I would just add that this contest is in it's third year now and we have a really wide range of talent, from pencils to markers, from digital art to graphic design (heck we almost has a sculptor) and 17 different artists submitted pieces this time around, which I believe is the new record (and enough to keep the contest going all year
).
Everyone with an active game account is eligible to vote this year, so go spread the word your peeps in the 606 (the Artz forum) need your votes.
Brief rundown of how it works.
This is an elimination style event where each artist must submit a piece every month, before the deadline, based on the theme chosen by our serving FArt Master or Mistress to remain in the contest. Then once the deadline has passed a new thread will open which will clearly be marked with the word "VOTE" where the you guys get to go choose your favorites.
Person with the most votes wins Immunity from elimination for the following month.
Person with the fewest votes gets kicked off the island... err forum. Okay not really... but they are like out of the competition and stuffz.
January "VOTE" thread is already live so head on over and show your support for the artists... and oh yeah before I forget this years "special" bonus qualification is the "Hot Chick Rule."
Every piece, submitted every month, by every artist must have a "hot chick" in it somewhere. How that is interpreted is entirely up to the artist.
January's theme was the Olympics. (Vote now for your favorite!)
February's theme will be "Love is in the air/Pinups"
***A quick heads up (as you probably guessed from the above line) this is art and while January was totally G rated, kid friendly and "safe for work" some months may be more "R" rated.
All the necessary precautions have been taken and there will be no direct links (two click rule is effect) from these forums to pieces that depict nudity.
But for those that do have children or want to follow along from work just know that some months there will be some decidedly NSFW images.***

Quote:It would be more than fine... February is also Black History Month.Oh yeah, you'll definitely have to vote for 3 different pieces. Everyone will need to figure their top three, and this should solve any elimination problems pretty well.
What do you mean by "dark" exactly, LD? Subject matter or colors? I just want to make sure, because people could end up doing dark-colored characters in a cheeky pin-up. And that's fine.
Another bonus tie-in is...
Ok I'm going to stop giving ideas to my fellow competitors now lol.

couldn't help myself
Newbie question: If a contestant fails to submit a piece for a month, are they out of the contest for the rest of the year?

