Obviously, the recent success of The Avengers has WB looking hard at their own superhero properties but I believe it must approach the situation from a new perspective. Simply following Marvel's formula may indeed lead to success but greater glory and revenue can be achieved if the focus is placed on WB's greatest comic book assets, the DC villains.
Today, thanks to cartoons and movies, the world probably knows Spider-Man, Iron Man and Hulk just as well as they know Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. However, I'd be willing to wager that more people know Lex Luthor, the Joker and Hades than say Green Goblin, The Mandarin and The Leader. It's a toss up between each companies' heroes but Warner Bros. has the distinct advantage when it comes to antagonists, especially since the rights to major Marvel baddies such as Dr. Doom, Apocalypse and The Kingpin are held by other studios. Heck, Batman alone has untapped rogues that could provide fertile fodder for 10 more Dark Knight films. Sure, we've seen Lex Luthor in plenty (almost every) Superman film to date but let's be honest, we've yet to see the Lex Luthor from the comic books (the closest we've come is Smallville) and even still, the likes of Parasite, Darkseid, Braniac, etc. are all ripe for a big screen debut. The Flash has his own unique cabal of adversarial foes and Wonder Woman has the Greek pantheon to battle. The mistake Green Lantern made was going with an immaterial Parallax instead of the cold and calculating Sinestro, a mistake I'm sure will be rectified in the reboot/sequel. In many ways, the villains of DC have the same relatablity as the heroes of Marvel. Often these individuals are flawed human beings who use their abilities for personal gain instead of the greater good. You take Lex Luthor and make him a force for good and you have Tony Stark, give Solomon Grundy a personality and you have the Hulk, Talia Al Ghul a slightly different career path and she's Black Widow and so on and so forth. My point is that there's an opportunity here for originality, a chance to be daring and focus on the villain's story and show a different side of the comic book world to the movie going populace. And what happens when the villains lose the climatic battle against their superhero counterparts? Why, they assemble of course.
In today's society, and magnified a hundredfold in the geek community, the ability to successfully implement an original idea in our "been there, seen that" era is invaluable and is the chief reason why Marvel's currently riding high. The other side of that coin dictates that Warner Bros. will never achieve the same level of success if they simply copy what we've just experienced in The Avengers. We've seen the alien invasion, we've seen the long, meticulous recruitment of heroes, we've seen atypical humor immersed in realism. An end-scene where Amanda Waller shows up to talk to Superman about the Justice League initiative is not going to have the same impact. Take the The Avengers formula and build upon it. Regardless of whether you're purely a fan of Marvel or DC, the fact is ticket sales for The Avengers were roughly the same as those for The Dark Knight. Add 3D revenue for the Dark Night and it theoretically has the better box-office numbers. Now imagine what a Dark and Mature film' taking cues from Christopher Nolan's movie formula and featuring Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman could earn. Applying Marvel's formula, a Justice League movie can still be original by following the DC antithesis of S.H.I.E.L.D., (maybe H.I.V.E.) in their recruitment of defeated villains to form The Injustice League. Instead of assembling superheroes to defend the Earth from threats that a secret government organization can't handle, a secret terrorist organization assembles a group of super-villains to combat an indestructible force for good, Superman. Apply the Marvel formula but play to the strength of the DC universe. When Superman is unable to single-handedly oppose this organized, calculated and ruthless threat to “Truth, justice and the American way,” he seeks out allies, namely heroes who have dealt with these villains before. You'd be hard pressed to find someone that isn't interested in seeing Lex Luthor, Black Adam and Deathstroke combining their talents to take down the Man of Steel. This method would also attract some big name acting talent who probably have no desire to play a superhero but would jump at the chance to play a menacing, merciless anti-hero (see Hugo Weaving in the Captain America movie).
Hopefully someone at DC is in the ear of every writer currently working on bringing a DC hero to life. The key ingredient to Marvel's success is that all of the top execs, directors and writers have been fans of the genre and have striven to stay as close as possible to the spirit of the source material. Foregoing a focus on the villians, if WB takes only one lesson from Marvel Studios then hopefully it's the realization that this their subsidiary has endured for decades because even though society has changed, their characters have stayed true to who and what they are, the Man of Tomorrow, a Dark Knight and an Amazon Princess. Perfect the formula Warner!
In short don't focus on the heroes...the catalyst and the source lies here..
Villians
How does this sound? What idea's do you have to make this happen? -

