Quote:(semantics. The devs call their extended single missions raids, so I call them raids.)Yeah, I get that. And I want them to add more content that allows you to progress the system that's not tied to Praetoria. I also believe that eventually they'll add it. Just not at launch, because that would likely delay it even more. If we get to the end of the storyline and the end of rolling out the system and the next thing they do is abandon it, absolutely lets revisit this arguement. In the meantime, however, they're not done rolling out the system. And in this game a system of level less progression is fairly unprecedented. The systems you just cited, save for AE, aren't tied to character progression.
They're rolling out a system bit by bit and when we get to the end, if they indicate that they're done, they're not going to talk about the coming storm or rularru or whatever, then you will have had a point. Would I like them to add more content? Absolutely. I would love for them to roll out non-TF incarnate content to earn things like threads that aren't tied to the new multi-team trials (I am not calling them raids. They're not raids. Hamidon and MSR are raids. The closest analog to these in game is the CoP. These are multi-team TF's). But I understand that we're only about halfway through the system as is currently implemented.
Regardless, the issue is right there (emphasis added). Let's randomly say they do Rularru next.
Will the new shiny Rularru raids provide a new option/path to open the already released slots, or will it offer entirely new paths to unlock the next wave of incarnate powers?
I suspect the latter. initial incarnates content will always be limited to the Praetorian war as they "chase the shiny" (TM M_B). that's a big part of my issue/fear/disappointment.
true enough, but I wouldn't call that a core game play mechanic. -
Quote:right. and that's fine. But you're saying "They're jumping around like crazy monkies with these storylines" while people are complaining, at the same time, that they're focusing too much on Praetoria and doing that storyline. Can both be true?
But... unlocking incarnates and all that that brings for the first several slots IS TIED to THIS ONE STORY (that, to be fair, even by wacky comic standards makes no sense). that is the complaint. We expected/wanted/hoped for better. and we are disappointed at being disappointed. That's it.
It isn't the arc. its the arc tied to the mechanic. That is not how CoX has worked. It feels off. And the idea that we don't expect that to change. That's the discussion point, and the offering of ideas of how we think both sides could have been happy - if only - and I think Bill's right on why it didn't happen, and that is probably means 2012 (at best) before a pass is made to do anything about that gap.
Quote:But judging what they're doing now, I would say they're trying to finish up Praetoria, which, by the way, was the main attraction of Going Rogue, so all this new stuff is tacked on to the GR imprint, which means they're trying to provide more content for the brought box. If they jumped on to something else, that would be....annoying. Especially if they didn't finish up the Praetorian content.
What is being said in a nutshell:- advance more than one story constistently
- feel free to use alternate issues to do that rather than fire hose it
- decouple the mechanic
and now that its established that way... I don't see not getting anything but raids for this in the future. I hope I'm wrong. but my confidence is shot given history -
Quote:That is over simplifying too far.But right now they appear to be breaking that mold since we appear to be heading for an epic conflict with Cole, and you want them to not break the mold and go back and refocus on something else?
Also simpler:- It is great they are trying to finish this story now... but they are binding that story into a new core game mechanic. [limiting and shallow]
- Instead of advancing multiple stories along with the new mechanic. [choice and variety and depth]
-
Quote:More good ideas there - probably (okay, very likely) better than my own.Incarnates and the Praetorian invasion should, frankly, have been two separate story 'threads.' We get introduced to the Well via Statesman/Recluse's backstory, and a bit of mention of beings like Stheno. We get introduced to a "lost origin" and Incarnates via Cimerora. Incarnates being introduced as a player system *via* the Midnighters/Cimerora would make sense, and open up multiple ways to build that power - use it against the invasion! Unlock via Midnighter tasks! And who else are the Midnighters responsible for locking away, where Godlike power would be handy? Ruularu! Would it take a bit longer to develop? Of course. But it'd be a better way to handle it than this trainwreck of "Insane Well presents, Emperor Cole and his Dancing Clockwork!"