Quote:So if someone is ignorant of what's in the CC they wouldn't relate the two images. Many of the tops in the cc are very similar to tops seen in comics. JK's position was that it was similar to ones in coh, but that similarity isn't sufficient to place it concretely in the coh universe--there have been lots of costumes like that in other places. If I saw this in someone's gallery with no comments, I would not assume that it was a cox character. It may not even occur to me that the image was in any way related to cox.
Okay I get that but you are not ignorant, nor is Johnnykat by his own words.
You can't have it both ways.
Regardless... you don't have to "assume" anything...
Looks sufficiently concrete to me.
Quote:He didn't call any of them out for being unfit. He didn't make any qualitative statement about the work. He questioned whether or not they fulfilled the guidelines laid out in the contest. They are not the same thing.
Hey I'm all for making fine distinctions if it turns a wrong into a right...
but when it turns wrong into well... still wrong, then I tend to care less. *shrug*
It's has already been decided and isn't going to be changed by any of this. Right?
Quote:Lol that's what I mean. Defended them against what? He wasn't attacking those pieces, he was questioning their relevance to one of the rules. Wassy has defined that rule as based on intent. If rule was based solely on the image itself without printed description or statement of intent, then I would agree with JK's point about grey area.
...and, speaking of people unnecessarily defending other people, remind me again why I'm having this discussion with you???
You wouldn't be defending Jk would you? Against what? He isn't being attacked, he is being told he was wrong on this occasion.
FD "I think you're taking it a bit too personally."
Right then, moving on...
I'll be over in the February thread lookin @ da pinups.
Yeah Firefox here but I also have IE6 and Google chrome on other machines if you need something tested. -
So then it sounds like the idea of Multi-vote/Multi-points is a winner. Good but I think the "cant vote for the same piece more than once" stipulation I made earlier is still needed otherwise a few people casting all 3votes/6points for the same piece will still unbalance it.
-
Cool, gratz on the gift... lets see some artz!
-
Cool theme and I am a big fan of Olivia and to a lesser extent Vargas (before my time)... hmmm.
I brought this up in the Jan thread but looks like the discussion of it has come up here.
Lowest previous vote might work in later months but won't help if this comes up in Feb and a bunch of people also had zero in Jan.
Now sure I care for the random number as it speaks nothing of the art.
You could give everyone two votes with the stipulation that you cannot vote for the same piece twice. I think if everyone who voted for LousyDay this month also had to choose a "Not LousyDay" piece their 2nd votes would be a lot more spread out. It would allow people to vote for something else they liked and yet not have to pass up the obvious "favorite."
Also it would solve the problem for all the people agonizing between two pieces... vote for both.
Quote:Aside from the fact that a single character male pin-up would be in violation of the hot chick rule (and require a hefty dose of brain bleach to blot it outPinups doesn't mean couples. In fact, the majority of pinups is a single person/character (typically female, but there are plenty of male pinups around!)
Nor does 'romance' HAVE to be showing two people.), Agge is correct, you needn't do a couples piece to show romance.
-
The current voting trend raises a question. What happens if, say in Feb, we get a totally lopsided vote and a few pieces get all the votes and like a dozen get no votes at all? Do we all vote again for which of the 12 shouldn't be eliminated? Also if after the 2nd round there are still say 6 with no votes then who stays and who goes... is there a plan in place should this happen?
-
Quote:I disagree.Johnny said the costume is similar to what could be made with the cox costume creator. The majority of those designs are similar to ones found from comic books. He's not contradicting himself. I also don't see him pointing the finger at anyone.
There was a flap over the application of the rules. He was questioning the application of those rules in some of the other entries which he found questionable. I think you're taking it a bit too personally.
The top in question looks just like one in the CC, he clearly saw it or he would not have mentioned the CC, but then said there was no clear reference. That is a contradiction.
I don't see what comic books have to do with it.
He called into question/singled out several entries as being unfit. Pointing the finger is just an expression describing that.
Fill in the blank with a different one if the finger reference is troublesome to you.
Took it personal? He raised his concerns and I addressed them point for point.
I defended several pieces and not just my own... sorry Bdub but I don't see what you mean by that?
Heck I even thanked him for his compliment in the midst of addressing his points. *shrug*
I'm not saying he (or anyone else) shouldn't raise concerns or question entries at all.
I have done so in the past and noticed/was going to again about Shia's piece this year...
Only thing is the ones I pointed out were in fact violations of the rules.
Jk was wrong and all the ones he pointed out met the criteria and have qualified... it bore mentioning.

