Quote:I'm not sure if Oskar is a monster or not... I recall he is a socially mal-adjusted certainly and shifts to darker/more monstrous over the course of the story, but seemed to remain a misfit trying to figure out how to be a monster. It is easy to see a lot of him in Hakan...Spoilers below (don't read).
As I understand it, there was a quick scene showing Eli was not all girl so to speak in Let the Right One In. From what I read, many people had real problems with it, and wished it not being in the movie at all. In Let Me In, the scene is changed, and keeps the perspective that Abby's comments about herself being not a girl is that she inferring that she is the monster that she is. She even stops saying it, after Owen learns what she is.
Quote:From what I read about LTROI there are other changes in motivations as well, in LMI, Abby is portrayed as a monster and Owen a good kid being turned to the darkside, while in LTROI Eli is remorseful about what she is, and Oscar is conveyed somewhat as a monster.
Actually, I remember thinking it had some interesting parallel themes with 'Interview with a Vampire'.
Quote:I will watch LTROI myself (though I'm saving it for Halloween), but so far from what I've read, I think I'll like LMI better.
I am looking forward to LMI, I'll probably try to catch it this weekend. -
Quote:The pedophilia or the homosexuality? I thought I addressed both points.
***possible SPOILERS***
My understanding is that the book makes it unavoidably clear that the vampire is not female, but is a disfigured boy. And spends time on the topic as a central theme. And comments about LTROI in a couple sources I remember reading after seeing the movie complain/note that it did not spend as much time on it. Interestingly it appears there were deleted scenes that explored this more, at least according to a quick wikipedia-check.
I hadn't even given any thought to the other. I had just assumed that Eli/Abby had aquired him as a far, far younger individual who had stayed by his/her side throughout his lifetime, and had not thought more explicitly about a pedophilia aspect. I can easily see the new companion being Hakan/Dad in a few decades... -
Quote:Yes, but apparently (and, again, I have yet to read the book) it wasn't 'a scene' so much as a significant element of the novel and some of the commentary re: LTROI was that it was dodged even in that film. From what I hear about the book, the plot element was when Elli (Abby in Let Me In) met Hakan (The Father in Let Me In), which was a lot later than portrayed in the movie. I think the movie version of that element plays out much better.
I also heard that they took out one shock scene from LTROI...well, not really took it out but changed it significantly, since I now know what scene they are talking about and remember the scene in Let Me In. However, from what I read most people had problems with the scene in the first place and thought it was totally needless. So from what I read, it sounds like a good change as well. -
I watched "Let the Right One In" many months ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have meant to, but never got around to reading the novel. It has an actual story, spending some time on actual character development rather than following Hollywood's current breakneck pacing trend.
Quote:For what it is worth, the producers/director of this movie have gone out of their way for months to say they are doing an english language version of the original novel, rather than a remake of the previous movie. Granted, it was the success of the previous movie that prompted this attention...These American remakes smack of pure laziness on the part of filmmakers here. Every other movie now is either a remake or a 3D film. That being said, Let The Right One In was better than the remake in every way.
Still, it is nice that the english version will likely garner additional attention for a worthy story (and help re-darken vampires after all this twilight tween-ishness). EDIT: or not, now that I see the box office figures. *sadness*
Quote:Normally I don't like "remade" movies, especially ones that are based on recent originals. So when I heard "Let Me In" was based on a Swedish film made just 2 years ago I initially figured it was going to be a cheesy knock-off.
I am pleased to hear positive reviews, and I look forward to seeing it.
And notably, I understand both movies manage to dodge a significant plot element from the novel (based on what I have read). -
An Ice/Ice was my first character and first 50.
Fun times, and he still gets a tour of duty periodically.
Play him like an angry controller, and you won't be disappointed.
And I echo the value of Chillblain. -
The purple is nice.
But I don't get all the gold-hate. -
Quote:Relative, schmelative. There's way too many assumptions being made here. Atmosphere, temperature, adequate amounts of water, a magnetosphere capable of blocking out harmful cosmic radiation. It's very poor science to use this term so loosely.
I don't have issues with using relative terms for distance. The universe is too big a place to be so strict on the word "nearby." But habitability is too narrow a range to do so.
Now, properly speaking you are right, it would be better to say Potentially habitable.
But, it is such an exciting prospect/discovery that it is fair to accept it as communicated and not quibble. -
At risk of being accused of thread necro... I also finally watched "District 9".
I found it be an enjoyable film. Hardly Oscar material, but I am glad to have seen it.
Some specific comments:- The mockumentary transition made logical sense in terms of structure. Not sure it was the best approach to the story, but I see what they were aiming to achieve and do not fault the effort.
- The camera work didn't bother me, but I can see how it would disturb some.
- The special effects were awesome.
- Copley's acting for Wikus' character was impressive. He managed to come off as someone I did not feel I would particularly like and yet root for at the same time.
- There are indeed plot holes, some left to be mysterious and minor but some just... fat gaping holes. But that was hardly disturbing enough to ruin the enjoyment of the entertainment.