The point being they address the concerns of those-wanting-content-within-the-game-structure without uncutting the benefit of those that like the structure and aren't as concerned about the content. -
I have been vocal in how it feels off to me, relative to the rest of the game. Raids are fine and all. Great. I love that people love them. I think they are OK. But I do not like them being the sum total of the only way to do the incarnate thing.

And, yes, my wallet is following - my sub will not auto renew for the first time since I started playing. I hope something happens between now and then to let me decide to stay. But I see and hear zero that gives me any hope.

Quote:This is the crux of the matter isn't it?For that matter, what do you WANT the end game to be? More TFs, some story arcs? Exactly like the rest of the game, but with more power?
Personally, I would be disappointed if the end game was nothing more than a couple new TFs and story arcs with nothing to differentiate it from the rest of the game. I mean, if nothing about it changed from the 1-50 content, how are you supposed to know you're playing end game content?
I was thinking about this very thing last night because I have not been able to offer an answer on this.
What is it I would expect? In a dreamscape of Chyll's imagaining (draft 1, mind you):
I would have liked to see something leveraging Origins (a long standing player desire to use those more sits out there, so win/win). Rather than the same Trapdoor arc to unlock, there could have been a series of arcs ideally 1 for each origin (similar feel, but different details), perhaps 1 for vill/hero. So 10 arcs tops. that variety also squelches all the complaints of the repititiveness (win/win/win). Leave a touch of the Well in if needed for linkage, but let it filter through the Origins. Let it feel open if nothing else. A fair amount of work I know... but I was brainstorming.
Then for the rest of the content... I would set up some TFs to kick off the war. Tin, Apex, and the other I20 ones coming seem to line up nicely - so that was done.
Then some normal contacts, 1 vill/1 hero/1 praetorian to let players or teams dig deeper into the war. Let the arcs be incarnate gated, so they can earn incarnate rewards (slower than raids or TFs is fine, it just doesn't have to be as glacial as it seems now), but let the option be there.
(And, yes, a praetorian arc. I have at least one character that would gladly go back to praetorian to keep away any primal invasion, whether he likes Tyrant or not it is still home.)
follow that with letting us know a similar arc structure is pending for the Shadow Shard, for some DE content, all the great bads. Let each issue focus on moving one story forward? Start filling them all rather than single track...
<mini-rant>But let us know. I'm tired of hearing about the coming storm, hints of bastion, unfinished Rikti War, laments of the Shard.... and then we get the Praetorian war bound into incarnates and content pounded out left and right.</mini-rant>
And raids are fine - they are the high points or climax of this war's story line. They should just not drive the entire step into greater power.
<mini-rant>And really, again, we are stronger than ever and we can only do things that require 12-24 of our closest [also stronger] colleagues? It is downright lazy design, IMO.</mini-rant>
perfect ideas? most probably not, but right off the top they seem more flexible, more accessible, and able to better fit a variety of player styles and concerns.
This would also feel more like the CoX I know and love and would have me enthusiastic in keeping my sub online for a long time. -
Quote:And now I know you missed the point.Well, Trials are the main feature of the Incarnate system - so once the Praetorian war is over, the Trials will continue.
It's important to realize that the Incarnate system is separate from Praetoria - some people still seem confused about that - like they think that it's just an extension of GR, and that once the Praetorians are dealt with, that means there'll be no more Trials.
The Incarnate system is designed as an all-purpose endgame system - it's not just something they've spent months developing to only be used on half a dozen Trials set in Praetoria - Leagues, Trials and raids will be the main feature of the Coming Storm, and any other endgame content down the line. -
And I haven't seen a one of us with this issue claiming otherwise. But that does not make the barrier any less true or valid.
trite. probably true. but I think I've lost faith that the future fights will be presented in any better light. -
Quote:orReally, you have about 4 or 5 options in regards to dealing with the Incarnate content.
1) Dive into it and play what is offered as you see fit.
2) Completely ignore it and keep doing the things you've been enjoying so far.
