  1. Also you don't need Photoshop to color. DD is using Paint Shop Pro, Henri uses GIMP (which is completely free) and there are several other low cost or completely free programs (paint.net is another) to digitally color stuff with.

If you must have an Adobe product you don't really need the latest CS5 as most people will never use even half of what that program can do (and it costs over $700 retail), grab their "lite" version of photoshop (which is called Elements). It has all the basic tools you could ever want and the ability to import more stuff into it down the road.
I built a computer for a woman recently who wanted to try out some arts/crafts and photo correction. I found her a used copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements for $20.

    So yeah, colorz nao!

    Belated B-days

How exactly does one forget they owe you a robot exoskeleton?

Oh and make sure to remind me to drop off that laser powered hover tank you asked about.
  3. It depends on what kind of hair you want to do? Typically hair can be conveyed with shapes, colors or lines (if you want to draw individual strands) or some combination of those.

Drawing the "strandy" kind is all about the patterns. Hair (unless you stick your finger in a light socket ) tends to gather together in clumps and those clumps hang in different patterns depending on things like wind, tilt of the head etc. There really aren't that many ways it can bend or shape itself naturally so once you understand the various basic patterns you can mix and match them to create most any look or style. It's similar to wrinkles in fabric it looks really complex until you understand the basic shapes. That said I don't really ever think about it when I draw it I just mindlessly scribble really fast for the first layer and then build on top of that with more layers (that is for drawing dark hair, with lighter hair you usually need lighter lines and less of them to suggest the shape) and it usually comes out pretty good.

That's my take but then I usually only do the linework (strandy) type but I'm trying to learn more about making convincing hair with just shapes and colors.
I'm sure others here who have more experience with the other methods could add a variety of tips or thoughts to that.

Nice idea to use Princess Leia's secret message (pleading for Obi Wan to come and rescue her) from Star Wars by the way.

P.S. You really should use a higher resolution on the symbols Bubba as the transliteration was really the only tricky part about this cipher.
Also I believe you meant to say - "there's not enough information to decipher it" as it's not actually a code (people often confuse code with cipher ).

Chris, as you know I always value your critic. What's your advice on the background? I wanted a stormy, dramatic feel to the piece to add to the inhuman, emotionless nature of H3. I thought it worked ok, but always happy to hear opinions. Also, sorry if I sound curt, I,m typing from phone.
Alas I don't have time just yet to do a full write up. Sent you a PM though.

P.S. That dot pattern shading you mention was called Zip-a-tone (also Screentone).

P.P.S. Am I the only one wondering when we get the next issue of the above comic?
Not that I don't love what you are doing lately with your paints but you left us on a 2,000 year cliffhanger. Moar Nao!
  6. FYI if anyone else is going to add to my tweaked version there was an update
(easily visible as I gave her a longer neck and slightly wider shoulders).

    Post 37/38 has it.

    Belated B-days

While I was away over the weekend I see we had a couple birthdays. Sorry they got missed (I blame Kheldarn ).

Happy Belated Birthday wishes to both Ironik and Lousy Day, hope they were good ones.
Also while it doesn't show up anywhere Baron Overlord's (Ennvee's squeeze) was recently past too.

P.S. While I'm at it Happy Birthday to Troy Hickman (his is today).
  8. Hey Soobooku I like the green tint you gave that background... is there any way you could do that with a ingame background?

What zone would be a good backdrop? A laboratory of some kind perhaps or something that looks like a research facility?
    Perhaps a question for Ransim?
  9. Yeah you had it right the first time the genus and species are two separate words but the former is being bleeped by the curse filter
because it's also a derogatory slang term for gay (which used to just mean happy) in this country... etymology is funny like that sometimes.

No worries, I understand what you meant to say.
  10. Figured I would try and tweak this a bit over lunch.
Anyone who wants to tweak it further or add some kind of background feel free to do so.

Also the hair being in front of the shoulder was giving a mis-aligned
look that was bugging me so I redid both shoulders, I think it's an improvement.
  11. I'm really enjoying seeing the queen done in so many styles.
  12. Lol crafting tables in an MA arc. Genius!

...of course it makes the invention table I earned on my two main auctioneers a little less necessary heh (although it's still pretty
handy to be able to craft a drop instantly or make a new rocket pack, envenomed dagger etc mid-mission if they should happen to run out).
  13. Some very nice improvements Lord Goat. I really like that her feet are in the grass now. Much more believable (unless she was meant to be hovering).

