If we can't just put pencil to paper then I probably shouldn't post this n stuffz...

Quote:Midnight in practical terms is short for Middle of the night.Midnight Friday January 22... The thing I hate about using midnight as a deadline is that technically it is vague... Are we reffering to the midnight that ends the day of Thursday the 21st and begins the day of Friday the 22nd? Or are we meaning the midnight that signals the end of Friday the 22nd and the beginning of Saturday the 23rd??
If instead of "Midnight Friday" you read it as... the deadline is the "Middle of the Night Friday" then it should be clear.
The one prior to that would be the middle of Thursday's night leading up to Friday's morning
An official post by the FArt mistress would be nice, but that is how I read it. -
A little birdy told me there was a special treat coming this week...
**waits patiently**

Ref or a link to them in this thread is good. Thanks Foo I'll take a look after my FArt entry is done.
Quarrios just PM'd some to me cuz I asked for better shots with a closeup on the faces to see if there was something that would work for me.

Quote:^ This. ^I think competition, debates, and critiques are healthy, leading to new ideas and ultimately more impressive art. It's a ultimately a win/win for artists and collectors, bruised egos aside. I feel there could be a better balance of all those things along with praise, but from what I've seen over the past few years, folks have been avoiding everything aside from praise out of fear of starting a flame war...
If no one steps up and points stuff out this forum will soon devolve into a bunch of people saying some variant of the word "Nice" over and over and over to every piece of art posted ad nauseum out of fear of offending. Then people might start posting less art and the forum could slowly die off out of sheer boredom.
I have in the past (and will continue to in the future) spoken my mind about the art I see and as long as I keep it positive and constructive, let people know when I'm just joking with them (through the use ofand mispellin' dah wordz like on purplose n' stuffz) and say what they are doing right... not just what they have done wrong then it's all good.
I also tell people PM me if they don't want my feedback, so far no takers.
I honestly wish more people (more than the handful that do already) would do the same... the artists would get the feedback they need to improve, rather then a bunch of insincere and inane (lol) praise, and people would feel they are contributing and the community can thrive and flourish.
Quote:The idea of a competitive fanart gallery centered around an original game character is nonsense. It doesn't matter who is drawing the character, because ultimately the whole appeal of the endeavor is going to rest on the design of that character.
I don't like Superman. I think he's dull in terms of character design. Lining up a superstar list of comics pros to draw him isn't going to change the matter. I'd rather they worked on something more interesting.
Ultimately the "debate" boils down to vanilla vs. chocolate vs. strawberry vs. whatever
Also I disagree that the base design of the character is all important... I have seen really cool and well executed pieces of otherwise lame characters that made me take a 2nd look at the them as a whole to see if I missed something, likewise I have seen characters I thought were really interesting and great drawn terribly so much so that if that depiction was the only piece I ever saw of that character I would think him/her to be unworthy of my time. I think we all have seen this.
P.S. I'll take two scoops of the "whatever" flavor... unless the vanilla you'z haz is French Vanilla. I dun know what makez it bettah but yeah it totally is.
Yah just don't use the rectal thermometer...
he hatez that and stuffz...
so I've heard. -
Quote:Heh, indeed it does JkWelcome back TA. Hope things get better for ya.
As for the typos or grammatical errors CR points out, I wouldn't worry about it too much...
...see, it happens to the best of us.
Again, welcome back TA!(see kids no good comes of posting when you are tired)... that said, I would care a bit more about a fully written back story of one of the most famous and recognizable faces of the forum though than some post in a thread somewhere by some dude who types in orange. Come on... who reads that guy's stuff anywayz?

