  1. If you're not actually having endurance problems, the Spiritual Alpha path would work better for you.

You get more recharge, so you get Shield Charge and Foot Stomp recharging faster.

And you get more healing, which on the surface seems useless, until you realize that it adds an SO's worth of healing enhancement to every power that can accept it. That means it will be further enhancing True Grit, giving you more HP.

Provided your endurance consumption is under control, that's what I'd go with.

The store you're thinking of is Holsten Armitage, he's the Science store. The mission you run for him unlocks it.

Okay, imagine that you can't fly. Suddenly, in the middle of a fight you find yourself floating 10 feet above the ground. Let's see how accurate YOU are

Remember in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer when Sue ends up with Johnny's powers and starts floating up in the air because she doesn't know how to control the flight, having never done it before? That's kind of why there's an accuracy penalty I think, because someone who ordinarily does not fly will have difficulty hitting with their attacks because of the unaccustomed movement.

Exactly this. Fire Sword is indeed tagged Fire, Lethal, Melee. It will use the highest defense you have, so if you have 45% Lethal, 30% Fire, and 35% Melee, it will use the value for Lethal to determine whether it hits you or not.
  5. My Sonic/Devices has Gun Drone, and I usually just pull it out for EB/AV fights. It's damage is very nice when it is being buffed by the -res in my attacks, and only has one target to shoot at.

My only real complaint is it's targeting priority sucks. If there is an AV and a lowly minion, it will almost always choose to shoot the minion when I need the extra damage on the AV.

It also gives a HUGE defiance boost when you summon it.

Correct. But a LotG costs 2 Hero Merits, where it would cost you 240 reward merits to buy it direct, and probably 150-200 million to buy with influence (and that's just ONE)

and how can i tell what is a purple or not. like, what makes it different?
You know how IO recipes have different colors to them? Like, Common IOs are white, uncommons are yellow (like Crushing Impact) rares are orange (like your Miracle). Well, they're called purples because they ARE purple. When one drops you have the words "Recipe Found" flash across your screen, and it will be in purple letters. And instead of being white, yellow, or orange, the name of the recipe will be in purple.

They are super rare recipes that you have to be level 50 to slot. But, anything that can drop a level 50 common IO recipe (which only exist at levels divisible by 5) can drop a purple. So, any enemy that is level 47 or higher can possibly drop a purple.

It will be expensive if you buy all of it at the consignment house. But you have other options.

What I would do: Run lots of tip missions to get Hero Merits (provided you have Going Rogue). Use the Hero Merits to get the extremely pricey items, like LotG +Recharges and the Numina's and Miracle uniques.

You also might get a purple drop too, which will potentially double your funds.

Play the character a lot over double xp weekend. After you hit level 50 you will get double the influence for each kill.

You can learn to play the market, but if you're anything like me you won't like it much. I prefer playing City of Heroes to playing City of Stockbrokers.

Above all else, don't think you have to get everything in the build RITE NAO!! Take your time with it and play the character, adding a set or two here and there as you can afford them. That way you still get to enjoy playing the character, and you can gradually watch him become more awesome as you add stuff.

    THIS.

I once ran an STF with a doofus that didn't know what enhancements were, and it took him 15 minutes to figure out the TF didn't start in Atlas Park.

Players should level at least their first character the "hard" way so they have some idea how the game works.

Oh, and that player on the STF? He ragequit the team halfway through the first mission because he died. Turns out that was the first time anything had actually fought back.

One catch: I get to decide for myself which character I bring, and I'm not playing by fiteklub rules, so if I bring a ranged character you can't complain about it.

If you're really that good, you shouldn't have a problem taking out a defender, right?

Edit: Just for the record, if you can't beat ME, then your claim of taking out "really tough people" will be proven to be a lie, because I'm a lightweight in the Pinnacle PvP crowd. I'd love to see what happens if one of Pinnacle's big dogs decides to take you on.

    No.

It's too easy to level there already, and the devs would have to be insane to double that.

Regular missions only. But hey, look on the bright side, if you run a couple ITFs you'll get more XP than all but the most exploitive AE farms AND you might get some good drops while you're at it.

Personally, I plan on getting some of the signature TFs out of the way this weekend so I can level through them and get TFC.

True Grit shouldn't be taken because it is a resistance power, it should be taken because it is a MAX HP POWER, and slotted accordingly. I only ever give it token resist slotting if I can spare the slots, I ED cap heal enhancement to give me as many extra HP as possible. By skipping it entirely, you have decided to have close to 500 HP less than you COULD have.
  13. They'll work exactly the same as they do in a passive power for as long as you have RttC toggled on.

If you have the power's other needs taken care of, and have a couple slots left over, go ahead and put some procs in it, it won't hurt anything and you shouldn't notice much difference between that and slotting them in a passive.

The downside is RttC can be detoggled if you get mezzed, so if you want to make sure those procs are working no matter what a passive power would be a better bet.

That's if you're talking about the procs from the Heal sets.

If you're talking about the procs from the to-hit debuff sets, then no, they aren't worth it.