3) Play a little bit of it and continue doing other stuff as well.
4) Take a break or quit altogether because you don't like it.
5) Come to the forums and complain bitterly to anyone who will listen that the devs are wasting their time and ruining the game, because they decided to focus on something you don't personally like.
Judging by the content of recent threads on the subject, it's pretty clear what the most popular reaction has been so far....
6) Come to the forums and attempt to have an open and frank discussion about something that concerns you and try to determine if it is a flawed solo viewpoint, or one that is shared - perhaps even promote moving towards something everyone would appreciate and be able to enjoy. -
I'm in the same boat with the OP, and I've posted a few times now similarly.
I was excited for Incarnate stuff - eager even.
But, now that it is here it feels wrong to me. It doesn't feel like CoX... and sadly is coloring my entire play experience from level 1 on a newbie, to my level 40 striving to win the good fight, and my level shifted incarnates. It is there, like a high pitched tone on a bad phone line. Logic is out the window, no matter how I've tried to get it back. At this point it is a gut response to what has been done so far...
Since it hit, I've played less and less. At this point I haven't even logged in for nearly three weeks.
No, I cannot say what I would do different. I like the structure (well, Lore is kinda silly) of the implementation. But is is linear, it doesn't allow any sort of choice/freedom. The game mechanic, IMO, has been poorly supported by story and narrative structure. And this grates and disappoints terribly.
It has actually gotten worse as I've filled my spare game time with Mass Effect and Dragon Age - shining examples of moving down the same path with choices. -
Quote:Agreed, particularly as the Cimmerians, as I recall, lived in proximity to the norse analogs of the setting, and Conan measured his youth in the number of 'snows' or winters he had survived.Actually, Power_Play's right: Conan is supposed to be a Celtic analogue. As such, he's a massive Germanic or Gallic warrior. Since his description is "far northern" and his name is a traditional Irish name, then "lily white" might be apt.
Quote:It's possible "dark" in this instance doesn't literally mean a "non-white" appearance but rather his countenance.
Also true. -
Quote:Not sure I'd use a description of him bedecked in the regalia of Aquilonia as my go to Conan image...You fail.
The first description of Conan does not describe your lily-white thoughts.
"... a tall man, mightily shouldered and deep of chest, with a massive corded neck and heavily muscled limbs. He was clad in silk and velvet, with the royal lions of Aquilonia worked in gold upon his rich jupon, and the crown of Aquilonia shone on his square-cut black mane; but the great sword at his side seemed more natural to him than the regal accoutrements. His brow was low and broad, his eyes a volcanic blue that smoldered as if with some inner fire. His dark, scarred, almost sinister face was that of a fighting-man, and his velvet garments could not conceal the hard, dangerous lines of his limbs."
And, really, I'm much more interested in whether he can pull off the physicality of the role and Conan's brooding manner rather than if his eyes are blue.
"Arus saw a tall powerfully built youth, naked but for a loin-cloth, and sandals strapped high about his ankles. His skin was burned brown as by the suns of the wastelands and Arus glanced nervously at his broad shoulders, massive chest and heavy arms, A single look at the moody, broad-browed features told the watchman the man was no Nemedian. From under a mop of unruly black hair smoldered a pair of dangerous blue eyes. A long sword hung in a leather scabbard at his girdle."
edit: this isn't necessarily my go to image either, just the first I could lay hands on from the stories that had him loinclothed and warrior-impressive looking. -
Quote:I meant costume loot tied to powers. We've had appearance items as rewards for a long time now. We've had appearance items as ACTUAL LOOT for four years. I'm not sure why you believe we haven't.
I can't think of a single instance where "You can't where nifty shoulder pad 5 unless you have AoE Damage Aura of Cool."
There are instances were they are tied to "completed X", granted. but few and far between given the general awesome of options within the costume creator.
So it is a matter, I suppose of how it is implemented...
edit: and apparently a moot point anyway -
Quote:And CoH to this point has avoided the look=loot=powers. And no reason to start. I really dislike this idea.Well, now that you mention it....