Quote:Applauds Juggertha.Ok guys... this seems to be getting all too familiar.
In 2008 I started up the FArt contest as a way to focus, challenge, and inspire some of the artists on this board. It was never to be taken too seriously (look at the title for god's sake), and it is strictly for enjoyment purposes.
The first year went off relatively smoothly. Some people objected to the contest, and they simply didn't join. The second year, well, joined or not, many people decided to voice their strong objections to nearly everything - the main focus seemingly on the adherence to the rules.
So this year, Wassy is running the show and has decided to be a bit firmer with the rules. They dont sound outrageous to me, and they were posted well in advance.
So, if the rules are unclear, ask for clarification (as FD did) - but if you don't like the rules of the contest... WHY COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM WHEN IT'S UNDERWAY??? Why not say something beforehand?
And seriously folks, chill out a bit. This is for fun. If you're not having fun, shake it off and don't bother with this thing.
It's not worth it.I agree with everything you said except the end. This event is totally worth it to me drama or no drama and I find myself looking forward to it each month while it's happening.
Over the course of exchanging ideas arguments and debates will happen but as long as they are civil I am ok with them.
That said this thread should be about the Art and having fun so if it starts getting out of hand I will happily start a different thread for discussion. This has many benefits but most importantly
1. People who genuinely want to debate the finer points don't feel they are being shushed or stifled.
2. Keeps the drama out of this thread. For people who could care less about the "drama" and just want moar artz nao... they can ignore that thread entirely and just come to this thread to keep up with the event.
3. If that wholly separate debate thread gets out of hand, crazy, personal or goes over the line (some people aren't really interested in a rational debate they want a fight and lots of controversy) and should get modsmacked/silenced it does NOT risk harming the contest in any way shape or form.
Even better yet send a PM and keep it off the boards all together... Wassy from everything I'm reading is flexible (man I hope so... in her role as Fan Art Mistress that is... ahem) and willing to hear complaints and or logical reasoned arguments... or like send them to me and stuff... no really, if you want to debate in PM's I'm like all here for ya and stuffz... ummm please... I'll let you go first... I'll even use white text in PM's I promise
... pwiddy puweassse?
No?
Darn it, they never want a real one on one debate!
"I am not Crazy! My mother had me tested" - Dr. Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)
Heh, love that show.
Quote:double plus plus. What he said.
Only way this competition works is if all parties involved understand that it's supposed to be just for fun. And the rules are there to challenge the people participating to do things which they might not normally do, thereby improving their skillz. Life's too short to be pissed about how a friendly forum competition with no prize whatsoever is being run.
If one doesn't like how this particular competition is being handled (and did not voice their discontent when such discontent was being requested for over a month), they're free to give it a pass. Or start their own competition with rules more to their liking.

err... umm... also I think for this contest now, that we need at LEAST a one breast minimum on all drawings

Briefly because I need to get some sleep.
@ Shia: In a word, No.
If I were to change my text font or color to something else it would not be through coercion or your "making a stand." Click n' drag over my text and presto it's now blue on white... Super easy to read and it takes less than one second and almost no effort to do.
If that is too much "work" for you to do then just ignore me.
If you are looking for an easy way to cop out you have several avenues open to you and it's kinda strange that you would seek to pin it on me?
@deebs: F.Y.I. For those not aware the forums gives you approximately 1 minute to make any changes to a post you want without being considered an edit. Seriously as many as you want as long as you are less than 60 secs it counts as your original post... how do I know that? Simple I do it all the time.... I edit all my posts.
Every single one of them.
Take a look through my thread (button is in the sig) or anywhere I post often and see for yourself. If there is a post that does not say edited it's more than likely because I was fast enough to beat the 60 second clock. You think I am editing just on account of you???
Nope think again.
Also you have edited posts too, what's your point?
If you honestly want to have a debate about the rules, something you think I said wrong or my "maddening orange text" I'm willing to do so in PM's or through voice chat, but if you just want controversy for it's own sake or to ruin the contest thread for others I wish you well but you are on your own.
P.S. -
B..b..bb...b but my butt has to be stationary to draw if I move it I'll never get anything done.

Quote:Actually im complaining about the inane rule to begin with the so called "Hawt Chick " ruleQuote:And you are free to ignore me , irregardless if your going to host a public contest on a public forum and then add in a inane "must have hawt chicks " rule solely because the host wants Hawt chicks im alowed to voice my displeasure publicly espescially when the person hosting it says inane things like "Its a male swim meet and going by olympic rules theres no way the foot could belong to a woman "
Inane means lacking sense or significance... to be devoid of meaning.
Wassy's claim that it would not (in her opinion) be a females foot in the pool by Olympic rules
makes pretty good sense. Did they let hot chicks jump in the pool before, during or after one of Michael Phelps Olympic runs?
Would anyone not there to compete jump into a bloody pool with a shark in it? Makes sense to me.
The fact that it is supposed to be an Olympic event is important since there are no men vs women co-ed swims in the Olympics... that means it's significant too.
Sounds to me like what Wassy said is the opposite of inane despite your repeated misuse of the word...
that's pretty "Ironic."
P.S. you are free to ignore me if you so choose as well.
-
I like you deebs but in this case I really am glad you don't speak for Shia... I really am.
You are like totally ruining my plans for a ultimate finale deathmatch to the death n' stuffz.
There were some problems last year true but we also got to see some truly inspired art as well
and that's something I wouldn't choose to give up just to spare us some board drama. Not a chance.
As far as not liking the rules of this particular contest, having a hot chick as a prerequisite (if this is what you are referring to)
may not be something that "does it" for you but it's about as benign a rule as you could ask for... it just means you gotta add one more person
(heck even a small part of them) to the scene. I know not everybody is willing to speak out if they are bothered by something but I personally have no
problem saying what I think in this regard and to me it's no different than being restricted to a theme each month... it may put some limitations on what we
can do but it also levels the playing field and forces people to be creative. I'm ok with that.
You set the rules up front and you stick to them... that, I feel, is the only way to be fair and do it right this time around and I for one applaud Wassy for sticking to her guns on this.
P.S. Shia whatever you decide I'm cool with it. I will still look forward to seeing your art and sense of humor, but I hope if you exit the contest this year it's because you went out fighting and not because you got flunked on a technicality in the very first month. It's only a small addition you need to make to have a viable submission and you have several days to do it in... think about it and I'll see you on the field of battle! Cheers.