I'm afraid if I specced into S/L I'd actually have to work or pay attention in the farms...lol
If the only thing you plan on EVER doing with this character is farm, that will work just fine.

If you want to do anything else S/L will be better for you.

1)Fiery Aura has no defense debuff resistance. 2)Machine guns debuff defense. 3)There are a LOT of machine guns in the game. 4)Melee defense is useless against machine guns.

If you go into any mission that contains machine gun users you will find that all that melee defense you devoted slotting to is going to disappear in a hurry. You'll still lose your defense eventually, but S/L defense will mean it takes longer.
  15. Whats with the lack of recharge in Power Siphon in all those builds? Is it unaffected by recharge enhancement? If not you should try to squeeze a common recharge IO in there.
  16. Some tips I didn't have time to post in my first post (I'm posting from work on my break):

Your primary goal with any Shield Defense build is to reach the softcap on defense. If you're not sure what the softcap is, it is 45%. Most NPCs you will be fighting have a base 50% chance to hit you, and the lowest the game will allow that chance to go is 5%. So, if you get your defenses to 45%, their chance to hit you will be as low as it will ever get.

There are 2 schools of thought on doing that with a Broadsword/Shield character.

    1) Softcap using set bonuses, Weave, Maneuevers, Combat Jumping, etc. and drop Parry from your build altogether.

    2) Use Parry to help you softcap to melee attacks, and focus your slotting on Ranged and AoE. The theory here being that if you aren't IN melee range of anything, you don't need melee defense, and if you ARE in melee range, it is pretty easy to just open your attack chain with Parry and get your defense at the same time. Ideally, you still want your melee defense to be at or slightly above 30%, so you only need to use Parry once to softcap.

I'm a fan of option 2. If you go with option 1, you are pretty much committed to spending most or all of your slotting chasing defense bonuses. Option 2 loosens that up a bit so you can get other things that will come in handy, like recharge bonuses and Max HP bonuses.

Now, some of the sets *I* use to do that aren't very popular, but I've found they work for me. I like 6 slotting Eradication in my PBAoE attacks, such as Slice, Whirling Sword, and Head Splitter. You won't be doing as much damage as you could be with those attacks, but Against All Odds will make up for that. I like Eradication because it has one of the best colections of set bonuses available for PBAoEs. It gives: 1.8% Max Endurance, 1.56% ranged defense (the closer you get to the softcap, the more little bonuses like this matter), 2.25% max HP (since you have a power that increases max HP, getting more of it is a good idea), and the 6 slot bonus is 3.13% AoE defense.

The Red Fortune sets in your defense toggles are actually exactly what I would use.

I'd also 6 slot several of my single target attacks with Mako's Bite for the ranged defense it offers.

I would slot Shield Charge with 6 Obliteration. You will be getting plenty of bonuses from 3 sets of Eradication, but don't forget you want your melee defense to be at least 30% as well, and Obliteration gives you 3.75% melee defense for 6 slots, and it gives you some recharge as well.

I'd slot True Grit with 3 Numina's Convalescence, which will give you 12% regeneration and 1.88% more max HP. I wouldn't worry too much about slotting it for resistance, you already have the Steadfast Protection Res/Def in there, put a Steadfast Res/End in it and call it good. You want Numina's Heal, Heal/End, and Heal/Rech.

You put the Miracle unique in Physical Perfection, which is a good idea. I'd pull the Energy Manipulations out, and put Performance Shifter End Mod and the +End in their place. In the third slot, put the Numina's Convalescence unique.

Put Luck of the Gambler sets in Weave and Maneuvers. I'd use Defense, Def/End, and the +7.5% recharge (which also boosts your defense a bit) The 7.5% Recharge ones will be expensive, but you can get them for 2 Hero Merits (assuming you have Going Rogue), so they aren't hard to get that way. I'd put at least 3 in each power, but if you can fit 4 in, you should.

Pull the 3 piece Perfomance Shifter out of Stamina and replace it with the Chance for +End proc.

Drop Assault and Focused Accuracy. Pick up Tactics and open Body Mastery with Conserve Power instead. Take the Gaussian's set you have slotted in Focused Accuracy and put it in Tactics instead. Focused Accuracy is an end hog and it isn't that great, Tactics costs less end and benefits your whole team instead of just you.

Take Build Up sooner. (You can also put the Gaussian's set in Build Up if you want, I do it frequently if I'm running out of power choices) If you ever exemp this character down, you're going to want the ability to hit stuff harder.

Now, these are just what *I* would do with a Broadsword/Shield character. In fact I'm leveling one right now and plan to do exactly what I've advised here. I'm sure there will be differences of opinion, but most people will probably agree that I'm giving solid advice here. (the biggest difference of opinion is probably going to involve my advice to use Eradication)

Now, my suggestions here will be quite a bit more expensive than the build you posted, but you can work toward it gradually, and not feel like you have to buy it all right now.

Hope this gives you a better idea of what you need to shoot for with your character. BS/Shield is a fun combination that doesn't give up any top end performance in return for smooth leveling like some combos.

Depends on if you buy it all as crafted enhancements, or as recipes, or spend merits on stuff. If I had to guess, I'd say the build as it is will run you around 350 million altogether.

