Quote:Yeah, I wrote up most of my off-the-cuff response before I read the article. If you read the fiction so far, the Marines are being given a helicopter squadron, but with only enough fuel for about a month of operations.
Quote:It's a nicely done fic. I think the author is making it too much of an even match by having the Marines dither about for a while before launching an assault. If the Marines go into Rome with shock and awe tactics, they'll win. The longer they sit on their *****, the less fuel and food they'll have and the larger the legion recruitment will be. I have no doubt that the Romans will win a long game. -
I love the Roman Legions as much as the next history geek, but...
Quote:Inexhaustible?Unless they had like a million bullets, no.
Even with infinite ammo they'd be hard-pressed. The Romans were one of the deadliest warfare machines in history, unstoppable in every direction in the map. Their numbers were virtually inexhaustible,
Hardly. At it's largest the trained cadre of the legions had a firmly known quantity. Let's pick, say, early empire.... what 30 legions-ish as the standing force - at least I remember Augustus' reforms putting it at 28. About 5,000 men in a legion, if memory serves? 140,000 men? Inexhaustible, huh?
(edit: ok, a quick search put it at about 50 legions when Augustus took power after the civil wars - assuming they were all at full strength, 250,000. still hardly inexhaustible.)
(further edit: not sure where that article gets its numbers of 11,000 in a legion... must be counting the tail and auxiliaries in the up front count. Still, not much of an exercise.)
Add in the auxiliaries and the numbers would go up.... How much? I don't know, but let's be generous and say 280,000 auxiliaries.
OK, the MEU.
Let's just talk infantry men,... a fast internet search tells me count on about 200 rounds per foot slogger on a normal load. (I think I'd give them a heavy combat load..., but let's not cheat.)
26th MEU has about 2,200 men
That's 440,00 rounds. Single shot at range... more than enough to take out most, if not all, the legions, and their auxiliaries depending on which numbers you use. (edit: yes, max range. If I'm assaulting, I walk up to no more than max and run some target range drills into the massed romans... if defending, nice high ground over open field......)
Not convinced? How about we add in the weapons squads in each platoon - SAWs with 4-6,000 rounds each? Couple of those... a 60mm mortar section....
Not convinced? An MEU likely would have an aviation unit... air power will win you battles against modern forces, let alone a Roman force.
Quote:If a single marine fell, that would mean a roman packing a firearm, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a legionarie wielding it better than any marine alive.
Romans were melee fighters... with some range in archers, javelins, etc.... the range of the modern firearm? Romans would never get near enough to take that gun. (edit:
Not even considering that the marine chest plate designed to stop modern firearms is going to turn aside a gladius, even if the Romans got close enough.) -

So there I was, an office building was besieged by a horde of evil robots that were tearing up the carpeting and knocking over potted plants. I entered, and spotted several straight away. Having seen them, I opened fire - ice blasts ripping their fragile metal shells to pieces as they tried to run at me. Well, some in the back had energy beams, and there seemed to be one or more buffing the others. I took some damage, and quickly. Maybe (maybe) I could have scouted them better first, but, I'm a blaster - shoot first and ask questions later.
Besides, Hibernate, is your friend so.... hey, I died.
That's when I learned never to click hibernate twice - even if it seems like maybe it didn't activate at first - because that second time will immediately turn it off. And that third click does you no good. -
Hair bad.
Suit bad.
But, I'm a bad test, because superman? meh -

Quote:Thanks for the reply, and I wasn't trying to disrupt - just making a marginally tongue-cheek observation (also missed that it had been discussed when I scanned the thread - sorry).Again, Chyll no matter what the theme could have been at the time of voting all choices faced the argument of waiting till i21 hits. My suggestion would to possible make a corr with dark blast. I know its not a perfect solution, but the best i can offer. Depending when i21 hits, you are more then welcome to roll a dark blaster and join us then. The only factors we would have to be wariy of would be the level gap. Since new toons will be able to choose there starting side right away, a new balster could easily join the side the group chooses. For the record, we always try to find a happy medium with levels gaps so if the blaster is what you really want, then maybe roll a temp toon to start off with us and switch to the blaster once we figure out what side we are playing on.
Having played all the existing dark sets/ATs, blaster would be 'new'... but I tend to prefer corrs anyway. With existing power sets I'd probably lean dark/pain (that pesky I21 again stops me from saying dark/time.)
A DA/ tank would be fun to level again too, I suppose...
Quote:Possible soltions: a) try to catch episodes online (i briefly looked up walking dead. you are refering to the AMC show, correct?)
Quote:b) try to record the show in some way. (granted i know the feeling of wanting to watch a new episode the night that it premeres. so the argument is moot, but a positive side is you could fast forward through the commericals.)
Quote:c) i know i tend to get on early before the play sessions and usually stand around looking up stuff on WW. So in theory, a team could be formed a bit early to get in extra time before your departure. The only hitch would be TF/SF should one be done that evening. Not a big deal since there have been occasions we did a TF/Sf back-to-back (i.e. one on friday and the same one on sunday).
d) try to find a partner to level pact with. If you can for sure make the firday night runs, then i don't see why missing an hour on sunday would be a problem. I think there are a couple of justice super teamers in the group who would be happy to join a level pact with you. I can't recall who may/may not already be in one. But i don't think it will be to hard to find one.
Luckily I have time to figure it out. -
Shame that this couldn't wait for dark blasters...
That said, I started figuring what I'd bring to the party and realized that at least 1/2 the planned times are going to run right into 'The Walking Dead' once broadcasts start. -
Not knowing what your concept idea is... can it wait for Demon/Time?