Quote:I would believe that if they you know.... they hired a chinese actor to play Mandarin.. but the actor isn't even asian in any way. Wasn't this a reason why people complained about The Last Airbender before any trailer hit? Where are those people now?I don't think this is really comparable. I expect Mandarin will be used like Blofield in the early Bond films, just giving out orders to minions from behind the scenes.
In this case, I would guess that Iron Patriot (as a henchman of Mandarin) might be used to attack Chinese* targets, in an attempt to both provoke conflict between the US and China and the US and Tony Stark.
*Iron Man 3 is a Chinese co-production and is known to use Chinese locations.
In any event the guy is a good actor and I hope he does the role justice
for those that didn't read the article
Quote:Here's what we can CONFIRM as true (and not from some guy working security on an off-lot shoot): The Mandarin (as played by Ben Kingsley) is a villain in the 'Iron Man 3,' but he's more a veiled threat as a silent partner to Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian. Killian is the man inventing Extremis and putting it into his "Extremis army" of multiple super-powered individuals. -
Quote:So MIB3 will be known as the movie that broke the Avengers #1 box office streak!

Most first time readers are fascinated by great artwork first and story second.. (this is just the natural progression, until you are accustomed) Most times I have been able to get people into reading comics with the following book. (Its almost fool proof due to the Art first, Story second mentality that got most of us into comics in the first place)
I would recommend "Kingdom Come" as it has great visual artwork by Alex Ross and a good story by Mark Waid. It has a movie like plot and will suck you in pretty easily with characters you recognize and can get to grow from.
Basic premise of the story
It is set in the year 2020 where Superman and his generation of heroes from the Justice League days have been succeeded by a new generation of heroes whose ideals are more nihilistic, caring less about the people they're supposed to protect and more about their own egos, and are found even clashing with each other as much as they do with the villains. It is when a major disaster happens when Superman decides to rein in the new generation of heroes in the hopes that they would reform and adopt his generation's ideals of what being a superhero is about.
Its a very good read for a first time reader as the pages of the story bounce off the page and are almost life like it will definatly keep your interest. The story is pretty easy to follow along as well.
Here is another pic of the comic.
Here is some pages from the book

Quote:Thank you! Now I can go back and keep this visual in my head over and over till next Sunday!Chrome, since you are in the book spoilers thread I'll assume you don't mind spoilage. Never fear, Tyrion is fine (scarred, but fine). Much much more of his story to go. Besides he's George's favorite character and the one most like himself. Tyrion ain't goin' anywhere anytime soon.

Please tell me that the Tyrion Lanister didn't die at the end
I just finished watching the episode and was hoping that this wasn't the case he's one of my favorite characters. I didn't see him in next weeks preview either..
On that note I really hate King Joffrey he's pompus and scared! -

MIB 3 was a good movie, the ending was touching and tied a lot together.
Movie was a 100 times better than part 2, I felt that the ticket price was justified. Pretty good flick. -
Just an hour ago, DC Animation revealed who will voice Batman, Robin and Two-Face in their upcoming adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (click here for details). Now, the hollywood reporter has debuted a batch of new still photos from the two-part adaptation, which will be directed by Jay Oliva. These images include Batman (Peter Weller) and Robin (Ariel Winter), among others, and give us a first look at the animated style of the movie (as well as how closely it resembles the art in the novel). Check them out below:
The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 will be available on DVD/Blu-Ray/Digital Download later this year, while Part 2 will be released early next year.