I told my wife I was going to buy land there for our retirement home...
And then decided I should open an internet company selling deeds there, like those that let you name star, buy a parcel of the moon, etc.
(FYI: she didn't like either idea) -
I watched the show with moderate hope. I was not disappointed, and in fact it exceeded my expectations.
It is in my viewing cycle. -
I am in awe.
Flabbergasted, by a high mag stun of incredulity.
Baka wins. -
Probably a lot of the latter and a combination of being oblivious from not playing as much. I've met players that have been players for years, but play so infrequently or with so many alts that have one or no 50s, and hence limited knowledge of, and little interest in, high end IOs. The real casual players, rather than the average players that get lumped in the casual label.
-
Quote:I'd argue that true casual players aren't in the market for purples in the first place. You have to pay 20 million INF per merit, though, right? About 20 days of tip farming and 400 milliion INF for one recipe? If so, it really doesn't seem to offer much advantage to the casual player over AE farming to buy recipies to craft and sell, then buying the purples off the market. Just an impression.

I did, as I have not slotted for End Mod outside of my aura (since I am consistently draining spawns dry without doing so), but using my attacks was enough to make me look forward to Domination being available more than I liked.
-
very rare. ultra rare, whatever you want to call them, these are 'extra' in terms of build 'need'... the drop rate is probably about right.
They are a 'nice to have', but nothing to worry about for most players, and the new A Merits provide an avenue for those determined to get them. -
Quote:I'm tired and I want to go to bed...Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte... just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named "The Battle of Waterloo" and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us. He swung in low and he saw us... he was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and starts to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened... waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.
One of the best scenes in the history of film. -
Quote:Still a lot of assumptions in your conclusions.I'm not questioning the possibilities merely the canon they have put out. Rikti are just "Rikti" they aren't native of Primal Earth they came here because Nemesis tricked them into attacking us, so if Rikti were on Praetorian Earth they would be the same Rikti. There aren't Primal Earth Rikti or Praetorian Earth Rikti, just Rikti. If they wanna stick to that canon then there shouldnt be a Primal Infernal and a Praetorian Infernal, since he isn't a native to either dimension.
Canon does not, AFAIK, specifically remove the possibility of different parrallel dimensions where Infernal could originate or Rikti develop.
In fact, the possiblity can be inferred for the Rikti because there are clearly Primal and Praetorian Infernals.... And the in game appearance of both of them is about all the canon I need.
EDIT: there is enough difference in Praetoria for the different characters, background, motivation, and origin that I have no assumption that if it happened like X on Primal it has to be Y on Praetoria. -
I got a copy of the trial on disk, installed, and logged on the first time with grand designs to take on the name of one of my favorite characters from when I played the old Marvel Superheroes RPG.
The name was, of course, taken.
I tried a second name I liked from playing that game. It was also taken.
In a huff, I re-rolled into an ice/ice blaster... grabbed a thesaurus and, no, 'Chill' was not available as a name. I really wanted to play, so changed the 'i' to 'y'. I have never looked back. -
-
that is tame and not so insane at all...
Do a search and read Steelclaw's personal character game rules (at run at work so no time to do so myself). That is truly over the top. -
Quote:To be countered with emailing to yourself on an alt server and doing a face to face trade, facilitated via a global channel.
Do all of you seriously think this doesn't happen now?
Right, I outlined that option in my comment. And I know it happens now...
So let it keep happening. Devoting more coding and overhead to the chat/email system to write a second 'mini-market' app seems pointless. -
Quote:Different servers provides a challenge to the second point here, but that isn't even tru as, you could email yourself the item to a character on the same server to do a face to face trade. So an un-needed feature. While i'm not against the idea, I don't think the email system is intended to be a way to bypass Market transactions.
I also see no reason why you couldn't set up an in person trade with whoever you have business with.
Frankly the Market is the intended answer to this sort of thing.
And, no AFAIK there was no clear statement to this effect, but come on, the market is designed the way it is for a reason - transaction fee, blind posting, equal chance for all to bid on available loot.... -
The bosses thing is definitely an eye opener.
I have a tank I love that solos at +0/x8 without breaking a sweat against any type of mob.
I thought I'd run through some tips. When he walked into Carnie and Arachnos tips for the first time it was a big fat helping of "Surprise!" -
Quote:I for one am glad you appreciated the arc, and were able to make a connection with one of your characters and his/her beliefs.... is my favorite ending of a story arc in the game.

I couldn't imagine bringing myself to side with the Resistance after this.
"Too many have already forgotten how hubris nearly destroyed us all."
I have characters that will proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you. I also have characters that are as virulent as the most loathsome crusader or aloofly brutal warden. It is a fine testimony to the quality of Praetoria, and the work of the Dev team.
<aside> I wish everyone was able keep from cluttering threads that appreciates all aspects of the stories and character opportunities in the game like this was some sort of PvP arena.</aside>
