    Two thoughts.
#1. Love that you are quoting Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride (although the actual quote is "I do not think it means what you think it means").
#2. It means precisely what I take it to mean. Modesty can be loosely defined as having a humble opinion of one's self. Were I to put that aside for the moment (in other words were I to NOT be modest) I could honestly state, what I believe to be, one of my greatest areas of proficiency. That being pattern recognition.

It would be difficult to make such a claim of excellence while attempting even a modicum of modesty.

Last solved according to what? Posting order (meaning given a list of 20 puzzles how many will jump down and try to solve #17 first)? Typing speed? Lucky Guessing?
Also basing point awards on a fixed percentage of a variable number can introduce fractions. Without a fixed number (equal for every artist) you could conceivably find yourself hoping that no more than 6½ people figure your puzzle out.

I am not saying I don't trust Bubba to figure something out (I'm actually hoping he already has) but trying to point out what I see as not feasible/workable and suggest what I think might be.

If he has something already planned great, if not, I've given one possible suggestion (and by all means please do point out any flaws in it that you see) for people to refine or disregard if a better solution can be found.
  2. Sorry Bubba but one quick correction to your scoring count for this month.

Airhead has 10 points not 7.

It still doesn't change his standing in the ranks but he actually did get a first place vote and it should be counted.
  3. Yeah another long breakdown... what can ya do?
It's not merely pointing out the issues I see but there is a potential solution offered at the end.

Let me first say this sounds like a very interesting and challenging theme/month Bubba. Good work coming up with something new.
Also your rules are a lot more thorough now and take into account more contingencies.

Couple things I wonder about though in regards to audience participation.
I've left a half dozen easter eggs in my pieces and as far as I know no one has spotted any of them (not seen a post or gotten a PM) yet... I didn't think them that hard to find but maybe no one was really trying.

So what happens then if no one really takes the time to try and find your secret?

Also 25% of what? voters? people who happen to guess? The less interest in a piece the harder to meet the burden of more than 2 but less than 25%.
i.e. if 20 people guess at mine between 2-5 getting it correct wins 2pts. But say another contestant only got 8 guesses he would have to get exactly two people to guess correctly.

Many people will not tell you if they cannot guess what something is they will remain silent thereby reducing the number of guessers.

Once someone posts what it is won't everyone know it? If you are going to ask people to PM you guesses how do you know they haven't spoken to each other. One figures it out and tells a friend now there are two correct guesses.

An artist could simply make it impossibly obscure and then tell two friends the correct answer and presto maximum points.

****note: I am not suggesting anyone here would do these things just that they are possibilities****

Putting aside modesty for the moment, I can honestly say I am exceptionally good at spotting hidden things in art/text/advertising. It would be right up my alley if the points were earned by spotting others but obscuring my own but in this scenario I could be potentially giving my fellow competitors points by doing so. It would actually be in my best interest to stay silent even if I spot the message in all the entries.

These are a couple of the issues I see possible but having said that I think I know a solution that addresses them all.

Ask for volunteers to PM you. Choose a fixed number of guessers but do not disclose how many there are.
Don't tell the artists who has been chosen and don't even tell the ones chosen who their fellow guessers are.
The day before the reveal of all pieces send all guessers a PM with each of the images submitted and give them a certain amount of time.
Each guesser must give a guess for each of the pieces or say they have no clue.
Tabulate the results and award the points respectively.

It's not perfect but it would ensure that each guesser will not be influenced by the others (they don't know who they are) or by the public either as the public won't have seen any of the pieces yet (and so cannot accidentally blurt out an answer). It also ensures each Artist gets the same number of guessers at the same skill level trying to find the message in each of their pieces so it's a level playing field in that regard too. Finally if anyone was trying to purposely help/hinder a particular contestant they wouldn't know if to guess correctly or not say anything (assuming they solved the puzzle) because they don't know who else is guessing or how many figured it out already.

This seems like a lot of busy work but it's the best solution I can come up with, given the parameters, at the moment.
Anyone else have thoughts on the matter?

  4. Nice work bug and welcome back.
Glad you decided to start a thread to pool your art (it's what all the cool kids are doing these days apparently )
  5. Congratulations LousyDay.
(don't think it's any secret that he won this time)
  6. Updated the Player Events threads and EU Lounge a few days back. I would ask again that someone else please take over. It just takes a few minutes each month to post a link to the current months vote thread.

While I want as many people to participate in the voting as possible I don't want to give the impression that I'm asking for votes since I am also a contestant. I think it'd be better if someone impartial handled it.
  7. I'm thankful for gift artz! I've gotten some really cool art done of my characters by people here.

Also I'm very thankful for the entire 606 artz section. It's a great community of artists and art collectors/appreciators and they've
inspired me to pick up the pencils and start drawing again after an almost 8 year period of not creating anything.
Their comments and constructive criticism have helped keep me on point and the contests they've
held have kept me challenged and interested in trying new styles and mediums.

I've drawn over 100 pieces just this last year (mostly City of Heroes themed gift art) and really worked at
improving my skills. I look forward to more cool artz in the years to come. Cheers!

P.S. Oh and I'm thankful to WarWitch for letting me use her
namesake character's likeness for a contest entry.

    Thankyou Melissa.
  8. Already started your sketch right after I posted that you had won.
I went through each of the refs under your sig banner and had to chuckle when I saw a character based in part on a Zombie Girl song.
I figured, chosen by White Zombie, based on Zombie Girl that's too good to pass up.