Nerf Buff Nerf Buff Nerf Buff Nerf Buff..
I swear if I was a developer on this game I would be going crazy trying to make folks happy. Lets take a trip down memory lane..
Brutes had end issues prior to IOs .. and to some degree do.
So people cried and devs got redside toons the ablilty to have patron and hero epics and one of the epics can buff recovery! *AWESOME!!*
Brutes were still crying that Electric Armor and Energy Aura were weak.. and needed a heal instead of conserve power... they also cried for wanting more regen.. and more +def to be like Ice armor..
This was like this for YEARS
Until... Tanks/Scrappers got access to Electric and Energy shields. The hero kiddies started complaining about wanting a heal!! and +Def for energy aura if its meant to be like Ice for tanks!
So because of tanks we finally got a heal in the power set!! YAY!!! it made the power set even stronger!!!!! So thanks to TANKS it made this possible.
Fast forward... Brutes were never has resiliant as tanks (still aren't really the numbers are a lot lower) now we want nerfs to Brutes because Tanks are no longer getting love? Brutes had a nerf to Fury while Tanks got a buff to HP...
So if Tanks get BUFFED shouldn't these sets be nerfed then? I mean see the trend here? Buff buff buff NERF... so if Tanks do more damage than was originally intended then why do we need Firey Aura have faster recharge to healing flames? (which was another buff a few issues back) why do we need the heals to Energy Aura or Electric Armor?
Back when Brutes were suffering they never got this type of love by getting heals into power sets.. but now we have them thanks to Tanks. If we change tanks to semi- brutes.. then why do we keep these other buffs that were given on the pure principal of how tanks are made and work?
We can't have this both ways.. remember how we got these buffs in the first place. Becareful what you wish for... buff buff buff then HARD nerf.. seems to be the trend here..
I still say making taunt an inheret power at lvl 1 instead of a selected power would give me another power choice and add to my DPS which would make me happy (and others as well)..and more importantly.. this won't nerf ANYTHING as it makes sense to do so based on what the AT's key role is. Aggro management. -
Quote:Just curious, is that 545% what your Shield and/or SS can accomplish on their own?
I'm not against a Damage Cap increase for Tankers, but I'd rather see changes that effected Tankers as a whole not changes that helped a couple powerset combos.Quote:And if Brute damage is still to high (though I believe most of the time it's just higher than Scrapper dues to Gloom), lower their cap a bit.
Besides didn't Brutes already had there damage cap lowered a few issues back and the same time Tankers HP was raised? -
Personally I don't think Tanks are broken,.. However, since this has turned into a wish list thread.. I'll provide my wish..
I want taunt as a power pick for Tanks to happen automatically at lvl 1. If we are ment to be aggro magnets then this should come in as an inhereted power (outside of gauntlet) like fly comes to PB's and TP comes to WS's.
This way we can get one power selection more than brutes can get. I do not think that Brutes and Scrappers should get this option since their primary focus isn't to hold aggro likes tanks are ment to.
*Just a suggestion to throw out there* this way you're not nerfing brutes, but giving something to Tanks to add more DPS. -

Quote:lulz. he sounded annoyed. Maybe he is envious of the success of the Avengers and not to be involved due his greed and arrogance lol. I mean who HASN'T seen the Avengers yet??? well now we have the answer..Edward Norton On Marvel's THE AVENGERS: "It Just Isn't Very Important To Me"
During an interview with Hitfix, the man who was all set to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers before things went awry is asked if he has seen the movie yet. Check out his response..
Mark is like a brother to me," he said, praising "Avengers" star Mark Ruffalo's commitment to his work overall. "Besides, he's got two kids, and I'm really happy he gets to have this moment with them," he continued. When I asked him if he'd actually seen the film yet, that's when he admitted that he had not, and that it hadn't been a priority.

Quote:fixed that for ya..I saw The Avengers this past saturday. It's 1 of a small handful of movies that actually lived up to the hype. One of the best if not 'the' best "Superhero" movie of all time.
Saying best movie of all time is hog wash.. it was a great fun movie that lived up to the hype.. but there have been MANY great movies in the last 75 years to say this is better than Godfather, Titanic, Scarface, or any number of movies is pushing it.
