  1. Hey there Yin, cool re-imagining of Sister Psyche and welcome to the Artz section of the forums.
I'd really like to see your version of Positron.
  2. Some nice work Dr.Spoon.
It's kind of hard to make a persona from vertical images though isn't it (you get little more than the top of their heads in some)?
Any horizontal images that you're thinking of using?

I do really like the semi clear/white tabs on the third one you made.

    Great stuff Henri.
The Fir Bolg poking his head out of the background is a nice added touch.
  4. ChristopherRobin

    Back again!

Welcome back Dr.. It's cool to see more and more people coming back.
  5. I vote Foo... it's right in his sig.

(I am very proud of how far DD has come
though, I tell her all the time. )
  6. Nice try. You are not privy to any of the PM's and notes going back
and forth and I don't see that I owe you any explanation.

    Also
"didn't have the nerve to try" sounds hollow coming from you.
  7. Awesome!
Glad to see you back and at it again PT and gratz to Ransim and Memphis Bill.
  8. Lol. Note to self: stop grinning when slipping around invisibly... just in case.
  9. Np. Noticing details is kinda my thing.

    I need inf!

    I gotcho influ right heeya.
    Holla!
  11. Most people can skip all of this. Nothing below but a bunch of hoopla and factual rebuttals.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't equate expressing my distate with your actions as taking part in this community.
I don't have to equate it. You're here talking on a community forum.

I don't post art here, do livestreams, give notifications about software, etc.
So all of the angst and misinformation but with none of the cool art.

A glib ingrate like you certainly makes it seem like the right decision.
Hahahaha Glib? Have you seen my wall of text posts? You think no forethought goes into those... and ingrate?

    Seriously?

If you can find anyone who has said "thank you" or "I appreciate..." more times than I on the art forums I would love to meet them.
My first post to you (almost two years ago) was a thank you for your paint-over and advice about the
LJ gift art I was doing. My last DA note to you (just a few days back) was a thank you as well.
Are you fishing for compliments or just saying the opposite of what is true to get a rise?

P.S. Already resorting to name calling hunh? Nice Jason, real nice.

Poor Chris, the victim of arbitrary enforcement of rules in a fanart competition. Just like..well anyone else that took part in said competition.
Not to the degree I was.

Your frustration over the rules in both cases was understandable. You lost a guaranteed win based on stupid rules.
Half true... and the first sensible thing you've said so far.

All that meant though is that you had to make art to go up against someone else, which is what the contest was supposed to be about from the get go.
Correction I did not have to. And you are completely ignoring everything I said above. That is not what a fair contest is supposed to be about.

The mysterious leave of absence last year, where everyone pretty much assumed
You speaking for everyone now? Neat trick did you take a poll and ask or is it just because you say so? Besides you know what happens when you assume.

you were sulking and the last minute request to change the theme because you assumed it was biased in Shia's favor--what can I say? Nobody bought it.
Corrections (sigh) Nobody? You mean to say "you" didn't buy it. Thankfully you don't have to buy it for it to be true.
Furthermore I was not sulking and I assumed nothing.

Can you honestly tell me if one of my best friends had chosen the theme instead you would have sat completely silent with no objection?
Go ahead... say yes. I want to see how far the needle on my B.S. meter goes.

As for my role in the whole thing--I didn't vote.
    True.

I just argued that to win you should actually have to beat the other frontrunner.
Half true and glaringly omits a bunch of fun stuff.

    after her piece is finished.
Um wrong again. It was before. You really should pay
closer attention or some might think you were making glib remarks.

Took a lot of guts to see it through like that.
A lot more than it took to give up.

As for my track record, I'll take the Pepsi challenge against your art any day of the week.

What track record are you talking about... number of months won over the last two years?

The Pepsi challenge was a blind taste test/marketing stunt to try and prove to people that Coke and Pepsi are not the same thing.
It's another glib remark considering the odds are good it would have been you vs. me this year... had you stuck around long enough.
But hey don't that inconvenient truth get in your way.
Poor BW, there's always next year.

I dropped last year mainly because I was busy and couldn't justify participating. This year I was pretty much burned out and had something of an inkling that things would end like this based on past experience with you.
You were busy. I could borrow a turn of phase and say "nobody is buyin it" here but I don't speak for everyone and certainly can't read your mind.
Besides that would just be crass and who does stuff like that?

