  1. I returned to the game after a two-year hiatus and just noticed that Brutes got claws while I was gone.

I've never had the desire to play Claws, but I think on a Brute it could be a lot of fun. I imagine you could do some cool things combined with Fury.

But in your opinion, what secondary meshes particularly well with Claws?

    Thanks.
  2. I don't think you'll get much support about Sephiroth. He's one of the most popular villains.

Wosre meaning poor concepts or simply ineffective?

Ineffective, you could go with Bowser, Wily or Robotnik. Robotnik may fit the other definition as well.

  4. Thanks for the input guys.

I had another recommendation, this one, which I have kind of already dismissed, but I thought I should let you guys weigh in on it regardless.

Bring on Black Cat, I'm not old enough to remember peter's other girlfriends but Macfarlane's run on Amazing Spiderman had Balck Cat showing up alot and I was hoping she would break up Peter and MJ.

My dad had a ton of Spiderman comics from 69,70 and 71 and you know why they were better the ones I collected in 87, 91 and 98. Because Peter and MJ weren't married.

    Quesada got it right.
    Nooooooooooooooooo!

You're that imaginary fan Joey Q is always appealing to! I hate you!
  6. heh, there must be a large subsection of Scott Pilgrim fans who also pay for their music.

I bought the extended sountrack off of iTunes 8/10 when it released. I haven't decided if I'm getting the game soundtrack or not... Probably not. I already have the tracks branded into my brain from having played it so much... Especially the tracks that play over the final, Gideon-centric levels. Eff those.

The score is really good. I prefer it to the soundtrack.
  7. I can't recall each movie that I have seen this year (Was Shutter Island this year? If so, that as well), but Inception is definitely the better movie.
  8. Alright, what all exactly does this thread encompass?

I was under the impression that O.M.I.T. was a one-shot, but now i see that it is a four issue arc. Is the arc completed now?

Anyway, I just read the first issue. I'll offer brief comments on that, because I'm sure some of them have already been stated (again, I didn't want to read the entire thread until I read the story for myself).

I hate, hate the premise for this story.

But judging just from this first issue, I kind of like what Quesada is building. At least, what I think he's building. Here, let me break it down.

He's building something about how Peter has doubts because of Gwen Stacy. If he calls it off because of his dead girlfriend, then eff Joey Q.

However, it also looks like he is building a story regarding a police officer's private life being put in danger because of what he does for a living. I can appreciate that thread a little more.

I don't know which way it's going to go, but right now I don't hate the story. I hate the premise - This should be an unnecesary story, but I don't hate what looks to be their approach for calling off the wedding.

But it they go through with that, it's a dangerous precedent. The writers could then use that reason to develop why Peter doesn't have any private life associations whatsoever, cutting himself from all ties. He couldn't work, because that puts the Bugle staff into danger. He couldn't see his Aunt, because hey, maybe someone figured out his I.D. and is tailing him without his knowledge (disregarding a possible Spidey Sense twinge).

Anyway, I'll comment more as I go along.
  9. You guys are good at this, ha.

I was trying my hardest to stay under the thousand-threshold, and really, at this point, City of Heroes would be the most taxing thing I put the system through. So as long as the PC can handle Ultra Mode and is future-proof for another year, I'll be interested.

The closest Microcenter is at least 30 miles away. It looks like they will do home delivery though, so that shouldn't stop me.

Trinculo, what is your hesitation on it specifically? Just that I wouldn't be able to add upgraded RAM or anything at a later date?

(As a matter of fact, isn't that a standard concern with Dells?)
  10. Good point. Messiah Complex would have been simply impossible five years ago.

Peter David is a good one too, though he tries to stay out of the way of the X-events.

A great deal of the nuance and characterization was lost in this re-interpretation.
I definitely agree. Unfortunately, you've got people like Lastjustice complaining that the movie was too long, so they really couldn't spend the time to further develop those concepts.

I also think Cera's casting for the part was a poor choice. He came across far too insecure while comic book Scott's defining trait was willful ignorance. Coupled with the Cera backlash, he probably did little to aid the movie.

For anyone even slightly interested in the story, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the comics over the movie even if it is a harder medium for some folks to swallow; it's just that much better. The movie did have a few good qualities to it, but they won't be enough to save it.
I disagree about the Cera casting though. He really nailed the insecure, spoiled aspects of Scott Pilgrim, but totally missed the ADD, hyperactive Scott (I feel like I've said this a few times... Go to the other thread for more expansion).