So yeah Trioxin is what I went with (the labcoat wearing version that's on your virtueverse page).
Thanks for the extra refs I'll look em over and see if there is anything more I can glean from them.

P.S. One question I did have, should there be any signs of obvious decay (ragged hair, missing skin etc) or is she still well preserved and human looking aside from the blank white eyes?
  9. Haha is that a pink Super DD cape on a smiley? Lol looks like you're customizing everything now.

*seriously people you should see her car... it has custom paint, chrome, emblems... and a pink cape... no really it has a cape*
  10. Nevahz! Eeetz mine! Mine I tellz ya! *cough cough*
...errr yeah you should check it out more often VexXxa.

    I await more shiny artz.
  11. Ding Ding Ding we have a winner!
Wow those rounds were pretty much opposite, the first round I just picked number 7 myself and someone got it almost immediately,
the 2nd round I decided to let my music collection choose. I loaded up a few thousand songs, hit random
play and the first song with a number in it was an old White Zombie track.

And this time it was one of the absolute last numbers guessed.
Thanks for playing everyone who guessed and congratz goes to Ransim!

Still a couple chances to win people stay tuned for round three coming soon.
  12. The last one has a cool Hellboy-ish look to it. I like it.

Also this only took me 5 minutes to do.
Granted it loses some of the pencils texture but then I only had a low rez copy from this page to work with and much of that will get lost in the coloring process anyways.

Point is with a copy of photoshop these days there really is no reason an artist you are paying money to can't get the little things like this done right. You can always ask for it or have it done after the fact if he is not willing.

P.S. Foo's really been working on his foreshortened poses of late and his stuff shows constant improvement. That Fenian piece is a nice addition.
  13. Okay no problem, I'll try and post some more basic lines then with no shading later.

I went with that pic of Xodious first because there were many things it could use (flats, colors, a background etc) and even those that don't do color could tinker with it and try making a texture for the fabric of his hood or a power effect etc.
  14. What was a trick question?

A clever Back to the Future reference lol.
  15. Np, some very useful tips being posted here, thanks to those posting and if you know how to do something well by all means share it here.
  16. Well one done already I guess, although I didn't know at the time I drew it. Farewell Rose.

P.S. There is a thread now where you can post up lines and people will collaborate to add colors and other touches here.
  17. The color looks good on him, you might want to adjust the saturation in some areas a bit though.
I would say darken his hair and eyebrows some too. It's really coming along nicely.
  18. Thanks PS.
So got something you want to try working on?
  19. Right accidentally then. Hmmm how to put this delicately...

I hope your favorite character to play doesn't have a business card...
or that she is not listed in a telephone directory anywhere?

I commissioned a piece of her by the ever so talented John Becaro@dA, and I think it turned out rather well.

The mark across her face was actually meant to be a scar that splits her nose a bit, a battle wound of the most serious kind, but somehow it ended up looking like its in game interpretation-- regardless, I love it because she even has the wakizashi that she uses from time to time.

I have some art of some non CoH characters but I doubt that's kosher, so I think this might be it for a bit, I'll have to go scouring my galleries and make sure, but I should have new pieces in soon~ <3
Love the art... one thing bothers me though.
I wonder if you did that accidentally or on purpose.
If accidental you may want to get it changed, if purposeful... it's hilarious.

I'd try to make a rhyme with that, but all I've got is 'rose'.

    3, 5, 9, 14, 15, 18, 19, 22, 31, 36, 38, 41, 45, 46, 47, 48, 51, 53, 58, 59, 61, 63, 65, 67, 68, 75, 78, 80, 83, 85, 89, 91, 93, 94, 96, 98

Well there's hose (garden not pimpsmackin), Bro's, flows, knows, doze, goes, pose, toes... I could go on but I think I've said too much already.

    OHNOZ!

Still no winner yet. With the number of people now picking though it
can only last a few more cycles (of course it could end at any moment too) so choose wisely.

That's what DD (and others) have told me in the past, my response has been you don't really know what you are capable of until you try.
The fact that you were able to warp your scales around the musculature in a very believable fashion (rather than just slapping on a texture and calling it a day) tells me you have a good eye for how things should look. That alone will get you far, if you apply yourself.

Besides you are in good company here, there are about half a dozen people who have all started trying to learn how to color digitally in recent months. Working collaboratively we can all learn from each other.

Okay then here is a sketch I did last year for the FArt that never made it past the pencil stage if someone wants to take a crack at adding some flats, colors or a cloth texture you are welcome to go for it.

    Refs can be found here.
  23. A triple collab! AWESOMESAUCE! Really like the colors you chose DD and Ransim the scales you added were a great touch.
They were too uniform to begin with but after you warped them around the musculature it looked great.
Felt I could add some more to this piece by bending and shaping the scales further
and adding some more tonal variation and contrast.
Threw in some lightning fx to boot.

    Click Click Rawr!

Also I started a thread for this kind of stuffz.
  24. Decided to start a thread for people who want to share and collaborate on artwork together as I really liked what came about as a result of 3 people working together on GQ's Storm Dragon piece. I thought there should be more of this so now we have a place for it.

People can post up linework and others can add colors and textures and the community at large can offer suggestions and constructive criticism.

    Two things I would ask.
#1. Keep it respectful. I encourage people to share thoughts about what is good or what is lacking in a given piece but try to be polite when doing so.

#2. Make a mention in this thread that you plan on working on someone's piece. Some people may post up lines and say anyone is free to do whatever they want with them (in that case go to town) but barring that it's best to just say "hey mind if I work on that?" before you do so.

I'll post up some lines here momentarily to get the ball rolling.