One thing I find myself wanting though every time I look at that Lizzie piece is to have the lightning/electricity played up.
Some hotspots of white or really light blue over the color already present and to have it actually
affecting her skin tone (casting light, shadows and some blue-ish tones on her skin).
That and perhaps wet skin from the rain... yeah tall order I know.

P.S. Here's something else to keep you busy.

...wait does steak count? I do love a good steak.
  15. No pressure or anything.

Started your drawing but I have to go back out and shovel again so it probably won't be done until tomorrow sometime.

Allow me to play devils advocate for a moment TBA. The vote leader in the past always had an advantage (immunity) but no choice of when to use it.

    Everyone else had nothing.

Now under Bubba's system everyone gets access to some advantages and everyone gets a choice of when and how to use them. I'm not saying I agree with the system 100% as it is but if the above quoted bits correctly reflect your situation and you envision that you are not going to be leading the votes (due to RL time constraints etc) then shouldn't you actually prefer the new system? You have advantages and a choice whereas under the previous system if you aren't in the lead you've got nothing.

You are actually getting penalized less because you are guaranteed to have enough points to save yourself in a couple ways whereas before (the first time you missed the deadline for submission or got the least amount of points) you would just be out of the contest. How can you get penalized more than that?
    Am I misunderstanding something?

Wow gratz DD I also have yet to start mine (though I do have a good idea I am in the usual position of wondering if I can effectively pull it off or not).
  17. Okay so after tabulating teh funniez, of the entries made before the deadline, I laughed the most at Bru_Tal's post. Congratz!
(I don't see a link anywhere so please send me some screenies and basic info on some of your characters and I'll get started on your prize )

Here were a few of the ones I came up with, enjoy.

    1.
A: Okay so what do you call a Jamaican in the Warriors gang who's fallen on his own sword??? A Poke-'mon! Get it?

B: The sad results of critically failing ones save vs. self impalement roll.

C: So I was like "Oh yeah? Prove it Romeo..."

    2.
A: Slightly less well known than Brass Monday was Woody Wednesday a day that would live on only in hushed terrified whispers of those unfortunate enough to witness it.

B: Hang on man! I'll have ya outta that tree in a jiffy. *draws Nemesis Staff*

C: Wilson! This is not what I meant by "barking" mad... stop that this instant, there are kids playing in that park across the street!

    3.
A: Ahhh so that's why they call him "Coma"-torium.

B: So we gonna fight? Or are you just gonna like lay there all passed out n stuffz.

C: You know you've really let yourself go when there's both a urinal and a floor drain within a few feet and yet you still manage to stain the floor.

    4.
A: Back, back, back, waaaay back! Going going GONNNNE!

B: Where did that pesky Tuatha disappear to? He should've landed around here somewhere.

C: Unwilling to endure the atrocious pun of a bat wielding hero name Louisville the Tuatha decided it was better to just end it now, with a final salute he jumped.

    5.
A: Captain I'm detecting large amounts of WTF in this sector!

B: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, SPOCK!

C: Oooh civilian in danger! This looks like a job for! ...oh wait it's a trekkie.

    6:
A: *Best Admiral Ackbar voice* It's a TRAP!

B: The good news is I don't think they noticed me, bad news is they seem to be staring at the box... waiting.

C: Wait a minute why is that present hovering??? I got a bad feeling about this.
  18. HAX!

    errr I mean congratz Roxy.
  19. Like the idea, two things (just my own impressions) though, there must be easier-to-read-at-a-distance fonts to use and I never had trouble making out the tech beacons even when I was new (they are essentially color photos of distinct features or landmarks)... it's the magic ones that look like poorly drawn and faded scrolls that need to be redone.

That said there are a few of the tech pics I would change if I had the say, like of the examples you have showing above the Faultline and Boomtown ones are too similar for someone not familiar. Why not just make the Faultline one a picture of the big donut with sprinkles on top of the shop that is unique to that zone (something everyone would instantly recognize) rather than a shot of the rubble which many zones have in common?

  22. They are two of my favorites as well, Eddy is doing ok also (for those who didn't know)
he was for the most part unaffected by the hurricanes that battered Australia and is currently out jobhunting.

Noticed this gift artz over on his website.

Apparently he lurks here, saw the collab thread and wanted in on it.
You really should check out the large version (clicking the image here will take you to his site, then click
the image there to get a bigger version, click a third time to magnify and see it full size) as there are some great details that don't show up at this resolution.

He's got some other really cool stuffz over there too.
  24. Last day to get your captions in.