Seriously, it makes no sense for pieces that are supposed to graphically represent the splendor and power of the Incarnate be available to level 10s. Having certain auras and pieces available only to Incarnates would be great IMO and provide an immediate (but optional) way to show that a character has ascended.
glad to hear it -
Yep, I agree completely with your conclusion, Claws. From a design and mechanism standpoint I really like what they have accomplished (drops, powers sequence, crafting structure, etc.).
-
Quote:For the grind complainers... yeah, your point is probably on target.I agree its not a great analogy. But I still say it about priorities. Casual gamer ....blah blah blah.... families and jobs ... blah blah. You can't really expect have the same benefits from playing the game 1-2 hours a week as someone who plays 20+. Thats not rational or at all fair to the person putting in the time.
I have a job and a family too. Who doesn't?
I wouldn't mind the grind if I liked the content.
I do/have done all the other grinds in the game without great qualm. I don't like this one. And I don't want to not like it.... you know that is probably my problem.... I'm truly let down by the game for the first time...
*slinks away to think about that some* -
Quote:That isn't analogous really.I feel like this is saying, "I like money, but I don't like having a job too make the money. Give me a way to get money without having a job!"
I don't have a wife and kids depending on whether I get that next shard.
DanZero said that better than I did... -
Quote:This all boils down to:
Before, you could access everything in the game relatively easily, whether solo or in groups. Even Task Force rewards had an alternate path to obtain. In fact, with all the varied currencies introduced over the last 5 years, there are many many ways to obtain everything in the game except...
Incarnate stuff.
It's taken me a while to see what the gripe is over this, but let me see if I get it now.
People who are upset feel that there is no reasoable way to obtain incarnate stuff, which they want, except by doing incarnate stuff. i.e., you can't buy shards with any other game currency.
Also, you can't even play incarnate trials without said incarnate stuff, thereby denying solo players and casual players from seeing the best of the new content.
So the gist is, this incarnate stuff is sort of a seperate game, which is kinda new because even AE stuff gave regular people rewards options.
Is this the issue?
I think that sums it up nicely for the main opposition.
I think my hang up is that I don't like the incarnate content, but want the incarnate stuff. And again, there is no other way to get the stuff... so yeah, you may have hit it on the head. -
I am going to try one last time, because I do not think I am getting my perspective across, particularly when looking at this comment in response to a statement I made (emphasis added):
Quote:I in know way want to characterize my perception as an objective reality for anyone but myself. It is my subjective reality, that I am sharing as input to the overall discussion. I only ask that it be honored as that. I assume (perhaps erroneously) that it may be shared by others in the community, and is worthy of least an airing to that end accordingly.Lots of things "feel differently" to me simply because I personally care about some things more than others. There's nothing wrong with that. But I don't represent my feeling as an objective reality that everyone should honor by default.
I recognize that things change and alter and morph, especially within an active game like CoH. That is healthy and good for the long term.
I've tried multiple other MMOs and never spent a dime or more than a few hours in the free ones. CoH for whatever reason has over the years hit my sweet spot. It has been fun - costumes, ATs, power, solo, teams, TF, all of it. I have ridden each change - finding and taking my fun out of them and passing over that which doesn't spark my interest without a hiccup.
To me, for me, from my perspective as I play teamed and solo the excitement I had looking forward to Incarnate action has muted considerably.
I am not saying dooooom. I am not complaining about the drops/gating - it makes sense and seems pretty straight forward. It is accessible, mechanically it is nicely structured, almost elegant (though my experience, again, with similar MMO activities is limited).
I like and played certain 50s regularly before incarnates and I was excited to take them on an incarnate path... a few are now level shifted and I've taken a couple through the the coming trials.
I (me, myself) do not like it. The fact is for me that this is taking CoH off of my sweet spot. It is not engagingly fun and is not the same game.
