I put the Posi's Blast proc in mine, it usually goes off on at least a couple in the mob. And keeping them clumped up within range of RttC is nice.

I run an Electric/WP brute. It doesn't get a damage aura to help with AoE, but it survives great with very little attention paid to it. I don't farm myself, but Electric/WP would probably be pretty decent at it (I've been running at +2x6 since level 29)
  2. ClawsandEffect

    My first build

Aett Thorn's build is the better of the two for my purposes, though Hyperstrike's has some good ideas in it.

The addition of the Fighting Pool will help out immensely with survival, I would almost go so far as to say it is mandatory for a Willpower tank. Tanks get more benefit from Fighting than any other AT. They get more S/L resistance from Tough, and more defense out of Weave, which adds to the typed defense you alrady have in Heightened Senses.

Back to what I was saying:

As far as your attacks go, both of the guys that posted builds have the right idea. Kinetic Combat for S/L defense (if you can't afford them, Smashing Haymaker is a workable alternative)

I would slot Foot Stomp with 4 Eradication and 2 Scirocco's Dervish. Several reasons for that. Eradication provides 2 things Willpower wants more of, typed defense and max HP.
Scirocco's Dervish provides 10% regen for just 2 slots, which is another thing WP wants as much of as it can get. Obliteration isn't a bad set, but Eradication/Scirocco's is better suited for Willpower.

You skipped Rage entirely, that is a HUGE mistake for any Super Strength character. Without Rage, Super Strength is among the lower damaging sets available to tanks, with it it gets near the top. I would slot it with a couple recharge IOs and a couple Rectified Reticles for the 1.88% S/L defense it gives for 2 slots.

You said your goal is a team-based agro magnet, and the build you posted would not be very good at that.

RttC is not the best taunt aura (it's actually the worst one available to any tanker), so things are prone to peel away if someone else hits them hard enough. The thing it is very good at is cranking up your regen rate so you can heal back any damage dealt to you. With no heal slotting in it it won't be doing that very well, and like I said earlier, the to-hit debuff slotting in there is just barely this side of pointless.

Both myself and Aett mentioned that the amount of damage you do directly affects how well you hold agro, slotting your attacks for damage will make them more effective at taunting. Also, if the worst happens and there is a team wipe other than you, you will not be defeating anything if you're dealing no real damage. And with the slotting of your survival powers, you probably won't stay on your feet very long yourself.

Another note: You slotted a full set of Panacea in Health. Couple problems with that: A) it is way overslotting that power, and B) Are you aware of how expensive that set is? You're looking at 3-4 billion inf on that one power alone (the proc routinely goes for 2 billion, and the rest of the set is in the 200-500 million range) Unless you actually have several billion influence just sitting around, or already have the full set, I would seriously recommend slotting something else. Health isn't as good as Fast Healing, so that's where I stick the various heal set procs. I'd go with the Numina's unique and the Regenerative Tissue unique. (You're Willpower, so you shouldn't need the extra recovery from the Miracle +Rec proc) There you go, 4 slots saved for better slotting of your attacks. With those extra slots, and the ones you'll be saving by slotting Reactive Armor instead of Titanium Coating, you should be able to slot your Kinetic Combat or Smashing Haymakers.

Hope that helps you out, there's more I could go into, but I've shoved enough information at you for now

PS: Drop Resurgence. If you build more like we're advising, you won't be needing it

PPS: I'll post a build when I get home from work to give you another take on it.
  3. ClawsandEffect

    My first build

You want typed defense, not positional. If you look at Heightened Senses it gives you good defense to Energy/N.Energy/Fire/Cold, and a small amount to S/L. It gives ZERO defense to melee/ranged/AoE.

So, you're getting 1.25% defense to S/L out of those Titanium Coatings you have 6 of slotted in all your resistance powers. You could get the same amount out of FOUR Reactive Armors, and get some E/N defense as well.

Also, 2 of your most important powers are woefully mis-slotted. You have High Pain Tolerance slotted with 6 Titanium Coatings. That is bad for 2 reasons: A) I already explained that you are using 6 slotes to get the same benefit you could get from 4 of a different set, and B) the most important feature of HPT is the fact that it raises your max HP as a passive power (meaning it's always on, giving you the benefit 100% of the time). As such, HPT should be slotted for healing FIRST, and then maybe slotted for a little resistance (I just put 3 Numina's Convalescence and a Steadfast Res/Def in mine)

Second power, Rise to the Challenge. It has the effect of dramatically increasing your regeneration rate, which is fueled by the number of mobs in melee range of you. You didn't slot it for healing at all (which is how you increase the regen rate). Slotting for to-hit debuff is a waste, because A) the amount it debuffs by isn't really worth slotting for, and B) it only affects things in melee range of you (anyone shooting from outside melee range will remain unaffected by it). I would slot that one with Numina's as well (the 2 and 3 slot bonuses are regen and max HP respectively), and if you have a could slots left over, throw a couple generic Taunt IOs in there. RttCs taunt duration is really short, and agro can be pulled off you easily, slottng for taunt will make that harder to do.