Hey there ya are man! Was starting to wonder what happened to ya... if the FArt contest starting up and gift arts with TA in it can't lure you out something must be up.
Lol not by anything I've said yet... *rescans his posts* nah just pointed out a small flaw in the pic and that you and Bayani have different way of building your gallery in that you support any attempt to draw TA and Bayani is more of an elitist art snob...ok I'm paraphrasing here buy you get the idea.
However I did follow Bayani's link to the history of TA and while I really enjoyed reading your backstory... ya might want to run it past someone who can proof read.
Little things like misplaced commas or errant use of part participle I don't bother to point out but some of the misspellings are... unfortunate.
I'm pretty sure Thor's Assassin is supposed to "take such things" and not "suck things"
Go to your page hit " ctrl+f " type the word suck and hit enter and you'll find it.
Also search for "hse"... their were others but I forget atm.
Don't worry most of the mistakes are small trivial stuff and many people wouldn't even notice them... but it's clearly OCR.
Oh and welcome back.

It's the latest in a long line of crackpot theories on how the world will end.
A combination of a 5 thousand year old prophecy (of a sorts) the I-Ching combined with the last day on the Mayan calender combined with a computer program that "read" the collective "wisdom" of the internet (our technological zeitgeist if you will... I typed that with a straight face... just sayin) and they all spit out the same date and so the EoW'ers are all in a lather once again. They get something to get all fired up about again (they need it too when y2k came and went and no planes fell out of the sky and the markets didn't implode and no meteor struck the earth) and we get a crappy movie with great special effects.
Dangit now even the art collectors are PCR' ing me... *shakes fist* curses foiled again!
-
If the whole tattoo on a mangled swimmer doesn't do it for ya Shia there's another alternative. You don't need a full length hot chick do you? (does he?) He could just have a head and shoulder and boobs of a hot chick below the podium gazing up at Mako in the classic "my hero" routine. Maybe with one arm wrapped around his leg ala European Vacation. That would be a quick fix as well.
Figures she would enjoy that too much... I shall simply have to try harder next time. -
Quote:Next three? Is there some previous trio of "personality traits as a name" that I don't know about?Okay..those sound like names for the next three characters...who's with me??!
Are you talking about making them up for the hero group and roleplaying them?
I'll take Pompous.
It may not count as a style... it's just a really cool thing to have. *high-fives Wassy*
Great likeness of Missy. Nice line work. Shading values read well.
The only things I might point to are:
The lapel on the left... the upper triangle of it appears to be floating because of the wide soft shadow to the left of/under it. The hard line of the collar coming from around her neck would suggest almost a right angle and so the top part of the lapel should be sitting right on top of the jacket I believe and so the shadow should be thinner and darker to show that the two are very close. The lower part of the lapel where her body curves down and away from it reads great just as it is.
The shadow at the skirt's hemline needs to be a bit darker on the far right where the material is touching the skin. It may actually be that way now and it just loses some of that during the scanning, hard to tell.
One boot appears pointed and almost touching the ground at the tip the other is snub nosed and the tip appears raised.
The shadow of the sword... if I scroll down so I'm only looking at her feet and her shadows the swords shadow reads like the sword is sticking out about 30 degrees but scrolling up to view the sword it looks to be nearly vertical.
That's all I would care to point out that (in my opinion) could possibly be improved upon.
Beautiful piece.
-
Didn't say it... refrained from saying it... bit my tongue and let someone else spot it too...
...but yeah had it gone much further I would've mentioned the lack of hawt chick in Shia's piece. I'd hate for him to lose out before we even get started...
...now losing to me in the finals sure, that would work and stuffz(like I'm going to make it to the finals haha)... but not in the first month when there isn't even an elimination.
As the man called Jayne would say... "Let's not be excludin' people, that'd be rude"
That's a cool graphic you worked up there Pyro welcome to the competition.
P.S. No I don't a slap on the wrist will do... Bad FArt Mistress! BAD!