Besides, who would you suggest otherwise? I've come to terms with Cera being the most obvious choice for SP. He even has the Canadian-thing down!

Edgar Wright’s films have always done better in England than America. In the case of his previous one, Hot Fuzz, the UK box office was almost twice as much as the US.

The movie will then see rolling openings across Europe for the next two months (no word on Asia). Maybe it will wind up big in Japan…
This is what I'm banking on. This weekend to see how it does in Europe. If someone has it, I would appreciate a good global box office tracking website.

He didn't come across as egotistical at all.(like him putting on his stupid hat every time a girl mentioned his hair cut.) Selfish and dense, but not remotely confident. He was insecure as they come.
Kieran Culkin can carry a movie - He did really well with Igby Goes Down and The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, but no one has seen those movies so it would be difficult to convince a major movie studio to let him head the 60 million movie. Also, he was great as Wallace Wells, so I would have hated to lose that.

At no point would you ever see why Ramona would want to be with Scott besides beating up her ex's.(I hate myself for using this analogy, but Scott Pilgrim is like Bella from twilight.*rips off the corner of his mancard.*) You find it hard to believe he's gotten with all women the movie claims as it goes so far to show what a massive loser he is. He has nothing of substance to him and he's incredibly awkward and clueless with girls as all Cera's characters seem to be.

Granted Ramona comes across as a fast woman(as she almost sleeps with him on the first date.) and bit of a Bwitch based off her history with men. (G-man was probably the guy she really deserved as she made the evil exs.) You can understand easily why he'd want to date her initially but once Scott sees her baggage it's a wonder why he'd continue or be in love with a girl he barely knows besides the whole love at first sight/destiny crap. Their relationship ultimately just feels forced compared to Knives who I've seen play out simliarly in real life tons of times, as their interactions felt much more natural.
This is a huge complaint that I understand. There really wasn't enough development between the characters. I think that I, and others who are fans, just filled in the necessary details with what we already knew from the books. Just a limitation of the medium, unfortunately. It would have taken a lot more time to establish that relationship, and earlier you were already complaining about the long run-time and the slow beginning (when these things are generally established).

PRO-TIP: In an early script, Scott and Knives end up together. The movie still feels like that is the way it is leading (Scott checks to see how Knives is doing after the fight with Gideon before he checks on Ramon), and takes a sudden swerve.

I would have been fine if Scott had ended up with either Knives or Kim Pine (though there would have needed to have been much more development and flashbacks into Kim's character to validate that ending).

Now having delved into spoilers myself, i know that post twist, the movie is entirely up my psychological alley, though i was sold on it even when i thought it was a silly video game fight fantasy, but perhaps absent of knowledge of the deeper and more interesting characterizations that cast a lot of characters in a light that is a but more unflattering than one may assume for the protagonist and his love interest, people are not being fully informed of the depth and really think it may just be a nerd kung fu movie. I certainly am not claiming any special knowledge on the topic, but it does certainly seem to be a plausible possibility, that its marketing has failed to capture the actual reason that fans are so adamant about it.

I'm probably seeing it this friday, i suspect i will like it, so o'malley can at least count on my ticket.
    When Marcian said this:

I thought that, too, until I realized that the entire point of the movie is that Scott Pilgrim is learning what is wrong with him and what needs to change for him to be a worthy person. In Twilight, much like The Little Mermaid, Bella/Ariel is wrong and flawed, but the universe seems to make everything all right for her, as if she's at a dinner part with Time, Meaning, Rhyme, and Reason and Meaning seems to polite to point out that she's using the Salad Fork... for soup.
She (he? sorry) is absolutely right. The book is the same way. It's why he finally apologizes for himself to Kim Pine. It's part of his growing up process.

I think the movie kind of rushes that (it's all within the "1-Up" scene without much build-up. Still, it's a great message and I prefer it to the opposing option that Marcian mentioned.
  12. Quesada, creatively, is really awful, and the epitome of everything bad about comics.

But from a business-sense, Marvel is doing a lot right.

Since the latter actually matters to the people in charge, he's goign to be around for a while. We'll just have to hope he gets bored with playing in the sandbox with the characters at some point, and actually let the experienced writers do their job.
  13. Oh God, I want to read this thread but I'm about 2 issues behind in Amazing Spider-Man. In very general terms, can someone say if this was as awful as One More Day? As a long-time Spidey reader who really loved the dynamic between MJ and Peter, how pissed off am I going to be at this issue?