Quote:Right, I get that. I understand.QFT. Incarnate content was always designed to be End Game Content, ie: raid-centric. It's what many players had been asking for, for years.
Alternate solo paths for Incarnate content is... well, alternate. An addition. Not part of the original design.
But, the entire idea that an incarnate becomes stronger than they've ever been and that means... there is nothing new of note to tackle with that solo power... just boggles my mind. An incarnate easily equivalent to a team of 8 (at a minimum) can only utilize that power when teamed with 16-24 equally powerful incarnates?
I just cannot fathom why some sort of alternate/solo/small team path wasn't envisioned from the start. It is a logic fail. (And no amount of winkies overcomes it.) A slower pace of rewards is fine and acceptable - we get merits slower for solo arcs than for TF now. I just do not understand the design decision, at all. And I never will.
(That said, I am happy to see something starting to appear with the sig arcs.)
edit: in terms of full disclosure, I enjoy the trials (even Keyes), and I like the story line (mostly - though I'd like to raid the evil resistance too).

Quote:I'd quibble, that what you have listed really is the exploration of mankind...See this is where you mess up your understanding...
Star Trek is not an exploration of "mankind" but rather the philosophies, the thoughts, the emotions, the wonder, our troubles, and even taking a mirrored reflection to see how horrible or brilliant we are or could be if we were to follow this or that path.
Vulcans display a culture completely consumed by Rationalism...which isn't rational at all.
Klingons display a culture of war that leads to strife and internal problems and eventual destruction.
Romulans display a culture of xenophobia that leads to stagnation, paranoia, and destruction
Ferengi display a culture of corporate excess that leads to a culture that really can't make up its mind.
The Federation is not "humanity" it's an ideal to follow, the freedom, curiosity, balance of the other aspects displayed in the other groups.
TOS dealt with dealing with the unknown horizons with these ideals (less sophisticated version but still)
TNG dealt with maintaining those ideals
DS9 dealt with the problems of ideals in war
Voy dealt with those ideals in isolation
Ent dealt with the formation of those ideals
I don't see why ST couldn't deal with those ideals when challenged with near omnipotence or the ability to right past events.
I also don't see why an alien race couldn't be captain to get that perspective
Nor do I see why one couldn't view past alien cultures through the eyes of the federation ideals. Especially one where the culture was more advanced and so how do you deal with a culture that doesn't act like yours when you think you're right...especially a culture that lead to your own.
But, I belive that an alien as captain would be a fine furtherance of exploring humanity - for both that character and for us as viewers. -
Quote:Yep, I get what you did.Well they're pretty much separated into
Pre 20th century named swords for the West and East.
Swords that came into popularity pre-digital and globalization era.
Swords that came into their own after the digital and global age.
The hardest one for me is the Novels + D&D + Western Fictional Sword... Since I never read much western fantasy or got involved with D&D... I'm pretty sure i could just type in D&D swords or something. Anime just type in Bleack zanpaktou. the other two just type in legendary swords/weapons. It's pretty easy to find these weapons... and like i said if you can't think of a sword that'd go in the category you can just skip it.
It is all on me. I never would have even messed with categories, and I don't think I would have linked the latter ones quite the way you did (novels and D&D together?). Something in my brain just locks when I try to figure where my suggestions would fit.
I won't pretend that I'm speaking for anyone else, but I would have just said - "suggest two swords". -
I had a similar experience with trials on Sunday myself. I'll skip the long story but a disfunctional recruit/startup of a BAF somehow devolved to my having the star and launching with only 14. Nightstar easy, no prisoners, and then Siege was iffy to start and the adds ate our lunch. But we rallied, took a deep breath and fought our way through.
Nice... and then they wanted a Lambda. So I stayed as leader. Some leave, some stay, we pick up one via LFG to get to 16. Someone drops part way through. I assign teams for acids/nades, and end up with about 3-4 going for acid and the rest went nades. Couldn't figure out why no one listened, but *shrug*. It was hectic, but nades went fast, they ran over and we got all the acid. I try to get either of our tanks to speak up and take nades and got crickets... so defender volunteered (drawing a blank on who it was, but someone I know via JFA/JU... need more coffee). And we won.
But point being, two crazy Justice trials that were fun, but... yeah. -
Quote:*shrug* not logical to my mind.i don't see why... The categories are just there to include more swords.
Not a criticism, just not a structure I would ever have considered, and immediately trying to put swords into those buckets left me with... no suggestions.
Probably just a mental block. -
I'd be in... but the categorization just... bamboozles my interest.
