, unless something has changed a great deal from what I remember) -
My Spines/Fire took off after I had Quills, Blazing Aura, and Stamina, and had it slotted with SOs.
Yes, it's single target damage sucks, but it's one of few sets that you can get through missions with by literally just standing there. Multiple damage auras rock, so I would pair it with Fire (which just got loads better), Electric, or Dark (classic combination)
Since you kept deleting them by level 10 you haven't witnessed the awesome that is Throw Spines followed by jumping into a mob and hitting Spine Burst while your auras tick away. (Also of note, with Quills running, your spines stay out, so it eliminates the majority of the redraw when you do things like hit a heal) -
Quote:You team with idiots.I just want my Spines/Ninjitsu and Elec/Ninjitsu toons to actually have a chance to join a S/TF (Not to mention a MoS/TF) without being laughed at.
Try any TF global channel and you will always see TF looking for Brute/Scrapper/Tank or Damage--Cept when you tell them you are a stalker team is full.
None of the global channels I have ever been on have ever turned down a stalker for a team for anything, leading me to believe that either A) You hang out on some crappy global channels, or B) You're talking out of your butt.
Since I've seen your rants on how broken stalkers are, I'm inclined to think option B is the case here.
Have a nice day. -
Quote:Sorry, I keep forgetting that some people don't like anything different in any of their powersets, and would rather the game remain "Push button, gain XP" forever. It isn't so much a case of it gimping the set, more or a case of "Well, it's a blast set, and blast sets have Aim, this blast set is broken because it doesn't have Aim."Uhm....maybe Defenders and Corruptors are in "dire need" of AIM...simply because...they are DEFENDERS and CORRUPTORS and have access to a HUGE array of buffs/debuffs....which not only increase your chances of hitting your targets vastly, but also grant you AND your team greatly increased damage output and survivability....
that...is why Defenders and Corruptors can both get away with having more Blast Sets which do not contain...AIM. Blasters, on the otherhand...shouldn't leave home without it, and I feel that both DP and AR are somewhat handicapped thanks to their lack of Aim. I like the idea behind Swap ammo...but to lose Aim in order to get it? I dunno...
If you don't like the fact that Dual Pistols doesn't have Aim....don't play it. Nowhere in any rules I have ever read regarding this game does it say every player has to love every powerset. That's kind of why we have choices of what powerset to play. If everyone were expected to enjoy the same thing, there would be only one powerset. So, instead of complaining how underpowered Dual Pistols is without Aim, go play something else and let the people who enjoy Dual Pistols continue to enjoy it. -
Quote:Nope. Why are pre-ordered GR fans not able to get the free month? If you purchase the expanded complete GR edition at $6.99 do you get it then, considering it's on par with the regular $39.($35 preorder then $7 expansion) which comes with a free month?
You got Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning early. You got that instead of the free month.
The people that weren't playing with Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning 6 months ago? They go the free month when they bought the Complete Collection.
Seems pretty fair to me, you got some stuff earlier than other people, so you missed out on the free month. Can't have em both. -
-
Not necessarily.
My main's build hs been through so many respecs it's not even funny.
My 3 vetspecs, all 3 earned respecs, a couple respec recipes that dropped for me, and every freespec since issue 8.
That's a LOT of respecs. And each time it was for a minor tweak to something or to shuffle a few slots around. I haven't done any major changes to his build in a while. -
Quote:Castle or BaBs are usually pretty helpful, I've gotten good responses from both. Now that Going Rogue is live their workload is (probably) a little lighter than it was for the past few months. Mod08 will probably give you an answer as well.Who's good to PM? I've PM'ed before and gotten no or very late responses

I know they're busy.