Quote:Similar point could be made about your piece Jk.Originally Posted by JohnnykatMy point, while I really like LD's and Swanzy's pieces, both fall into somewhat gray area in my mind. I mean, LD's had a nice explanation, but honestly nothing about it screams CoX. Yes it is a pasty white female character, but aside from a faint reference to dark eye patches I don't see it as Ghost Widow (and I wouldn't have had it was not for the written explanation).
To me Lousy Day's piece immediately read as Ghost Widow.
Her distinguishing characteristics are prominently displayed, from her long, wispy, pure white hair, to her pale skin and of course her trademark (there is nothing faint about them) dark eye circles.
She is not in uniform but her outfit is part of what is tying her to the Olympic event of figure skating so it keeps with the theme of the month and works well.
More important I don't see anything that immediately contradicts GW in her appearance...
Quote:Originally Posted by JohnnykatAnd then there's Swanzy, which is very cool, but is it assumed that a superhero/heroine is instantly CoX specific? Aside from the costume being similar to what one could make with the CoH costume editor, there are no clear CoH references.
You recognize her costume is from the CC but there are no clear CoH references? You're contradicting yourself here.
And the levitating barbell doesn't say Gravity Controller to you?
If you are referring to the fact that he took some artistic license with her shoulders being bare (yes I noticed it) while the actual costume top (if memory serves it's called "Mod Sleeve") has shoulders that are partially covered but with holes in them you are really going to an extreme here and again you should look at your own piece (you take a lot of artistic license too) before pointing a finger at others.
(Sidenote: Eddy, Love the piece but seriously those balls at the end of the bar look like the conical nipple covers exotic dancers use (errr... so I'm told that is). This is not in any way a complaint... carry on!
)
Quote:Originally Posted by JohnnykatAnd finally, there is CR's piece that makes me think of a game like Everquest or WoW which is more of a fantasy based game. Again, a nicely drawn piece, but the only reference to CoH is being a questionable fire imp (I think).
If you're referring to her elven ears they are in Coh too and many other games as well.
Are you meaning her Greek garb perhaps? That, along with the background and torch ceremony,
is there to tie into the Olympic theme and is not indicative of a Fantasy setting.
If you mean something else please be specific?
Thank you for the "nicely drawn" compliment.
The imp is by no means the only reference to CoH... perhaps you missed the Victory Laurel on her head? Her distinctive hairstyle?
The Helenic Sandals (with the little wings on them)? All these are recognizable "City of" costume pieces.
And while on the subject of the imp I don't understand why it's "questionable"... you obviously recognize it or you wouldn't have named what it is.
You are of course entitled to your opinion but you seem to be implying it looks nothing like a Fire Imp?
Well what are a Fire Imps distinguishing characteristics, and does my pic convey any of them? Let's see...
Three ridiculously elongated and pointy fingers plus a short spike for a thumb? Check.
Elongated skull with an overly pointed chin? Yep.
Fiery body and head? Uh hunh.
Forearms, chest and face that read darker than the rest of the body? Betcha betcha.
Tiny glowing circular eyes? Roger that.
Awkward joints and legs that end in blocky stumps (read: no actual feet or toes)? Bingo!
Sidenote: Unless you are very skilled/practiced at it and have plenty of time to work, trying to draw a creature made of mostly light with a drawing utensil that only makes dark lines is a considerable challenge. I don't have the advantage of color in my pieces to convey "fire" nor can I "draw with light" like someone using photoshop can, I can put down only black and shades of gray.
Taking those two factors into account I think this...
looks pretty close to these...
This is just more of what you did with LD's piece calling GW's eye circles (which are black circles on a white surface lol) "faint."
I see what you're doing but I don't understand why you are doing it.

Resins, polymers, some gold and silver paints and a CD/DVD spindle with, what I'm sure is, his "backup" copy of Final Fantasy Volume 2?
Nice work on these I bet it looks awesome as a full suit.

I am in favor of giving the vote a few days to happen before unveiling the next theme.

Quote:It's the gift that keeps giving.Okay there was no way that this piece was going to get finished tonight, but there is enough done to give the gift of boobs
Beautifully rendered Clutch.
Quote:I'm intrigued!!
Very, very nice... And excellant work on the knotwork generally, though it is a bit wrong in the center where the flesh shows through...

She did indeed...
***sneaks away to draw some quick Birfday Artzes***

Numbers 11 and 12 are up in my New Artz thread!
11 is the central figure in my FArt submission for January the Greek-ified Xllusya
and 12 is a birthday present to our serving FArt Mistress Wassy, gratz and Happy B-day! -
Indeed I did buddy.
Speaking of presents... **looks around**
What's this? No Birthday Gift Artz?!?!??!!
Unacceptable! This is something I shall have to remedy post haste...
You should sneak a peek in my New Artz Thread Wassy (button in my sig) ...hint hint.
P.S. How many spankings do you get for being 21... I forget.
-
Hahaha I totally saw Fizgig too and I haven't seen The Dark Crystal in over a decade.
There is also a little hint of Animal from the Muppetshow.
Nice work Crestent... I think Kilo still kicks around DA
(he was there back when I drew him anyways) you should note him the link to this.

Happy B-Day Wassy!
Here's wishing you a day filled with cake, presents and bewbiez!
...not necessarily in that order. -
It was OCR.
Quote:Bwahaha, great way to beat the clock, Clutch!
Don't forget to get it in the January FArt Competition folder in the dA group!!!
In case Clutch went to sleep and forgot to put it up to DA... it still counts that he made it in right?