I know everything I like from before is still there, and I do not have to play the new shiny. I get that, too. But I like my 50s and I want them to progress - I've invested in them for years now, and I do not want to stop.
But I do not like the progression in front of me as it has been presented. That's all.
And I do not have to.
But, that does not alter the fact that for me CoH is changing in a way I do not embrace, this time.
Again, I do not say this to be a crybaby, and I do not mean to whine. It is an observation and perspective no less true than that of people that love the new stuff (and I am happy for them).
My feeling is not an objective reality for all. But it is a subjective reality that is no less real for my CoH constituency (even if that is a a constituency of one). I know other CoH constituencies have had similar issues. I sympathized with them then, and I understand their positions better now.
I am not whining and stomping my feet. I am sharing. If there is no place for my perspective, so be it. -
Quote:I get what you are saying, Aracanaville (and over the years your voice and opinion are on the short list of those I listen to implicitly). But for whatever reason, this change does indeed feel different to me (the first since I've been playing - only since I7 I admit). Right or wrong, the perception lays there mocking me.The thing that actually most bothers me is the assertion people are making that the end game system turns this into a fundamentally different game. I've been around since release, and I've seen and participated in pretty much every single "fundamental change" this game has enacted. If there's one thing all of these fundamental changes have in common, its that nothing fundamental changed.
- It is gated, that's fine. But it is gated in a different way. There, so far, hasn't really been an arc or story with meat on it... which feels off.
- The new trials have cool elements, but are just long, complex single missions....
- ...that require teaming. It is an MMO, I know, but before there were missions (solo or teamed) or TF as a range of options. The range on this feels constrained.
It is a feeling, my own, that this isn't my CoH. *shrug* I'm clearly not alone, and I have a feeling that I may be in the minority. In no way do I think it is *doom* or going to hurt the game in general.
But it may have fundamentally hurt it for me. I probably just need a break. -
General may have been too general a word.
It seems as if I've seen fewer instances of people saying "that's silly" instead of "you're silly".
Maybe my memory is rose-colored about pretty faithful self policing and not really feeling what Maestro mentions until recently:
Quote:A fair chunk of the longtime posters are still shell shocked over the switch last fall, with rule enforcement still being confusing.
Basically, this went from being a very friendly and casual atmosphere for most of us to one where we had to constantly wonder if we're breaking the rules. In turn this led to an exodus of helpful posters and left us with the more... vocal among us.
I've watched closely over the past 6 months and marveled at how forum cartel members, posters with a multi year long record of being friendly and understanding have slowly mutated into forum pvpers and I blame the sour grapes feeling that still lingers. -
Quote:You may be right. And maybe I missed this phase the last time.I'm honestly not sure how much it has changed.
When I first got here there was always people bickering back and forth, making little snide comments about other players.
Then it seemed to go away for a couple of years.
Maybe what you are seeing is simple a natural cycle of the forum.
I still find people very helpful here.
Or maybe I'm just reading the wrong threads. -
-
...or is the general tone around the forums changing?
-
Energy damage, right? with end drain in some hits?
my elec/ armor had success, but the defense wasn't super high, so I used purple inspirations, so that misses the mark. Not a particularly high end build tho... (did the hover route)
Can't remember if I ever tanked him dark/. I imagine that would do well, depending on slotting.
hmm...
It's the no healer bit that has me scratching my head. -
Quote:I was responding in this thread, about this discussion. Of which I have been vocal, so felt your comment targeted my way.Off base?
There were a lot of people telling other people to quit complaining about the game not giving them what they want.
Now a lot of those same people are the ones doing the complaining, and they are getting bent out of shape because the people they were telling to suck it up for 6 years are saying the same thing to them now.
Basically, those people are being treated the same way they were treating other people for the last 6 years. It all boils down to people thinking they can say something to someone, but when the positions are reversed you better not DARE say it to them.
So, yeah, that's where the "How's it feel?" came from. People getting outraged over being told the same thing they were saying for years.
But apparently I am angry and cynical today, so maybe I'll just slink away.