In neither case did I screw anyone else over.
Maybe you should repeat that 3x to make it sound more convincing.

    We done here?
I'll be over in the JAM thread.

    I think I see what you're saying.
So what about having a private notice describing the theme that goes out to all artists who express interest
and then they submit art directly to the host and then once a month a voting thread
appears with the choices and people pick their favorites.
    Something like that?

    2) Set a standard that no contest will be judged any earlier than (for example) 14 days after the 5th sumbission is received. Obviously, you may want to modify both numbers for various reasons, but make them a permanent standard thereafter. This will give you a decent, attainable pool to judge from, and you just need to make sure that, once the minumum number of entries is reached, the closing date is announced and remains unchanged thereafter.

Just some brainstorming I thought I'd throw out there.
    Some good ideas Bloodspeaker.

1). I've made it a habit to post at the last minute possible for a number of reasons, that being one.
I don't know how you could prevent other contestants from seeing the other pieces while they are being voted on
since it's a public vote. Also it wouldn't stop people from dropping out before the next month starts.
Beyond that I know some liked the earlybird posting and some like to see the thread
active throughout the month with art both of which wouldn't be possible.
Interesting thought though, maybe some sort of hybrid would work.

2). In years past we got as many as 17 artists and all were able to post something up by Jan 31st.
To get your foot in the door your entry doesn't have to be a masterpiece... it just needs to be in the top 16.
Once the closing date is announced it needs to remain unchanged... Absolutely agree.

Don't like debate? You can skip the rest of this post.

QUOTE=BattleWraith: Wow. I am so glad I dropped out early.............
Didn't you also make a post about exiting the community and be sure to follow you on Deviant Art?
That didn't take long but hey I for one am glad to see you back. WB BW!
    (Anagram and Palindrome two-fer w00t! )

    Shame on you Chris.
    Lol, oops spoke too soon.

I remember what happened last year--it was basically the same deal as now.
Similar yes, as I said above.

As the result of a poorly designed ruleset,
Not as a direct result but close enough.

See this is exactly what I was talking about in my above post, my effort to go along with what others wanted, forgotten and no credit given. The end result, remembered incorrectly.
Fixed the above for you since you had a few key facts wrong and holy Zod did you leave out a bunch of stuff (including your role in it).

It ran against the spirit of the whole competition.
And dropping out two years in a row because you are not winning IS
somehow in the spirit of the whole competition?

Why on earth would anyone want to win something like that?
Right because going along with what came after worked out so much better.
You speak like I had a fair alternative available to me and chose not to take it (neither of which are true).

You know it's really easy to sit back after you've dropped out and be derisive of how I handled
the situation but I wonder what you would've done if you were put in my position i.e.

You leave for a while and come back to find a bonus round has been declared without your approval
You have about 2 days to come up with your entry even though your opponent has had a full month
In a clear conflict of interest the theme has already been chosen by your opponents best friend.
No surprise your opponent is happy with the choice but it stinks for you.
Your request to have a new theme chosen is denied, suck it up or forfeit
There are actually people publicly stating (as well as some not public) that they will vote for your opponent no matter what you do... before any art has been posted.
Your personal character has been called into question (Hah I'm putting it nicely)
Your offer to "Start it over and do it right" with a new unbiased theme voted on by the forum, a new time limit that gives equal time to both competitors etc etc" but both your opponent and the new host will not speak to you or answer your PM's.
Etc Etc Etc Etc.... this isn't even all of it.

Oh yeah and you have guaranteed immunity so you really don't have to go along with this nonsense if you don't want to.

I wonder put in that same situation... would you have had the guts
to see it through to whatever end as I did? Your track record suggests otherwise.

    Sad sad sad.
Lol. I'll take your word for it dude.
  14. @DD: *Hugz*
    Thanks for understanding.

    I agree no hard feelings.
That would be wise going forward.
You had a great run too (lol stickmonkey ).

@Bubba: I agree, from an artistic standpoint, this years contest was a great success,
speaking personally most of my best pieces for the year came about as a result of this contest.

    Thanks for hosting it.
  15. TLDR for you? Just read up until the -------------- line. Those wanting to know my reasoning read on to the end.

