Reading this... I just don't know what to say. Part of me thinks I should give you a hug, because it sounds like you need one. Another part of me wants to vomit. The rest of me wants to stay very, very far away from you.

You do realize that you're very likely a sociopath, right? I'm saying that you lack empathy for the suffering of others, and I'm not trying to use that as an insult.

On the bright side, you probably are, as you say, very good at your job--sociopaths tend to focus on results and not care about the details (or effort) involved in reaching them... nor do they care that pretty much everyone they work alongside despises them.

I would still save someone I knew to be a total *******, even as he or she spit and cussed and cursed my name.

Maybe the experience would change them for the better. If not, at least with their life saved, I'd still have the opportunity to beat their *** in the future. >_>

If they don't sell the game, then they can state its value at whatever they want. They're looking at paying a ton of taxes this year for all the sales of Guild Wars 2, so they can state that CoH is worth MORE due to its history of development and get out of having to pay the US government operating taxes. (So yeah, NCSoft is probably cheating our economy out of money.)

Most likely, they want to keep the IP specifically so no one else will make a profit off of it. Selling the game to another publisher means that someone else will be getting money from its customers, when that money COULD be going to a different NCSoft product.

The sad fact is that while CoH is still profitable (and would likely be so for a few more years at least), it is not growing. Eventually, all those profits would dry up and the game would reach a point where it wasn't even covering its own development expenses. A Western company would likely just freeze development as that inevitability approached and milk what's already been done for all it's worth, but Eastern businesses don't operate on the same logic we're used to.

And again, since they can state the value at whatever they like to get out of paying US taxes this year, that's probably worth more to them than a reasonable offer for the IP.

I never said you didn't. In fact, you've mentioned several times that you DO want it to stick around.

You're obviously reading something into my post that quite simply is not there.

You're also doing the exact opposite of what you SHOULD be doing--even by your own admission. Log in, play the game, and enjoy the time you have left. Ranting, swearing and insulting people on the message boards isn't doing you any favors (AND it's more unhealthy than hoping for a miracle to spring up and save us all).

I'm unemployed and am on the verge of exhausting my savings. If I don't get a good paying job by the end of November, I'll be one of those homeless starving people.

I still want CoH to stick around and will do what I can to make that happen. Since I don't have the finances to do so, I do what I can in other ways. Namely, relay information as soon as I hear it to other people who DON'T have the time to spend on the message boards, call out bullshitters, and otherwise just hang with the cool people I've met over the last 8½ years.

Right. Too bad moderators can actually see the changes you've made to your posts. The notation that they were edited an hour after the fact is a clue to everyone else.

You should see his post in the other thread where he said people should kill themselves if they can't get over the fact that the game is shutting down. He's an all-around classy dude.

No, I don't think it took him 5 weeks to do it, but it's all the more reason he wasn't doing his job as the company's PR guy. **** should have been done the day of the cancellation announcement.

You have bad news, you respond to it pro-actively... not by sitting on your thumbs for over a month and waiting for the shitstorm to blow over. That is literally half your job when you work in PR.

Community reps generally don't get access to the inner workings of the product, yo.

And honestly, at this point I'm guessing he's no longer technically a Paragon Studios employee. If anything, I imagine he's considered a temporary NCSoft employee... or worse, he may just be doing this out of the goodness of his heart and a lack of other things to do while he looks for another job.

Don't forget that those costs were offset or even negated completely by the monthly microtransaction stipends that subscribers were gifted.

Kind of like how there used to be an arcade in every mall in the 80s and 90s, and now you're lucky if there's a few games at the local (and now decrepit) bowling alley and/or minigolf course.

I doubt microtransaction gaming will last anywhere near as long as arcade gaming did, because: a) they're asking for a lot more than a quarter for most things, and b) they come with a sort of unspoken promise that you've just purchased something "permanent"... that will disappear only months later when the game is unceremoniously shut down.

And at least if you REALLY love an old arcade game, you can usually buy a cabinet for a few hundred bucks... or of course emulate it. Cancelled MMOs are protected by their former owners the way a moonshiner protects his distillery--no sane amount of money is going to get you a home version, and any attempt to steal his recipe is going to be made while dodging buckshot.

I think the argument is that Zwill worked his *** off for the game and showed a ton of passion for everything he did, and the NCSoft PR person takes 5 weeks to write a single paragraph saying "Sorry we ****** your game (but not really)."

But then again, it's a pretty ******* unjust world we live in.

If that were the case, they'd have waited until much closer to B&S's release before cancelling the game.

On the other hand, they announced the cancellation the week after Guild Wars 2 was released...

Not exactly news, but **** that game anyway.