Slot your attacks better than they are. Part of how well you can hold agro is how much damage you are dealing to them. Even with attacks slotted for taunt duration, the first time a Fire blaster really opens up on them, they are going to peel right off of you.

I'll have more for you in a couple hours on my next break at work, but your build is in need of serious help.

I PMed Castle a while back with a similar idea.

My idea was an IO to be slotted in resistance powers that has a chance (same as most damage procs) to deal damage to anyone that hits with a melee attack.

He said that it IS possible to do, but it would take up a lot of CPU cycles, and is therefore something he wouldn't allow players to have.

It would take up a lot of CPU cycles because it would have to check for anything that hits you with a melee attack, so there would be a lot of math going on every time you entered melee range (especially with a resistance based set that is hit more often).

(I have no idea what a CPU cycle is, it's the word Castle used for it)

    Here is my original PM:

I'm skipping the whole S&I forums on this one, because I have no idea if the coding is even feasible.

First a little background on where the idea came from.

I have a Fire/Regen scrapper. He is a mutant whose blood combusts instantly on contact with air. So it stands to reason that when he is cut in battle, the resulting blood spray would be on fire. That led me to an IO idea.

An IO that would deal damage to an enemy based on their action toward you. In this case, dealing damage to you would result in damage being dealt to them.

Obviously, if it were automatically dealt it would be overpowered, so I was thinking a low percentage chance (like 5-10%) to deal damage to an enemy within melee range who hits you with an attack flagged as melee.

It would probably have to be a unique, and probably have to be a low amount of damage in order to maintain balance.

It would be similar to a damage proc, which we have a bunch of already, only instead of having a chance to fire when you land a hit on an enemy, it would have a chance to fire when an enemy lands a hit on you.

What I was wondering was, is such a thing even possible to do? It seems like it should be, but there are a lot of things that seem like they should be possible, but aren't.

I don't see a whole lot of balance issues with it. If it were a low damage, low probability, unique proc it would be impossible to abuse. Just something that would add a little flavor to slotting choices.

After finding out whether it is possible I will then post in S&I to find out if such a thing would even be wanted. I dislike wasting time suggesting something only to discover that it's not possible to do with the current game engine, so I'm asking first.

A reply whenever it's convenient would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to you and the rest of the devs for being so accessible to the playerbase.

    And Castle's response:

It's possible, but expensive in terms of CPU cycles. It's not something I'd allow on a player power.
Those were taken word for word from my PM box (I never delete dev communications), so it's probably not going to happen.

Because there's no such thing as an honest desire to compete, right?

Sorry, Tenzhi, I don't generally disagree with you that vehemently. But saying all sports players are bullies is a complete load of crap.

I'm competitive by nature, but I also have a strong sense of fair play. If it weren't for my screwed up knee, I may well have played sports in high school. It wasn't because I wanted to bully people, or prove that I'm the best at something, it was because I wanted to push myself to see what I'm capable of. Because my knee required low-impact activity (no running) the only sport I could take part in was BMX, and that is hardly a bullying environment. Some of the best friends I ever had growing up were the kids I raced against every weekend. We were competing against each other constantly, and we were all friends, largely because of it.

I was running in first place one time when I hit a patch of loose dirt and crashed. The kid in second place actually stopped to make sure I was okay, and sacrificed the opportunity to win the race. If sports were really about bullying people he would not have done that. The well-being of a fellow racer was more important to him than a trophy. That doesn't sound like bullying to me.

What you're essentially saying is that all those little league baseball teams and after school sports kids participate in are bully training, and that is so far from true it can't even SEE true.

The only way I could hit softcap to all 3 types is with Scorpion Shield, and that doesn't accept resistance sets.

I get what your saying, and normally I would do much the same with my blasters (my Sonic/Devices is set up with Aid Self and whatnot), but I set the specific goal of hitting the softcap on this particular character.
  7. Couple points:

I almost never use Aim, that's why it is so late in the build. It's there strictly as a mule for a couple Rectified Reticles.

Bitter Freeze Ray is a mule for a set of 4 Basilisk's Gaze. I don't really have any plans on using it, but I suppose it will come in handy if I want to hold a boss at range. The Basilisk's Gaze gives me 2.5% Energy/N.Energy defense for 2 slots, and 7.5% recharge for 4.

Since the build is softcapped to the 3 most common damage types, I should be able to spend more time in melee, making Lightning Field worth the pick for me (it will also help keep things drained after a Power Sink)

I haven't taken a travel power on a character other than Fly (for concept) since I got the Martial Arts pack. I've found Ninja Run is just fine for 99% of situations. Super Jump is in there mostly because there really wasn't anything else I wanted. The only time I won't be able to use Ninja Run is for Master TF runs, which I will be at 50 for and have access to SJ.