If the Resistance's plans work and they get rid of Cole, then they would very much be heroes. Always keep in mind....history is written by the winners. -

Personally, I LIKE the fact that it's hard as hell to get through in one piece.
I was on the verge of quitting because the game became "Press button = Gain xp"
Then Praetoria came along and it was "Holy crap! I actually have to pay attention again!"
And on the bright side, any new player who makes it through Praetoria is much less likely to become a level 50 perma-noob. -
Quote:So how does the way they talk have any bearing at all on the danger they pose?So I've been told. The game is plenty silly enough as it is. I keep wishing it'd take itself just a tad more seriously. We've already utterly ruined the Freakshow in this precise manner. I still hold the Freakshow War to be the only decent arc they have left. This is the arc that finally explains why the Freakshow are so feared and why they're such a big problems. It describes them as violent murderers and terrorists, it shows Dreck as a ruthless leader, Bile as a violent nutcase and even Upstart, who NEVER SHOWS ANYWHERE as somewhat of a sinister conspirator.
To my eyes, this is what they should be, not slogan-spouting squeak toys to laugh at. They kidnap and murder people.
I think it's actually kind of appropriate that no one takes the Freakshow seriously, right up until they do something utterly horrible and you remember why they were dangerous in the first place.
I mean, this is a group of people deranged enough to turn violence, chaos, murder and destruction into a sporting event. They view a trophy made out of old car parts as justification for murder. The fact that they happen to behave like a collection of internet trolls is actually kind of fitting. -
heh.
After the BotZ nerf, my original build was about 3% away from softcapped. I see how you solved that problem, but I'm not going to be acquiring a Gladiator's Armor 3% piece anytime soon. -
You also get access to Tenebrous Tentacles (called Soul Tentacles) and Electric Fences. My Ice/Electric blapper will probably be getting Electric Fences.
-
Quote:Negative. Mace Mastery for Scorpion Shield. Smashing, lethal AND Energy defense, and you don't need to take any other powers to get it. (so no need to take an AoE sleep, or a slow toggle, just to get your armor)Go with Ice Mastery instead for Frozen Armor, then you can softcap your S/L defense.
That way, you can still softcap your S/L defense, and if you throw Thunderstrikes in your ranged single target attacks, along with a couple other sets, you can get a good chunk of Energy defense as well. And voila, you have defense to the 3 most common damage types in the game. (Energy defense will help you avoid a good number of mezzes as well, but don't count on that, they seem to slip one through at the worst possible times) -
Quote:Uh, no. No stalker will EVER out-tank a brute using the same set. Brutes get more resistance, and they have WAY higher HP (Brute cap is TWICE what the stalker cap is)
That makes me think there is a big mistake with Energy Aura. Brutes are supposed to be the toughest AT on villain-side, but Stalkers have higher defenses in Energy Aura!?
Is this a bug or intentional or what?
What is the point of taking the most defensible class if the weaker class can out-tank it?
The only thing a Brute has over a Stalker is a bit more actual damage resistance in the powers, but that can't make up for the rather large discrepancy in defense strength between the two.
Brutes are always supposed to be more survivable than stalkers, not the other way around.
If a brute takes 2 hits of 800 each, they will be at about half health. A stalker taking those same two hits is DEAD. That is assuming both are at their respective caps.
Brutes get more resistance out of their toggles than stalkers do, that means the hits that do get through are going to hurt less.
What you're saying doesn't seem very fair. Stalkers already take more damage per hit, and have much fewer HP to soak those hits, and their heal isn't as good (because it is based on your base HP max)....and you're saying that they should be hit more often too?!
I'd say with all the other advantages brutes get in this case, the stalkers kinda deserve the higher defense. Unless of course you're campaigning for stalkers to be made completely useless, instead of the mostly useless they are currently. -
Quote:It would have to be carefully balanced, but there is precedent for it (Drain Psyche)Instead of Life Drain, how about Life Leech?
Does moderate Negative Energy damage, and -Regen to the target hit, while boosting the Blaster's Regen rate.
-Regen and a regen boost don't seem like they'd be too out of line. Maybe -20% regen to the target for an equal boost? Make the -regen unenhanceable, while the boost to you CAN be enhanced. I could see that working. It would make Dark Blast/Energy Manipulation the power combo of choice for AV soloing (IF the -regen is affected by Power Boost)
And for the record, I'm not saying blasters shouldn't get a true self heal, I'm simply stating that I don't think they ever will.