    Quote:
Can I start this build even tho im level 47?, considering you can use so's within 3 levels of the level on the enhancement
Fixed that for you, and yes you can start it at 47 if you plan on putting level 50 IOs in it. IOs work the same as SOs, with the exception of purple sets, those you HAVE to be level 50 to slot.

    Quote:
can the kismet , energy manipulator, and mircale sets still be used even tho they are a lower level enhancement? will i still get the set bonus and each individual bonus?
Yes to all. It doesn't matter if you are higher level than the IOs are, they will work exactly the same forever. The only time they'll stop working is if you exemp BELOW the level of the IO for a task Force or something.

    Quote:
i made all of this on mid'heros so im not sure... and id prefer not to spend a lot of money for it to not work...
Do you like the character NOW? If you do, you will still like him after you slot this build. It's not a great build by any means (which isn't an insult, it takes a while to get good at building characters, and this is better than most first attempts I've seen), but it IS an improvement over SOs. It doesn't look like you actually gimped anything, so the set bonuses you are getting should be an improvement.

The only thing you should REALLY do is slot Parry like an attack. If you're planning on using it to keep your melee defense up, it's going to hurt your damage output. Not slotting it to actually DEAL damage will only hurt it more, and it needs to hit to do anything at all.

If I get a chance when I get home from work, I'll throw you a sample build to give you an idea of the basic needs of a BS/Shield character. So, again, it's not a great build, but it isn't horrible either, it should function just fine for you, but it can definitely be improved on.
  18. I'm giving it a 1.5, just because it made me laugh.

For the record, you now have the dubious honor of having posted the worst Anything/Regen build I have seen yet. That is of course, assuming that you are actually serious. (I'm not trying to be a jerk, just honest, it really IS that bad)

And because you asked, /Regen benefits the most from the Spiritual Incarnate path. Boosts recharge and healing, both things /Regen wants more of.

This can happen with ANY set.

I couldn't even begin tell you how many times my Broadsword/Dark Armor scrapper has died because I needed to hit Dark Regeneration but I was in the middle of Head Splitting at the time.

My Claws/Regen used to die frequently before they got rid of the ridiculous pause at the end of Follow Up.

Any power set that has any animations at all that are 2 seconds or more can have the problem of not being able to heal when it needs to.

  21. Softcapping Melee AND Smashing/Lethal probably isn't going to happen. Well, it might be possible, but you're going to have to gimp your character badly in other areas to pull it off. Example: In order to get the set bonuses you will need to get there, you will be sacrificing a lot of slots that could have been used for more recharge.

I'd say choose whether Melee or S/L is more important to you. I'd be inclined to say you'll get more mileage out of S/L, because there are a crapton of defense debuffing machine guns in the game that melee defense won't do anything to protect you from.

    Fire / Thorn

From what limited experience I have with Fire Control, it seems Fire Cages is a lot more useful for Controllers than Doms. It gives a quick and easy Containment boost and makes sure things stay put so you can kill them quicker.

Dominators A) Don't get Containment, and B) Deal enough damage with their secondaries that they don't really need it.

Is there certain secondaries that make AV-soloing easier? Completely thinking: Softcapped Smash/Lethal is a must for any test like this, maybe high recovery from Willpower or layer defenses from Invulnerability?
It will probably be easiest with SR, Shield, Invuln, and WP. Softcapped S/L defense won't help against AVs like Mother Mayhem or Malaise, or any AV that fires pure energy damage attacks (like Synapse or Positron), so you will want either lots of positional defense, or a good amount of defense across the board.

Basically, you only need 2 things to solo an AV with any AT: Enough damage to kill it, and the ability to survive the fight.

Stone Melee has enough damage, and the 4 secondaries I listed can be built to survive the fight relatively easier than the rest.

You're right. It would be MUCH better for them to wait 2 years until everything is done and release it all at once, while giving us nothing in the meantime.

They release things in small chunks like this because it would take WAY too long between new things to do if they released it in bigger chunks. MMOs start bleeding off subscribers if they go too long without anything new to do.

Honest question: Would you rather get a couple new things to do several times a year, or wait up to 2 years for ANYTHING new? Because that's pretty much the choice the devs have in front of them: Release a little bit as it gets finished, or make their players wait for potentially years between content releases.

Yes, Going Rogue was a paid expansion. But, the stuff we got right away is not the entirety of the expansion. They will continue releasing content for people who bought Going Rogue along with their regular issue releases. I really hope it doesn't turn into "You have to have Going Rogue to get anything decent with issue releases", but time will tell on that one.

I realize you were probably not being entirely serious there, but releasing more stuff at once translates directly into a longer wait between content releases. Personally, I would rather get something small a few times a year than something big every year or two.

This is something new players sometimes don't realize. They say something in Broadcast and get frustrated that they don't get any response when they are someplace that not a lot of people go to. If no one else is in the zone, no one heard you say it.

If you are in Boomtown, for example, and you say something in Broadcast, it is very likely that no one in the entire game will hear you (Boomtown is notoriously dead).