Ok while we seem to differ on RH (I don't care for it) and MST3K (I like a lot of it) I think we can all agree *puts on brown coat* on how awesome Firefly is.
That is a fine piece LD by all accounts and it sounds like you put a lot of thought into the theme and how it all relates together with the title. Well done on several levels.
I had to chuckle a little bit at the thought of an artist as talented as Lousy (still sounds funny to call you Lousy heh) going over his work with a fine tooth comb before posting it to try and spot "what CR will point out" hehe.
Quote:While that is a most impressive piece don't forget Crestent there is still Tigerztale, Eddy and BW, at least... IB/Tatyrsause? Deebs? Shia? TT? Projectionist? Bindweed? LJ? Alex?(and you Crestent if you are in this year?) and now that they know what they are up against it could be an interesting 5 days... heck Pirate Cashoo could still pop in and submit something yet ...and when are you gonna get in on one of these Suichiro???I think Lousy just won for this month, and we haven't even voted yet. O.O
...Gah 5 days! I'm so used to enjoying this as a spectator it's easy to forget I have to get something submitted too.
P.S. Wasn't there like 15-16 entrants last year? We need at least like 2 more per day or it's going to be a short contest.
-
Cool thanks for that... you know there was angry music in the 80's too.
-
Goes to peek...
Oh yeah and gratz Foo on achieving 30k views.
Any hints what's in store for LimeDolly?
-
Quote:Mwhahaha... err I mean, uhhh yeah sorry bout that Wassy. In 100% honesty, I totally did not see the hood thing until CR pointed it out. And now I can't stop seeing it!
It's the same for me too. I can literally stare at great art for hours and not get tired of seeing it but once I spot something like that I "can't" not see it.
It doesn't ruin the piece for me (great art whether comedic, stylized or otherwise is still great art) by any means, but it does distract me
so I feel prompted to speak (unless people tell me they would rather not know).
-
I'm tuned back in again... any chance we can get some Nightwish or Zombie in here? Or Cake would work too.
If you want specific suggestions
NW: Wish I had an Angel?
WZ: More Human than Human
Cake: Wheels or Dime
but really anything by the above would be cool... also got any good 80's stuffz?