The battles really need started at the 20 min mark since it was supposed be the hook of the movie based off the trailers....not the end of the first hour.
I saw it a second time on Saturday, and I felt that the first half did focus a little too much on establishing everything. I was never bored, because as a fan of the books I liked to see that stuff (though after my initial viewing mentioned earlier in this thread, I did comment that some of the scenes felt long). I was seeing it with a friend unfamiliar with the subject matter and I was thinking at that point, "oh, I doubt he's enjoying this." However, it turns out that he loved the movie and wants to see it again. He didn't want to read the book after seeing it though, which seems odd to me, just because if there is a book or movie or any other sort of adaptation of material I enjoyed, I'm interested in it. But this friend also played through the game with me, so perhaps between the game and the movie he feels he got enough of the story.

I think he got the skeleton of the story between the two, but there are some subplots missing, such as Scott's job, Stills' "preferences," Knives' father, etc.

There might have been some people this movie scored major points with. It wasn't me or my girlfriend. It's really a niche film. I got all the old school gaming references, she didn't. We both ultimately felt it was a rental. I didn't hate it (despite seriously considering walking out during the first half. Cera crosses the Spider man 3 bar dancing scene awkwardness levels at a couple points. I was not amused as I felt embaressed for him.) I'd skip it in the theathers or catch it at a cheap show. C-.
Do you recall what parts specifically bothered you (regarding the embarrassment thing)? I never caught that.

And for love of pete if you re going have a fake band in a movie...don't have them suck as a constant gag or show them constantly play.
I didn't think they were all that bad. Particularly later in the movie, the performances are actually Beck and Cornelius rather than the actors playing (as it is in earlier parts). The fight with the twins I know off the top of my head was Beck.

As part of the anti-fanboy/girl coalition myself I will send you a cease and desist order. Once I get done sending Captain Foamy one for all his batman and nolan anyways. It might be awhile. Yes I know Cera is the epitome of everything that's wrong in the world....

and yes, I know I suck for not hating him....

and yes, Im sure it's wonderful to be you....

but honestly I felt he and the rest of the cast did a perfect job and I can't see anyone else fitting that role now. The begining was wonderful and filled with humor and many other 'gamer' type jokes that *I* found funny and then it all gets amped up to 11 with the over the top fighting in the second half. Now I haven't read the comic so perhaps I'm just an ignorant commoner and am missing some large glaring flaw but ya know what? I don't care, this was by far my pick for greatest movie of the year.
I don't know about my favorite film of the year, but I will definitely be getting the blu-ray, for what I'm sure will be an epic dose of special features.

Michael Cera was a great Scott for his self-deprecating moments, but I don't think he was the best ADD-addled Scott. However, I don't think there is a young actor out there who would have been better, and you couldn't cast an unknown to be the headliner of the movie due to the property being licensed.

Hadn't we moved on? It had been quite a few days since this topic was last bumped.

To clarify, my opinion was that if you dislike one actor due to some past similar roles he may have been in, you should still allow yourself to be open-minded enough to see that actor tackle a much different role. I mean, I don't remember George-Michael Bluth (Arrested Development) or Paulie Bleaker (Juno) ever pulling off a 65-hit combo.

And if you're not open-minded, then hey, here are some things you may also like.

I wasn't saying "SEE IT AT ALL COSTS!!!" but merely that if you're interested in seeing it, (an inference made because you're in the thread to begin with - Perhaps an incorrect assumption due to some of the trollish behavior evidenced) here are examples of things you may enjoy. I reinforced this by flat-out saying I didn't care if you saw it, I was just suggesting examples that those on the fence may find interesting.

I think they're supposed to be much worse in the comics than they are in the movie. The record-label deal is never mentioned in the comics because I think they're just plain terrible in the books, whereas in the movie they're presented as at least serviceable.

First we can upgrade the memory, didn't touch that yet so here, still DDR3-1333 but Cas 7 instead of Cas 9 and with heat spreaders for $99 Vs $96. Can give you a few % improvement in memory intensive apps like games. $3 down $81 to go.

Next, kick the video card up another notch by going to the 1GB version of the GTX 460 which besides giving you more memory also gives you more memory bandwidth by going from 192-bit to 256-bit video memory bus (8-9% faster). That's $30 difference, leaving $51.

Lastly lets add back a 3rd party cooler. This is ranked higher than the Cooler Master V8 and is less expensive. Cost $40, leaving $11.

Note I didn't update the wishlist with these changes.