You know last year I went along with what other people wanted (going through a "Bayani bonus round" for cash after I had already won the main contest under Wassy) instead of standing up for what I thought was right and in the end I caught an unbelievable amount of flak, both public and private, for playing along. I was called a quitter, coward, cheater and more and I was so disappointed with how it was handled and the resulting reactions that I briefly considered leaving the forums altogether. Now I find the sacrifice I made in giving people what they asked for has been by and large forgotten and several I've spoken to a year later only remember (incorrectly) the end result.

This year (sadly) I find myself in a very similar position at the end with a controversial decision to make but this time I am choosing to not just allow what others want and do what I feel is the right thing. Up until now I was waiting and hoping the others involved would step up and make the right decision themselves or that through votes, drops or some other mechanism it would work itself out so I wouldn't be saddled with this unfair choice again. Doesn't look like it.

What I am saying here is with DD's exit (due to votes) from the contest last month I am the last remaining valid contestant and so the art contest is ended.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

What do I mean by valid?
I started at the beginning and had my first entry submitted before the 31st of January and submitted 8 consecutive pieces, one per month, each before the respective deadline. Liz did not.

What do I mean by unfair?
Well let's say I skipped the first 7 months and put up just 1 piece at the end of August but it got the most votes and I won the whole contest... would that be fair to all the other artists who were in and competing from the start? Of course not.

Well, what if instead I had jumped in back in June (hey that's when eliminations began right?) and submitted only 3 pieces at the end to win the whole contest versus 8 from my competition... would that be cool as long as I had Bubba's approval? I think most fair-minded people would still say no, having to submit only 3 entries vs. the other having to come up with 8 is not fair.

So at what point (if ever) is it fair to join a contest late?

Putting aside what I think for the moment (that January 31st has always been the deadline for entry) if the host is going to bend his/her own rules to get more contestants in then I say you have to at some point draw a hard line and say anything before this is in and anything after this is out and then you have to stick to it no matter what you may want to have happen or who may ask you to join.
Bubba did exactly that and drew the line in March when he declared in his list of rules...

Liz failed to post until mid way through April, sorry but that misses the original cutoff by almost 3 months, the new cutoff by 2 and the new new final cutoff by 2 weeks. I think (me speculating here) Bubba was just happy to have more artists join and Liz was happy to be in and neither gave much thought to if what they were doing was fair to the rest involved.

LJ if people remember joined even later than Liz (in May) but I think (after speaking with him) that he realized the possible ramifications of coming in so late and politely bowed out in June with
"apologies to the other contestants for intruding." I have much respect to Bobby for doing the fair thing. Were I to submit any art now I would be giving my tacit approval to this unfair extra month (yet again).

    I don't.

Apologies to those who wanted to see more art, for them I did revive the Art Jam to carry us (hopefully) through the end of the year.

P.S. To be absolutely clear I am not bowing out or throwing in the towel (or whatever some may try to spin it as),
I am saying DD and I were the only two legit contestants last month and with her out I am
the last artist remaining and this time I'm taking a stand on principle.
It may not be popular but it's the right thing to do.

  18. No Fu Manchu? Perhaps it's just not possible/feasible in 3-D art.
    Nice inking on the poster.

    October Art Jam

    It lives!

The theme for the month is HALLOWEEN and it ends October 31st.

Just a reminder this is not a contest and you are not required to "stay in" and submit every month. Jump in or out as you see fit.
This is just a way to encourage more art made here on the forums in a friendly non-competitive way we can all enjoy.
Anyone can participate any given month if they have an idea for the theme, talent is not required and collaborations are welcome.
One person picks a theme each month for the Jam then passes the torch to someone new and they pick a theme for the next month and so on.

    The main things to keep in mind when submitting to the Jam are;

    1. Entries need to be CoX related and in some way incorporate the theme of the month.
    2. Entries should be posted in this thread and try and get your art in before months end.
    3. All entries must follow community rules for what can be posted (two-click it if you are unsure) here.

All types of art are welcome (screenshot manips, traditional mediums, digital... heck
make a toothpick sculpture if you got the skillz ) so get cracking and lets see some new art!

  22. I for one would love have more info about my heroes while in the character select screen.
Having severe Alt-itis makes it tricky to remember sometimes where I left off with a particular
hero or which has the most influence available if I need to transfer some.

Really like the level up wheel around the hero/villain icon too. It's already familiar
to everyone and tells you at a glance who is close to dinging.

P.S. I read your text just fine DD but it was nice of you to change it for others having trouble seeing it.