Quote:Heh, I wasn't thinking of anything adult themed (you can click the button in my sig to see what kinds of things I've done lately with females) even though there is talk jokingly of making the thread into a "bewbie" thread I have yet to do someone's OC in this fashion... I would most likely ask anyone before I did unless I know them really well.
You're welcome
Yes, for the most part. PG is not nearly as well known, and thus I do not have the same problems the better-known characters around here (and their toons) have. That said, I can be pretty critical of pieces, and prefer to have editorial powers over the, er, "situations" that PG could be placed in. I think female creations tend to get placed in more adult-themed art than I really want for PG. Yes, she is aptly named.
That said, I have had a few people ask beforehand if they could draw her, and I sometimes agree.
And I still think Bayani's "costume" could inspire an "I Spy"-themed game.
The idea that occurred to me was more of a bust of PG with something like a planetary alignment happening in the background but *shrug* if I drew every idea that popped into my head I'd never get any "work" done.
Figured I'd ask anyway since it clearly wasn't OCR.
No posting Bayani or PG drawings, got it.
Quote:Hehe...ok ok, but to nitpick the nitpick since this seems to be spiraling already...I did say "here" as in specifically the "Screenshots and Fan Creations"...you technically only referenced one RL thread from said section. So again, it would be reasonably feasible that not all in this particular thread would know the full extent of a RL reference. Nor does exacting criticism make for a "technically" good criticism or for that matter does writing a wall of text distilling down every line stroke translate to someone having the "cojones" to write their thoughts.
In other words, some people just like to hear themselves talk. Or in this case...see their own banter written down to stir the pot. Which is, I hate to say in this case, seems to be the later...because CR, if you really were practicing what you preached, you would have fixed the tang glow orange around your avatar months ago on the lower lefthand side where a darken black smudge is (around the left ear and cheek from the viewer's perspective)...just sayin'And since your initials are CR...OCR just won't do.
PS - still waiting on your critique of my work CR!
Specifically all those links, except one, are in fact from the "Screenshot & Fan Creation" section of the boards... there are more but I'm not going to go linking to them all... you can use the search function just as easily as I can.
Not everyone knows??? Not everyone knows just about anything you could care to mention. The point still stands.
"Technically" it was not a very good criticism and I'm not the one who patted you on the head (I just lol'd at it) talk to Wassy about that one.
"writing a wall of text distilling down every line stroke" Is that what you think I do???
In this case I caught a flaw, I posted it, Bayani agreed and said it would get fixed in the inking stage (and though he never said thanks I think it's implied).
As for "cojones" I mean I often come out and just say (not to be offensive but for clarity's sake) what other people can't (if they didn't see it) or won't... or don't.
You don't have to read very far around the forum to see this.
Twice in this thread already... it's been hinted at and suggested but if anyone else recently has come out and just said hey lets be honest here is how you two are really different and neither is right or wrong they are just different approaches, well then I missed it or it was before my time on the boards.
Also there were over 200 page views and no one else had pointed out the hood was wrong... do you think I am the only one who noticed?
You may not see it but it's clearly OCR
(heh I should put that in my sig or something)
P.S. pointing out things that can be improved in a piece someone is paying money for
or a piece being entered into a contest is one thing but nitpicking their avatar is something you should NOT
do unless you know them real well. My avatar is personal cuz it's me and I do not see any smudges or flaws...
it's the way it is because I want it to be that way thankyou not at all.
Quote:Heh, pretty much my sentiment. There's good fan fiction out there...and though it's usually the bad ones that get alot of attention. If I can't "see" a good story/premise for an encounter between my characters and someone else's...I'm not going to try to force the issue. There's plenty of other stuff (pr0n) to share over the net.
Wait is this some of that lesbian phillipino stick fighting pr0n I hear about?
...ok cool with mewhat was that shared IP again now...?
Quote:This is true. That particular flaw in the art will be corrected when it's inked. This is still technically a WIP, I just wanted to share it before someone else gets the same idea to create a parody/homage to Skottie's pic.
Quote:I haven't read a comic in a while now (don't ask why, I do not know, just aint happened) but seriously....who is the artist currently drawing on SpiderMan?
He truly is awful! The proportions...eurgh!
and also...
So do I actually Bayani and TA just make it more funny somehow.
Sidenote: Hey Bayani, out of curiosity is there going to be a thought bubble on TA like the one Deadpool has? And if so what might be going on in his mind? a miniature Bayani with distorted anatomy, too many pouches and no feet?
-
Quote:Wouldn't that be "on" of the three?Heh, sometimes CR I think you are a tightrope walker... Because sometimes you sounds like you're treading a very thin line between pompous and whiney
But it's amusing to watch so we luvs ya anyway!
But seriously... I think it's become apparent you spend more time looking at each and every nook and crannie than the average joe, that your weird, twisted brain latches onto minutia... So would seem only expected that when your crazy cranium doesn't recognize something it searches for some odd thing that fits the pattern and shoves that in it's place...
Or you're demented. On of the twoPompous, Whiney and Demented?
You forget the possibility of all the above, they are not mutually exclusive ya knowz.
Quote:Yes. Yes you do...
Good luck with finding some who'll put up with ya!
This is more my "board persona" than how I am in RL day to day (I know, I know... I was shocked too)
but yeah it seems good friends that are creative, intelligent, funny and into videogames
are hard to come by in my neck of the woods.
P.S. you cannot 7 size a tongue emote but nice try.
Quote:I can definitely relate to being with people who see, but do not see. I don't usually notice odd shape pairings, but I'm big on noticing colors, texture, and light. Light especially. I'm addicted to the interplay of shadow and light (also why I notice things about color), and I point out things while out and about that people around me never notice.
I often miss shape pairings, though. Not surprised, really. My overall vision is abnormal, so I have to see by specifically focusing. If I'm looking at a wide area, I'm unable to see parts of it. Its why I always appreciate having weird stuff that I might do pointed out to me.
Of course... sometimes a shoe is just a shoe! But I loves ya anyway ^.^
...yeah I know...
ya wanna tone it down a bit though... you'll make Eddy jealous.
Seriously have you ever seen a green Swan? No? Well it's aint' pretty trust meh. -
Could say the same thing about... say Firefly or really anything else for that matter.
Even a lame show could be fun with the right people.