Quote:Ya made it just in time man! Welcome aboard... and that is a nice piece for something you just threw out last minute./commando-rolls through the closing contest doors like Indiana Jones
Okay it's not pretty but I didn't know I was going to join in the fun until a moment ago

Lots of funny gags and I lol'd at the fine print... Honest Tony's Completely Non Mafia Related Web Design, heh.

Quote:Thanks for all the help getting out the word, CR! Your efforts are very much appreciated.
=3 just for you
Quote:CR, I'm sure you used your infinite coercion skills to get David Nakayama to enter... Right? That's the big suprise, right??? RIGHT????
Wassy. =3 errr, what's that supposed to be? To my way overtired brain it looks like, errrr, a male stick and his chestnuts???
I did mention it to him though...
I had to ask about this too... I understood from something Suichiro said that it was cat related
(probably makes sense to those that have cats).
Wassy, as I understand it, uses this cat smile when she is
"feeling especially warm and squishy" about something... ahem.
Clutch I sent you another PM with the answers to all your questions,
if ya need anything else just let me know or ask our FArt Mistress Wassy.Cheers.

Quote:Cool! Welcome aboard Bindweed... I was worried you hadn't gotten my PM in time.Phew... I forgot how close this deadline was, but have finally managed to knock out a quick sketch here: http://happy-dan.deviantart.com/art/...ncer-151368008
I think it meets the requirements, if we can pretend that Ms Liberty does wield Excalibur, and that there really is a Magic Sword category in the fencing.
And I'm a good boy. I've also cross posted to the CoH FArt gallery at DA.
Quote:Nicely done!
Well, nicely done to everyone, really. This is an interesting contest (and topic), and it's cool to see what people are coming up with
Now excuse me, I must get back to my lurking
so your fine no matter what) slap an Olympic logo and a hot chick in it and get the hell in on this!
Now if Alex, would just respond to my PM notes and emails lol we could build a nice big pool of contestants for this year... mwhahah.
**goes off to pester more people**

Quote:This.2nd edit: wow, my first edit got stuck in way the wrong spot - proof I should go to sleep & not edit posts on my mobile...
Well, CR's piece uses his actual CoH character...
As for myself, I'm glad I tire Jutal in at the last minute!
All in all though, I think the intention was kind of clear that characters that fit into CoX should be included and not that they had to be definite CoX ones...
To insist on characters that definitely existed would require people to prove they had a character that looked like their art (before they submitted it) or stick to canon characters... Proving you had the char before the art would be bothersome and using just canon chars would be overly restricted..
Edit:
Scoots, I actually have more connection in my piece than just Jutal... You are watching PNN (Paragon News Network), the show is call Paragon Today (I think today... Or did I go with tonight?) and Lord Recluse is mentioned in the scroll bar as having Etoille Islands boycott the games
Using characters that just fit in seems to follow the spirit of the rule to me where as the lack of a hot chick seemed an oversight or an ignoring of the rule and it's spirit...
Quote:CR not only used what I know to be his CoH character, but a fire imp, which is a great way for a CoX torch to be lit.
-
I took a long lunch and put another two hours into the piece to clean up lots of little things and to add the "red carpet."
I also reduced the file to a much more manageable 1600x1200 down from 3250x2450.
About 9 hours into it total and 5 separate drawings merged with photoshop into the final composite.
I'll be putting up the WIP's and individual parts into my 40 in 60 thread for those that like looking at the behind the scenes stuff.

Quote:There went that theory hahaha. No Swanzy Goodness nor CR orangeness yet so you still have time not to be last
Quote:CR, is that a Fire Imp I see lighting the Olympic Flame?
LOL
Very nice piece.
Xllusya lost her lighter you see and...
Quote:My sources have confirmed that it is no "fire imp" being used to light the Olympic torch but rather a Rikti Monkey. I am currently organizing the mobilization of all animal rights compaigners to protest this outrageous and inhuman cruelty to such a kind and noble...
errr, excuse me?
Aliens??
Nevermind.
And we posted like within 5 minutes of each other hehe. It's almost like, "...well Frost you might not be last... after all Christopher and Eddie still haven't pos... oh damn... nevermind."
