I actually have some notes for a "farm story" mission... I figured if I ever posted it in the game no one would play it and I'd get flamed here on the forums because it's a comedy (full of puns like my ol' BUNNYGIRLS! arc) but it seems that everyone here now thinks comedy arcs kill kittens. Plus, people hate farms and farmers as well. Seeing how I'm running out of slots anyways, I'll probably never get around to making it, so FEAR NOT. (FLAME NOT too plz)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

And not in cotext of Heraclea's post: I liked a lot of what Freem had to say - although a search feature as strong as YouTube's (or Google's) would be better than what we have now, which is just using simpler terms like "Comedy", "Drama", etc. For example, I can search for "Dr. Who fanmade trailer 2010" on YouTube; in AE I just get to click "Science Fiction" and hope for the best. I'm guessing such a robust search would be too resource-heavy though.
  2. Perfectly timed delivery as I needed to wrap some Christmas gifts this morning (instead of logging in, yes... sigh...)!

    Everyone one a winner, here.

You can have a LOT of fun in there with higher level toons (say 30+ to be on the safe side) as custom-made critters can be a tough fight. But it can be really hard to find something worth playing in there by yourself. Rather than trying random arcs (which will net you nothing, most likely), try some of those listed in this thread :

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=127939

    Or this one:

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=217207

These are arcs that a number of people have played, given feedback on, etc. so they can be considered to be 'vetted' as worth taking a gander at. Of course what one person likes you might not, but you can be sure none of these will be abandoned arcs that never got finsihed, broken farms (meaning the exploits it used were fixed but the author never took it down after that), downright insulting in some manner, etc.

  5. I think it is just something you have to accept about the set or move to another. I recently was playing a bubble defender, and while the crazy eye-rolling rabid cries of "SB MEH!" didn't flow as often, it wasn't all that different when it came to handing out the bubbles, I just did it because I knew the team would be more effective (and bubbles has two powers to apply per team member to boot).

It's been awhile since I've played a Kin, but I just don't mind standing in the back a lot and dealing out the SB while people wipe up the floor with the mobs - it's a heck of a lot less stressful than having some angry Freakshow breathing down your squishy neck.
  6. When they first announced the jack-o-lantern helmet with the Halloween event (back whenever that was), I made toon especially for that - how many other toons might just happen to wear such a thing, really? He was something of a techie-themed toon so it didn't get old for me; maybe if I had made him 100% Halloween all the time he might have, but I doubt it. This year I made a black cat toon for Halloween though and I'm still enjoying playing him.

In both cases it doesn't hurt that they play like awesome on toast.
  7. My fave example of this from the olden days when the set-up was different was a 50 doing this late one night on Cap. He was spawning top level mobs from these things then running off to the next one, leaving every single present-spawning point on the map unusable for anyone else. I asked him to stop please and he got huffy about it of course.

I'm really glad we can make player notes now, I plan to one-star anyone I see doing this so I can avoid them in the future.

But I don't think the existence of 4-star oblivion is their fault in the slightest. I also question how much power a few people have over whether your arc "makes it" or not - if anything, you'd have to blame them and the "slavish followers of their opinion", which I think just getting into silly territory. Remember, only a small percentage of players read these forums.

It was just a thought, nothing more nothing less. Those "arbiters of artistic perfection" at least wouldn't steer you into a farm, an abandoned arc that was never finished or something poorly written. It wouldn't be a guarantee of "artistic perfection" (or whatever), I'd probably not like some of them as well, but it would be a start.

So until the devs decide to devote an employee or two to picking out the better arcs and adjusting the rating system so it has some actual meaning, I just avoid AE now.
My first thought when I hear that (which I have heard a lot in this thread) is something along the lines of "read the forums, there are lots of 'vetted' arcs lists made by players". This of course is a TERRIBLE reply as one shouldn't have to come to the forums to find something, you should be able to do that right there in the game itself.

But the second part of your post got me thinking that maybe the devs should instead choose a "trusted player" (they work for free!) to pick out some of the better arcs and label them as such... somehow. Pull aside List-Maker-X and ask, "give us a list of five good heroic arcs for levels 25-35"... Or something. Anything.

Maybe they could even just look at the lists we make and rubberstamp a few of them.

Grrr/Sigh. None of that will ever happen of course. First they have to go through an arc with a fine-toothed comb to make sure there's nothing copyrighted in it. I can imagine that is a pretty time-consuming process which is why we've seen so few dev choices.

And yet I still throw away hours of game time working on my next arc when I could be bashing instead!

Read my animated avator - it's a sometimes-reviled bit from Doctor Who, if you don't know.
  12. I list salvage that's not eminently sell-able at 5 and I've found I usually get far more for them as the sales average out than I would have vendoring it (I'm way too cheap to just delete it outright).

I should try that with some recipes as well, judging from this thread. Plus when I've dumped some for like 555 I get the good feeling of getting someone something they wanted, even if it only goes for 555. (I hope that doesn't make me less ebil somehow, not that I'm firmly in that camp anyways... marketeering is just too dull for me to really get into anymore).

Seriously though, what Schlu said above about finding good arcs to play isn't a half-bad idea as it will keep the boredom of farming at bay. Check out this thread for some awesome arcs:

    Ticket Farming?

I've been told you can find some by using the search term "ticket farm". I know that may sound like sarcasm, but...

    /em spit-take, WHAT?!

I'm a regular here and I didn't know that! No wonder 4-star rating = 'might as well have deleted it'. I can't believe we haven't been repeatedly slapping the devs about this since day one.

There, that should take care of your problem once he gets here.

I was still able to keep playing with that dialogue up, but when I selected option b) it then proceeded to crash. I'm unsure what would have happened if I'd just moved the dialogue to one side and ignored it.
I was getting those rather a lot but haven't lately. I'm not sure if it was before or after i19 hit; if I had to guess I'd say before.

Powers lagging during Rikti raids ("Oh look, my long-charge power is back up!" click.... nothing "Oh wait, I guess not.") are an old, known issue, I've seen threads about that before (and suffered it as well). I seem to recall it was related to something about the button graphics locally determining recharge time vs. the game lagging, making it's computing of time passing slower. Or something like that anyways.

So this problem (not even betraying like they should) is still on-going? Sounds my story may need some work then - much like Pum's.

    Thanks for your answers everyone!

    Cameos for You?!

Here's my Elec/Elec Dom, Maid Of Metal! So yeah, lots of electricity flying around her. As for travel powers, she just ninja-runs everywhere, so...

So nice of you to offer up this opportunity.

Huh, I didn't think we got tips from grays. Man, those guys better watch out from now on.

  23. I seem to recall someone was mentioning here that there's a prob with escorts that betray, being that they then ignore their 'health dialogue' (at half health "Oh ho! You'll not be rid of me yet!", at defeat "You've not seen the last of me, $name!", etc.) - but I can't seem to find it now.

Is this true? I'd like to know before I type in all my sparkling dialogue, only to never see it again. (Actually I just don't want to bother spending time fine tuning it for perfection if no one's ever going to see it. )

If so, I'm guessing that once they betray, then they speak that allotted comment and then hush for the rest of the battle/mish, right?

  25. You realize of course that most of us here are here because we obviously like the game, so we're prone to saying "yes", right?

    That said, YES!