Fighting and Leadership are in there because A) I couldn't have hit the softcap to all 3 types without them, and B) they give me room for a couple more LotGs. Tough gives me a place for the Steadfast Res/Def.

Leadership means I bring something else to a team besides just damage. I help out a little bit with defense, and boost everyone's damage a little bit by running Assault. Since I don't have any AoEs other than Blizzard, I figured it'd be nice to bring something to the table.

My build is very much aimed at hitting the softcap to S/L/E, which I succeeded in, without really gimping myself in the process, which I was happy with. Probably does just boil down to playstyle differences.

Where'd all this money come from?
6+ years of people killing stuff.

Since there aren't really any good money sinks in the game, it just keeps piling up.

If there aren't ever any good money sinks ever introduced, it will eventually cost you 2 billion inf to buy anything worth buying.

The gap between the obscenely rich and dirt poor is just going to keep growing. Unfortunately, I'm in the latter category, since I have limited play time these days, and I don't want to spend what little time I DO have to play marketeering or farming.

I basically pretend purples and PvP IOs don't even exist when I build a character, saves me a lot of frustration because I'll never be able to afford enough of them to outfit a character. I can slowly put together builds with some of the other high-dollar stuff, but there's no way I'm paying 200m+ for ONE recipe. I can put together most of a build for that budget, it just seems stupid to drop that much on one IO and then have to do the same for the other 4.

Thanks to the lack of money sinks allowing prices to skyrocket, the casual player either has to farm, play the market, or do without. Because they sure as hell aren't going to be getting that stuff the "normal" way.

There is no such contact in Praetoria. The only way to get a jetpack is to craft one, you can email a recipe and the salvage to the character, and I think there's somewhere to craft it, but I'm not sure where.
  10. Generally +1 or +0 x8. My brute is DM/SR, so I don't like to up the mob level too much or it just takes him too long to kill them. He has Mu Mastery, with a Posi's Blast proc in ELectrifying Fences, so he puts out decent AoE damage, but if they are orange or tougher I just stand there spamming AoEs and punching stuff for way too long for my taste.

Well, except for the fact that they probably don't want emails used in such a way. It probably wouldn't be TOO difficult to code, but since we didn't get this feature with the global email feature, I would surmise that they didn't have any intention of email being used to bypass the market, since it would pretty effectively eliminate the inf sink that market fees provide.

I would say that if you choose to use the email system to bypass the market, you will have to continue to do so at your own risk.

If you get either of those two missions right before you have to log out, it results in a failed mission, rather than having the mission to come back and do later.

I've had that happen before. I ended up with the Shadowhunter mission, while being unaware that it was now TIMED. I had to log out right away due to real life concerns, and ended up failing a mission that was now timed, and was NOT timed the last time I had run it.

I'd call that negatively impacting my play.

No, because that would mean you would get 2 copies of the Fitness powers.

What happens is your character remains exactly the same until you respec it. Upon respeccing, you will get Fitness as an inherent power and lose access to the pool as choosable powers.

New characters will get Fitness as an inherent automatically.
  17. ClawsandEffect

    Taunt?

My brute took Taunt as his level 49 power (mostly because I needed a power that I didn't have to slot).

Since I only really use it on TFs (pulling the healing Nictus away on ITFs is one thing I've used it for), losing it below level 44 doesn't really hurt me, since I lose my softcap when I drop below 47 anyway.

It's skippable, but nice to have for the situations where you need to pull agro off squishies and can't run over there to punch 'em. (The enemy mobs, not the squishies )

But, farming HAS caused things in the non-AE game to be changed.

Dreck's map is now timed, it didn't used to be.
Comm Officer portals no longer give XP.
Portal-spawned Behemoths no longer give XP.
High level Family mobs got their rewards reduced.

All of those things are verifiably true, so farming HAS had a negative impact on the game, because it seems the devs would rather the players not stop at one mission and run nothing else for the rest of that character's career.

Do I, personally, have an issue with farming? Not really, but when it's taken to the point that it starts to get things changed in a negative way I start getting a little annoyed with it.

If you happen to enjoy farming, go for it. As long as what you're doing doesn't impact MY playing, I won't care. If you farm something to the point that the devs feel the need to alter it, THEN I might have an issue with it.

As far as the OP's question goes, any of those powersets should do well. I also suggest perhaps spines/fire scrappers as well.

I suspect this is completely intentional. The devs are fully aware of the tactic of herding stuff up and annihilating it with massed AoEs, so they designed an enemy group that tactic doesn't work on.

Knockback is a good thing here, make friends with Energy blasters. If the Ghoul is KBed out of range of his buddies, he won't heal them when he dies.