So in the end I'm still $11 under their package deal even with a 3rd party heatsink, faster memory (at least faster timings) and an even faster video card. Still the OS will cost $100 in either case.
Would you consider the changes you made necesary? The standard will be smooth playing of CoH on Ultra Mode, as well as whatever capabilities DCU may require.
  16. Looking at the powersets again, I decided to play /EM once more. This time I paired it with the Radiation Blast due to suggestions from this thread, but I was thinking...

What the hell do you use for a PvE attack chain?

I've never been one for X-Ray beam - The eye-attack just has too long of an animation and doesn't flow, so I'll probably end up with the weaker, but faster recharging and animating Neutrino Bolt.

Eventually I would like to PvP with the set (particularly zone, though I don't know how often that occcurs on the Infinity server these days), but we're more concerned with PvE here.

So, suggestions and approached for PvE'ing with the set? I assume some sort of high-wire blapping is the only way to make the most out of the combo, with a little bit of Neutrino Beam, hop in, Irradiate, Cosmic Burst, Bonesmasher, Total Focus, hop out, Neutrino Beam being relatively standard. I'd probably skip Electron Haze because it would conflict with that approach with the smallish cone and knockback.

Any antecdotal experience to sway me from this course? Or support it?

    Thanks.
  17. Limitations? Solo viability? Etc.

I haven't seen much mention of it.

I went with this rather than the more thematic Pistols/Traps.

Have I made a huge mistake?

After a night of playing... eh. I'm only level 6. Not wowing me just yet, but I've played /Cold before and know that it doesn't do anything too impressive until the late 20's or so.
  18. I was in the latter, so obviously PCSAD is worse.

Uh, I mean better. Much better.

    Er. Can I have a do-over?
  19. Ha, I love the wish list title.

    Quote:
Do you really need a full size tower case and do you like red? The black, windowless version of that case lists for $20 less. It's "baby" brother, also windowless and black, with 2 fewer DVD drive openings but the same number of internal HD bays is $60 less.
Did you go with the $20 or $60 cheaper one?
  20. I had a level 33 Elec/Shield...

Then I took a two year break...

I came back just over a week ago. I read that Shield Charge was changing, and thought I would grind up a bit to get it to experience it a bit before it was toned down, but life got in the way and I didn't even make it to 34.

So it's fun reading all of these stories of ridiculousness. Being that the Blaster nukes are my most favorite powers in the game, I think I would have loved it. Tell me more!
  21. Oh, good point with Powers.

Christian Walker is a former superhero who lost his powers and became a detective.

Due to all 'a his responsibility, he garnered the attention of an alien race who passed on a legacy super-power to him called the Millenium Guard.

So he's powered again, in a different capacity.
  22. I have a Windows 7 disc laying around somewhere, so no problem there. I should find it first...

Also, that's good. I will want to play other stuff (many games of which can't be mentioned here anymore), but nothing too graphically-intensive. So, if the 6-core processor is way overboard, what would you suggest? Unfortunately on Newegg, that seems to be the cheapest DIY kit that also includes a graphics card, so if I dropped down lower I would then need a graphics card recommendation.

I'm not sold to the computer I linked by any means. Its red case is ugly.
  23. Oh, I'm sure it's happened plenty, I just don't think it was in the Stark-Armor era.
  24. I have a bad computer situation that I need to remedy, and I was looking for any recommendations.

I want a desktop, rather than a laptop. PC rather than a Mac. I want it to run CoH Ultra Mode without any problems.

What suggestions can you toss my way? I was looking at this DIY kit on Newegg.

If you have a Newegg link for your suggestion: Bonus points!

I've never done a DIY Kit like the above before, but it looks to be the cheapest alternative, and I think I can handle it. I can at least figure it out with internet-help and if that fails, I have friends who can assist.

But if there are better alternatives that are pre-built, that would be cool too. I'm looking to stay under the grand threshold though, so that may be difficult.

    Thanks!
  25. I made a Kinetic/Elec Scrapper, decided I didn't like that (but like the name so I didn't delete) and instead made a Kin/Shield Scrapper named Centennial Sentinel, who is now level 11. I've just been soloing, trying to get the story of Praetoria. I don't know what I'm doing, so I've bounced between Resistance and Loyalist a couple of times unintentionally at this point. Some contacts suddenly won't talk to me after I make different decisions from arc to arc. It's both cool and annoying.

I also made an Electric/Stone Dominator, but I haven't played him at all.

And that's it so far. I haven't had too much time to play, and I got stuck in a bugged mission for like five hours the other day (I AFK'd in it eventually, missed the GM response, then had to update my petition).

It's fun so far. I'll be hanging around for at least an extra month for it.
